‘Scuse me while I get just a wee bit judgmental. Now, I know that’s unusual here and certainly not what y’all come to this site for but hear me out! This girl’s facebook page, and her questionably professional websites she links to, have been sent to me twice. Would you like to know why? Well let’s take a look, shall we?

1 – She sells stallions who don’t deserve to make the sweet horsey love (that was weird, wasn’t it?). Joker‘s only claim to fame is his “great bloodlines” –which you Paint people will have to tell me whether or not they are, in fact, great. Either way, I’m one of those crazy people who thinks bloodlines only carry you so far, great or otherwise, and after that you have to earn the right to keep your balls. Looking at the sale ad, there’s no mention of performance history nor any intention to compete. Plus, if you watch this guy’s video he’s got a short, thick neck, what looks to be a paddling stride (although some of that could be attributed to the hard, uneven ground they’re working him on), poor shoulder angle (and you can see the resulting limited range of motion in the video, particularly during slow-mo). There is, however, one mildly redeeming quality: he’s not advertised for stud, only for sale. Fingers crossed whoever buys him gelds him, and gelds him quick!

2 – You have pictures like this as your facebook profile.

There’s one school of thought that says a person’s facebook page is personal and they are entitled to a personal life and can be silly and still be a responsible, upstanding citizen Monday to Friday, 9-5. But when your profession is training horses, and you put a picture like this on your facebook page, I feel justified in judging you! Especially because for you to publish a photo like this in a public forum, indicates some sort of pride in it, which, to me, indicates a complete lack of judgment and understanding of what a trainer’s role is and should be.

3. If you’re a western trainer, shouldn’t you know what a proper rollback is? That isn’t a rollback – this is (actually, it’s not the best example, strictly speaking, but I like the comments they uploaded with the video as they explain the scoring the rider would receive and why.)

4. If you keep horses, and offer to board others, you may want to consider removing the downed fencing – because I sure as shit am not going to pay you to potentially injure my horse (he’s accident-prone enough to do that for himself, thank you very much!)

(It’s kind of hard to see, but the downed fence I’m referring to is on the left side, in front of the big tree)

I don’t always feel good for judging and commenting on people (don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it and do have some fun with it), but then I think about all the people who don’t really know about horses who might stumble upon this girl, or someone just like her, and think they’re some sort of magical godsend when they really, really are not.

I think most of us are in agreement on this one.

It seems the cheesiest ads, for the crappiest horses, especially studs being sold as appropriate kids horses, show children on their backs, often without shoes, always without helmets and obviously with minimal training. For some reason this is supposed to lull the potential buyer into thinking this gaurantees the horse is safe for anyone to ride. I have also noticed the horses in these ads are almost always called “studs,” not stallions, or what they should really be called, “desperately need to be gelded but I’m too cheap to pay for it.”

Stud advertised as not started under saddle, but great with the kids.

All it means is the child is lucky to be alive, at that moment, and might not be the next.

When I was a kid, puttering around at the gymkhanas, you had to be 18-years-old to show a stallion. Period. It didn’t matter if Ol’ Rex had raised three generations of kids on his back (probably three and four at a time), or if the young rider was the next Olympic Champion, if you were under 18 you didn’t ride a stud into the arena.

The logic was simple. Kids spend way too much time screwing around and not paying attention to their horse or the horses around them. Stallions think about sex. It’s what they do.If they’re not thinking about sex, they’re thinking about taking offense at any other horse that bumps them, looks at them,or God help us all, squeals in their direction.

I don’t see how that was a bad idea.

There are great stallions out there. Some are dead quiet, always mannerly, never look at a mare out in public, the list can go on and on. I think it should be one of the prime reasons to let a stallion keep all his parts. But I would never expect a child to be responsible for a stallions behavior. I would never turn a kid loose on one, ever, ever, ever.

“Pally was BORN to ride. He loves to have people on His Back. He is gentle to mares and Has produced Gaited Colts that have either sold fast or found permanent homes with their breeder! Flashy in Show With confirmation Plus! He is NOT Homozygous but throws beautiful colors most often. My grandkids Ride Him around other horses and mares without any trouble. He is a splendid color and has a little saddle blanket on His back! Pally needs to be placed with a family that can share his love for a lifetime!”

I let my daughter ride different studs through the years while growing up. She was always supervised, I always knew the horse and how he was raised and she was well versed in how to handle one. It still made me as nervous as a mama cow watching her calf get dragged to a branding fire. She never showed one or had the responsibility of a stallion’s primary care.

I’m not afraid of stallions, but I never forget I’m around one. The biggest problem I’ve had with them, is not trying to breed at innappropriate times, it’s been striking, kicking or biting at people or horses. These are horses I’ve had in for training, not one’s I handled from the get go. A properly trained stallion, which starts out with a good temperament, can be as easy to get along with as any gelding and much easier than a lot of mares I’ve known.

The thing is, there is more to them, and their reactions can be dangerous. If they’ve been mishandled by their owners, through cruelty, spoiling them or just stupidity, then their reactiveness is going to be through the roof.

They can be kind and well mannered, but there is still more out in the world they can react to, and when a stallion reacts he doesn’t tend to go halfway. I don’t want a barefoot, goofy little kid to get stomped because Ol’ Rex took off through the fence after the neighbors smart alecky gelding.

Horses and their riders tend to operate in three different ways. The rider leads and the horse follows, the horse leads and the rider follows, or they work in tandem, still with the rider as the primary influence.

Kids and beginning riders don’t lead, they follow. A good horse for beginners and kids accepts this, takes care of the rider, or at least doesn’t take full advantage of them. A stallion is going to understand he’s in charge and either start doing what he wants, or get frightened and become reactive.

Handsome is a 32 inch red roan pinto stallion. 9 yrs old. Quiet to handle. Broke to
ride. Since he is a stallion, parental supervision is recommended for small
children. Sound. Very good ground manners. Easy keeper. Good in the stall or on
pasture. No bad habits. Has been pastured with mares. Sales are cash only.

I’m going to do something on the blog today that I never do…I’m going to put a smile on the face of all the pro-slaughter asshats, faux rescues and abusive, money-grubbing trainers in America, with one single statement:

I have gotten too busy to maintain this blog.

This probably won’t come as a big shock to my regular readers; you’ve been patiently waiting longer and longer for blog entries and comments to be approved. I kept trying to scramble my schedule and find time to write, but it just isn’t happening, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. So the blog is for sale. It sells with the domain and the rights to all content written to date, which I suspect could be quite lucrative for someone who knows what they are doing (I don’t, and I’m too busy to find out). It is selling to the public with no restrictions; it may or may not go to someone who wishes to continue doing a blog about this subject matter. If you have any desire to bid on it yourself and have your opportunity for a whole lot of horse people to read your two cents worth, here is the listing.

Will I ever do another blog? Maybe, if my schedule changed a lot. I don’t see that in the foreseeable future. Right now I am at the “can I get in a 45 minute nap before I have to do X” point.

Will I still write elsewhere? Maybe. I just did a piece in the July 2011 Horse Illustrated about planning for your horse’s future if something unexpected happened to you. I do enjoy writing the educational, snark-free stuff…truly I do…and I do welcome offers to do so.

I’ll still Tweet. I seem to do a lot of that from horseback, or while waiting in line, no problem, so I’ll do my best to keep spreading the word about the kind of topics I’ve covered here on FHOTD.

Are there stories I wish I could have gotten to? YES. Oh my God…I have so much piled up in my e-mail. But it just isn’t going to happen. I sincerely apologize for all the unread e-mails in my account and the stories I just didn’t have time to deal with. I know some of them are big stories that should have been covered. Again, one of the reasons I’m quitting is because I know I’m not really doing my job here anymore and I am missing things that should be publicized. That said, there are many other blogs and Facebook pages now that share news to the horse community — many more than existed in 2007 when I started the blog. You guys know how to spread the word when the word needs to be spread — you don’t need a particular blog or particular forum to do it.

Am I retiring in response to some threat? LOL, of course not. You all know my response to threats: I have always said, please feel free to sue me if you believe you have cause. So far, haven’t seen a single complaint. And so far, none of the people who were going to shoot me have found me. Well, either that, or they are not very good shots, because I am sitting here typing this.

Hoover is doing great and will be looking for a home soon, if anyone has the desire to have a VERY snuggly older warmblood who has had a rough life reside with them. I would like to get him out of SoCal…he hates the heat and doesn’t do well in it. He does have some fetlock lameness and he’s not quite fat enough that I’d sit on him yet but my best guess is that he’d be fine for light riding but that is all. Honestly, I’d love for him to have a pet home…he’s been through Hell and he’s so happy to be safe now. Big galoot just lays his big old head in my arms for snuggles…E-mail Katie at Second Chance Ranch if you’re interested in giving Hoover a safe spot for the rest of his life.

The best part about doing the blog, bar none, has been the e-mails from readers thanking me for advice that helped them overcome a training problem or resolve a horse health issue, like a senior horse who needed to gain weight. I absolutely love those. I’m glad I could help. Right up there are the happy endings that I know took place for horses posted here for adoption. Some are in the most fabulous homes!

Here are some of the things I hope you have learned (if you didn’t already know them):

- Old horses are never skinny because they are old. Old horses that are skinny have a problem that can be fixed 99% of the time.
- Slaughter is never the right answer. Slaughter provides a paycheck for irresponsible ownership and irresponsible breeding. Are there more horses than homes right now? You bet. The solution is the same sort of anti-breeding campaign that has worked VERY successfully in dogs and cats. I want to see this chart for horses, don’t you?

- Stallions are never ill-behaved because they are stallions. Stallions are ill-behaved because of a human permitting them to bounce around like an orangutan on crack. Expect gelding behavior from your stallion and you will get it from most stallions, of any breed. If he’s still an idiot, that means he needs to be a gelding. Great stallions are not a threat to everyone in a 20 foot radius when led down the aisle.
- There is no miracle about birth. Mosquitos breed. A thirty year old horse that is still in a great home and receiving excellent care…THAT is a miracle and something to be heartily applauded.
- That sick feeling in your stomach is NEVER wrong. If you feel it about a trainer, barn, etc. – RUN and take your horse(s) with you.
- Breeding animals responsibly isn’t easy. It actually takes a lot of research, knowledge and money. Most people should never breed an animal.
- Horses appreciate having a kind, fair, consistent leader — not a best friend that they can plow over and push around.
- That said, temper tantrums are counterproductive in everything from horse training to the job world. Learn to have self control. Not every impulse needs to convert itself into an action. Walking away is always better than losing it.
- Every time you think “oh, I should fix that, but it’ll be fine for tonight” — it won’t be. This is like a law of nature. Fix it tonight.
- Every time you think that something might be a bad idea, it is probably a bad idea. Remember the gal who tied the lead rope to her waist…
- The reason you have to report abuse or neglect is because horses and other animals can’t type or use the telephone. You are the only chance they have. Take pictures FROM THE ROAD…NEVER trespass. Go down to animal control or the sheriff’s and file a report. Call in a few weeks and follow up. If you fear you are being ignored, and that the situation is urgent, call your local media. Post to horsey message boards and blogs with the numbers to call to demand action. Getting a prosecution is a long, difficult but very rewarding road, especially when you see the horses safe in new homes that do take care of them.
- You cannot tell a rescue is good from their web site or Facebook page. Please support GFAS Accredited Rescues or rescues that you can visit in person (ideally, on a regular basis) and verify are taking proper care of their animals. Also look for a lot of before/after pictures proving the horse improved, as well as the ability to account for the whereabouts of horses adopted out years ago.
- You will not enjoy riding and your horse more from attending clinics or watching videos. You will enjoy riding and your horse more from riding a lot and taking lessons from a good trainer so that riding becomes easier and your ability to communicate with your horse improves. The better you ride, the less equine misbehavior you will experience. If you have fear issues, the #1 most valuable thing you can do to combat them is improve your riding, because that makes scary things happen less often.
- Also, on fear issues, allow me to quote something I read on Facebook and loved: “Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes. ~ William Gibson” Stop thinking you’re a shitty rider because your trainer is an insecure asshat who has to yell at and belittle students to make him/herself feel better. GET A NEW TRAINER.
- Turn-out is NOT optional. How well would you perform if you were locked in a shower stall whenever you weren’t at work? All horses need regular turn-out.
- Colic is 99% avoidable with daily turnout, regular rotational deworming (or fecals to determine what is needed), fresh and clean water available 24/7, a low stress environment, sand treatment if you’re in the sandy part of the country, and a consistent diet. If you are having colics frequently, figure out why.
- Proper conditioning is the #1 thing you can do to lower your vet bills and extend your horse’s useful life. When you do not ride all week and then go out on hilly trails for six hours on Saturday, do not come crying to me when your horse pulls a suspensory. That is like you trying to run 20 miles once a week after sitting in your recliner eating Ding Dongs the rest of the time … let’s see you do it. And folks, when your trainer is telling you in a lesson to push your horse past what YOU know your horse’s fitness level is, you have to say no. Ask yourself who will be paying the vet bill…will it be your trainer? Uh, no. So you have to have the guts to say, he’s tired, I want to quit now and cool him out. Even if he’s being bad, do something easy that he can get right, and then quit. There’s no value to making a training “point” that results in a horse that is out of commission for six months!
- It really is true…the vast majority of equine misbehavior results from pain. Before you punish, check for a sore back or neck, lameness, or dental problems. Check saddle fit, make sure the horse hasn’t been crammed into too-small shoes.
- Parents, put a helmet on your child every time they are on a horse. It is a long way down and all it takes is landing wrong to be a quadriplegic. When you are an adult, you can do as you see fit, and assume the risks you see fit, but a 5 year old cannot make those kind of adult choices. While we’re on the topic, stop overmounting your kid…the rest of us are all tired of watching in horror to see if the child will survive the parade on the jiggy horse who looks about to explode, or the hunter round on the horse who is clearly running off, or the barrel run on the horse who is bouncing off the arena walls like the meth head stripper on “Intervention” was bouncing off her room walls.
- No one person has all the answers when it comes to horses. Any of you might come up with an amazing solution to a training or health issue (or diagnose a pesky health issue that the vet couldn’t figure out). Read, read, read, and watch the trainers in your discipline whose horses are both performing well and seem happy (i.e. bright expression, happy ears, fluid movement, a general aura of enthusiasm while performing). I highly recommend The Horse for learning more about horse health. I also highly recommend the Chronicle of the Horse message board as a resource…you’ll find excellent information there.
- Finally, when you are between that proverbial rock and a hard place, and I know those situations happen, euthanasia is (100% of the time) a better solution than the auction. Yes, it will cost a few hundred dollars, so make the call while you still can, after you have made a true good faith effort to place the horse in a checked-out, proper home, but before you are down to your last $50 and your unemployment has run out. The only one who suffers when a horse is euthanized is his owner…he just goes to sleep. I never think of euthanasia as a tragedy. I always think of a horse being shoved onto a double-decker as a tragedy.

Now I have three questions for you guys:

1) What was your favorite blog entry or topic here? For sheer entertainment, I do not think you can beat some of the Parelli stuff I had to comment on. I mean, how can you beat the Parellis telling someone to feed carrots to their biting horse? The only thing that isn’t funny about it is that, for example, a horse showed up in the Enumclaw kill pen a month or two ago that was required to go to slaughter because of how aggressive he was. Well, how do you think he got that way?

2) I also want to know what you think was THE fugliest horse ever posted here. I still say this is the winner:

To whoever bred this horse: You need a new hobby

3) And finally, if you have a horse that you adopted because you saw him/her on this blog, can you give us an update? Extra credit for before/after pictures!

All right – let’s see if we can find a home for one more! This cutie pie is Cricket, at Shiloh Horse Rescue outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. I know someone is out there who would absolutely love this little mare.

At this point, I’m pretty much convinced he’s part cat.

I’m going to show you a picture of a stallion called Sugar Ray San 073. I think most of you will agree that this is a pretty nice horse. His breeders should be proud – they brought something into the world that was nicely put together and that had a pedigree that made sense and pointed to a specific use. He had a lot of potential for success.

And you will all be pleased to hear that someone did a good job training him — such a good job that two years ago, he was being ridden by a 12 year old girl. From all accounts, he is exactly the sort of stallion I like — kind, sweet and knows to stay on his “gelding manners” unless it’s time to breed.

What will shock you, if you haven’t already read the story, is where he wound up. Yeah, that’s the Enumclaw auction and he was in the kill pen.

Somewhere between February 2010 and the present, things went horribly wrong for “Handsome,” as we discovered was his barn name. He was sold at the Hermiston Auction for $900. Well, there is your first problem. As I’ve noted before, if you care at all about a horse, the auction is not the place to sell him. Even though he went for well above kill price, $900, and was not in danger that time, within months he was in the hands of a dealer named Porter, who resold him to — speak of the devil — Chuck Walker in Zillah. Yes, Chuck of CBER fame. HOW $am didn’t see this animal and ransom him to the gullible public for enough money to buy herself a Birkin bag is quite beyond me, but somehow he escaped her attention and got sold, instead, to some guy named Jake who took him to Enumclaw. And there he sat in that kill pen, his papers not having been transferred by ANY of these people (he is still registered to his owner from 2004), no history, no one even knowing he was broke to ride, shaggy and sad and with an old leg injury.

I am sure he was wondering just what the fuck happened. And his skittishness now shows that he’s been handled in the past year by fucktards who think that you have to be rough with a stallion to keep them under control, or some such horseshit. Fortunately for Handsome, he escaped death one more time – Auction Horses publicized him and Katie Merwick of Second Chance Ranch got him bailed out and to safety at a wonderful foster home.

So what have we learned today, FHOTD students?

1) Selling at auction is a really good way to up the odds that some moron will wind up with your horse. Remember that you have NO CONTROL AT ALL when you sell at auction. Those folks I featured yesterday? They can buy your horse. So can the horse tripping people, the freaky-having-sex-with-animals people, and the methed-out-and-living-on-welfare-with-a-barbed-wire-pen people.

2) Failing to show your (broke, sweet, good looking) stallion is a really good way to up the odds that he will slip through the cracks at some point. Think about it. If one of the top stallions in your favorite breed wound up at a local sale ten years later, a horse you’d seen shown many times, that name would jump right out at you, wouldn’t it? Even if you hadn’t heard it in a while? Showing creates name recognition. Name recognition is often the only thing that stands between a horse and death. Think about it, those of you who like to argue that showing isn’t everything. Nope, it isn’t, but it sure as hell does create some life insurance for a horse in case the unexpected happens and you are not able to keep him in your ownership his entire life.

3) TRANSFER THE DAMN PAPERS WHEN YOU GET A HORSE. Katie has managed to assemble the history on this horse but it took a while. She had to rescue first and research later. She pulled him not knowing if he was broke — a big deal given that he is about to be a gelding. Up to date papers would have made a big difference to this horse when his neck was on the chopping block.

4) I don’t care how nice it is, someone can fuck it up in a hurry and render it damn near unrecognizable and the next thing you know, it is a steak. We all need to be responsible and do our very best to keep that from happening. This horse could have had a tune-up to be show ready and been sold for a heck of a lot more than $900. Yeah, it would have been more work than just running him to Hermiston — but it was the right thing to do.

As Katie said, “Every person who has known him during his life (other than the horse trader), has emphatically stated what a NICE horse this is. He is described as “special”, “amazing”, wonderful, kind… and YET he landed at FOUR feedlots (Cathy in: or auctions), nearly going to slaughter every time in about a year’s time.” Yep. This can and does happen to VERY nice horses. You are the person who has the power to keep it from happening very nice horses that used to be yours. Please put in that effort to sell to a real, quality home and don’t use the auction as a dumping ground for what doesn’t quite fit in to your breeding program. I know it’s the easy way to have it off the feed bill, but you have to live with yourself and I do believe the former owners on this horse regret that they didn’t do more to ensure his safety.

Handsome is safe now and being gelded. If you’d like to make a donation to help him, the paypal is info@secondchanceranch.org and your donations are tax-deductible and very much appreciated. I hear there are a few adopters interested already. Personally, I’m really hoping he gets a little girl of his own. If he was good enough to pack one around as a stallion, he’s going to make a rock star of a gelding!

Someone starts a breeding farm with a small, select herd of quality animals and a romanticized idea of what owning a breeding farm is like. Usually it’s a middle aged woman, as it is here – today’s wackjob is Byrde Lynn Hill. (Who went to Stanford and claims to have a Ph.D…apparent proof for the theory that a lot of crazy people go into psychology in order to understand themselves better. Apparently that failed.) These folks have no sense of reality whatsoever. They are NOT, trust me, picturing themselves shoveling shit during bad weather, walking a colicky pregnant mare at 2 a.m. or even having a wrestling session with a recalcitrant weanling who’s fairly sure the halter is going to eat his face. Nope, in their fantasy world, flowing-maned ponies dance merrily around them like Bambi and friends, reproducing tiny, flowing-maned replicas of themselves willy-nilly, and people come from far and wide to marvel at the most byooootiful horses in teh worldz and pay a million zillion dollars for them. Uh-huh.

As those of us who actually take proper care of horses know, it is not romantic, clean or easy. Horses require care at inconvenient times (like Christmas! I’ve had an all-day Christmas colic, who else???). Cute little foals kick you and nip you, and regal stallions will use your ass for a doormat if you don’t know how to handle them (or don’t handle them regularly). Of course, Delusional Dora here had to learn the hard way so she bred like a million zillion (or at least 100 or so) Lusitanos and then – are ya ready for the HUGE SHOCKER? – couldn’t sell them! So of course, things went to Hell in a handbasket in a big hurry, including:

- Horses refused medical care
- Horses having to be destroyed by employees
- Atrocious wire cuts
- Scars and laming because of unsafe fencing conditions
- Horses growing into their own halters resulting in maggot infestations

And of course they were all running wild and nobody had ANY freaking idea who sired what. Here’s a report from the comments about one visit to the ranch:

We observed several mature stallions housed individually in pens with no shelter, no food or water (water containers were empty) dread locks, and feet that were so grown out they were unable to stand or walk properly. Other stallions were housed in single stalls with no turn out or attention, some with food and others were self mutilating and beyond trying to pace. When I asked to take a stallion out to see his condition/movement (Toqar and Nimbus) I was told by Byrdie we couldn’t take any out “…because it will upset the others.” We witnessed a number of other injured, wormy and underfed horses (some with injuries more than a year old and festering) while we were there. Though I originally visited with the intention of purchasing stallions (which Byrdie immediately raised the price on to more than $50k and with no pre-vet possible) I made offers (more than generous considering the quality of the mares who were at this point unknown, undersized, etc) just to get a dozen of them out of there and give them money for hay. Byrdie’s response to my offer was refusal on most of the mares (because she wanted to keep those particular mares for herself) and a ridiculous asking price of $18k each for the others. Again, the others that I would be allowed to buy were of unknown heritage, wormy, undersized, in questionable health and could not be vetted, or most likely, ever even registered.

The story isn’t even shocking to me, because we have heard it SO many times. It’s a broken record. Too many horses, shitty care, and unrealistic sale prices! The trifecta of backyard breeding wackjobs! The thing that DOES shock me here is IALHA’s response:

“Notice of Disciplinary Action: The Board of Directors of the IALHA has considered a complaint/hearing on matters relating to the Registry against Ms. Byrde Lynn Hill Baxter, who also operates under the trade names of Lusitano Legacy and Carpe Diem Farms. The Hearing Committee and thereafter Board of Directors found that Ms. Hill’s behavior in the matter considered does not meet the standard accepted of members of our association. Based on this decision, the IALHA has revoked Ms. Hill’s membership and will decline to publish any advertising for Ms. Hill for a period of five years, effective August 24, 2010.

In addition, the IALHA has revoked Ms. Hill’s right to register horses with IALHA for a period of one year, effective August 24, 2010. At the direction of the Board of Directors, this notice is being published via News Brief as well as in the Andalusian magazine.”

FHOTD back in: HOLY SHIT. A registry actually took a stand against a BYB’ing, hoarding piece of shit member? OMFG! I cannot believe it. You guys deserve a freaking MEDAL. Maybe now someone ELSE will grow a pair and discipline the people who run these disgusting pony mills.

But I’ll still eat my damn hat if I ever see such a thing from AQHA…and while we are at it, WTF is wrong with animal control that no action has been taken against this woman? It’s apparently in Wallowa County, Oregon…do I guess correctly that this is one of those wonderful enforcement-free rural zones where you may feel free to neglect all the animals you wish? From the comments on those articles, no one ever visited this ranch that did not leave horrified. Why hasn’t anything been done?

The saga seems to have started in May, with this message board thread from the upset neighbor. Read the whole thing, it’s very informative:

My psycho bitch neighbor has a stallion in her garage!

Turns out the stallion was a very nice Thoroughbred named Appalachian Chief. He was raced by some very nice people at Silver Duck Farm, who I understand are totally fricken’ horrified by where he wound up, but of course have no legal claim to him since they sold him to Beasley Sporthorses, and Beasley Sporthorses sold him to this asshat, Margaret Butterwick, who owns him now and seems to be either (a) truly mentally ill or (b) a Cruella deVil type who enjoys watching the poor critter try to find something to eat out of a mold-encrusted round bale.

(I’m not saying Beasley Sporthorses necessarily did anything wrong here. For all I know. Margaret was taking her meds at the time she bought him and boarding the horse at a nice facility. I don’t think anybody knowingly sells a horse to go live in a garage, but then again, maybe they did just take the money and run. I have no idea. They should feel free to comment. I am just reporting on the chain of ownership here.)

For the next six months, everybody on the Internet screamed and yelled and called the OSPCA. (I had no idea. First I heard of this was Wednesday, but then I have had a very busy year and very rarely am able to read other boards like I used to). The OSPCA claims they did everything they were supposed to and eventually they issued this press release:

Psycho Bitch Not Breaking Any Laws

You know, they are probably telling the honest truth. What you Canadians have to realize is that your laws SUCK. If this horse was on the West coast of the U.S. standing in shit with no turnout, I could get him seized, pretty much no problem. If what is in that press release is ALL that is in your law (and I don’t know that it is, but you’d think the OSPCA would be able to quote the law correctly), there is no sanitation standard…none at all. Nor is there anything in there about providing clean water and edible, mold-free hay. You can’t expect the OSPCA to seize horses with laws that don’t exist. They may indeed be a f’ed up organization and may indeed not be doing a great job, but you have to show me which laws they’re ignoring, and I don’t see that detailed anywhere, so I have to assume they’re stuck in the unpleasant situation of being criticized for things beyond their control. The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (pics at that link) details that the OSPCA has sanitation standards and feed standards on their web site, but no one is citing the actual law here. So is there applicable law or not? If there is no law, you are all barking up the wrong tree.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not AT ALL defending Queen Asshat the owner. I am SURE the below paragraph is totally truthful:

“One potential buyer had to spend upwards of 4 hours listening to Chief’s owner tell them how smart she is, how she outsmarts the OSPCA by having food present because that is all they need to see, about how she wins ‘wrongful dismissal’ suits, about how she does not believe in feeding horses unless they are being worked!”

The stupid is EVERYWHERE and this woman’s behavior has clearly crossed the line to intentional abuse of her horse. In fact, I would imagine at this point she is bound and determined to abuse the horse as long as she can just to flip the bird to everybody who has a problem with what she is doing. But let’s try to figure out who is to blame for the lack of action here. Is it the OSPCA, or is is that there is no law allowing the OSPCA to take action? There is no point seizing the horse if that seizure won’t be upheld. You might as well throw the taxpayers’ money in the toilet.

I was just about to post this and was informed that the horse WAS removed today. By whom or to where, I do not know. Story developing…

I have posted him before, but I just love this horse. Gentry is a Saddlebred gelding rescued by Shiloh Horse Rescue from the Fallon, NV feedlot. He was pretty brain fried and clearly had been from a gaited horse barn that was not very nice to him, but he has made great progress and is now ready for a new home. I just think he is adorable! I would love to hear that he has a home of his very own this holiday season.

Heck, I know of a Bey Shah/Ivanhoe Tsultan grandson, freaking CUTE and sound, up for grabs.
It’s sad, and it’s only October…much more to come. And lots of foals being born this spring with absolutely no home waiting for them and no guarantee their mom will even live long enough to nurse them. Plenty of horses still showing up in the kill pens. Don’t like that? Spay, neuter and geld. Offer to pay for gelding if you have a neighbor like Josh. It’ll be $100 well spent and you’ll feel better!

(Or take your $100 and go get that mare. Honestly, that one is WAY too nice to go to kill, papers or not.)

Ad #1 for a seven year old stallion called Convoys Silky – and it was posted yesterday. Emphasis added:

“2003 palomino 15h AQHA stallion. Convoys Silky has been used as a breeding stallion and is not broke at this time but is very easy to work with and would make an excellent performance horse. He is an outstanding mover and has a wonderful temperment! Free to a good home as long as I can havve the opportunity to breed two mares to him next season.”

Â

Now, here he is on her web site (scroll down). With this description: “CONVOY’S SILKY 2003 palomino AQHA stallion green broke(Reg #4363748) $5000″

Â

Hey, either he IS or he ISN’T. There’s no date on the second listing, but I don’t think you got him broke since yesterday so I can only imagine you were originally lying through your teeth to try to get someone to pay, apparently, a bit over five thousand times what the horse ultimately turned out to be worth, given that now he’s free. What happened? Did someone tell YOU to get on him first? If so, good for them. So now he’s unbroke, huh? ROTFL.

First of all, if he has ZERO VALUE, why do you need two more foals by him? The world needs NO more foals by him. He needs to be gelded and broke out. Second of all, if you have all these horses you claim are worth five figures, as shown on your sale page, how can you argue you are too broke to have Mr. Clunky-but-Yeller trained before you try to sell him? He is seven, going on eight. Even by the most conservative estimate, and you guys all know I’m a fan of starting late, he needs to be walk-trot-canter broke by now. Why did he sit around doing nothing in your ownership? And now you are dumping him for free? What kind of home do you think is going to come get your free, yeller, unbroke seven year old stallion? Welcome to the Mexican rodeo…poor pony.Â

Â

So then I went to her web site and found this monstrosity standing at stud. His name is Mind Ya Bizness. I am sure she is wishing I would mind mine, but I’m sorry, OMFG, LOOK AT THOSE FRONT LEGS! Why would you reproduce that…ever?  And he’s generally unimpressive from the knees up too…short-necked, downhill, and common. Her web site says he will be gelded after the 2010 breeding season. He should have been gelded before ANY breeding season. Really, I would love to hear this person’s explanation for why she thought this should ever breed on. I cannot imagine what goes through your head when you look at a horse like this and say, YEAH, let’s stand him at stud this year. The Second Race blog seems to think it’s a wonderful heartwarming story that he’s standing at stud now. Excuse me while I throw up – folks, being able to reproduce is NOT an accomplishment. It’s not like, yay, he came back from starvation and NOW HE CAN MAKE BAYBEEZ! YAY! Rehabbing him WAS an accomplishment, breeding him is a FAIL.  This is a completely mediocre stud that will never have a performance record. You cannot blame starvation for all of his conformational defects. If she had gelded him and decided to keep him as a pet to make up for his horrible past, now that would be a heartwarming story! But nope, she has to try to make a buck off of him first. Blech.Â
Â

Â

You all know that I am NOT against breeding a quality rescued horse, either. But it has to be a QUALITY one! For example, let’s say you hit the jackpot and find a Superior pleasure horse or a National Champion at a low end auction – you BET, you can breed that once he’s back to health. I don’t think being rescued = not breeding quality. But they have to be high quality to begin with, not something that, even with fantastic care, would have still been a backyard breeder’s mistake.

Â

This is just one of those WTF farms. She has some really nice horses, like Saressa, but she also has some hideous fuglies, and she does not seem to know the difference. Look, I found the worst set of posty hocks that I have EVER seen on a TB mare. And that’s a broodmare! Why? Why? Why? I mean, it’s nice that everybody is well fed and well cared for and I will give kudos on that, but like a lot of places, this person is just a breeding addict. This is a classic example of someone that just does not understand 75% of what she owns is “pet quality,” to borrow a term from the dog people. And the pet quality horses just aren’t finding homes these days – demand is down, so people can afford better horses and the better horses are what they’re buying. I mean, who wouldn’t take a BMW over a Hyundai for the same price? Use some common sense.

Â

Please stop. Please. We just do not have homes for all the crap that you and people like you are creating. If something doesn’t have a solid performance record, it does not need to stand at stud. We have plenty of stallions that DO have performance records for people to choose from, horses that have proved they can excel at something and deserve to breed on. Yes, putting a performance record on a stallion is expensive, time-consuming and generally frustrating – trust me, I know! - but if you are a horse lover, and I assume most breeders are, don’t you want to do the best you can to make sure your stallion’s foals don’t wind up on a double-decker?Â

Â

Oh, and try being honest in your sale ads – it works a lot better that way, really!Â

The names have not been changed a bit – you can see exactly who is an asshole and who is a decent person in this facebook thread! This dude seems to think it’s okay to dump his apparently aggressive (gee, I can’t imagine why, dealing with your mean, nasty old ass) paint stallion on Facebook for free to “anyone who will take him.” Â The horse’s name is Wizonbytexas.Leland is apparently a photographer. Â He looks to be fairly successful. Â I’ll bet just about anything Leland currently has available the $200 or less it would cost to geld the poor horse and see if, you know, that might actually change his attitude.

Â

‘Course then I read down further and I realized WHY the horse is so fucked up: “Leland Neff: Lounges, bathes, clips, stands for farrier, two years of natural hormanship training, trailers.

Â

“YEP! WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED!  Another huge Natural Horsemanship FAIL that is going to result in this horse going to slaughter or hurting more people unless a talented traditional trainer picks him up and is able to fix him – and I wish them luck because I am sure he is even more rank than he was to begin with after two years of being NH’ed by some idiot. (Or maybe it’s the two years of NH that made him rank. Who knows?)  So now Leland has gotten hurt a bunch by the horse and is dumping him.  Awesome!

Â

Â

Oh, and when someone SUGGESTS gelding him, here’s the response: “I think that it would cool him off some but also think maybe his only saving grace is that he is a beautiful paint stallion so although I’ll never breed anything to him there are paint breeders that might like him in their program. I’m sticking to my “calm” thoroughbreds.”

Â

WHAT A STUPID SONOVABITCH YOU ARE!  Why would you WANT a rank horse to breed on?  Do you have NO sense of responsibility toward horses at all?  Please get out of Thoroughbreds, too.  That breed doesn’t need this kind of moronic thinking either.

People like you, Leland, are TOTALLY the problem. Â TOTALLY the problem. Â The worst part is, you probably think you’re a victim and will have even more of that attitude when someone tells you about this blog entry.Â

Finally, I googled the horse’s name and got my first giggle of the morning. You know, using your horse’s name as your dating site alias is not the most discreet way to go about it if you were trying to be discreet. Just a suggestion!
