Yes, Save a Forgotten Equine has rescued yet another victim of Horse-Eating Fence, aka Barbed Wire. In the four years that I have been doing this blog, I have heard a LOT of excuses for still having horses out on barbed wire:

1. My horses are “smart” and don’t go near the fence.
2. My horses have never been hurt on it.
3. We have too much acreage to change the fence.
4. It’s only temporary until I find another place to board.
5. It’s the only place I can afford to keep my horses.
6. I rent and they won’t let me change the fence.
7. The horses are out with the cows so we have to have barbed wire.
8. But everyone in my area has their horses out on barbed wire!

I have heard it all. You are not going to come up with a new excuse, trust me. Not a single one of these excuses is valid. If you own a thousand acres, fence off what you can afford to fence off with horse-safe fence for your horses, and run the cattle on the remainder. If you rent, put in temporary fencing inside the perimeter of the fence that you are not allowed to change. And as to the last excuse, as my mother used to say, if everybody jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you do it?

Yes, a horse can get hurt on any fence (heck, a horse can get hurt on anything, and we’ve all seen freak accidents) but barbed wire is truly horse-eating fence. Folks, there is a reason they put this stuff on top of PRISON fence! It will grab YOU and rip your leg just as sure as it will do that to your horse.

Facts are facts — if you have barbed wire, you are playing a very dangerous game called “How long can I get away with this before something horrible happens?” The stories are endless and include horses found after having gotten caught in the fence and bled to death. This particular mare whose injury I pictured is safe now, and here is the “after” pic now that she has seen a vet.

If you’d like to help SAFE with her rehab, you can donate here – but even SAFE would tell you, don’t send them money if that money should be going toward replacing barbed wire on your own property. Just get up and do it – it’s a weekend and there is no time like the present!

Oh, and I just heard Dean Solomon is in jail AGAIN and facing new cruelty charges. Man, you can NOT teach that old dog a new trick. Details to come …

I showed you Lucero at Shiloh in a video taken last year, last week. I wanted to post a still pic taken recently so that you can see how wonderfully this filly has filled out with proper care. She is coming two and looking for a home – contact Shiloh Horse Rescue for details!

Summer vacation season is fast-approaching, so I thought it was a perfect time for a repost of this blog about how to find a quality horsesitter and be able to vacation without worries!

I read a story once – it might even have been a reader of this blog’s comment – where a young lady found the man of her dreams and headed off on a European honeymoon with him. She entrusted her much-loved cat to her best friend, who promised to come by and care for him. Confident that kitty would be loved and provided for, she got married and headed off for a wonderful two weeks.

She came home to…a dying cat.

Yes, Best Friend had completely failed to do as she had agreed and stop by to care for the cat. Without even water, he was too far gone and could not be saved. The newly-married girl, who should have been enjoying one of the happiest times of her life, was plunged into deep depression and guilt over the entire incident. It brings up a great question – really, who CAN you trust to care for your pets? With so many of us heading out for holiday trips, it’s a timely topic. Here are my thoughts on ensuring a similar train wreck never happens to you.

1. Backup. Even the most responsible person may have a crisis of their own. Ensure that whoever is watching your pets has several numbers to call of people who can come by in a pinch and provide care. Discuss whatever system will work for ensuring those people have the access they need – keys, gate codes, etc. If you are using someone you have not used before, having someone else make some visits to ensure all is well is a great idea.

2. Site-Check Yourself! Look at your property like you are a rescuer inspecting it to see if it is a safe place for an animal to live. Check for places in the fence where an animal could escape or get injured, loose nails, loose wire and other hazards. The last thing you want to have happen is an escape or a horse get hung up in fence when someone is only stopping by twice a day to feed.

3. Plan and Prepare. Have plenty of everything – hay, grain, etc. And label things! One friend came home to find that her non-horsey hubby had fed the horses straw the whole time she was gone. It is always best to have a real horseperson care for the horses for just this sort of reason, but if you are trusting a non-horsey family member, make it easy for them with clear signs, labels, and measuring cups/scoops.

4. Plan and Prepare for ANYTHING. What happens if the power goes out? Do you have a generator? Does the sitter know how to use it – for sure? Any chance the pipes will freeze and getting water will be a problem? What then? We ALL know how often Murphy’s Law applies around animals…odds are if you’re ready for anything, it won’t happen, but if you’re not, you can bet on it taking place.

5. Hire like a H.R. Director! Actually check references, and ideally use someone that someone you know has used before. Look them up in your local court’s web site, if they have a search feature. This is not an invasion of privacy. I don’t care if someone does that to me because I know there’s no animal cruelty case with my name on it.

6. Consider commercial boarding for your dogs and cats. Commercial boarding is not always bad. I would particularly recommend Petsmart, which offers 24/7 supervision at their Petshotels. Commercial boarding is a great choice for (a) animals that pose a high risk of escape – door dashers, etc. (b) animals that LOVE to socialize, like the dog who loves to play with other dogs and is lonely alone. (c) animals that are destructive – the chewers, the stress-pee’ers, the diggers. Stick with in-home, if possible, for kitties unless they’re social and outgoing, and small dogs that are always cold and are very upset by change. Check out the facility that you use and find out how often the animals get out of their cages, what the standards are for cleanliness, and what the standards are for disease control. Don’t use a place that lets anyone in the door without all vaccinations, or a place that does not have a quarantine area that is totally separate for an animal that comes down with kennel cough or an upper respiratory.

7. Inform! You know that Levi and Buffy will kick the living shit out of each other if turned out in the same field, that FluffyPony doesn’t straight tie, that Shadow can’t go anywhere near the goats or he’ll have heart failure and snort all day, and that Champ has been known to kick if you try to clean the stall with him in it. Your pet sitter has no way of knowing information like this unless you tell her. Barn stuff too – the hot water won’t come on unless you switch the valve 5 feet higher up the wall on, etc. Sit down when it’s quiet and write down everything you can think of.

8. Be accessible. Most likely you are not going to some remote corner of the world where there is no way to contact you. Make sure everybody has your cell phone and your cell phone is always on, loud enough to hear at parties. Give some backup contacts like good horsey friends who have the authority to make decisions about whether or not to call the vet in your absence. And make sure everybody knows which vet you prefer. This information should always be posted in the barn. Vets enjoy the holidays, too, so list at least 3 choices in case some of your vets are out of town.

9. Don’t leave your petsitter a problem. If an animal needs to go to the vet, get them in there early this week before you take off. Don’t think that maybe it will be okay ’til you get back – that almost always goes bad!

10. If you have pets that are elderly or in some way in a chronic precarious health condition (including pregnancy!), pay the money and get someone who actually stays at your house and is there almost all of the time. Someone dropping by twice a day to feed and water is just too risky – what if something goes wrong and the animal suffers for 8 hours, or worse yet, your pet sitter arrives to find a dying pet? Just among my circle of friends this holiday season, I’ve seen a mare – that was ultrasounded without this being discovered – turn out to be carrying twins and abort them and prolapse her uterus. If they had not been home, she would have died. Can you imagine coming home to that scene? Just pay the money – you won’t regret it.

What experiences can you share about petsitters that worked out or didn’t? Who was great? Who was a nightmare? How do you make sure your animals are safe and cared for without totally giving up any ability on your part to travel and have a life?

This is a re-run but given today’s news story coupled with the fact that most of you are at home today and do have time to spend an hour checking your barn for hazards, I think it’s a good time for a repost! Spend that hour before you start partying. You surely will not regret it.

We just had a local barn fire where 15 boarded horses died (caused by a space heater in the tack room) so I want to talk about this.

Losing a horse in a barn fire is probably my worst nightmare. I fear it more than finding out a horse of mine went to slaughter. I think many horsepeople would agree with me that there’s nothing more horrifying than the thought of your horse burning to death locked in a stall. But do you really know how to minimize your chances of this happening? Do you know if your barn, or the one you board at, is a fire risk?

I realized I didn’t know much about this. I mean, I knew the obvious – no smoking in the barn, watch out for faulty wiring or outlets that spark. But I didn’t know enough, so I decided to do some research and talk about this today.

Check out this great site on preventing barn fires. Read her charts and stats about how often it happens. It’ll scare you right out to your barn to start de-cobwebbing.

Some of the basic tips:

1. Never block doors or aisleways. Don’t leave the manure spreader parked in the aisle – I know a lot of barns that will do that, because they don’t have an equipment storage shed. I know, I know, but just tarp it if you don’t. You don’t want to be scrambling over a spreader to try to evacuate horses.

2. Barns should have wide enough doors that two handlers with horses can exit simultaneously. Can you open your barn door with one hand if your other is being used to control a panicking horse? I’ve been in a lot of barns where I had to throw my body against the main door to make it budge.

3. Floor to ceiling dividers every 4 stalls or so in a large barn can prevent fires from spreading. (They are not a bad idea anyway – they give you places to put horses in quarantine, or stallion stalls)

4. Hay storage in a separate building is the ideal but if not possible, hay lofts are preferable to simply storing hay in aisles or stalls. Loveland doesn’t comment on the common practice of storing hay in the back of the riding arena. I’ve always thought that seems fairly safe because fire doesn’t spread through dirt with nothing to feed on, but I could be wrong.

5. Electrical appliances like space heaters and coffee makers should be unplugged when not in use. Space heaters should shut off automatically if tipped over. I am hearing reports that the space heater that caused the recent fire was so old it didn’t have an automatic shut-off. New ones that do shut off are a whopping $10 at Wal-Mart.

6. For those of you in areas that have brush fires, like southern California, clear the brush from around the barn. Loveland even suggests leaving a 15 foot wide strip of dirt between your pasture and the road because people throw cigarettes out of car windows.

Past that, most of the advice is the common sense we already know (or hopefully do) – watch for hazards like exposed wiring or smoking in the barn. Cobwebs are flammable – it’s worth taking the time to remove them. Don’t store flammable things in or near the barn – whether it’s gasoline for the tractor, a pile of old wood fence or a stack of heating wood.

I had to laugh at this: “Sprinkler systems are effective suppression devices and contrary to commonly-held notions, no person or animal has drowned under the spray, nor panicked as a result of the shower.” Ha ha. Typical excuse developed for not doing something that is a good idea but costs money. Now, I’ll admit I’ve never priced out a sprinkler system for a boarding barn so I don’t know if the cost is prohibitive — but it seems to me it might be a pretty good investment if you want to keep your horses as safe as possible.

Read the website – she gives great advice about how to react if you do encounter a fire, to maximize the chances that no lives will be lost. Read the logs – you’ll see valuable information about how fires start. How many of you light your show horses 24/7 with auxiliary lights? Do you know that those lights are safe? Are they far enough away that a horse cannot chew on the wiring? Do you, right now, have a heat lamp on baby animals in your barn? Here’s one they probably didn’t anticipate – “plastic feed sacks set afire after being pulled into generator by foal.” All the horses were rescued, that time.

You know, all the fire safety stuff is the sort of routine maintenance that we all get busy and have trouble finding time to do. And it’s true, 99% of us are going to dodge the bullet and never have a barn fire. But I don’t know anybody who’s been in the 1% that has ever really recovered from it – so please put reading this information and taking the advice on your to-do list this holiday. It’s one of the nicest holiday presents you can give your horses!

I am seriously running out of patience with people like this one who have money to do eventing and all sorts of fun stuff but apparently cannot spend a couple of hundred dollars in supplies and kick their fiance in the ass a few times to help them FIX THEIR FUCKING FENCE.

No, I don’t have any sympathy for you, Heidi. I only have sympathy for your poor mare, who is now dead because YOU DIDN’T REPLACE THE BARBED WIRE ON YOUR PROPERTY.

She sounds like a great mare. I mean, who knows why the FUCK you made her do a dressage test with a hematoma on her back or evented her with her back and a shoulder out. I guess it just shows that she was a good mare and you were a bad owner. By the way, maybe you should pray harder as apparently God did not protect your horses from your shitty fence just because you brag about what a great Christian you are all over your Facebook page. Guess God expects you to get off your ass and FIX YOUR FENCE, ya think?

I know what Heidi’s reaction to this is going to be. I’m psychic that way. She will e-mail about what a MEEEEAAAANIE I am for calling her out when clearly she’s suffering (though she’s not the one that wound up with her leg half ripped off – I sure would rather be SAD than have my leg ripped halfway off and die, wouldn’t you?). Some of her buddies will tell her she should ignore me and that I’m just a bitch who wishes she had Heidi’s wonderful life and blah blah. That’s OK Heidi. Stay ignorant. Leave that Friesian stallion out there on the crap fence too. I guess that’s one way of keeping his unapproved cross-bred piece of shit babies from going to slaughter – they won’t make it THAT far. They’ll die on the fence!

But I know, it’s not your fault, nothing is your fault, right? You went to horse college! You’re, like, a horse professional, aren’t you, Heidi? And I know you couldn’t possibly be expected to get out there and perform the hideously SIMPLE task of replacing the barbed wire with hot tape. You are way too busy with important tasks like uploading pictures of yourself making duckface to your Facebook.

P.S. Your responsible horse-owning friends are the ones who sent this to me. Apparently you don’t listen to people who try to more subtly hit you with a clue-by-four. So we’ll try this in the hopes of saving your remaining horses!

P.P.S. I removed the last name only because some of the people who read this blog apparently do not have any self-control. Maybe if I make it harder to find people who are featured, then only the smart people – the ones capable of writing a coherent e-mail and expressing their legally protected opinion about the person’s behavior – will manage to track them down and the immature/stupid who think it is appropriate to threaten people (it’s not, and it’s not legal, and I won’t protect you if you do it) won’t have the necessary problem-solving skills to figure out how to make contact, and we can avoid some drama. You are completely within your rights to tell someone that you think they’re an idiot – this is America. But tell them once, and don’t continue to harass them or make threats, or you may find yourself in a heap of trouble. If you aren’t sure where the line is, stay away from it altogether and keep your comments IN the comments. Finally, it is always anyone’s right who is featured here to respond – that’s what the comments are for. I gotta say, there is a WHOLE lot of drama around that whole Jack Knife Hollow thing – you guys should have a reality show, you’re ALL fighting and accusing each other of everything down there. Must not be much else to do!
2. It’s cheap.
3. It doesn’t involve any heavy lifting or physical strength.
4. It can save you a ton of money not to mention your horses a lot of pain!

What is it? Installing t-post caps!

Despite the fact that these things are about 50 cents each, I still see horse properties without them. These properties may have perfect safe fence stretched between those posts – usually electric tape or wire, sometimes coated wire, sometimes wire mesh (reasonably safe if tight and small weave so a hoof can’t go through), but the sharp t-post tops are just waiting for a horse to plunk some part of their body down on them and, believe me, it happens.

One of my readers just sent me this picture – and this is in the middle of the horse healing up! The horse did recover, but spending 50 cents for a t-post cap on the top of what she landed on would have prevented this in the first place. Horses try to jump and stake themselves on the sharp posts, or they do what one of my mares did in 1998 and put their neck/head down on it (she was probably just trying to scratch, but she tore a hole in her jugular vein and nearly bled to death). I know you think you own the world’s most sensible old horse, but he’s still a horse and you cannot predict what they will do 100%. An injury like this means you’ll be spending time before and after work washing it and wrapping it in all kinds of weather, not to mention paying plenty to the vet for follow up visits, antibiotics and ointment. Trust me, it is MUCH cheaper to use the caps!

Yes, I have had horses who pull the t-posts caps off and play with them — just use some Krazy Glue to put them on there in a more permanent way. Putting those caps on, if you haven’t done so already, is the perfect weekend project that you probably won’t even break a sweat doing.

While we’re on topic, if you have a cool before-and-after picture showing how you fixed up the fence (or facilities in general) of your new horse property, feel free to share those. You may motivate your fellow readers, and hey, you deserve a little acknowledgement for your hard work! Remember, direct links only (they start with http) and only the “i” link from photobucket, not the “s” link. The picture will not show up for you. It will show up when I moderate. Links must end with .jpg or .gif.

If you’re looking for a big draft cross trail companion, Shiloh Horse Rescue in Nevada has just started Latte under saddle, and from this first ride video, I’d say odds are good she will be an easy one to continue training. This is a pretty good example, too, of how to do a first ride. #1, the horse has a halter on over the bridle and that is what the ground person is using for control – there’s no rope snapped to the bit, as I see people do. #2, the horse is not forced to stand perfectly still for the first mounting – the steps sideways as she balances herself are allowed and she’s not punished for them. #3, the rider is as quiet as possible, which helps the mare have a good, non-scary experience, and only has the ball of their foot in the stirrup (this is how you don’t wind up hung up and inventing silly devices like the “imprinter”). #4, they’re in the round pen – a safe, small place for the mare to get used to this new idea. #5, all they do is walk. I see so many people screw up the first ride by asking too much and making it scary, and you’re just laying a foundation for trouble if you do that, even if you don’t get that trouble during that first ride. Maybe the only thing I’d change is that the ground person should be next to the horse, not out in front in case she leaps forward, but overall, this is a good example of a safe and smart first ride. Anyway, if you’re interested in Latte, contact Shiloh – they’d love to hear from you!

When I was a kid, I read one of those books – it was probably the Summer Pony one – where the parents built a stall in their garage for their daughter’s pony. I thought that sounded like a great idea. Â I mean, we had a pie-shaped suburban lot. Â The back was pretty wide, affording plenty of room for a kid and a dog to get up to speed. Â Surely there was enough room there to turn out a pony, if we added some fence. Â My mother’s explanation of subdivision HOA rules sounded far too ridiculous for a six-year-old to believe could be true. Â If it was OUR house, why couldn’t we keep OUR pony at it?

I grew up and learned about HOA’s (though I still think they’re largely ridiculous – particularly that part I grew up with about how we had to all have the same lamp out front) and developed a deep and abiding hatred of suburbia, based upon my earliest recollections of it as a Place You Couldn’t Keep Ponies. Â But when I had a question this week about how much space it really takes to keep a horse, I decided to Zillow my childhood home and see just how large that yard had been. Â It turns out it was just over a quarter of an acre. Â So, a huge and wonderful turnout for a horse if you are in Southern California, and not big enough to keep anything bigger than chickens in the rest of the U.S.!

The space issue is an excellent question. Â I just adopted out a Thoroughbred mare to a place that is probably a quarter of an acre – but she’s 24 years old. Â The space is clean, the fence is new, there’s a large, tall run-in shed and poop is picked up daily. Â She shares it with two alpacas and there hasn’t been the slightest issue. Â Shortly thereafter, I was asked to look at a horse just down the street that some impulsive lady had purchased at the Enumclaw auction and was now dumping on Craigslist. Â OMG. Â Same amount of space, but full of crap including a trampoline and numerous other hazards and junk – and the horse was a six year old OTTB! Â A rescuer friend snatched him up quickly before he had a chance to get hurt.

There are four main issues to consider when asking yourself how much space a horse really needs. Â The first one is safety. Â If you have more than one horse, someone is going to be the boss and it’s smart to give the #2 horse sufficient space to get away from the tough guy. Â In a small area, horses are more likely to be cornered and kicked or bitten. Â That’s why all those horses on a kill buyer’s lot are so marked up – there’s just no space to get away. Â So, if you have two twenty-something sweethearts that have been together for years, they may do just fine in a fairly small area, but lose one and replace him with a four year old, and you’re likely to have problems. Â Another issue is how active the horse(s) are. Â The senior Thoroughbred I mentioned above rarely even breaks into a trot on her own. Â A young one that needs to run needs the space to do so, or you are likely to have a heck of a time with him under saddle. Â Southern California is full of young Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods locked in stalls or 10 x 15 pipe corrals. Â I watch their owners longe and longe, trying to make up for the lack of turnout and space to run, and many of these horses are still nuts. Â Seriously, I’ve never seen as many people offloaded at any barn as I have at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Â It is like the rodeo over there – and I think it’s all about lack of turnout. Â (They do have some paddocks, but turnout is not included in board, so many horses sit all day while the owners work). Â A final factor about space is what is the space like? Â A perfectly flat and mostly clear half acre with no significant mud problem is a vastly superior horse home than ten acres that are thick with trees and turn into a swamp come October.

The second issue is sanitation. Â If you are going to have horses on a small area, you absolutely have to get out there and pick up poop. Â Yes, in the pasture. Â I know, I know. Â The first time I saw someone do this, I too thought they were off their rocker – but it’s actually an unavoidable part of decent quality horsekeeping on a small property. Â If you’ve got more acreage, you may be able to just drag the pastures or even let nature take its course, depending, but if you’ve got fifteen horses on five acres, get the wheelbarrow – you’ve got a lot of work to do if you don’t want your property to be a breeding ground for parasites. Â Don’t think regular deworming will fix the problem. Â Horses shouldn’t eat off their own excrement, nor should they stand in it, period. Â In nature, they constantly move and travel so that this isn’t an issue. Â If you’re going to lock them up, it’s your job to clean up. Â You’ll never get a horse worm-free if he’s in a little dry lot you never clean.

(The space issue is so interesting. I know some of you are going, OMG, who would put 15 horses on 5 acres? Â And those of you somewhere like L.A. are thinking, man, I wish I could find a place to board that had five acres and only 15 horses on it.)

A third issue is the horse himself, and there are two main considerations about how much space he may need, and what type of space. Â The first one is soundness. Â It’s not fair to an old coot with stiff legs to ask him to stand in a 12 x 12 box stall and be taken out once a day for a ride. He’s going to be stiff, sore and painful and I’m sorry but NO amount of Legend, Adequan, bute, BL pellets, glucosamine, MSM or anything else is going to compensate for the lack of movement. Â Your old guy needs to walk and move continuously, and on a reasonably flat area that doesn’t stress his legs. Â He needs to be kept out of mud or deep footing. Â A stall with an attached paddock is the ideal, or 24/7 turnout with shelter. Â The other kind of horse that absolutely has to have space is the young, energetic horse including young stock. Â Ask any vet and they’ll recite for you the problems that are caused by locking growing foals in stalls or small paddocks where they can’t run and play. Â A study at Utrecht University in the Netherlands found the following:

“Week-old Dutch warmblood foals were put into two groups: One living in box stalls for five months, and the other turned out 24 hours a day. After five months, some foals were euthanized and their fetlock joints examined. The results showed that confining foals significantly decreased calcium deposition, collagen development, and collagen cross-linking, which is critical to collagen strength. In comparison, pastured foals had normally developing subchondral bone.” Â (This is from The Horse)

Yeah, yeah, I know, I would think there’d be a way to do that without euthanizing foals, too, but the point is that babies need to move or you’re looking at soundness problems later. Â Locking a foal in a stall or a small paddock is a bad, bad idea and people do it all the time, reasoning that a foal is small, so for him, it’s not such a small area. Â He may be small, but his need to exercise is far greater than the adult horse that is three times his size.

The final question is whether or not you expect the horse to live off of pasture, at least in the summertime. Â There is no hard and fast rule of thumb about how many acres of pasture a horse needs. Â It depends on what your pasture is like. I used to have a five acre property in the midwest and had no problem keeping 5 Thoroughbreds positively hog-fat on it all summer – but it was an old alfalfa field and animals hadn’t ever been out on it when I bought it. Â If you let your horses graze everything down to the dirt and you never pick up poop or rest any part of the property and let it grow back or seed/fertilize, I can guarantee the nutritional value of whatever grass remains is about the same as snacking on cardboard. Â Horses can only live on grass where there is grass, and this means sufficient grass that it never gets grazed down to the ground. Â You either have to have a lot of acreage or separate your property into different pastures and rotate, letting the grass have a chance to grow back before you put horses out on it again. Â (By the way, the presence of high, untouched weeds or long coarse grasses that the horses didn’t touch does NOT mean there is still something left to eat out there…use a little common sense.)

A really great book if you have a small property and are trying to figure out how to configure it is Cherry Hill’s Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage. Â I’d check that one out for sure.

By the way, large acreages can present their own problems too! Â It becomes a lot harder to check horses daily for injuries, maintain fence, watch for the presence of animal holes or other hazards, etc. Â And of course it is much harder to secure from thieves. Â I know a lot of people with large properties who keep a smaller sacrifice area down by the barn, and use it as a catch pen. Â They call the horses down at least once a day and lock them in, usually with a bribe of a few handfuls of grain or some tasty hay that is even more appealing than the pasture. Â I’ve worked at a place where they ring a bell and everyone comes running – a huge convenience when it is time to ride and you don’t want to hike out over 100 acres looking for your mount, who may otherwise very well toss his head, laugh at you and head for the hills!

How much space do your horses have? Â What are the challenges you face in maintaining it? Â Have you had a property for a long time and had to learn what the “right,” manageable number of horses on it was — or are you trying to adjust to that number right now?

Guest blog from Ellen. We’ve talked about this stuff before but you can’t discuss it too much. We see theft stories every single day and often they are heartbreaking – a child’s horse, a pregnant mare, etc. Not to mention expensive equipment that may not be insured.

In a five mile circle of my front gate are fifty horses in thirty yards or pastures waiting to be stolen. A few Arabs, a cluster of stout grays, and any number of Oklahoma paints. Out here in the country, there aren’t any streetlights and more importantly, there aren’t any locks on the gates.

Think about it. You and I might take real care and interest in safely loading our horse. But our horse loaded without much regard for safety or comfort is in the trailer and the gate slammed shut in the proverbial sixty seconds. Would a serious thief cut the fence? Maybe, but he doesn’t have to because the gate is left unlocked.

I know a vet assistant two miles away who not only doesn’t lock her interior big pasture gates but never closes her gates to the road. Beyond the insurance nightmare of horses on the road, the personal nightmare of theft is being kept at bay by dumb luck. Can anyone say Schlage Lock. Not a combination, but the serious lock that has serious keys you can keep control over.

Wonder about feed supplements, tack, tools and tractors? Yup, they get stolen too. Of course, taking a picture, keeping sales receipts, and burning our identity under a saddle flap would help recovery. But why bother, it’s the other ranch that loses their stuff, right?

Even professionals get burned. A vendor with $200,000 worth of saddles, tack and custom gear waved good bye to everything after Tulsa’s Arab Nationals. The towing unit could have had lo-jack tracking and ignition cut off. The trailer could have had padlocks on the safety chains. But the thieves got the time to do their thing and even that extra moment to strip the radio out of the tow vehicle.

We can’t make theft go away. And frankly the fewer jobs to go around has something to do with crime going up. But we can make it hard for the thieves to make a dollar off a horseman.

Some very good points! I would particularly note that it is super easy to hook up a horse trailer within minutes and take off with it. If you go to work or church every week, the thieves in your neighborhood know. Put a hitch lock on your trailer and make it less of a target.

Another point – lights! Motion sensor lights do so much to discourage theft. There’s just a lot that you can do to make your property one of the least appealing targets in the neighborhood and that alone will often protect you.

REPUBLISHING this one from 5/11/09 by request, and because it’s always a good topic!

As I’ve posted before, I didn’t get a horse early into my riding career. I lived in the ‘burbs and my mother steadfastly declared that no way was she going to that smelly barn on a daily basis. So horse ownership had to wait until I had a driver’s license and as a result I was at least a mediocre owner, if not a good one, by the time I had something with four hooves to call my own. In the meantime, I took nine years of riding lessons. While my instructors were far from George Morris, I did acquire the basics and the ability to ride the “advanced” school horses – aka those given to frequent spooking, bolting, bucking and similar behaviors.

Â

Still, I made a lot of dumb first-time owner mistakes. My horse lived in a tie stall for quite some time, something I feel guilty about to this day. I am lucky that the barn had a good farrier, because I wouldn’t have known good from bad. I’d read every horse book on earth, so that was somewhat helpful. Still, it is probably a very good thing I’d grown up in a barn full of adults all too happy to screech things like “pick up that lead rope, he’s going to step on it!” at me when my teenage brain had wandered.

Â

Sadly, not all horses are fortunate and every day, horses get sold to rank beginners – people whose knowledge base is limited to having ridden a friend’s horse a few times or gone trail riding on vacation. They have a couple of acres, and their impression of a horse is that it is kind of like a big dog. It will mow the lawn and you can ride it. An amazing number of horses survive this kind of ownership, but the fact is, some do not. Few beginners understand how easy it is to kill a horse. I see these people on message boards daily, asking questions that make me want to march the streets campaigning for ownership licensing and a test. Sometimes it is too late and they are already posting about the loss of their horses. Â

Â

Since I know that a lot of beginners do read this blog, today we are going to talk about the mistakes that really can kill your horse. Those of you who aren’t beginners, please add to my list!

 Â

1. Turnout in a halter that will not break – i.e. nylon or rope. If any of you have a stack of Western Horseman magazines from the 1970s, I need a favor. Can you scan that ad showing the dead horse hung up on the fence? They don’t use that ad anymore – I’m sure some parent sued for their child’s emotional distress – but it’s a damn shame because it got the message across. I am still, in 2009, reading message board posts from someone who turned out in a nylon or rope halter and came back to find a horse hung up with a broken neck. Even a horse who ties very well may panic when his head gets trapped unexpectedly. This can happen when he’s scratching an itchy spot on a t-post or something like a piece of loose metal on the barn (of course, that shouldn’t be there either). Some horses will even catch a back foot in their halter as they scratch themselves, and you can imagine the injuries that result. The solution is simple – either turn out with no halter (this is always the safest and if you can’t catch your horse, you have something to work on, don’t you?) or turn out with a breakaway halter.

A related problem – tying too long. When your horse is tied, a loop of lead rope that hangs down to your horse’s knee or further is absolutely too long. If the horse paws and hangs himself up, you’re likely to see a panicky episode that will scare you to death and can very well result in a severe injury to both the horse and any human who tries to free him. Tie with no more than 2-3 feet of rope between the horse’s nose and the tie rail or ring, tie with a quick release knot, and make sure you pull on the lead and check it before you walk off to ensure that the horse can’t get a few more feet of slack free with the first tug. This is particularly important when tying to the side of the trailer at a trail ride or other event – I always see horses with so much slack in the lead that it scares me. Tie high and short and keep hay nets high and short as well – nothing at leg level. Not ever. Don’t even get me started on “staking out” – yeah, I know there are .0005% of the horses in the world that someone has trained to do this and they’re just fine, but most of the time, it is a train wreck waiting to happen. Don’t do it.

Â

2. Uncapped t-posts and other unsafe fencing. Your realtor is most likely NOT a horse expert. Every day, I see properties full of barbed wire and uncapped t-posts marketed as “turn-key horse farms.” While there’s a fairly easy and cheap fix – capping the posts and replacing the barbed wire with another form of fencing like electric rope or tape – beginners are often told “oh, it will be fine.” Look, I could publish gory pictures all day showing that it may not be fine. And while it’s true that horses hurt themselves on other kinds of fence, it’s simply not as common and the injuries are rarely as severe as the injuries from barbs that dig in and tear the flash. With regard to capping t-posts, I once almost lost a horse myself because I failed to do that. A horse who tries to jump out can impale himself on the top of an uncapped t-post, and a horse who is scratching may cut himself. Mine cut herself on the underside of her face, right between the cheekbones and right into her jugular vein. T-post caps are cheap and they slip right on. Go pick some up if you haven’t already.

Â

Â

3. Pasture obstacles. Horses are not, no matter what anybody tells you, “smart enough” to stay away from tractors, old cars, playground equipment, loose sheet metal, sinkholes and other pasture hazards. If there is a means of self-destruction in their turnout area, they are likely to find and use it. It is important to go out and physically walk your pastures looking for hazards before you ever put a horse out there. I’ve seen old farms where coils of old, rusty barbed wire hid in the weeds. A few years ago, there was a much-publicized case where a beautiful warmblood stallion fell into an old well on a property and broke his neck. You can read several cases on Netposse where the horse was found on the owner’s property stuck in a sinkhole or something similar. I’ve also seen cases where erosion has taken back the edge of a ditch to where the horse can fall in without ever getting outside of the fence. I’ve seen horses kill themselves on things like a rough piece of sheet metal coming off the back of a shed, a support cable for a telephone post, farm equipment that was parked in the pasture for just a day, and the list goes on. If you can’t immediately remove a hazard, shield it from the horses using a few corral panels. These are a quick way to build a barrier around something like an old well, a collapsed building, or some metal pipe to nowhere sticking up out of the ground.

Â

Â

Â

4. Grass can kill your horse. To make a long explanation short, the sunny and warm days of spring raise the sugar content of grass pasture. This can render grass dangerous to eat – the sugars upset the normal balance in the horse’s digestive tract, resulting in toxins which lead to founder, aka laminitis. Founder is without a doubt one of the worst things that can happen to your horse. In its most severe form, the hooves are so badly affected that the horse must be euthanized. Even in milder forms, it is a management issue and the horse may require a lengthy rehab period, expensive special shoeing, and to be “dry lotted” – kept in a dirt field with no grass – the rest of his life. The classic situation is a beginner who purchases a horse from a boarding barn where it has only gone out in dirt paddocks, brings it home to the idyllic farm they just purchased and puts it out on lush green pasture. The horse looks happy – heck, the horse looks ecstatic – but days later it can hardly walk and by the end of the week, it is dead. Rule number one: Horses do not know what is good for them. They can also founder after getting into the grain – your grain should be kept in a locked room or a spare stall where a loose horse at 3 AM cannot get to it. If you purchase a horse who hasn’t been out on grass, introduce him to it slowly. Start with 15 minutes of grazing and then back into the stall/dirt paddock he goes. Work up by increasing the time a little bit daily until the horse it out 24/7 if that’s what you desire. He won’t like coming back in – but you’ll save yourself a four-figure vet bill and a lot of heartbreak. Another option is a grazing muzzle, which allows the horse to be turned out with the herd and drink but keeps his grass consumption to a minimum. If you’ve purchased a previously foundered horse (your vet can tell you), fencing in a dirt paddock is probably your safest bet.

Â

FYI, grass clippings from the lawn are never safe for horses. They start to ferment almost immediately in a bag or pile. Hand-picking grass for your paddock kept horse is fine, but the leftover from the mower belongs in the trash heap.

Â

5. Other horses can kill your horse.  Some boarding barns are just not very smart about turnout. While a certain amount of roughhousing, nipping and the occasional kick is normal in a herd of horses, you will occasionally see a horse who is truly aggressive. He continually runs at other horses, ears pinned, teeth bared. He will start chasing another horse and it won’t end after three strides (that’s normal herd behavior – the chase ends when the submissive horse runs away) – he will chase that horse for laps around the pasture. This horse can kill your horse. This is how horses get so panicked that they do try to jump out of the fence. They can get cornered in a run-in shed or fence corner by a horse like this and kicked so severely they have to be euthanized. Absolutely do not allow your horse to be turned out with a horse like this, even if he does not seem to be the focus of the horse’s aggression. It’s much better that your horse go out in a small paddock by himself.

No, you don’t want to be the overprotective horse parent who has hysterics over a tiny nip mark, but if you’ve ever seen a truly aggressive horse like this in action, you know what I mean. You are the paying customer at a boarding barn, and you do have the right to demand your horse be kept as safe as possible – please don’t back down because someone scoffs at you and tries to make you feel like a stupid beginner. If you are going to make mistakes, erring on the side of caution is always best!

So, what else would you add to the discussion? What do you think are the most important things for first time owners to know – the things that absolutely CAN kill their horse if they don’t know them? I’m not talking about all of the fine points of tack fit – I’m talking about things that can result in life-threatening conditions.

Someone posted this story to the comments yesterday – a horrifying tale of a neighborhood dispute gone bad which has already resulted in one dead horse.

http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/56756132.html

This brings up a very good discussion. Recently, a longtime reader of this blog contacted me. She is in a very bad situation due to troublesome neighbors. For many years she has leased the same property with no problems. Then, the Bottom Feeders Next Door moved in – the neighbors we all dread. They abuse their horses, keep a rank stallion, and seem to have an inordinate number of angry pit bulls residing with them (you can figure that one out for yourselves).Â

The BFND don’t care for my reader, the sort of quiet, hardworking, law-abiding, middle aged, spoil-her-elderly-horses-rotten person that most of us would LOVE to have living next door. They have been pulling stuff like turning their stallion out along her fenceline to upset her horses and they have even verbally threatened to hurt her horses! She is freaked out, to say the least. The most she can get the authorities to do is “talk” to the neighbors. Well, I think we all know that’s a swift path to making things a lot worse. The landlord won’t permit her to construct more fences, and she is having trouble finding another rental that will permit six old coot horses and isn’t a zillion dollars a month. For now, she is keeping her horses in the barn, but with a COPD horse, that is no solution.Â

So let me ask you this question today: Who has been there? What did you do? Did you give up and just move? (I’d be most tempted to do that, but I agree that finding a great horsey rental can be challenging – been there several times). Did you get a guard dog? Was there something you were able to say to the police that got some action taken that actually resolved the situation? What do you do as a single woman when nut cases move in next door and threaten to hurt your animals? I’m not saying that to be sexist, but it’s just a fact of life that people are less likely to threaten you when you have a big husband who could kick their butts. Any advice for my reader?Â

And FYI, if someone has a place to live with horse facilities for rent in Western Oregon, send me an e-mail and let’s see if we can get my reader and her horses to safety.
