What else can I title this post? It’s so rare that everything works out exactly the way it is supposed to with an equine abuse case. The bad guy winds up in jail. The horse not only survives and makes his way to safety, but even returns to his previous level of glory in the show ring. The good guy (or in this case, girl) who fought to save the horse gets to live happily ever after. It doesn’t happen often, but it happened here.
My original blog about the saga of Capone I:
To make a long story short, our heroine, Corinne Super, had the good common sense to get the poor horse out of Doug’s little farm of horrors in 2008. She successfully kept him out of Pervy McPervert’s hands until sometime in 2009, when, apparently, Doug managed to get him back. When Doug got arrested again in 2010, the horse got to return to Corinne’s and now he is back out there winning Grand Prix jumping. From the Chronicle of the Horse:
From the article: Super’s first concern when Capone arrived back to her Langley, B.C., farm was his health. “He was in horrific condition when we picked him up. He was dehydrated and underweight and wormy. His feet hadn’t been done,†she said.
It just goes to show that the nicest horse, like the nicest person, is still at risk of winding up the victim of a crazy person. Doug Spink is about as valueless a human being as I can imagine. Everyone knew he shouldn’t have ANY horses in his possession – just read the Internet postings from this freak show. Yet there was no law in place to prevent him from owning horses, and if his equally twisted “customer” hadn’t messed up and gotten caught (see the story about the Gelding Bus above), Spink would STILL be doing whatever he was doing (which wasn’t feeding or trimming) with this magnificent animal.
That horse is safe and back in the show ring today for one reason: Someone loved him and didn’t give up, despite more drama than most of us will ever have to deal with. I’m sure it has been a phenomenally expensive and stressful fight for Corinne, and she deserves a lot of credit for not giving up. What a wonderful comeback and a great happy ending story…thought you would all enjoy this to start your week!
I don’t have much to say to this except that the one hard, fast, no-exceptions rule every woman should have about men is that at the first sign of violent behavior, we are out the door – cold turkey. New phone number, new place to live and new job if necessary. I very much doubt this was the first show of temper the husband had ever displayed. Those poor horses
If you think it won’t escalate, it will. If you think you can control him, you can’t. If you think you can predict him, you’re wrong. Don’t be the woman in the article – or worse. Get out now, no matter how difficult it may be – and get your kids and pets out, too.
If you have a spare minute, please vote for me in the Equestrian Social Media Awards. Today is your last day to vote. Just click below – I’m nominated in categories 3 and 12!
For the pony lovers…Shiloh Horse Rescue in Nevada has a super cute Morab pony looking for a home. She is green but not stupid and I just think she’s ADORABLE!
Oh lord…I’m not on EITHER side here. I think Sally has got Chri$ty by the short hairs but I also think Sally is nuttier than a fruitcake. If animal control took your animals away because Chri$ty didn’t like you, shit, I wouldn’t have a pet or a horse to my name. Everytime someone starts off with the conspiracy theories and the paranoia, I roll my eyes…BUT if you can stand to wade through the sea o’ crazy here, there is some very interesting new information about AC4H and VFH contained within. I totally believe the theory that AC4H has been bailing horses, shipping them to VFH and VFH has been, ooopsy, letting them go back to the kill buyer in Ohio. The horses keep shuttling through, the cash flows, nobody ever has to support the hayburners forever and Chri$ty and Diana laugh all the way to the bank.
I can’t believe nobody grabbed her yet, so here you go…still at Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue, and too far away for me to adopt despite the fact she fits my profile of what I love…red chestnut TB mare!
From the article: “State police at Greensburg are seeking information about the shooting, which occurred between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursday at the farm off Route 981, just south of the village of Pleasant Unity.”
Please spread the word about this story if you know anyone in that area. The last shootings were done by teenagers and teenagers are the world’s dumbest criminals. If this too was the work of teens, they have bragged about it to someone.
I really can’t imagine anything worse. Your horse is on your property, and you think they’re safe, and someone not only trespasses on your property, but they kill your pet. And in this case, they kill your six year old’s pet. And you come home with your child and that is what you find. A dead pony in your pasture. The cruelty to the pony is bad enough, but how the hell do you do that to a little kid a week before Christmas??? You just ruined Christmas for the kid for the rest of her life. Are you proud of yourself?
I want whoever did this to get caught and spend Christmas in jail. Sorry for the downer of a post, but this little girl deserves to see that while bad things happen, bad people do get punished. I hope we luck out and someone here knows something, or can network this blog entry to their Pennsylvania friends and relatives and eventually we can get a tip that matters.
All right, here’s your brain bleach after that story…Zenyatta enjoying her retirement. What a beautiful mare. I know they want to breed her for racing but I would love to see one foal by a really fantastic warmblood, wouldn’t you? I also want to compliment her trainer/handlers…this is a nice mare with manners who has clearly been treated very kindly and loves people. I hope she lives to be forty!
There is nothing more appealing to kids than horses. Few little girls don’t go through the horsey phase and, most of the time, the horsey phase involves no worse result than growing into a horse poor adult with a constant, vague smell of manure floating around them.
Unfortunately, every once in a while some sicko realizes that the horse biz is a great place to have unrestricted access to tons of unsupervised children and teenagers. And then you have a situation like this:
I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and guess that I wouldn’t like his horse training methods if I saw him, either. Any of you Wisconsinites familiar with the pervert? I’d love to hear more of the story here.
Of course it brings up a much larger issue – how trusting should you be of the horse professionals you leave your child with? It’s true that sexual predators, like con artists, can fool the best of us, but I’m surprised when parents are blindly trusting. Don’t drop your kids off – stay for lessons and learn a little more about the people at the barn. Check out state court records to make sure no one has a history of violent behavior or sexual misconduct — often they are online and free! Google, for heaven’s sake – sure, there are untrue things on the Internet and you have to take it all with a grain of salt, but ten different bad experiences probably point to a problem.
What do you think? How much “due diligence” is appropriate before you leave your kid at a riding stable or horse camp?
If you’re Christmas shopping for a new friend, check out Jupiter at Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue. What a beautiful face and a kind eye!
