Don’t judge a book by its web site!

People are always asking me how they can choose a reputable rescue to donate to and are sometimes not happy with the answer I provide: Choose a GFAS accredited rescue (of which there are only a handful) or choose a rescue near your home that you can visit and check up on regularly. (A great way of visiting and checking up is known as “volunteering” :) )

Well, folks aren’t always satisfied with that answer. They see pleas for help online constantly, and would like to believe that a nice web site is proof that a rescue is well-run and well-organized.
Look at the nice web site!

And here is her blog. Totally intelligent, coherent, sensible. Who wouldn’t agree with what she has to say?

I mean, Kristin Chambers can spell and everything. She sounds totally together. OK, she IS a Parellisite, but there are many of those who take good care of their horses (many of them find it is the only thing they can do with their horses, who have learned how to avoid ever being ridden!)

Heck, Kristin has even been mentioned positively here on the blog. She’s the one who found Clever Allemont in the kill pen and helped him get to safety.

But yet…she slipped over the edge, as so many do, and is now up on animal cruelty (and child abuse) charges. And the only red flag online was the lack of updates. The blog stopped updating four months ago. The web site is mostly out of date for the past year.

What is interesting is that I cannot find a single mention of this in the national news.  I found one tiny little blip in the local news. Fortunately for those of you looking to avoid funding hoarders, this blog is the news!

As per usual, Kristin’s hoarding was funded by many grants from the ABR board. People, again, can you just wise up? Local rescues. Or rescues with GFAS accreditation. That is where you send your money. Not to every “OMG THE TRUCK IS COMING!” screamer on the web.

P.S. Speaking of rescues biting the proverbial dust, yes, I have received Celeita Kramer’s “help me or I start shooting horses” e-mail from many of you. Honestly I am sick of giving that crazy-ass nut job any further publicity. If you don’t know who I am talking about, read this excellent blog entry detailing some of her issues here. I will feature Celeita again when she (a) gets arrested or (b) agrees to surrender ALL horses and get OUT of rescue. Not before.

Updates: Catherine Petersen and the reason I slept outdoors the last three nights

You may remember the tale of Catherine Petersen, one of the worst of the Alex Brown Forum scammers. For those of you who don’t know, the ABR Forum is an anti-slaughter, pro-rescue message board that, unfortunately, has quite a history of clicking the paypal button with their hearts instead of their heads. Sometimes they do wonderful things but unfortunately they have frequently been taken advantage of, and Catherine Petersen was one of the worst scammers who victimized that board, going so far as to collect funds for a few dozen horses she proceeded not to even rescue! Catherine is a special kind of lowlife, and so I’m pleased to share this update from a reader:

” I talked to Nancy (Wes’s secretary, attorney who pressed charges) today and Catherine was sentenced to 10 years (1 year served) with NO PROBATION! She will be eligible for parole in 2 or 3 years, I will write a letter to the parole board as I did to the court when the time comes. She will be transported to state prison shortly. I am so relieved that she will be off the streets for awhile. I want to thank you again for keeping her name out there. Wes contacted the prosecutor in Cody, WY and they have their warrants ready to extradite her when she is released. There is a God!”

What a great outcome. Of course it will not put the cash back in the pockets of those who were lied to and scammed, but at least people and horses will be safe from her for a couple of years. These charity scammers get on my last nerve. Not only do they steal funds that COULD be saving horses’ lives, but they are manipulating peoples’ emotions and the worst part is, someone who sends money to save a horse may learn that it was all for nothing.

Now for another update. I’m not kidding, I slept outside the past three nights at a horseshow because this story made me realize showgrounds aren’t safe and no way is some bottom-feeder touching MY horse unless he gets past me first. For those of you who aren’t already familiar with it, here is the original post about what happened to Dually:
Do our horses need bodyguards these days?

And she hadn’t even left the fairgrounds! She was in the horse trailer on the property. It’s every horse owner’s worst nightmare.
Well, the evil bastard, Flint Dahl, pled out. Of course he did. News Article (the comments at the bottom are worth reading) and another news article. He’s due back in court on May 26th. I just tried to find some contact information for Magistrate Judge Mark Smith and a case number so that we could make some sentencing suggestions, but no luck on that. If you find the info, post it to the comments and I’ll update!

The Dually story is a good reminder to all of us that you can’t be too careful, not just with your horses but with your equipment, too. The show I was at this weekend had flyers posted warning everybody that there had been thefts from the show grounds. Of course, a show is a perfect place to steal! People get busy and simply do not keep their expensive tack locked up all the time. It is easy for someone who is juggling a busy class list and multiple horses to become a victim. Have you had a problem with your tack walking off at shows? Do you have any tips for others about how to make yourself and your equipment a less appealing target for thieves? I have heard a LOT of stories lately about trailers walking off from private horse properties while the owners are at work.

Finally, please check this out and keep an eye out for this horse!

Some, er, LOTS of things never change!

As the old saying goes, a leopard does not change its spots.  We see this all the time in the horse world.  People who neglect horses don’t typically reform their evil ways.  They just swerve punishment for them however they can, usually by moving to a new place, or just laying low for a while, and then they return to doing the same old crap that got them featured on the Fugly blog and/or prosecuted the first time.

You have probably already guessed that this post contains an update on Dean Solomon.  Yes, Dean simply cannot stay out of trouble with Animal Control. New cruelty charges were filed against her and accomplice Nancy Pacey in January.  I wonder if they’ve caught Nancy yet — she failed to appear and they had to put a warrant out for her!  You can download the details here.   I know some of you locals think A.C. has been asleep at the switch when it comes to Dean, but really, they’ve been watching her this whole time and her refusal to obey the order that does not allow her to own horses has been duly noted.  Pats on the back to KCAC!

Now, remember the moron who was trying to argue she had a tobiano purebred Arabian?  She didn’t, BTW.   She has often come up in the comments as a classic example of virtually everything we hate about BYB’ers — the horses are low quality, it’s all about color, not a one of them has accomplished anything more complicated than pooping and walking at the same time, and now for the final but not surprising nail in the coffin, I have proof they’re living in crappy conditions and she won’t pay her bills.  Yes, Shatormar ArabiansTory Morgan has shown herself to be the epitome of a piece of shit backyard breeder — not only is she not paying board to the 80+ year old man currently housing her 30+ neglected horses on his property, but the bee-yotch owes him for three grand of hay as well!   Poor old guy does not know how to get rid of her and everybody feels sorry for the horses.

Tory’s got 34 head of horses out there, plus a dozen or so foals on the ground, and every mare is bred back. There are studs just running loose with the mares, eight foals in a 40×40 paddock and eight 2/3-year-olds in a 20×30, and the six or so yearlings in a part of the dairy barn that is about 8×30 .Of course, Tory, like all pieces of shit like her, knew exactly where to locate her Pinto Puppymill — in a county that doesn’t have an Animal Control.   And – are you ready for it? – Guess how Miss Tory supports herself?  Wait for it – YES, she is on DISABILITY! Your tax dollars at work, funding her pinto puppymill!  I don’t know WTF is supposed to be wrong with her, since I’m fairly sure Irresponsible and Lazy aren’t disabilities (yet) but what a crock of crap.

From the person who reported her:  ”The turd of a woman has No Trespassing, No Pictures, No Video posted EVERYWHERE. NO WATER ANYWHERE!!!!”  Yeah.  How’d that no pictures and no video thing work for you, Tory?  NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU SAY.  Since I know legal threats are forthcoming, may I suggest you pay up your board and hay bill before attempting to retain an attorney?   They aren’t as easy to avoid paying as the senior citizen that you are victimizing.

I just can’t get over the classy facilities. It’s like an obstacle course for those poor horses – a dairy barn full of old equipment, ladders on the ground, barbed wire, etc.  And her web site says they hope to be moving to a new farm in 2010.  I hope they think about paying the poor old man they’ve been scamming, but I won’t hold my breath!  By the way, Tory, love the browband in your stallion’s eyes.  It’s amazing how you’re healthy enough to ride, reproduce and breed horses yet somehow unable to work.  What, do you have an allergy to gainful employment?

Yes, this is being reported and yes, I will let you know what happens!

All right, moving on…while we’re talking about wastes of oxygen, you may remember one of the worst scammers to ever suck money out of the ABR board, Catherine Petersen.  My original blog on here is here:  http://www.fuglyblog.com/2008/im-afraid-to-call-myself-a-rescuer-anymore/.  I just got an update that she goes to trial in June. She is still in jail in Kentucky so the horse world is safe (for now).   Sounds like she may plead her way down to 3-5 years of prison but the good news is that there are warrants out for her in four other states, so her legal troubles are far from over.

I don’t believe I’ve discussed her on the blog before, but Terry Lynn Sullivan from Staunton, Virginia is a repeat offender in real life…this woman is just a nightmare.  Here is a recent news story on Terry:  http://www.nbc29.com/Global/story.asp?S=11979006.  Another:  http://www2.newsvirginian.com/wnv/news/local/staunton/article/horses_recuperating/52338/

From the story, “Officers seized 19 Sullivan horses back in 1996, leading to her first conviction of animal cruelty. Another of her horses was found dead in April 2008. That summer she was again convicted, An Augusta County judge barred Terry Lynn Sullivan from owning horses for two years. Her attorney appealed that ruling, and now awaits a decision from a higher court.”  OK, folks, HERE IS HER PICTURE.  STOP GIVING HER HORSES!!!  She is getting them from somewhere.  STOP!  Terry uses the business name Shaner Lane Farm.  She also had (OF COURSE!) a “rescue” called the Fern Leigh Equine Foundation.  I’ve said it before but I need to say it again:  a 501(c)3 is not any kind of proof that you are a decent animal caretaker. None at all. It only means you are good at paperwork or hired someone who is.   Read this description of Sullivan letting a mare lay in her field and die and then claim it would not get up because it was “stubborn.”  That poor Brigette Berbes woman has been knocking herself out for years trying to put this bitch in a cell.  I’ll bet somewhere on the Internet, some asshat is talking about how Brigette is a meanie and is harassing poor old Terry.   Brigette, the Fugly blog would like to give you a medal!  Thank you for your persistence, heaven knows these horses would be dead without it.

Oh, and approximately three people a week e-mail me in horror about the Bedonna chick.  I know, I know.  She has twelve stallions at stud.  Some are nice – I sure wouldn’t kick Our Cash Policy out of the barn – but some are not – Go To Moons has got to have one of the ugliest necks I have ever seen on a QH stallion.   She’s expecting approximately one kajillion 2010 foals.

She isn’t going to stop breeding.  She’s been doing this forever.  She was on the blog in October 2007 – she was the dimwit who had to immediately sell 130 horses due to being pregnant.  WTF?  She’s like that person who keeps driving drunk, again and again — she just doesn’t care how her actions affect others.  The only big picture she understands is the velvet Elvis hanging over the couch.  The concept of responsible breeding and reducing the supply so that the demand will perk up is as baffling as quantum physics to her.  She doesn’t get it and never will.  She only cares that you pay her, or she’ll out you for that on her web site.  Well, Bedonna, I’m outing you for breeding way too damn many mostly unspectacular Quarter Horses on my web site…yet again.

Now, as to the Alexis Ingraham story (certainly a case of things that don’t change since the stories go back ten years with her!) – NickerNews is updating and covering it comprehensively, so head on over there to see what is going on and get a lot more information.  They are doing a great job with their coverage of this.  I doubt the authorities are going to be able to let this one slide!  Also check out their other thread about the Searsport horses and particularly the comment of Kathy Carpenter, who explains EXACTLY how to get the attention of your legislators (and she is dead on-target with her advice).  You also must read the complaint submitted to animal control on Alexis’ farm – extremely well written and horrifying account.  The story about the foal that was down is truly disturbing…it even was for me and I’m pretty jaded by now.  Alexis MUST be stopped and MUST be banned from owning horses.  If you’re in Maine, please do not give up until this happens.  She’s your Dean Solomon, and she won’t stop until law enforcement makes her stop.

A Fugly Parable

Once upon a time, there was a very bad priest horse rescuer.  He She molested children starved and neglected horses, and had been doing that for a long time.  The victims were afraid unable to speak up and ask for help.

Sometimes, someone with a voice would figure out what was going on, and try to speak up.  Finally they even got pictures. Lots of pictures.  Proof positive.  They were told to be quiet.  They were told that this was all being handled internally, and it would be taken care of.  Some were told that it was a confidential matter, and they could not speak out or there would be consequences.  But mostly they were told that speaking the truth was a bad idea because it would make the entire religion horse rescue community look bad.  And that would lead to lost donations and bad press and hurt innocent people and probably bring on the Apocalypse.

They were told that Catholics horse rescuers should stick together, not demand that the bad priest horse rescuer be brought to justice.  And so it came to pass that the situation with the bad priest horse rescuer was hushed up and no charges were brought and the victims were paid off euthanized quietly and the media never got the whole story, nor did any of the parishioners donors. Free of a criminal record, the bad priest rescuer moved to a new state, and continued molesting children starving and neglecting horses.

And no one lived happily ever after, but HEY! we didn’t make our religion horse rescue look bad.

Oh, hell YES, you did.

Consider it a blind item.  We’ll see who does the right thing here…or not.  I’ll give ‘em a chance before I reveal who this is about.  I just hope it’s food for thought for those who say rescues shouldn’t bad mouth other rescues.  When horses are starving, HELL YES they should!  It doesn’t make us “gossippy” or “backbiting” or any one of a thousand epithets to report the truth and make sure the law is enforced, no matter who is in violation of it or who they know or how much they cry or how many excuses they have.

Three Strikes Ranch update

Most of you will remember the Three Strikes Ranch case, which I ended up going out to help hands-on with:

My original blog on the topic.

I didn’t realize it, but Jason Meduna’s trial is currently taking place.

http://rtfitch.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/witnesses-meduna-had-help-ignored-conditions/

Let’s hope they throw every book they have at him!  And I hope the incident will continue to serve as a warning for what can happen when well-meaning people believe they are going to have a sanctuary where mustangs live “as nature intended.” Nature doesn’t buy hay or pay vet bills, and when you have eighty dead horses between YOUR fences, it is just as prosecutable if they are mustangs or Thoroughbreds.

Try having a sanctuary with FIVE horses first, and see if you can handle that for a year…why doesn’t anyone ever do that???
