The OSU Update: I get a PONY!

Well, not to keep but I will be putting some riding on her! Thanks to Falcon Ridge Equine Rescue for saving her and Strawberry Mountain Mustangs for picking her up and quarantining her. She is sweet, willing and has nice manners, but check out the feet she came with. This is from a university that has a farrier school on the grounds. WTF? (My original blog here if you missed it!)

Anyway, little spotty princess needs a name so I want to hear your ideas! She needs a registered name too, as I’ll be getting her Pinto papers. So tell me what you think her registered name should be and also her barn name, and Nicki and I will pick some fun ones out of your suggestions! UNLESS of course, you are the one who donated her and you have her papers, which would make me VERY happy. I’m sure she’s got them somewhere!

Now, as to our mystery horse thread…I want some updates. Did you guys find Ice Man? Are you getting him back? Any more mysteries solved? Again, the Mystery Horse Thread is permanently linked in the rest of the links on the right hand side, so feel free to keep using it.

    Registered Name: Gypsum Sunrise
    Barn Name: Gypsy

The Gypsum Hills are a not well known but BEAUTIFUL part of Kansas. It’s breath-taking. Every morning you see the sunrise coming up over the hills, it’s just so pure & beautiful. I’ve always wanted to name a horse that, I just don’t have a mare, nor do I think I will ever be getting a mare.

    Ooooooooo she’s cute!
And my vote is for a name that plays off of the fact that she was rescued, but not super obviously.

Maybe something like Second Time Around?

Then you could call her Minute XD.
She actually doesn’t strike me as a Minute, though I have met a horse with that name :p

I always thought having a show name of “In the Nude” would be good for a sale horse. Everyone would come to see the naked person ride, and that means more people looking at the pony. LOL
“Next in the ring, ______ riding in the nude!” :D
Then you can give her a human barn name. She looks like an Emily to me.

Otherwise a cool show name could be “Earned My Spots”. I think that fits pretty well. Emily “goes” with that too.

I hope she does well in training and finds a great forever-home! She looks so sweet. :)

Hahaha!! I have a yearling colt named Thee Full Amante SA. Barn name – Monty. I SO can’t wait to show him simply because I really want to see if the class announcers can keep a straight face and not chuckle when they say it.
But…oooo….In The Nude….I just might have to see if that one will fly with the registry. THAT would be priceless!!!

I have a friend with a tasteless sense of humor who named his jumper “The Short Bus.” So it would be, “So and so riding the short bus…”

Our trainer vetoed the idea when it came time to an actual show, though!

I suck at names, but she is utterly adorable.

Farrier school? I’d forgive it more if it looked like a student had, ahem, practiced on her. But it looks more like she was turned out on stones and not taken care of.

Diminished Responsibility (Minnie as a barn name)

I picked it because I’m about 90% certain this is what most of the people who are showcased on this blog would use as their defence in court. “‘ya see yer honour I’ve got whatcha’ call shit fer brains, so obviously I couldn’t know horses needed to be fed to survive!”

Some sort of strange tribute to the blog?

I’d call her Lucky Lady. I really liked the bay Arabian, she was cute. Hope she found a good home. And they were all spayed! I could go for that. Congrats on your new pony. Of course, the non-white parts are red!

Wonder if we will see any of the mares on Craigslist as Broodies! Do they tatoo a mark on the belly like they do the dogs and cats when they’re fixed?

Dear Wnnahrse, I really hope i don´t get on your bad side… but is it really necessary to choose a name with that historical background?

RF- I am guessing you aren’t familiar with today’s modern military, many countries use flecktarn in their fatigues.
I didn’t go to the historical meaning in german history as you did but the literal meaning…

German: “spotted camouflage”; also known as Flecktarnmuster, Fleckentarn or simply Fleck) is a 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-colour disruptive camouflage pattern. The use of spots creates a “dithering” effect, which eliminates hard boundaries between the different colours in much the same way the squares in the newest digital camouflage patterns do.

“spotted camouflage”; use of spots creates a “dithering” effect -the literal meaning…

She reminds me of my “Sissy” mare (APHA Sassy’s Sissy), who was born the day the Challenger blew up. Sissy’s mother rejected her and Sissy was bottle-fed. Very sweet little lap horse. I sold her to a family who promptly left the area without finishing paying for her. And the dad was a California Highway Patrol officer to boot!

I still have her papers though, and no doubt she’s long gone.

I sure do <3 those spots and I'm glad one of those paint/pinto mares landed in a good place!

This really sounds to me like OSU is a joke of a school. Has anyone checked the water up there lately, cause it sure sounds like SOMEONE has to be drinking funny water! You are joking, right?
Ponies are the same as horses. Heels on and give with your hands, and up comes the head. If they get persistent give them rein and a sharp tap on the backside and a growl at them.
I have this all the time, driving.
I teach my horses they do not graze with their bit in, I always have, but when they are right out there on the end of the shafts, sooner or later they are going to have a go!
Quick tap with the whip (that is what you have it for) and a sharp “Uh UH!!” and we are away again.
            It is not rocket science…..

Of course I’m not going to let her, but exactly as you just described, it has been known to strengthen one’s midsection to keep your upper body in a position where they can’t snatch their head down in the first place. That was the point. Ponies do seem more likely than horses to try…they do love food and this girl is no exception from what I am hearing!

You are making my college choices very difficult! I don’t really want to go there so much anymore… which is such a shame, they have a nice equestrian center….

Anybody have any ideas for applications? Any other horsey schools? Davis is still number one. OSU was my #2 (Corvallis) but now not as much…
Just any ideas that I should look into? They MUST have pasture boarding. I have a rescue who was abandoned in a box stall for 6 months, and cannot handle being left inside. OSU was one that I thought he would do okay with, because the stalls are very large and open and they are only in during the night. I was very happy with the setup they had there for the horses when I checked it out this summer.

Any ideas? Also, does anybody know if colleges will let me use him for an equestrian team? He is now a 7 year old TB, and my trainer has just started working us over jumps (I have been riding for 9 or so years, I am NOT a first time jumper)
I really dont want him to be just a pasture horse, and I would love to take him with me. Any ideas? we are from CA, so we are used to warmish weather haha. I have a lot of colleges in mind, but I just wanted to hear if anybody had anything to say!

A childhood friend of mine who went to Stephens (and whose parents both taught there so that is how we met) told me conditions had vastly improved since then (circa 1980-1985 as I recall). There was supposed to have been some major dorm renovations and remodeling of academic buildings.
When did you go there? I have not been there since the 1980′s myself so am only able to go off of what my friend has told me. Ah…but those summers at Stephens Lake and conning students into letting me ride :) I miss those days.

Actually, you are mistaken regarding the farrier school. It is my understanding that the school is no longer there at OSU. It never was a part of OSU in the first place – I think it was ran by Lynn or Benton County Community College. They just held classes in some of the rooms off the indoor arena and used the OSU horses as their practical experience partners.

I went to OSU in the ’90s. Decent farriers in the area were not completely impossible to come by but the students with horses at the Horse Center did not use the students for their private farriers. (Bringing in outside farriers was not an issue.) At that time, the horse professor had a band of pony mares of his own that he taught with plus a small band of QH mares (owned by OSU) that he used in the horse production classes. The rest of the horses were used in the college riding classes, for the different riding teams and in a successful youth riding class program. Almost 100% of these horses were donated from various situations and were NOT from the production classes. (Those who took the marketing and young horse training classes generally had their own private horse or leased team horse, full course loads and were not really interested in working with a “trained by committee” POS QH after they got their grade. I know *I* wasn’t!)

Since I graduated, at last five different HC directors have come and gone. The person in charge generally puts their stamp on the program with what they find important and all the changes could not have been great on the program. The focus of the horses and riding disciplines went from dressage/hunter to western to who knows what, et cetra. I’m sure the classes offered are different from what I took and I heard that the kids riding program went down the toilet too. I do know that a couple of years (2?) ago, I saw an add in Flying Changes for QH/Warmblood or Warmblood crosses out of OSU mares and (donated?) semen for sale. These horses were significantly better quality animals and had been prepped and gone through the ISR/Oldenburg kuering processes.

I’m really hoping that the QH stallion that was there during my time was given a bit better life. His job in life was to eat, sleep, be turned out a little and be collected for the production class. I know he was broke but no one rode or worked him so he had no real job or energy outlet. He was periodically nasty. Since it wasn’t all the time, it was kind like that “rumor” that came to reality – he bit one of the girls working/living on the property on the shoulder and got her on the ground. And his body certainly didn’t have anything wonderful about it that it needed to be passed on either.

Of course, the pony stallion’s nick name was “Chester the Molester”… He’d run up to the poor collecting mare from three strides away, on his hind legs….

    • MorganMegan says:

You are correct, the farrier school partnership went out the door with the last set of horse center management. The old QH stallion passed – he was never used for much else. The Oldenburg approved foals were from the vet school’s breeding program, not associated with the horse center – but that program got the ax too for lack of funds. I still can’t figure out which department dumped these mares…they were not a part of the horse center’s or vet school’s “on-location” herds for at least the last 5 years, but I suspect the vet school is more likely because of the topic of research that was done on them.

It’s not at all cute, but I think I’d be a literalist: “OSU Dumped Me,” or “Don’t Give Horses to OSU,” or maybe, “Ask Me About OSU’s Farrier School,” or “OSU Castoff,” or “OSU Auction Refugee.”

That way every time she wins, the jerks who neglected her feet and dumped her get shamed.

It’s commonly used to identify horses when you have a big group and can’t possibly be expected to remember and use, like, their names. We did use them at 3 strikes because there were so many. They put them on broodmares a lot, on big breeding farms. I will say this, they’re safer in the field than halters because they do break.

And all of OSU’s research horses are required to wear them for positive identification so new student workers don’t mix them up in research records.

I rarely comment, but what the hell. Naming threads are always fun.

Chinacat Sunrise – ‘China’ or ‘China-Cat’, in remembrance of the world’s most snuggly calico cat. The original China had patches over her shoulder much like this mare’s, too.
Molly on the Shore – ‘Molly’. Simply because a mare with such an honest expression requires an honest name.
Serendipity – ‘Seren’. Her rescue was exactly that, a serendipitous happenstance.
Fame and Fortune – ‘Fame’. Fortune for her good fortune in being rescued, fame for the notoriety she’s received on this blog.
Starry Night – ‘Night’. Named after the Don McLean song of the same name. ‘With eyes that know the darkness in my soul…’ Fitting for a mare who’s been so carelessly tossed aside.
Absinthe – ‘Abby’ or ‘Abs’. No particular reasoning here, just a word that came to mind while staring at her picture.

Did you know “Too Cool For School” is a song by the band Fountains of Wayne? It was featured in the movie “Scary Movie”, lol. Maybe a barn name of Kool Kat?
    here are the lyrics…..
He walks alone under the big city lights
He always knows just when the time is right
He never shows what he’s thinking he keeps it inside
Because he’s too cool for school
He comes alive oh, when the sun goes down
He gets it right you know he’s always down
He keeps one eye open and his ear to the ground
And he’s too cool for school

    He’s an operator
    he’s a real player
And if you mess with him
    You know you’ll never win
    He’s an instigator
    Enemy eliminator
And when he knocks you better
    You better let him in

He’s got his own way of getting things done
He’s always looking out for number one
Don’t try to beat him cause he’s already won
And he’s too cool for school

    He’s an operator
    he’s a real player
And if you mess with him
    You know you’ll never win
    He’s an instigator
    Enemy eliminator
And when he knocks you better
    You better let him in

He walks alone under the big city lights
He always knows just when the time is right
He never shows what he’s thinking he keeps it inside
Because he’s too cool for school
Because he’s too cool for school
Because he’s too cool for school

OT: What do you think about these websites?

    http://jackiekeithsoldmeahorse.blogspot.com/
    http://www.horsetradertricks.com/index.html

They’re blogs that tell horror stories about newbies buying horses from traders. While I can certainly understand being upset about being sold a “lemon” horse, I still think it’s 90% the fault of the buyers for not preparing for horse ownership.

The Jackie Keith blog is about a lady who went to look at one of Jackie Keith’s horses, felt bad for it, and bought it. It turns out the horse wasn’t as gentle as he said it was, and now she’s bitching about it on craigslist every day. Everyone in the horse world in this area knows who he is… I knew about him before I had ever been to a horse auction. He buys from Round Mountain and occasionally Seguin, resells the good horses, and ships the bad ones to Mexico.

The Horse Trader Tricks website has a bunch of stories about people who bought horses from “horse traders” who “ripped them off.” One of the stories was about a lady who bought a horse for her grandkids (Craigslist Wars). They “rode him a few times for short periods, then they got really busy playing ball and he wasn’t ridden for a while. On September 1, six weeks after they’d brought Tony to their home, Rachel and John decided to saddle up and go for a ride… “As soon as John got in the saddle,” Rachel described, “Tony humped up, and when John went to turn him, Tony went ballistic, full rodeo style with his head down between his front legs and all four feet off the ground. After six or seven big bucks, John came off and hit an old metal gate laying against the barn.” Then the mean horse traders wouldn’t take the horse back, even though they had only bought the horse not even2 months before.

Another lady featured on that site (Molly’s First Horse) bought a 3 year old horse even though her “riding experience consisted of “loving to gallop as a teen” and a handful of rental horse fixes as an adult.” Imagine her surprise when “He would start trotting and because Molly wasn’t a very experienced rider, she fell off several times on the trail and took some pretty hard bumps.”

I just don’t understand how people can be so ignorant about something that they spend thousands of dollars on that they’re trusting their lives or their kids’ lives with. When I was looking at trucks, I saw one on the internet that looked really nice. The guy was asking $3,400 for it. I went to look at it, and it wasn’t nearly as nice as it was in the pictures. The bed was rusted through, the driver’s side door knob was missing, it had 65,000 more miles on it than he told me it did over the phone, and there were a couple of other things wrong with it that I couldn’t remember. I figured I’d still at least test drive it while I was there, so I told the guy I was interested in it and asked if I could drive it. He said no because it was raining. I asked if I could come back and test drive it when the rain stopped. He said no, because his insurance wouldn’t cover me.

I would have been an idiot to buy that truck. I wouldn’t buy a truck without test driving it or without having my mechanic look at it, so why do novice horse people think it’s ok to buy a horse just because the salesman said it’s a good horse? Of course they’re going to say it’s good, it’s their job to say it’s good so they can sell it and make money off of you. That’s why you get the help of a professional if you don’t know what the hell you’re doing.

No kidding. It's like the Guns & White Roses people. I would have more sympathy if you hadn't bought a horse you had to take out a loan to buy WITHOUT SPENDING $500 or LESS FOR A PLANE TICKET.

I've bought stuff I haven't seen but it was $500 or less out of a kill pen and I had no expectations other than: kill pen horse, anything could be wrong with it.

Basically, they took out a loan to buy a very expensive reining prospect and she showed up with a swayback like you would not believe. I felt sorry for them BUT I really thought they should have flown out to see her before spending that much money.

Apparently, despite all the dramz, and let me tell you these people were having the Internet Shit Fit Heard Round The World, the filly turned out to be totally rideable and is now competing. Oh well, all’s well that ends well, I guess!

I agree, it is the responsibility of the buyers to educate themselves and be careful about what they buy.

But, if either of these websites helps people realize they need to execute caution when buying a horse, then I say it’s a good website.

Gosh, rsc, weren’t you just a little harsh in describing horsetradertricks.com? Did you read any of the other information on the site, or did you just read some of the stories? The site is trying to illustrate what can happen when novice equestrians buy horses from dishonest traders. The site suggests in numerous places that beginner riders should get expert help when buying a horse, and use a trainer if at all possible, to make the transition to horse ownership more successful.

As for the stories, Molly went to a boarding stable and asked the owner for advice. Her description of her experience with horses, which consisted of “loving to gallop as a teen” and a handful of rental horse fixes as an adult” should have clued the stable owner in; instead she sold Molly a 3 year-old horse. Yes, it was a disaster, but since Molly didn’t know much, she relied on the expertise of a “professional.”

Rachel and John bought a horse described as very, very broke by the seller. The sellers were lying; they knew nothing about the horse, yet they sold it as “family safe.”

I own 4 horses. Three of them are sweet, well-trained animals. If I don’t ride for several months, I can still go out to the pasture and hop on without fear of being dumped. They are steady and calm and I can’t imagine any of them going into a “rodeo buck,” no matter how long it’s been since I’ve ridden them.

Horsetradertricks.com does not advocate holding ethical sellers responsible for the stupid mistakes made by inexperienced horse buyers. It is a site designed to educate people about ways to avoid making stupid mistakes in the first place, for their own sakes as well as the horses they buy. If you felt the need to criticize the site, I wish you had taken the time to read a bit more before jumping to false conclusions.

This story does not surprise me at all, not even a little bit. I attended Oregon State in the early 2000s and purchased a DOG, yes a dog, through the surplus goods auction and also helped to buy SIX ponies through the same from the veterinary school. The ponies were originally obtained via auction, used for surgery classes and were then “disposed of” via surplus goods auction.

In my experience, the various animal-related parts of a university are more likely to be completely autonomous than otherwise. Where I went to vet school, the farrier school worked hand in hand with the vet school, the research horses got medical care but frequently had teeth neglected (the research animal vets were trying to set up a program to have the students float them regularly for practice, which we certainly needed, but there was some hold-up; I assume their feet were no better), the animal science department had a reputation for avoiding the vets until something was dead on its feet (and then complaining that everything they sent to the vet school died), and the riding horse program and polo team did their own thing (I’m pretty sure they used outside vets, actually, and I heard a rumor from a local practitioner that the polo team was using an unlicensed dentist). The presence of a vet or farrier school on campus means nothing to the likelihood of any particular subset of animals actually getting care, because there is no university animal oversight office.

I was actually going to make a similar comment/point (and I suspect I may have gone to same school as you for my undergrad.) But I would like to expand on it. Different departments will have different attitudes towards animals, and often for political reasons, they often don’t work as well together as you would think. For instance, the animal science departments at both the schools I’ve attended have left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve seen them as departments with the primary goal of making money off of animals, nothing more. Often it is head of the departments with old-school attitudes that animals are disposable money makers, and issues of animal care are not a concern unless it cuts into your profit. (Not to mention the attitude that Equine Programs as totally worthless because they don’t make as much money for the department as cows or sheep or pigs.) And while not all AS departments are like this, and certainly not all the professors or students (I’ve known many wonderful animal welfare advocates in animal science) it seems to be a trend. And calling the vet school to treat the animals ? “Well those a-holes will just lecture you if you call them over to repair the barb-wired wounds on your animals, and then go on about how the enclosures are far too small, and how access to water is important!”

I guess my point is A.) don’t donate your horse (or any animal), to a University unless you yourself think they are disposable – they may very well be to the university program. Also keep in mind that vet schools often perform potentially lethal procedures on these animals, and you will need to be comfortable with that. My friend donated his pet cow to a vet school, and a year later she died of complications related to an experimental surgery.
B.) try not to judge an entire University on the actions of some bad directors/department heads. (For instance, my University shouldn’t be conducting animal research AT ALL based off the behavior of the dean the the agriculture department. But that was only one program, and the animal care in my department is excellent. ) If your interested in attending a University, check out the particular program or department you are interested it. If it is an excellent program, but may have some animal welfare issues, consider attending with the goal of changing attitudes and practices from the inside. You will likely have many allies in such a pursuit!
