Come one, come all: Fundraiser for Me and My Sucky Life!

Yet more internet panhandling – this time on Facebook!
(You may have to join FB to see it, I’m not sure since I was logged in already)
Â
Â
In case they delete it before some of you read it, this was created by a young woman called Elizabeth Randall. Here is her tale of woe:
Â
“Hello my name is Elizabeth Randall and i am trying to do a fundraiser for my horse Gypsy Rose. On the 3rd of July i went out to check on my horse before the 4th of July and started talking to the property owners son on how Gypsy was doing, I asked if she had any cuts or anything of that type and he said “yeah she had a cut on her leg”. So I told him “ok well I am gonna go get her and check on her” and he said “…ok”. When I went and got her and brought her into the barn to check her leg the cut looked really bad it had scabbed over and looked like it had a lot of dirt in it. SoIpicked the scabs off lead her outside hosed it off for about 30 min then went and tied her back up so I could get some things to clean it with. I came back with alcohol cause we didnt have any peroxide at the time, gauze pads, and a vet wrap. I lifted her leg put the alcohol on it and she behaved really well given the fact that I know it stung, all she did was look down at me like ouch that hurt. She didn’t move her leg or the rest of her body she behaved really well. So after I cleaned it with alcohol, I put gauze pads on it and wrapped it and left her in for the night. I went back the next morning and pulled the gauze pads and wrap off and let it air dry a bit. Now it has been a little over 2 weeks and I dont feel it’s healing the way it should be so, I am doing this fundraiser to help me with the vet costs that it’s gonna take to fix this. I am also doing the fundraiser as well to check her if she’s pregnant. The place that im keeping Gypsy at now there was a Palomino that we were told was about a 1 1/2 gelding. During the time that he was there he had a ball half drop and was potent. Gypsy came into heat on the 4th of June and hasn’t been into heat since and I was also told that Gypsy and this Palomino were together a lot when she was in heat. As we found out The Palomino was was potent the property owner gave the Palomino back to the original owner. But I was told on the 10th of July that according to the vet the Palomino was a 3 year old stallion, he had one ball stuck up inside him and the other only half dropped. I have recently lost my job and now I can’t immediately pay the vet bills that are to come with the pregnancy check and the hurt leg. UPDATE: WENSDAY JULY 21ST THE VET CAME OUT TODAY AND CHECKED GYPSY’S LEG AND DID SOME TESTS ON IT HE SAID “SHE IS SORE ON IT BUT SHE WILL HEAL, IT MAY TAKE AWHILE BUT SHE WILL HEAL,” HE ALSO SAID AS FOR RIDING HER “YOU CAN RIDE HER BUT ONLY WALKING AND LITTLE TROTTING FOR NOW (NO CANTERING!!)” HE ALSO SAID THAT “IF HER LEG GETS WORSE OR SHE STARTS NOT PUTTING WEIGHT ON IT THEN I NEED TO CALL HIM BACK OUT A.S.A.P.” AS FOR HER PREGNANCY TEST IT WENT OK HE DID HAVE TO TRANQUILIZER FOR HIS OWN SAFETY, AND GYPSY DOESN’T LIKE NEEDLES SO WHEN HE PUT THE NEEDLE IN HER WAY OF SHOWING THAT SHE DIDN’T LIKE IT WAS THROWING HER HEAD UP, IN THE PROCESS SHE HIT HER HEAD ON THE BAR THAT GOES OVER THE DOORWAY, BUT HE PET HER AND CALMED HER RIGHT DOWN BEFORE PUTTING THE TRANQUILIZER IN WHICH ONLY TOOK SECONDS. AFTER HE PUT THE TRANQUILIZER AND GAVE HER SOME TIME TO ADJUST TO IT HE ASKED ME IF SHE’S EVER BEEN TWITCHED AND I SAID NO SO HE SHOWED ME WHAT TO DO AND TOLD ME ALL I HAD TO DO WAS TO KEEP PRESSURE ON IT. WHILE I DID THAT HE PUT THE LONG GLOVE ON PROCEEDED TO CLEAN OUT HER BACK AREA SO THAT HE COULD PUT THE CAMERA IN HER TO SEE IF SHE WAS PREGNANT OR NOT. AFTER HE GOT IT IN TO WHERE HE NEEDED IT AND LOOKED ON HIS MACHINE FOR A BIT HE SAID “CONGRATS” IM LIKE “HUH?” AND THEN HE SAID IM JUST GONNA CHECK AND MAKE SURE THERE IS ONLY ONE LUCKILY THERE WAS ONLY ONE. AFTER THAT HE PULLED THE MECHANISM OUT AND SAID “OK YOU CAN TAKE THE TWITCH OFF AND LEAD HER IN THE STALL THE REST OF THE WAY.” SO I DID AND THEN HE SHOWED ME THE IMAGES OF THE BABY. AFTER THAT HE TOLD ME TO GIVE HER AT LEAST AN HOUR FOR THE TRANQUILIZER TO WEAR OFF AFTER IT WORE OFF I TURNED HER BACK OUTSIDE WITH HER BUDDIES. The bill to have the vet out to pregnancy check her and check her leg was not cheap. Gypsy has a long road ahead of her and I dont have the money for all the vet care, and gas, and shots, and supplies, and bloodwork thats gonna need to be done and any type of injury that might need immediate care, as I lost my job a week a go. So any and all donations would be greatly appreciated you can paypal me a donation to ciscodottymomo@gmail.com mark it as vet bill.”
Â
Â
(Scroll down and you will see some very intelligent and sensible comments by Cathy Bailey and Brandy Semonich. Ladies, you hit all the points on the head. This baby does NOT need to happen and it is certainly early enough to prevent it from happening.)
Â
Â
Here is my question: Elizabeth, why should the world give you money to pay for your personal horse? Can you just explain that one thing to me? Yeah, you lost your job. So have a lot of people in the past few years, but they are not panhandling on the Internet as a result. They are out, you know, looking for new jobs and a startling number of them have, as a result, found new jobs and been able to pay their bills. I know this is a shocking concept. First you have to get off the Internet, or at least surf away from Facebook and start filling out applications.
Â
Â
Elizabeth, if you were 15, I would cut you some slack on this post. I would say, poor kid, her parents won’t pay to properly care for the horse, she’s in a bad spot, etc. But you’re not. You’re 25 according to your facebook profile. Guess what, sunshine, you’re an adult. You’re not disabled, you’re not unable to work. You need to figure this out for yourself.
Â
Â
Oh, and you have a seven week old blue heeler/lab mix puppy for sale on your facebook for fifty dollars. That does not exactly endear you to me, either. Are you the only thing at your house that isn’t accidentally pregnant?
Â
Â
Oh, and AFTER your mare got cut up, you STILL went on vacation and admit you didn’t tend to it for a week. That’s in the comments on your wall. So let’s review: You cannot afford the vet but you can afford to go on vacation for a week. Honey, you really shouldn’t put this stuff on Facebook where everybody can read it. You are very bad at scamming people online. You might HAVE to get a legit job, because I don’t think you are smart enough to be an effective con artist.
Â
Â
Now, pull down your stupid page (you will, as soon as you find out it is on here) and start filling out applications and for god’s sake get the vet to abort your mare before you have another mouth that you cannot feed. For your convenience:
Â
Â
Â
Â
Â
Â
Hope that helps! Now please spay your damn dog — you’ve really gotten on every nerve I possess this morning.

WOW!!! Can I panhandle on here??? My grulla gelding has had a rash on his neck for the last month and a half. Had the vet out, it’s not rainrot, ringworm, sweet itch or anything else. I left WalMart, looking like I had jock itch, athlete’s foot and a yeast infection, as each anti-fungal cream, had a different “main” ingredient. Plus I went to TSC and bought a bottle of anti-fungal spray. Guess what, nothing has worked! His neck is worse and it has spread to his chest… The vet was out again this morning, and I’m now giving antihistimine, since they believe it’s allergic dematitis. We’re on a fixed income, so can I get some money please??? LOL
It’s unbelievable that anyone has the balls to ask for money! Yes, she can get rid of the baby now, and NO, she shouldn’t have gone on vacation! I guess not everyone have their priorities right..
By the way, thanks to the last blog about sick horses and showing, I did have my vet write a note for me today, that my horse is NOT contagious, since I plan on going to a show this weekend. Covering my bases.
WOO HOO First post of the day!!! LOL
You’re not feeding your gelding garlic, are you? It sounds exactly like the rash my mare had, and it turned out she was allergic to the garlic I was feeding her as a supplement. The vet told me it’s not uncommon – in fact aloe vera and garlic top her list of causes for “irrational rash” in horses.
No, he’s not getting garlic. I’ll be picking up some Head & Shoulders shampoo though, since it will help get rid of his “dandruff”, as per the vet’s suggestion…LOL
Try some stuff called Nioxin, your hairdresser can order it. It’s a topical scalp lotion, I get a terrible rash at the base of my hairline every summer when it gets hot and prickly from sweat. I put a little on and rub it n the scalp, stops the itching and burning feeling and I can then leave it alone….it will at least soothe him. I would also try some gold bond powder….
Ugh, not sure that I would wash my horses with dandruff shampoo. I did this once when I was little…I used to use up all of the people shampoo nobody wanted on my horse. Well, the one happened to be dandruff shampoo. I washed him with it (mind you, this was the morning of the show.), and after our first class (when he broke a light sweat) he broke out in terrible hives. Since this had never happened before I suggested to the show vet that it may be due to the dandruff shampoo I bathed him in. He agreed that the active ingredients can cause severe hives and suggested a good bath, an antihistamine and electrolytes. After all this he was cleared by the vet to show (a few hours later), although he was still not quite at 100%; however, by that point I had already missed several classes. Never used dandruff shampoo on a horse again.
Dandruff shampoo worked great on my mare’s legs after she got mud fever.
LOL. YES!! *Commence sarcasm*
I too have a tale of woe I’d like for strangers to help me with — my husband has a rash on his neck, due to contact dermatitis, much like your gelding, and it is making him cranky. We too have tried most of the embarrassing WalMart remedies and recently were forced to buy actual human medicine
We have decided that it is stress related, probably about residency applications. If only someone would give us vast amounts of money, I know his rash would clear up immediately. We’re very KYOOT nice people and will send you photos and updates of our lives, and those of our dog and three toilet trained cats.
All you need to do is send us your money, or the photos will become progressively more dire, sad and winsome. In order to make it easier for you to do so, I am holding a back-to-basics fundraiser — no entertainment, no raffles, no giving back to the community, no silent auctions, or all that crap where I put some effort into proper fundraising (’cause those are hard, you know). I just want your money, not your presence or uncomfortable questions.
Finally, I just know that if someone would just contribute some money for me to buy a new set of Ariat boots, I would become a better rider and then be able to hire out as a talented trainer and make copious amounts of money to pay you all back!! Yay!! Thanks so much everyone for helping me in this time of need.
*End sarcasm*
OK, seriously, thanks FHOTD for that little experience this morning. The kindest thing people can do for their kids, apparently, is not give them money and make them work. That way, they’ll be able to cope with life’s little money whammies in a more constructive way than Facebooking long ranty paragraphs. Failbook all the way! And she couldn’t even be bothered to pretend to hold to the niceties of fundraising?? As in, if your business sends me some money, I will proudly ride my next show with a slogan around my neck saying “XX pharmacies saved my horse!”
Idiotic cause du jour, I hope you live briefly and fizzle like expired fire works.
Well, to be fair, how many businesses are going to want an illiterate women riding an injured, pregnant horse in half English half western tack to wear their slogan?
“Here Hunny, here is some money, now don’t ever let ANYONE know we know you.”
LOL, Dont you love the Mystery rashes that force you to buy the Vag creams!!!!!
On a side note, when you get the H&S to wash him in dilute it in a bucket then put it on him with a sponge. I had my dogs vet ask me how I bathed my dog and tell me to never put the shampoo directly onto her. There’s a chance that some wont get rinsed off and will dry out her skin and cause her to get red itchy skin
could be threadworms.. you have to de-worm with ivermectin every week or 2 weeks to get rid of them, their life cycle is shorter than 2 months.. I think 3 times in a row does it, or short cycle on the quest.
My mare had a rash on her neck, turns out she is allergic to the flyspray I was using. I slathered the area with Swat to keep the flies off and the area looks much better. Good luck, must be miserable to have a rash in this heat!
My boy had the same problem…nasty, flaky, schmutzy skin down his neck and shoulders. My vet told me the same thing, allergic dermatitis. Turns out, it was the fly spray I was using.
The flies have been horrible this year, and being the mother hen that I am, I was drowning him in Repel-X several times a day…He was appreciative, and would come running when he saw the bottle; his sensitive TB skin was not so enthused.
I’ve since switched to Equi-Spot, an every 2 week treatment that goes on like Frontline for dogs/cats, and it seems to work. In between, I use Eqyss Marigold fly spray. It doesn’t have any pyrethrins and doesn’t seem to irritate Nino at all.
As for the dandruff, I gave him a scrub down with Cowboy Magic Rosewater shampoo (smells awesome and doesn’t bother even really sensitive horses that I’ve noticed) a couple times a week to remove any residual spray and fed flaxseed to help rebuild healthy skin oils. He is now (knock on wood!) schmutz free.
I don’t know if your situation is the same, but it might be worth a shot! ^_^
My favorite part of her page is when someone said they would not be able to attend the fundraiser- this was their nice way of saying I am not going to give you money – and she came back with “it’s an ONLINE thing!”
Looks like the entitlement complex does apply to those over 20.
So since my arab gelding pulled his impar ligament, pulling off a piece of his navicular bone, and the vet bill was $560, not to mention a previous vet bill of a misdiagnosed problem of “thin soles”, which I knew was a crock ‘o crap, but had the farrier put Equipak on just to be sure (total waste of money). Anyway, I can go on the Internet with a sob story and get people to send me money????? WOO HOO!
Except for one small detail……………..I wouldn’t be able to look myself in the mirror afterwards!!!
I’m appalled at the fellow Tards on her page. One is recommending that she apply furious onto the wound? As if the wound wasn’t angry enough…
Another is telling her to make a sugar, vinegar and water paste. Maybe it works on minor wounds, but for something serious I would recommend vet care.
I really get a kick out of people trying to make themselves sound intelligent when they aren’t. It makes for a giggly morning read.
One last thought, how can you have a one and a half gelding? If nobody had the vet out to held him, wouldn’t one think he’s still capable of reproducing? Sorry, guys. Horses aren’t born gelding. Big shocked, you might have to recover from that tidbit of info…
That sounds like a good pick up line “I’m a one and a half gelding, so I can’t get you pregnant!”
That’s what I thought! What the heck is a 1 1/2 gelding?! They didn’t cover that in Vet Assisting! And if a 1 1/2 gelding has even a slight chance of reproducing, why keep it with a mare?
And is it just me, or why is she asking for a fundraiser to keep the pregnancy instead of ABORTING it?
What killed me were the comments telling her to try to collect the vet bills for the foal from the property owner, as it was THEIR fault the stallion was there.
I mean, it’s not the owner’s job at all to check on the living conditions and pasture mates of their horses! They should just, you know, buy whatever BS their friend tells them and then get both indignant and excited when their mare turns up pregnant!
Sorry, honey. Your horse – your responsibility.
Also, they gave the stallion BACK instead of just gelding it? What?
it certainly is the farm owner’s and the stallion owner’s responsibility. If I board my mare somewhere I sure as hell don’t expect her to come up pregnant. How is having someone else’s stallion around knocking up mares the mare owner’s responsibility?
I think she means 1 1/2 yr. old gelding, because further down it says that he is actually a 3 yr. old stallion.
That would make more sense! But it’s hard to understand anything by the way she types. For pete’s sake someone donate to her so she can take an English class!
What’s really said is the 12 year old (I think she was 12) and other minors who don’t know any better and are offering to help..
The way she rides is pretty scary, too. Watch the videos if anyone has a chance to.
Oh and it sure LOOKS like the girls got some money if you look through her pics.
Not trying to sound rude here, but when I read her “explanation” of what happened I kept thinking, “why won’t her parents pay for the care?” Then I read that she was 25… YIKES. I am usually not a grammar drill sergeant (mostly because I am usually the offender, hehe), but her “paragraph” was bad enough that even I had to re-read a few sentences to understand what she was trying to say.
As far as the horse goes, she looks like a cute, kind little thing! I would take her home in a heartbeat! It’s too bad that she is now going to be put through an unnecessary pregnancy that her owner cannot afford. What a WASTE. That foal does not need to happen (and SHOULD NOT happen).
I would venture to guess that she may receive quite a bit more support if she was fundraising for a horsie abortion.
She is, in my humble opinion, a pathetic, whining little snot. And I agree with you Fugs: if it were me, I would be scrambling to get several part time jobs to make ends meet (which I have had to do over the years).
She should get the mare a termination for Gods sake. Or we will be seeing the filly/colt on Craigslist when it’s a yearling and have to listen to her whine yet again.
Elizabeth….put on the big girl panties and grow the hell up.
Yes, I love her comments. They’re almost universally curt, entitled, and bordering on rude. WTF, she’s begging for money!
Your tag really needs to include Humor, because this is actually pretty funny. Okay, so the mare getting knocked up, and having (Is that her actual injury?!) an ugly leg wound isn’t funny. But the writing ability alone is fantastic! The veterinarian speaks in all caps? I really wish sometimes I could be a fly on the wall. Can you imagine that poor vet trying to explain basic horse husbandry to that woman? Seriously, she probably thinks husbandry involves a wedding and flower girls!
I do actually feel sorry for the mare. Is she located in an area where she could be rescued? Because it sounds like the stable owners might be every bit as dense as she is. Putting a crypt out with mares, and not taking care of the issue? Then again, maybe the woman is confusing her story. Maybe the barn owners are actually responsible. Maybe it’s something in the water….
20-something?…yup
Am I old enough to be her mother?…sigh….yup again.
One generation apart? Yup
Lands her smack in the middle of the entitlement generation. I came from the ‘abused child’ generation. No free car, phone, laptop, I-Pod, taxi service. I had to, get this, WORK for what I wanted or lose it. In one generation, it’s gone from abuse to entitlement. I’m childless by choice, unless 4 legs & tails count. I watch my friends bail their kids out of one predicament after another, buy til the credit card is burning. Isn’t it amazing how much of this generation has no shame at all? No self pride? No motivation? Entertainment comes first, responsibility second. Hence, sweet pea’s vacation in lieu of vet care for her horse. So typical!
And on the last note………..I think Lutalyse is still cheaper than 3 Rhino boosters at months 5, 7, 9 for the mare and the foal check when it’s born. But I’ll bet THAT doesn’t happen!
I watch my friends bail their kids out of one predicament after another, buy til the credit card is burning. Isn’t it amazing how much of this generation has no shame at all? No self pride? Bingo.. We have a winner.
Those type of parents are everywhere. Where I board it seems their entire worth is to entertain and give their children everything and anything they want – 24×7. They live to entertain their children at any cost.
The media is also to blame. Yahoo looks like a freaking tabloid. Social media sights, along with other mind numbing crud, dumb people down. The plan — mindless consumers happily consuming.
Amazing the jump in one generation.
When painting, it’s best to avoid brushes that are too broad. While I agree that there are many bad parents just as you describe, not everyone from my generation (30 yrs. old this year) is the type of mindless consumer that you describe. Certainly the enabling parents are out there, and certainly the mediated messages of consumerism are overwhelming, but before the internet it was TV, and before that it was radio, and before that, magazines. My point is that throughout history, some people have always allowed themselves to become victims to their circumstances, while some rise above. Generation has very little to do with it, I think.
I promise all 20somethings are not as irresponsible as her. I am 23 and promise I have no sense of entitlement, and dont ask for handouts. I have a horse that we bought from a girl who had not been feeding him or watering him. It was 115 out and he had no water. He weighed 928lbs. I took him to the vet directly after getting him, he had an eye infection which caused him to go blind, a mouth full of ulcers and ended up costing me 1300. I had not been planning on having that high of a vet bill. Wanna know how I handled it? Got a second job.
I dont agree with what this girl is doing, and I think she should not be allowed to own animals… but it is not because she is 25. Its because she is an irresponsible idiot. =)
Exactly! How about some more blogs about young people that are doing the RIGHT thing, so we can help offset some of the negative stereotypes about our generation
Joe’s writings about the kids on TBfriends and riders like the girl (halfpassgal?) in the Breathe video never cease to amaze me.
Going to second what dressagepony said. Please, let’s not hate on everyone under 30. Everyone was young once, and dare I say, stupid too. Most of us grow out of it. I’m 27, worked through college, and have been paying my own bills ever since. I bought my very first new truck last fall, I have no credit card debt, pay my taxes, and work as hard as my [older] coworkers.
Most of the starving horses featured here were at the tender mercy of people in their 30s and 40s, nobody says that everyone born in the 60s and 70s are lazy and entitled. We recognize that they are just the bottom rung of humanity — that 5% that will always be falling on hard times because they make awful decisions and then refuse to step up.
Hey now! While I do agree with you in that many of my generation are… spoiled… to put it nicely, let’s not forget those of us that do NOT fit that stereotype and hate to be lumped in with them. I’m sure you meant to include “Except those of you that aren’t like this!” and just forgot
I will be the first to admit that I have grown up with a privileged lifestyle with a well-off family, and I will also be the first to say that my parents have instilled in me a great sense of responsibility and life skills, regardless of our financial situation.
So I want a horse? Work more at your current job and get another one. Does that mean you have to quit gymnastics to work more and have time for the daily care? Yes, it does. Well, you have to make those choices if that’s really what you want. Find a place to keep it that you can transport yourself to (i.e. bike or walk), rain or shine, humidity or blizzard (MinneSNOWta is no fun to bike in, let me tell you). Pay for it yourself, and lease before you buy to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. This is from non-horsey parents, who still know next to nothing about horses, but will be the first to say that I worked hard to do what I love and would be proud of me for sticking with it. And because of all that, I appreciate them and my 1000 lb baby all the more.
I know it is easy to make generalizations, but please keep in mind that that IS what it is: a generalization. Don’t forget those of us that don’t want to be handed everything and want to deserve what they do get. Just like not all western pleasure people go for peanut rollers, not all dressage people practice rollkur, and not all TWH people believe in soring, us hard-working, responsible young people hate to be lumped together with those that are not. Just saying.
I’m 28 this year and belong to the “entitlement” generation. My idea of “entitlement” is expecting people to not yell and scream at me when they want/need something from me. I worked my butt off to have a horse, cleaned stalls for riding lessons and work at a crappy job with a hostile work environment that pays AWESOME (to compensate for the hostile work environment?) so I can have a horse. I made a stupid mistake last month and accidentally paid my mortgage twice and had no money for food. I had something like a snickers bar or a spoonful of peanut butter per day for three days because I needed to save what food we had for my kids. And as stupid and prideful as it was while I used my VISA card to make sure my dogs got their Heartguard on time I wouldn’t use my VISA to buy anything beyond the necessities for food (milk, bread, peanut butter) and even then it wasn’t anything for me. My bills all got paid and the only one that suffered was me.
Not everyone from the “entitlement” generation was spoiled rotten. Some of us were raised by parents that actually DID abuse us and I for one somehow survived it without becoming a raging alcoholic/drug addict. Do I think I’m spoiled with high expectations sometime? Absolutely. How dare I think people should mean what they say?! The nerve I have! I paid for everything from my car to my insurance and gas. I didn’t go to college after high school because I was underage when I graduated and my parents refused to “let me” go out of state to the private school that was going to pay 3/4 of my tuition.
My sob story is have 6 horses, 2 are still at the trainers can someone help me with the trainers fee and feed for my horses plllllllleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaassssssssseeeeee LOL!! My bad I have a pickup loaded with hay that I’ve been too lazy to unload for going on 2 weeks now, but the funny thing is I haven’t run out of hay in the barn yet so not a high priority lol. The grain cans are about half full right now but usually carry the new grain in the car until that’s all used up so it doesn’t go bad in the bottom of the can. My girls training is paid for already and will be picking them up when they are done and possibly dropping another one off to work on an issue he has, might possibly leave one of my girls with him for some extra training as the trainer said she was about a week or so behind the other one. Not a surprise though since El Vira was halter broke and PB was not, but is now
LOL, no shit. Here’s my sob story: We hauled all the way to the ABRA World Show (2000 miles one way) and my horse went in one class (did get a top 5 in trail) and then stuck his hoofie between the stall door and the ground and gave it a yank and made himself lame for the rest of the show! So now I have a seven thousand dollar ribbon. Waaah! Waaah! Waaah! Send me money!
Oh, no, I’m SO sorry your ABRA show ended like that… and I hope the VLC is going to be okay! I figured you were busy at a show and was hoping to hear the results. That really, totally sucks.
I think he will be fine – he was improving steadily but he just gave it a good enough pull to be muscle sore all the way up to his groin. Horses!
I am joking that I am going to frame my $7,000 fifth place medallion for my office. Murphy’s law of horses, right? But at least mine is alive – two people lost horses at that show.
One from a drug reaction and one flipped itself over on the concrete.
THAT is scary. Their poor owners. Reasons #2168326 and #2168327 why I probably should not, in fact, own my own horse someday…. leasing might be better for my nervous system. Or maybe not, because then I’ll stress about someone else’s horse keeling over from something I may or may not have done!
When I read this I thought, “Crap, I wonder if I’m gong to end up on here!” I guess the difference is that I have a blog where I’m selling off things to help pay for Denali’s massive vet bills. I’m not begging for money. Yes, I’ve had people donate to me, but I didn’t beg for it. I have the donate button to make “buying” easier. I got another job to make sure she was taken care of and worked my summer vacation (I’m a teacher) teaching summer school. Owning a horse is a huge responsiblity, it’s like having a child. You never know when something is going to happen and being prepared is important. Denali is no where near other horses so she can’t get worked up and hurt herself again. I used my new saddle fund to pay for her vet bills and it made me very sad, but I needed to do it for her. Yesterday I recieved an amazing letter of support from one of my followers with a gift, but I didn’t ask for it.
Last thing I EVER want….to end open up the fugly blog and end up the topic!!
http://www.rehabdenali.blogspot.com <——– not begging right???
http://www.wildponybeast.blogspot.com <——– normal blog
See, I HIGHLY support what you are doing. I think it is FINE to sell things to pay your horse’s bills, or sell your services, with or without a humorous tale of woe explaining why you need the cash!
If I were this girl I’d be offering up some kind of service – heck, walk dogs – and tell my tale of woe and say, please hire me. That would be a good idea and might even develop into a J-O-B.
Whew! Thanks! Like I said, I just don’t EVER want to be the subject of this blog! I think that princess has it made, and that she lucked out when she suckered, I mean convinced me into buying her!
We love you Denali! And I love reading your blog =) You wont end up on here!
Added to that, I don’t really think that an ultrasound for pregnancy counts as a ‘massive vet bill’. Seriously, I can imagine a situation where I would ask for hand outs– I recently lost my job (found a temporary one, thank God), and if by some miserable coincidence my horse ran up a $5,000 vet bill, I’d probably be tempted to ask for help. Likewise, it isn’t as if you are asking us to pay your horse’s board and feed while she cooks up a brand new Fugly baby. You clearly got hit with an unusually high vet bill.
Not quite the same thing as wanting someone to pay for yearly shots, and complaining because that mean expensive vet wants a whole $200 for his work!
Last I asked my vet “how much to preg-check” she told me $35. And just for reference, back when one of our mares cut her lower front leg really bad and the vet had to put a cast on it for the wound to heal properly, the bill was never over $100 total. Just by looking at the pics, I’d say put the mare on stall rest, wash the wound out clean with water from a hose at least once a day, and use Furizone or similar antibiotic wound ointment. The most important thing would be to keep insects out of the wound. My vet has told me that most wounds that are in areas with muscle tissue and plenty of blood supply will heal with minimum treatment – as long as the wound is on the down side, so any drainage can escape.
It is really a sad deal that she is trying to swindle people out of money to pay for something that is her responsibility. And a sad deal that people who’ve helped/will be helping her with money don’t know better.
I don’t recall an ultrasound being more than $150, if it was even that! None of these methods of checking for pregnancy are THAT expensive.
LOL! I actually thought of you right away when I read this post! But I was thinking of how you were doing it RIGHT!
I have a horse that has been steadily losing weight after a small bout of colic last month. I’ve had him to the vet twice now at my own (gasp) expense, and they still can’t tell me why he’s losing weight. I don’t make a lot of money but I’m still able to afford to do the right thing, which is have hay at his feet 24/7, feed grain, rice bran, have his teeth floated, etc.
I just want to slap this girl silly. Not only should she not own the mare, she definitely isn’t responsible enough to deal with a foal on the ground…
However, fugs, you made me laugh out loud with this one:

Hope that helps! Now please spay your damn dog — you’ve really gotten on every nerve I possess this morning.
Thanks!! I needed that
Try beet pulp. I know lots of people are afraid of it, but I soak it overnight and my super difficult keeper actually put weight on with it. You can replace up to 40% of the roughage with it, and the higher calorie-density of the fiber really helps. I had totally maxed out my horses ability to consume any more but he wasn’t putting any weight on. 25 pounds of hay, 6 pounds of soaked delta pellets, and 2.5 pounds of senior feed plus supplements including hard keeper fed in three separate meals. He wasn’t finishing all of his food anymore and he was still super thin and not gaining. I switched out five pounds of the hay for beet pulp, and he looks FABULOUS. It’s been great, and it is pretty cheap too, so it isn’t killing me financially to do it.
Have you tried adding fats ( soybean/corn oil)? to your pony’s feed?
It’s healthier for the horse to add more fat to his already consumed ration than to add more to his ration overall.
You have to remember that a horse’s stomach holds about 4lbs of food before it empties into the intestine – so if you feed more than that in grain / concentrate at once, you’re not getting all of the nutrients out of your feed = pony doesn’t gain weight. It also puts your horse more at risk for digestive upsets / colic as you then have undigested grain entering the hindgut/cecum and then fermenting. Leading to a whole host of more problems like laminitis.
What the hell was I thinking!? Two of my horses recently cut themselves pretty bad (a nice cut on the face to the skull for one and very ugly ripped butt on the other). Both horses were seen by the vet immediately and are healing nicely. I have canceled my CMO rides I had planned to attend for the next couple of months to pay the vet bills. Silly me, taking full responsibility.
I did contact her about the puppy, I recently lost my lab/heeler dog (BEST trail dog ever) and would actually like to have the pup. However, I won’t give her any money for the dog. I told her I would give the dog a lifetime of proper care and love. If she agrees, the first thing I will do is spay the puppy!
What? A lab-heeler TRAIL dog???! Noooooo!
I’ve competed in obedience and other sports (including herding) since 1977. I had an Australian cattle dog (heeler) for 16 years. He was the most barking, animal-chasing, reactive dog I’ve ever had in my life. I tried introducing him to horses so we could trail ride, and all he wanted to do was chase them and bite the crap out of their hind legs. This dog had obedience & agility titles, but was out-of-control around horses or any other livestock. I could have knocked him in the head with a steel shovel, and it wouldn’t have deterred him in the slightest. Even a year of private lessons with a former state stockdog champion couldn’t channel him into acceptable behavior around stock.
Not knowing about horses, and being 25 at the time, I finally tied him to my saddled ex-stallion in Costa Rica, figuring he’d get kicked and learn his lesson, then we’d all go for a nice ride. Instead, the dog got kicked many times in the head (which he ignored), then chased and bit the horse, got rope wrapped around the horse’s legs and almost ran him into the arena fence. Dog 1 – Horse 0. Neither was hurt to the point of blood, but it could have been a fatal mistake, and was definitely the stupidest decision I ever made in my life. Needless to say, this dog could not go with me when I rode across Costa Rica on horseback.
A training customer with a boarding stable got a 1/2-heeler, 1/2-Border Collie. She came to me because the dog chased the horses non-stop and had hamstrung two client’s horses. Even a shock collar didn’t deter the dog. The owner wanted to euthanize, but I found him a home with my friends. He earned 3 agility championships… but had to be kept away from stock for the rest of his life. (His new owners actually had horses on their farm, but the dog was never taken to that area of the farm because of his background).
People tend to think that a herding breed is a natural match for “farm life,” “horse owners,” etc. Nothing could be further from the truth!!! Dogs from herding breeds need to be confined at all times away from the stock, only allowed out under supervision to train on and work stock under command. Even perfectly-trained Border Collies stockdogs competing at the highest levels will kill livestock, run it into fences, and run it to death-by-exhaustion if allowed access to stock while the owner is away from the farm. A friend’s Open-level stockdog escaped his pen while he was at work, and killed his entire flock of sheep by herding them into the barn then pushing them tighter and tighter until they died from heatstroke. And Border Collies (of which I have had 3 competitive stockdogs) are “soft” and easy compared to heelers!
And don’t count on the Lab part to temper the heeler part. You got lucky once, but don’t count on it to happen again. I’d vote heelers and heeler-anything crosses as possibly the worst possible dogs to have around horses.
P.S. When I had 10 acres in the country from 2001-2007, me and the neighbors experienced a rash of livestock killings. The neighbor lost lambs and elderly sheep one after another… their entire flock of chickens. I lost 3 of my 5 pet ducks on the same day while I was running an errand and left them to wander the property. The dog was eventually caught in act of killing an adult sheep. It was a 12 year old Labrador Retriever with a big fatty tumor on her tummy–yet was able to clear 4′ woven-wire fences. She lived more than a mile away in a ritzy suburb, and was owned by somebody high up in city politics. Guess what he did? Paid for all the dead stock, then sent the dog to “live in the country”!!!
Just a lesson that Labs aren’t necessarily trustworthy with stock either.
If I still had a horse, I guess I’d go with something like a Beagle as a trail dog.
K9shrink – I sincerely hope you’ve learned better dog training methods than shock collars. Blue heelers are by nature nippy and hard headed with stock. They were bred to chase and herd cattle, and do it by nipping at heals and taking the occasional kick to the head.
Border collies generally work without making contact with the stock.
Either breed can be excellent trail dogs, with the right training. The best trail dog I’ve ever known was a border collie – she ran alongside the string (mules and horses) all day, kept an eye on them in the evening and helped round them up in the morning.
You are correct that you don’t just leave herding breeds out with stock, but they can be trained. You happened to find two examples of indivduals that weren’t (or could not be). For a trail dog, I’d go with one of the larger spaniel or pointer breeds.
NotFollower, I didn’t say *I* used the shock collar. It had been used before I came on the scene. Anyway, I and other positive trainers I know (I’ve been a clicker trainer since 1995) do sometimes use shock collars in the case of stock chasing, and for rattlesnake avoidance training. Since this already hadn’t worked for this dog, however, I helped them find a great agility home for him.
Other than hearing about your dogs in the comments, I have never in my 45 year life seen or heard of a herding breed being a “trail dog” acccompanying horses. All I can think is that these must be very watered-down dogs that have no herding instict left in them. Of the hundreds of BCs and dozens of ACDs and ACD mixes that I know, many have had bones shattered during kicks, and they’ll still go out after they heal and try to chase/herd any stock they see. If getting a femur shatttered isn’t aversive enough to keep the dog away from stock, I fail to see how a less aversive method will keep the dog from attacking stock.
I guarantee that no matter how young the dog is when introduced to stock, breeding for herding and/or predatory instint will take over. I used to have a JRT (#1 conformation JRT in America in 1998), and he killed over 200 animals in his life–all indoors or while in my fenced back yard. From the day I got him as a puppy, this dog had dozens of hours of controlled (clicker) desensitizationto non-running cats. He was so frantic wanting to kill the cats that he wouldn’t take treats; even hours after having seen a cat from 100 yards away, he would be whining hysterically and on hunger strike trying to figure out how to get back and kill it.
After he killed his first 2 cats (scaling a 6′ privacy fence to get them), I moved on to aversives. Throwing buckets of water at him when he lunged towards a cat, boot kicking him across the room to save the cat, electric shock collars, muzzling him and putting him in an smallroom with two able-bodied former strays with claws. We ended up moving in with a room-mate with cats, and the cats lived in one room, while the dog was prevented from going to that end of the house with an indoor shock collar system. For two years, he waited 3″ inside the shock zone whining and going crazy wanting to kill those cats, which he couldn’t even see. He finished out his life in the countryside, where I had to put up a 5′ chainlink fence with top and bottom rails, hot wires, AND an underground “invisible fence” (with shock collar) to keep him confined so he didn’t kill wildlife. He still killed almost 200 animals that ventured inside the fence, including more cats. At the age of 14 1/2, while traveling with friends, he killed 5 barn cats during an ill-advised off-leash excursion at “grandpa’s farm.”
The kicker: This dog was the #2 obedience JRT in America, the most titled JRT in the world, a pro model for Hallmark and Purina, and UK “therapy dog of the year” at Crufts 2000. He was NOT an “untrained” dog.
Even the JRTs I’ve known that were raised with cats since birth all ended up killing the household cats by the time they were 6 months old. This is just another example that natural instincts are often impossible to eradicate regardless of the amount of positive/negative training or simple exposure. I LOVE JRTs and would love to get another, but now that I have a parrot and a cat, I’ll never been able to get one as long as I live (since the parrot will live 60 years). I’ve learned that certain breeds don’t mix with other animals…
Thanks for generalizing. Sorry for YOUR experiences, however that is not the experience that I have had or anyone that I know that’s interacted with these breeds. I’ve had 2 Heelers that went trail riding with me. The female was more difficult as she was almost 5 before she saw her first horse. She would run behind the horses, but never tried to assault anything. My male has been on the trail since he was 6 months old. He was exposed to the horses at 12 weeks when I picked him up from the breeder. He has been an outstanding trail dog. I love the herding breeds because they stay with the horses always. They never go out exploring on their own.
My riding buddy had a Aussie Shepherd that always rode with us as well. When he passed she purchased a lab. The Lab trail rides and is wonderful. A Border Collie mix was dumped at the barn. Guess what?? The BC mix, the lab and my Cattle Dog all trail ride.
The Amish community near me has their own Aussie blend that the breed and adore. They keep them around their horses and livestock. These dogs will shred a wild critter and then go snuggle the calves and chickens. If the herding breeds were unreliable the Amish certainly wouldn’t be raising them. Their livestock is their livelihood.
We’ve also had Belgians, GSD’s, Airedales, Husky’s and mongrels.. Never have we had an animal that would go after the horses or attack the cats. Your experience is not the norm. Having that many poor experiences with dogs of different breeds and backgrounds, I would question your handling – not the breeds.
” I have never in my 45 year life seen or heard of a herding breed being a “trail dog†acccompanying horses.”
Well, now you have
I think its fascinating what one trainer can call out of a dog vs another trainer. Not all dogs are cut from the same cloth – even if they are from the same breed or litter. Just as not all trainers are cut from the same cloth even if they use the same style of training.
My APBT don’t cause news headlines and eat kids or other dogs, and my rat terriers don’t kill my cats. Something to be said for individual training styles…
You can’t win, K9shrink, there will always be people arguing because of the x number of dogs they had and they did or did not do this or that. The point is, there are a lot of herding dogs out there that are pain in the a?? when around other animals, and the yellow labs aren’t much better, so chances are a heeler/lab mix will not likely make a good trail companion.
And I’ll agree with you on beagles. Ours made a great trail dog.
Eh, my German Coolie x Border Collie trail rides just fine. I only got her when she was over two years old and she is now going on five.
She does walk right behind the horse where I can’t see her, which is annoying to me but the horse (this is just my horse in particular) doesn’t mind, as the dog doesn’t snap and/or touch her in any way. Neither does it bark.
When we move at anything faster than a walk (i.E. trot and canter) the dog usually stays next to us where possible or in front of the horse. When she realizes that her distance is getting too small/she is in danger of catching a hoof, she usually retreats to the side or back.
And I didn’t actually do any sort of specialized training (hence the walking right behind the horse) I am lucky enough to be able to go riding on private land as well as out on public trails, so I just started taking her along when I rode and she quickly worked out the best way.
And I have to agree about the herding breeds not straying. I’ll forget I took the dog for about an hour and never give any commands and she will still be right there like the good girl she is.
I also don’t confine her on the property anymore, as she NEVER crosses the boundaries she has been taught (well before the actual property boundaries) and she jumps/climbs/digs out of just about anything if confined.
I have had neighbors, mail dudes, horse riders whom I know pass my house regularly and pretty much anyone else in this town give me feedback on how they go passing the driveway/front of the house and have never had her reported off property without me
So I have to say, the dog you are describing sucks imho :S Herders are NOT supposed to KILL, only HERD.
Even cattle dogs are only allowed to snap at the livestock’s heels, not like.. Maul them xD The kind of herder that kills stuff catches lead poisoning via a bullet real quick around here….
you’re wrong when you say labs arent trustworthy! i have a lab mix rescue and a pure bred lab puppy and they are great around my animals. it all depends on how they are raised, you said this lab lived in the suburbs so she/he probably never saw livestock before and was never taught how to react to them so she followed her instinct, which was to chase the wierd running things and kill them. dont blame the breed because of one untrained pooch!
Sometimes the breed you least expect are great dogs with stock – best one I’ve ever had was a Corgi. Seriously – I’ll recommend that breed to *anyone* wanting a dog that’s good with all manner of livestock – they don’t chase or nip, but they’re not afraid. AWESOME stock dogs.
Corgis are heelers, that itis what they were bred to do !
I’ve got an Australian Shepherd that is an excellent trail dog, other then he likes to walk out in front of traffic sometimes… I think he just likes to hear me yell…
Ok, I had to create an account just to respond to this post.
You should read the comments earlier about how gross generalizations are not a good thing. I have a black lab/blue heeler cross, she is the greatest dog! She will chase the horses if they start running, not to herd them, just because they’re running and she wants to play too. She’s easily called off, and has never tried to bite a single horse, just thinks they’re big dogs and wants to play. She’s never chased a horse while I was riding it, and is the greatest trail dog ever!
I also have a pure breed ACD/Blue Heeler who will not chase anything. As a matter of fact the first time I took her to the barn (age 3) our 2 year old filly chased her! I heard barking coming from behind me, turn around to yell at the dog, and see the filly with her head down chasing the heeler. And the heeler running in terror.
So not all cattle dogs chase things. Not all of any breed, does any thing!
And good luck with a beagle as a trail companion. It’s a general rule with hounds, they will follow their nose. I’ve owned many beagles and coon dogs in my life, none were ever good trail dogs. But like I said before, not all generalizations are true. My friend had a wonderful Cur Hound that was a great farm/horse/trail dog.
And on the subject of the original post… I wish I could have seen the page before it got removed, that is priceless! And I work for a major university clinic, I know what those two procedures would have cost at our prices… So at some local vet’s prices, it’s probably less than $400. You can earn that 2 weeks, doing just about anything.
As far as the generation of spoild… Here in the south it starts around the early 20′s and goes down. Of course this doesn’t apply to all. But it seemed the generation of parents right behind mine were the ones that were ‘anti-spanking’ and wanted to ‘discuss’ everything (since discussion works so great with teens). You see alot more parents going back to the spankings and time outs. After watching that generation grow up without them, our generation saw how poorly that worked out. You know… real punishments… not being sent to their room where there is a flat screen TV, laptop w/ unrestricted internet, and every video game system made! Good hard manual labor is always a good one! And I think this girl needs a good whipping, a long time of tedious manual labor, and everything taken from her that was paid for by her parents… bet she won’t be left with much!
My blue heeler joins my horse and I on trail rides almost every day. I started taking her when she was still a pupy. She obeys commands from me when I am in the saddle including; “wait” and “behind”. I can’t think of a better dog that I would want out there with me. Of course mine is a “Heeler” not a “Healer” like Elizabeth has. I wonder if her dog has magical healing powers?
This gal needs a huge smack upside the head with the CluebyFour, and her poor horse needs a more responsible owner!
WRT dogs I think that while a lot of herding instinct is genetic, you can do a lot to modify it and channel it appropriately with training. I think we also need to remember that all dogs are individuals, and the plural of anecdote is not data!
I’ve got a Rott/Husky X who has a very high prey drive and strong herding instinct (Rottweilers were cattle dogs). We trained her around the horses as a puppy, put 2 yrs obedience on her, have done herding with her. She’ll still try to chase skunks and squirrels, but her livestock manners are excellent. She will herd loose chickens or goats back to you, calls off livestock (even when in full bolt at a herd of loose goats), and knows to stay OUT of the pasture when the horses are there. She’s also trustworthy with cats, having grown up with 5 of them. However, I would NEVER generalize from this to say that all rotts or huskies or crosses are similar, because it’s just not true. We were lucky that her temperament and training have made her trustworthy around stock. Many other dogs of this crossbreed aren’t.
I grew up in cattle and horse country. Everyone had a heeler. Everyone. They were the cow-dogs of choice for several reasons. Highly intelligent and can be trained if you do it right. We were free-range cattle country so a cowboy could ride through it and send the dogs out, the dogs come back with the cows.
I was raised with one, we named her “Nippy” because she would nip at the heels of my brother and I as we ran through the house. Only inside the house, she didn’t think it appropriate I guess. We had four horses and the dogs slept outside, the heeler, heeler mix, and pit bull (not the chihuahua because owls tried to take her) and they would protect the horses from other dogs. I took them on each trail ride because we had a HUGE stray dog problem – it was in the papers for a while because stray dogs were killing cows, especially pregnant ones, killing horses, attacking children. Imagine you’re riding your horse and a pack of dogs runs you down, kills your horse and mauls you – happened to a girl that lived near me. So I rode with the three dogs. Our dogs would keep the others away, and if one of the free range bulls decided I was riding too close they would remind him that it was free range. Oddly enough when we got the Pit bull, no more dogs approached us. He was a very smelly dog though, so I think it was because of that.
How low can you go??? Oh, and this is not limbo we’re playing… it’s called REAL LIFE!
So if she is successful in this “fundraiser” (which I doubt she will), this means that all this time, I could’ve had people pay for my horses infections, cuts, scrapes and for knocking their heads!?!?!?
If you took on a horse honey, it’s your duty to pay and care for them like they were your children. I have 4 horses, one blind mare that knocks her head all the time (I wonder why!? *sarcasm*), one three year old that is being ground trained right now and 2 older standardbred rescues (RESCUES!!! Can I have money please!??? *Sarcasm!*) that I got when they were only skin and bones and needed immediate, expensive care. I did it all by myself! HOORAY FOR ME! Just like anybody else that has horses, rescues or foals.
Are you by any chance interested in re-homing the STBs? I am very casually considering a 2nd horse and love STBs. I am not actively looking for a 2nd horse per se, but kind of waiting for just the right horse to come along. I am in NorCal.
I keep a few thousand dollars saved in my bank account just incase I ever lost my job and needed some time to find a new one. I am younger than this person on Facebook. Good grief it’s not rocket science.
That’s just basic economic sense, what all the financial advisors will tell you: pay OFF the credit cards, and work to keep at least three months’ worth of expense money in the bank. It’s a tough economy and our animals still need to be fed, housed, and their needs taken care of even if we’re in between jobs.
That this girl can’t even afford very basic vet care– a look at a wound and a pregnancy check– tells me she can’t afford to own one horse, let alone two. She sounds stupid and entitled, but since her FB page is down now, I’m betting she may have learned a little bit, thanks to Fugly.
She “started talking to the property owners [sic] son on how Gypsy was doing.” Hmmm… Her opening sentences and the ongoing story make it sound like she doesn’t check on her horse too often or care enough to make sure her horse is in a relatively controlled environment with responsible & qualified property owners.
My husband has asked me to wait until our car is paid off before I start looking for a horse to lease. That will be next May. I don’t want to wait that long, so please send me money to pay off our Mazda hatchback NOW. We got the shortest loan possible, in order to pay it off quickly, so send a lot of money, OK? thx.
Still confused about the one and half balls–don’t recall that phenomenon mentioned in my horse care books….
Yes, imagine if this whole thing was for a luxury car.
““Hello my name is Elizabeth Randall and i am trying to do a fundraiser for my Porche Gypsy Rose. On the 3rd of July i went out to check on my car before the 4th of July and started talking to the garage owners son on how my Porche was doing, I asked if she had any dents or anything of that type and he said “yeah she had a dent on her hoodâ€. So I told him “ok well I am gonna go get her and check on her†and he said “…okâ€. When I went and drove her in and brought her into the garage to check her hood the dent looked really bad it had oxidized some and looked like it had a lot of dirt in it.”
…
“The bill to have the mechanic out to give me an estimate and seal the dent was not cheap. My porsche has a long road ahead of it and I dont have the money for all the mechanic bills, and gas, and insurance, and supplies, and diagnostics thats gonna need to be done and any type of damage that might need immediate care, as I lost my job a week a go. So any and all donations would be greatly appreciated you can paypal me a donation to ciscodottymomo@gmail.com mark it as ‘car bill’.â€
Pretty ludicrous. I mean, yes, a living animal is certainly more of a priority than a vehicle, but asking strangers to pay for your hobby is just….no.
Push, you don’t happen to live in middle GA do you? Because I’m actively seeking someone to ride one of my horses, for *FREE* while I continue to pay all the feed and vet bills…
No, I live in Southern California. If I were close to you, I would already be on your doorstep, helmet in hand ;>
She’ll never get a job as a grant writer, that’s for sure. Honey, PARAGRAPHS ARE YOUR FRIEND! Also, no one cares about stupid trifling details – “SoIpicked (sic) the scabs off lead her outside hosed it off for about 30 min then went and tied her back up so I could get some things to clean it with.”
My horse got a bad cut on her leg. Also she might be pregnant because I and the person who owns the property are irresponsible nitwits. Please send me money.
That’s all you need to say. Oh, and the answer is “NO!”
did you guys ever think that maybe she was told to do this? how about asking questions first before accusing her of things like this a accusation like this is huge. did you ever think of that?
as for the comment earlier and i quote it”Melissa says:
August 3, 2010 at 6:11 pm
My favorite part of her page is when someone said they would not be able to attend the fundraiser- this was their nice way of saying I am not going to give you money – and she came back with “it’s an ONLINE thing!â€
Looks like the entitlement complex does apply to those over 20.
Reply ”
did you ever think that maybe she didn’t know that i mean come on guy give her a break.
as for the one and a half gelding did you read her story right i quote “there was a Palomino that we were told was about a 1 1/2 gelding. During the time that he was there he had a ball half drop and was potent.” they didn’t know he wasn’t a gelding they were told he was.
I’m told to do a lot of things I don’t do. If someone told her to jump off a cliff would she do that too?
Common sense tells you that the Internet shouldn’t have to pay YOUR vet bills on YOUR horse.
Ana. I try not to be snarky, but do you even realize that your explanation makes as little or less sense than Elizabeth’s original post? I can’t read your typing. You have an incoherence problem, or more specifically, you have a coherence problem. You seem to manage incoherence just fine. I used to read middle school second language learners’ papers for a living. Yours is very poor. Find someone who can help you explain what you are trying to say, and then repost with corrections made. Otherwise, we just don’t understand what you are saying.
Case in point: We are horse people here. None of us, so far, have ever heard of a one and one half gelding. The term is unknown to us. It’s not a real term. It’s like Snarfblat.
Excuse me, but Snarfblat IS a real equine term.
It’s when you sneak medicine into your horse’s dinner, and he begins to SNARF it down. Then he discovers the medicine and BLAT spits it out and glares at you. I just witnessed this last night, so I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.
LOL! LOL! LOL!
that cracked me up, lol.
That made my day!!!
ROFL! Thank you– I never realized the technical use of the term.
This is the best thing I have seen all day! Thank you!
I’m sorry, is she 12 or is she 25? Because last time I checked, responsible adults could not be forced into writing incoherent pleas for money on Facebook for situations they should be able to take care of themselves.
And, sorry, asking someone if they can read/if they did read that massive paragraph is rude. Whyyy would you reply ‘did you read?’ to someone you’re begging for money?
This is just another case of “It’s not my fauuuult!”
So, I have a facebook page and it’s not my fauuult that my van blew up so will someone please send me two thousand dollars to pay for it coz I have twenty horses to feed and I can’t afford to pay for the van and I want the money…..so there!
(And I am not joking about the horses, btw, but, of course, I shall not only find the wherewithal to pay for the van but I shall continue to feed the horses.)
And terminate that poor mares pregnancy, forgodssake, she obviously thinks she will make money out of the foal, but why did the Vet not suggest it?
Also, what responsible owner just accepts ‘oh, he’s a gelding, more or less?’, shrugs, and pastures their mare in the same pasture without checking first?
She obviously is not out there all too often, so I seriously doubt she was serious about checking to make sure this stallion was gelded before tossing her mare in with him. And who gives back a horse because he isn’t a gelding after keeping him for some time? GELD THE HORSE! How hard is that? What, giving him back as a stallion absolves you of any responsibility?
It’s hard to actually “accuse” people of anything or feel the need to ask questions when they go ahead and just write all the gory embarrassing details up for you on a public Facebook event listing. When you ask strangers for money, you also invite strangers to comment — that is the risk you take. Anyone who thinks there are any answers to further questions that don’t make this situation look even worse, raise your hand. Anybody?
I can’t imagine any, but I’m a cynical adult, so my first assumption is not that a 25-year-old woman’s scheming stepmother forced her to own a horse in a less than ideal situation without checking on it often enough, then waved her magic wand of supreme evil so that the 1 1/2 gelding’s ball dropped and the mare’s pregnancy could distract our beleaguered heroine from her job search.
Once you’re over 18, you have to take responsibility for the things you say and do. Sucks to be an adult, but that’s how it is. It’s called accountability.
Told by whom? She’s 25 years old – it’s not like she’s 9 and her mom told her to go build a lemonade stand (which, come to think of it, would be a far better way to raise funds. At least she’d be doing something to earn it). At 25 and being responsible for the care of a horse, I would hope she had the sense to make up her own mind.
“as for the one and a half gelding did you read her story right i quote “there was a Palomino that we were told was about a 1 1/2 gelding. During the time that he was there he had a ball half drop and was potent.†they didn’t know he wasn’t a gelding they were told he was.”
If I was told that a horse was a “1 1/2 gelding,” I would not assume it was a gelding. I would assume that (1) whoever told me that was a moron and (2) they were talking about a crypt. I would then have a vet check the thing (except I’d have already had a vet check it when I bought it – yet another red flag).
She can’t afford a vet, she can’t afford board she has to pay for, she can’t afford anything but other people are supposed to subsidize her hobby. No. If I lost my job and couldn’t afford my horse, I’d have to sell my horse. It’s called life.
“She can’t afford a vet”… hell, she can’t even afford a bottle of hydrogen peroxide! *That’s* what immediately struck me, that she does not even have the wherewithal, KNOWING her horse has hurt its leg, to bring out basic first aid supplies.
Who the hell puts alcohol and peroxide on wounds anymore? I’d be willing to donate 420 towards getting her a clue. How about First Aid for Horses by Dr. Kellon?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0914327925/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0939049953&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1QA1WSBSM3GSNBNP07YT
Can’t say much about her vet either. Didn’t offer to pinch that foal knowing the owner couldn’t afford one or anything about foaling? Didn’t treat the wound or show her how to properly wrap a leg? You sure as shit don’t put a wound pad and then wrap the leg with vet wrap. Surprised her horse has a leg left.
Maybe she should have thought about *what could happen* if she lost her job before she decided she could own a horse. We all need to be prepared to have to make hard decisions, not whine and crybaby around on FB and ask people for handouts.
Your defense is so literacy-challenged, I have to ask: Elizabeth, is that you?
^^^Oh come on – of course it is! And she didn’t even try to fool anyone with disguises like punctuation, complete sentences or capitalizations!
You are sticking up for her? Seriously?
Did you ever think to use proper grammar and punctuation? If you are going to stick up for this train wreck the least you could do is use proper grammar and begin your sentences with capital letters…
Elizabeth, is that you?
They both write the same way. Hmm.
Mind-numbing details do not make your plea for money any more compelling.
In fact, the point that you need money for gas to drive out to take care of your horse makes me think you normally never go out there. Even if you get the money, are you prepared to do all the work foaling out a mare takes? What happens if she has a problem? Can you afford to pay for two horses next year?
Aborting the mare is more fair to your horse and her potential foal than going through with this.
One problem with cheap board (which I assume is the case here) is it’s like a cheap horse — people don’t value what they have. It’s a lot easier to leave a horse out in a field when you pay $150 a month than it is when you pay $450 a month. Cheap board gives a false sense of security. Sure, you can afford the board, but if anything happens, it’s begging on facebook.
Cheap board makes it easier to neglect your horse, only if you really don’t care about the horse to begin with. Sob story of my own, hubby lost job, we lost farm, had to place most of the horses. Able to keep three, but only with cheap board. Can’t afford the going rate of $350 per head, so found cheaper digs for them. Not ideal by any means, but all I’m really paying for is being allowe to keep them in someone else’s fenced space with water access. I feed them daily, wash & fill water troughs & buckets daily, etc. I do the work, and maintain the responsibility for my horses. Sure, I do miss the convenience of either having them at home, or at a full care place, but neither are an option if I want to keep them. The horses are cheap too, but you’ll never find them missing anything. Myself? Cable TV – nope (watch movies on an old TV); computer/internet at home – nope (get online at work during lunch); nice house – nope; jewelry, fancy clothes, accessories, anything name brand – nope; extra tack – sold. In fact, I’ve sold quite a bit of “stuff” to be able to finance the horses – and I don’t mean have to sell something every time I have a vet bill, I mean liquidate assets to pay off financed items to lower monthly expenses, so there’s left over to save in the event of a vet bill.
My point? It can be done, and done with no reduction in standard of care for the horse. No excuse whatsoever – especially since she has cheap board. If she can’t afford horse expenses even with cheap board (which should actually mean she should be taking an even more active role in her horse’s care), then she shouldn’t have a horse.
That said – I’d be happy to donate $20 to her for a shot of Lutalyse!
Agreed. I have three mares, one who was a nicely bred kinda rescue (booked in to be pts, in order to wean her foal), her daughter who I bred myself, and a wackadoodle old warmblood who I took on last November. I’d never be able to keep all three if I didn’t board at the cheapest farm in the area – £75 per month, per horse, for huge stalls and as much grazing land as I require, plus excellent hacking. It’s a farm, so there’s no manager as such – we pay the farmer, if we have a problem with the land or the stables, he sorts it, the rest of it, we sort out between ourselves. It makes it SO easy for me to give my girls the quality of care *I* want to give them – paddocks muck-picked daily, water troughs cleaned weekly, no restrictions on turnout.
But it also makes it easy for some of the other boarders to neglect their horses. We’ve got two young girls with a young, previously abused mare, a very young show pony, an ex racer, and a semi retired oldie. They have, in the past, neglected them through ignorance (no manager, so no-one to lay down the law) by failing to muck-pick regularly enough (in small paddocks) or feed enough hay during winter, check rugs during bad weather and so forth. Fortunately, they are lovely girls who, now that they know we’re trying to help them learn and improve will come to me or one of the other more experienced girls on the yard with questions, and will pay attention when we offer advice. Now, their horses are all healthy, well cared for, and adored.
Sadly, we have another, older girl, who has a lovely TB mare who lives in a paddock with crap up to her knees, apart from when she breaks out through the plastic washing line used to separate her paddock, is barely ridden or even checked on. Her 19 year old owner can no longer find a farrier to tend her mare – according to her, she’s fallen out with them for flirting with her too much. According to them, she failed to pay. She’s behind on her rent, and the horse is often clearly lonely, and gets very agitated when other horses pass by – she has to be kept alone, not only because of the poo issue, but the fact that she hasn’t been wormed since she set foot on the yard. What drives everyone even crazier is the fact that her parents are very well off and pay her bills, and she frequently tells them that said bills are higher than they are in order to get more money to help fund her loser boyfriends alcohol consumption – but when one of the nice young girls offered to muck pick for a tenner a week, she flew off the handle insisting she could care for her own horse.
And of course, our board is cheap, because as the farmer himself says, he has nothing to offer other than his land, and therefore, there’s also no-one who can actively tell her to shape up or ship out. Fortunately the other people we’ve had pass through with this mentality have taken the shaping up option nine times out of ten
Well, that could certainly be true. Brings to mind that Austin Lounge Lizards song: “Life is hard, and life is hardest when you’re dumb.”
I am in my forties, and finally learned something that has puzzled me all my life. I thought NO ONE understood stupid, incoherent people. That we just tolerated them. From ana36′s comment, I see that stupid people have a secret language, just like twins. They share it amongst each other, and don’t give a damn if the rest of us hear only babble. In fact, they don’t even know the rest of us can’t understand the babble.
Smacking hand on forehead. Epiphany: why stupid boss gave raise to even stupider employee. Why working harder and smarter made things worse. I DIDN’T KNOW THE SECRET TWIN LANGUAGE OF STOOPID.
Maybe my life will come together now. Thank you, ana36. By the way dear, I think your name is actually spelled “Anna.”
Oh god, why am I even trying?
Yo, Ana. u shure ur name not Elizabeth?
Long time lurker, first time poster.
So her wall says she just got out of the hospital at 3:15am from “heat exhaustion and a slew of other things”. What was she exhausted from? Sitting on her ass playing farmville? Didn’t know it was that much work harvesting virtual crops while *neighbors* give you little cartoon sheep and shit. Poor baby. I’m gonna paypal her 1 million US dollars right now. She really deserves it.
OT but important
Massive breeder dump of REALLY REALLY REALLY nice broodmares at Enumclaw.
http://auctionhorses.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=auctionhorses
Daughters of Barlink Macho Man, granddaughter of Smooth Town, etc. Some aren’t great but some are knockouts.
Nice black daughter of Sonny Dee Bar that needs to be euthed – bad DSLD. Hate to see such a nice mare ship.
Please check it out. You CAN buy them for breeding without restriction, and some are definitely good enough for that and have produced winners. Of course, do not do any such thing if you can’t afford it or are some crappy BYB or you’ll end up on my blog! But if you have a responsible, quality breeding program – there are some mares nice enough there.
Well we all should have known how THIS was going to end.
I had a crappy birthday last week, so I bought myself a present. It has been 22 months since the last Old Mare rescued and I was due.
At least I get well bred Old Mares. I’ve previously had daughters of Obvious Conclusion and Beaus My Daddy, and this one is by Barlink Macho Man.
You sure are a sucker for old red mares, Cathy! She’s just lovely. Tell us all about her, okay? I have too many to adopt or rescue right now, so I’m down to living vicariously through others.
Nice. I am so glad I can’t go down to these auctions, we have been second horse shopping for MONTHS. the Selection up here is terrible, and no rescues will place out of state
I would have filled the trailer and brought it up to help out a few I know that are looking for a good Pony Clubber.
What a lucky ol’ gal!
Aww…. Poor baby got offended, left her event, deleted all her posts and hid her facebook profile……..
Well, it sounds like what happened with the pregnancy was the stupid property owners not realizing that a crypt can still drop at any time under, oh, 10…and then he’s fertile. Crypts should not be turned out with mares. (I’ve seen it done, but A. The owner was an idiot and B. The crypt concerned was about 40 years old and had arthritic hocks…and the mare was two hands taller…so she probably reckoned he couldn’t try. I dunno, though).
The property owner should man up and pay…for the abortion.
Any bets we’ll see the foal on craigslist when he doesn’t come out buckskin?
She might be one of those people who doesn’t believe in abortion even in animals or in spaying.
The situation is not entirely her fault…and in her case, I WOULD demand that the owner of the crypt pay for a termination and move my horse.
Well, really. She should have moved her horse the second she found out she was turned out with a crypt.
“when it doesn’t come out buckskin”
I beg to differ. if it’s not a purty kolor, it’ll be on cragislist for $50 or $100 with some probably fictional, definitely misspelled, sob story.
If it does come out buckskin it will still be on craigslist, but she’ll think it’s worth at least twice as much money.
piggly y dont you stop accusing and instead ask her what’s going on she’d probably tell ya. btw im trying to look at the positive side of this at least she’s trying to get help for the mare.
OK, Elizabeth, it’s REALLY HILARIOUS that you made a screen name and are pretending to be someone else defending you WITH YOUR SAME E-MAIL ADDRESS!
DOH!
OMG Cathy, I read her post, thought to myself, “that’s the nitwit who owns the horse” then read your post. Totally snorked my drink all over my desk!!! SCORE!!!
Why is it that the idiots chronicled on this blog, feel compelled to make even bigger fools of themselves by coming on here, pretending to be someone else, and trying to defend themselves? That NEVER WORKS.
Bwahahahahahaha! I suspected that was probably her but the lack of literacy on the internet is such that I thought it just might be a similarly writing-challenged friend.
God, you can’t make this shit up!
“God, you can’t make this shit up!”
Isn’t that the truth in a nutshell?! Maybe we can all donate to an internet literacy project in her honor.
Internet comprehension fail!
That made me lol. For real.
Honey I can tell from your grammar that its you….I don’t even need to see your email
You may as well not even try to defend your lame ass here cause it wont work. You did a stupid stupid stupid thing and got caught by the fugs and you know it, so carry your sob story to the local walmart and fill out an application and get a job. No one is going to pay for your stupidity.
OT – Actually, at my local Walmart, there are women who camp out at the entrance with signs, panhandling to feed their “children”. I kid you not. Still can’t understand why anyone would think your average Walmart shopper has money to spare to hand over to the local tweakers.
Wow really?? I dont think our walmart would allow that because it faces a target thats inside a higher end mall. I live in a resort area so the cops dont allow people to sit at intersections with signs of any kind…
Maybe princess should put on her best hobo clothes and sit on the nearest intersection with a can. she’d have better luck than shes having on facebook!!
piggly? You talking to me bitch? You are the dumbass sitting there on failbook with 100 farmville posts covering your damn wall that are peppered with you whining about needing money for a poor injured mare knocked up by one-nutted stallion when you don’t even have a FUCKING JOB to support your sorry self. You are no better than a crackhead on the street panhandling for a fix IMO. And if you think you have any right to keep this mare or her poor bastard-child foal your sense of self entitlement is totally whack. Get a job loser. You got no business whatsoever attacking myself or anyone else on here that is out there holding down a job and paying for their horses the way it should be done-out of their own damn pocket. You fail at life.
To everyone else-I apologize for my potty mouth.
And I’d just like to add one more thing- If the way people are treating you is *snif snif* hurting your wittle feewings well you need to just chalk that up as the price you pay for being a goddamn cyber-bum. Act like a fucking loser and people will treat like one. Take some pride in your sorry-ass self and quit acting like a damn fool.
Again, sorry for my potty mouth. Please don’t kick me off:)?
Uh, you don’t really get kicked off this blog for being a potty mouth
That would be a tad bit hypocritical!
Oh wow, that was great. One of the best comments in a long time.
Elisabeth, you got e-spanked. Cover your butt and limp off. You have a pretty mare. Too bad you are an idiot, hopefully her leg heals up or you’ll never win another pony express. I don’t know how you won that one. Your team mate sucked and your mare had a late start. Must have been really weak competition.
You are doing nothing to promote your breed or protect your mare. You should be ashamed.
piggly you kick ass! That was awesome!
first off so what if my screen name is ana36 what i cant try and protect myself. second i did ask the vet to and he said there’s more risk to inject her than there is to let her have it. i never expected having a foal from this horse or any for that matter yes it would have been nice IF i wanted to breed her to breed her to a purebred morgan but i knew i didn’t have the money for it so i never did. as for her name her full name is Gypsy Rose nothing before it so it’s not the horse your thinking it is jennifer. and second off you guys have no clue what i do im not on the computer 24/7 and if you pay attention to those farmville things well there not from me. there from friends that post that shit on my wall. im sorry but i do have a life i go to a outpatient program in the day and look for a job online at night. as for my horse she lives about half an hour from me and since i go to the outpatient program i dont have the cash flow to go over there every day so i try to get out there once a week at the very least. there is only one spot of barbwire on that property all the rest is electric fencing. as for the alcohol and peroxide comments i had no idea. i was doing what i was told as i grew up learning horses, i mean seriously what else could i have used to clean the wound if not those 2?
Your vet isn’t very competent if he said there’s more risk to give her Lutalyse than to let her have it. I would try another vet. I’ll tell you what, there’s way more risk to your already-challenged finances to let her have it! It is going to eat, you know. And need the vet. And need the farrier.
One spot of barbwire is one too many. And you are going to have a FOAL on this property??? You might as well suck it up and abort it now because the poor thing is going to wind up dead anyway at this rate. You don’t even know how to clean a wound – horses are not so different from people. Did you ever think to look at the bottle and see if the substances you’ve been using are OK for large open wounds? Rubbing alcohol and peroxide are for the treatment of MINOR cuts and wounds, not large open injuries. Here is some help: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=cleaning+horse+wounds
I don’t even own a horse yet; I consider myself very lucky to have friends who ride and who are teaching me, because I love horses and I think riding is just about the most awesome thing in the world. So until I can get to a place in my life where I can support myself and an animal, I spend my time reading and learning and watching videos and EDUCATING myself on what horses need and what I need to be ready to do. It’s not *that* hard to put the welfare of another ahead of your own selfish desires and pride. Give it a try. Gypsy Rose seems like a really sweet horse and I think she deserves a lot better than what you are giving her right now.
Oh no! Oh no! I got duped by a stoopid person again. It wasn’t twins, it was multiple personalities. Stoopid ones.
What is this outpatient day program thing? Does it cure stoopid, or am I a dreamer?
My horses live a half hour away from me, and yet I somehow manage to make it out there every day. Heck, they’re actually an hour away from my college (my house is in the middle), and I attend full-time, and yet I still make it to the barn every day. Sometimes twice a day if there’s an issue that I need to check on AM and PM. When I was working full-time AND going to school, I still made it to the barn every day. Yeah, I’d have some late nights, but my stalls got cleaned.
I fail to see how half an hour is a big deal. And don’t whine to me about gas prices, either. I drive a 16-year-old, gas-guzzling Z-28 Camaro that gets about 14 miles to the gallon (16 if it’s all highway and I’m REALLY lucky!)
oh yeah, emergency treatment for large wounds (if you’re going to be too cheap to call the vet, at least be well-versed in 1st Aid):
1.) Clip all the hairs around the wound and flush out debris. Use clean water or saline solution. Irrigate the heck out of it until it’s clean. Don’t scrub. Don’t touch. Just let the lavage do it’s thing.
2.) Apply a diluted surgical scrub (Betadine). This provides all of the antibacterial action you need. And I mean diluted. Commercial Betadine is usually a 10% solution, dilute it down more. Like a 1/100 ratio.
3.) Inspect clean wound closely and remove any remaining debris with tweezers. If there is dead tissue, you’ll have to call the vet anyway and have them remove it, so the rest of this is pointless, but assuming that there is no dead tissue… Since you have a sterile wound at this point, make sure your tweezers are sterile, too. And wear clean gloves. These should all be items in your regular 1st Aid Kit.
4.) Bandage. With a STERILE, CLEAN bandage. That means that it comes in it’s own individual wrapper. Put clean, sterile gloves on before you open it. Check that bandage TWICE A DAY, EVERY DAY for any issues (swelling, drainage, etc). Change bandage at least every other day.
5.) Give horse tetanus shot. If she has already been vaccinated, give her a booster. If not, give both tetanus shots (toxoid and antitoxin) and then give a booster again 4 weeks later. Horses are more prone to tetanus than most other critters.
6.) Get thee to Amazon.com and order a basic horse First Aid book. Read it cover to cover. Memorize it, and keep it at the barn. Don’t be that person who says, “I gave my horse massive amounts of proud flesh and tissue damage because my great uncle’s best friend’s cousin’s girlfriend TOLD me to use Hydrogen Peroxide or rubbing alcohol and I never thought to look into it myself.” (BTW, both hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol in large amounts are toxic to raw tissue.)
This is all stuff that you probably should have learned, you know, BEFORE you got a horse. And, really, you have no business bringing a foal into this world. What are you going to do if there are foaling complications (I’m assuming you wont have the vet present, nor will you board at a breeding farm or similar facility with a knowledgeable staff)? What do you do if the foal is breech? What do you do if the foal isn’t breathing? What do you do if the mare has been having contractions for hours but no foal is appearing? What do you do if the foal can’t stand up? What if the mare isn’t producing milk?
Think about it.
To clean a wound, try good, old fashioned FREE clean water, preferably warm.
You cannot clean a wound with alcohol, it will seal it, not cleanse it, same with peroxide.
You needed to put clean water on it, then a poultice dressing overnight, and then sit back and look at the amount of gunk you get out!
Even if you did that now, it would help.
If your Vet said that, about the termination, and I do not believe he did, he is an idiot and needs striking off!
There is no risk at thirty days, there is not a HUGE risk now, although I would be inclined to get someone to “pinch” it out, not inject now.
See, Honey, the trouble is you are talking to people who actually know what they are talking about, and to say stupid rubbish like ” the Vet said” just does not wash, and neither does crap like ” what else could I use?”, as we can all answer those questions.
It sounds like you need to just sell the horse and wait to buy another one until you are financially stable and have better knowledge of how to take care of one or can board at a place with more better barn manager.
Of course you can try and defend yourself, its a free country and no one said you couldn’t. BUT when you come on here and speak in the third person as if you’re someone else…then we can call you out for the idiot that you’ve proven yourself to be.
Get a job like the rest of us responsible horse owners.
Ana36 aka Elizabeth Randall aka Biggest FAIL I’ve seen in a LONG damn time:
1. Screw you and your irresponsible panhandling ass and the horse you rode in on (oops- the one-nutted palomino took care of that one! Poor mare)
2. Your vet’s a moron if he told you that. Who is your vet anyway? Cuzin Billy-Joe Bob’s Basement Bargain Big Animal Fixer/People Tooth Remover and Stump Removal? Wouldn’t surprise me.
3. Nobody gives a rat’s ass what your mare’s full name is. What we do care about the is the fact you feel the need to let her have this bastard foal and think it’s perfectly acceptable to beg for money to make it happen. I’d have more respect for you if you were hooking it on Fifth and Vine. At least you’d be earning your money. And don’t try to make anyone believe you aren’t secretly happy about this. If you aren’t you never would have let the situation happen in the first place. You’re probably hoping it’s a yeller stud colt. PUKE. If you actually believe that shit you posted you are quite possibly the dumbest fucking person ever to own a horse. One-half gelding? Seriously? I mean seriously? Are you that fucking stupid? Seriously? Do you really think anyone else is that stupid? Seriously? Did you ever say that out loud to anyone? If so, how did you not get laughed out of the fucking room? Seriously! Oh wait…maybe that’s how Dr. Cuzin Billy-Joe Bob explained a cryptorchid to you…all makes sense now. Damn. No it doesn’t. I can’t even rationalize this any way I try.
4.I don’t give a shit if you only log onto failbook and farmloser once while you are unemployed and begging for money. It’s one more time than you should while you’re unemployed, racking up bills you can’t pay and begging for money.
5. I’ll leave the outpatient program alone. That’s just too damn easy…too damn easy. Okay, I lied. I’m gonna guess it’s for one or several of your 15,687 *disabilities* that all stem from YOUR DAMN LAZINESS! I mean, why else do you go on vacation for a week leaving an injured, pregnant horse unattended (don’t say you didn’t) when your sorry ass should have been at home taking care of her and pounding the pavement looking for a damn job in between (don’t say you shouldn’t have). I think selfishness factors in here too. And being an ignorant fool. Maybe you need an outpatient program for that too. And your split personality disorder. Here’s a hint: Having some damn self-respect, taking responsibility for your life and not acting like a damn fool will go a long way towards your mental health.
6. If you’re gonna post on here trying to fool everyone into thinking someone was actually sticking up for you make an attempt to make your alter look literate. If you posted something that didn’t look like it was typed by a rabid spider monkey smoking crack cocaine we MIGHT have been fooled. If you really were just trying to protect yourself- from what? If we could reach through the computer inter-webz screen and bitch-slap your ass you would already be toothless. We can’t do that. And don’t flatter yourself sweetie- no one cares enough about you to track you down. You’re just another joke on the internet. And I think the fact that not one damn person DID try to stick up for your foolishness says a lot. I hope it teaches you a damn life lesson too.
7. Barb wire? I hope you choke on it. Wonder if that is what your poor mare shredded her leg on. All the time you spent posting on here you could have fixed that barb wire. Instead you sit on the computer fighting with random strangers like me. I’m allowed to come on here and act like jackass because my horses are injury-free, happy, grazing behind good fencing and not knocked up by old yeller one-nut.
8. You learned from idiots. And if you had a DAMN JOB you could afford to go out and buy some suitable wound medication. That’s the kinda shit you keep on-hand for emergencies, like when your mare shreds her leg on shitty fencing.
9. You don’t get a job responding to scam posts on the internet and craigslist. You go out and put in applications. And submit resumes. Probably applications in your case. To Taco fucking Bell, you might fit in there. Maybe not. You might need to know how to spell taco.
10. Screw you again. Get that mare injected and pinched, and while you’re at it do society a favor and have Cuzin Billy-Joe Bob tie your fucking tubes before another mistake is made, one that I suspect will further drain our welfare system for the next 18 years.
FAIL!!!!!!!
Seriously , I dont think I have gone a week without a job . If I lost my job, I would spend the first day fixing up my resume, and the next handing it out to every store , office , business I could find , then on the third day making some follow up calls. Girlfriend , its not that hard, get off your butt and put your brain to work.
This girl gives me a fantastic idea.
Guys, I PROMISE I will be a really awesome and responsible horse owner, but unfortunately I am still in college and while I did have some money saved up for a “rainy day”, I was laid off last year and now my funds are rapidly dwindling.
If you could just donate to my college fund, I promise I will graduate and make gazillions of dollars and then I can finally buy the horse of my dreams!!!!! Also if you could actually donate more than my tuition costs, I could pay off my loans without having to look for a job first. It’s a win-win, right???
Lots of things to say here. First, I’m also a member of that “abused” generation and like the rest of us from that era, paid my own way through life. Problem is, our generation are the ones responsible for raising these entitled brats. So what the heck happened here? We became the world’s worst parents, but how?? Was there a tax on backbones some time in the last 50 years?
Second, it does sound as if this girl has some psych issues. She mentions panic attacks on her FB page, and excuses her begging by saying if we knew her circumstances we wouldn’t be so harsh. That speaks volumes. As a “consumer” of mental health services myself, I am well aware how disabling these problems can be, and I do what I can to mitigate them so I can live some kind of normal life — meds, therapy, whatever it takes. My goal is to stay OFF disability and continue working to the best of my ability, continue to support my household and have a meaningful life.
If her symptoms are disabling enough that she can’t hold down a job, she needs to get hooked up with the public services in her area to get the help she needs, whether it’s disability payments from social security, state medical benefits, social workers who can refer her to mental health programs, state medicaid and so on. Early intervention can do a lot to help people maintain an independent life and support themselves.
None of this excuses what she’s doing, but at this point I wonder if she even has the ability to recognize how wrong this whole scenario is becoming? One thing I have learned from my own experience with craziness is that when you’re in the worst of it nothing makes sense anyway, and you do what you think you have to do to survive, however harmful it might be to yourself and others.
I have a feeling this is how a lot of Fugly’s favorite “rescue” trainwrecks get started. Someone with somatic issues related to an underlying mental health disorder gets into the “you have to help me” mindset, has a little positive reinforcement, and then feels empowered to “help” even more animals until it snowballs into yet another dysfunctional “rescue” situation.
I hope someone close to her can intervene and get her the kind of medical / psych help and support that will help her make the best of what is in fact a chronic, lifelong illness. We aren’t squeamish about things like diabetes, lupus, even AIDS any more, and mental illness is no less real, no less disabling than any other chronic disease.
“I have a feeling this is how a lot of Fugly’s favorite “rescue†trainwrecks get started. Someone with somatic issues related to an underlying mental health disorder gets into the “you have to help me†mindset, has a little positive reinforcement, and then feels empowered to “help†even more animals until it snowballs into yet another dysfunctional “rescue†situation. ”
I completely agree with that statement. I think that is almost ALWAYS how it gets started!
I agree with your mental health analysis completely. There seem to be prevelent OCD, depressive & anxiety issues involved in hoarding situations with all types of animals. A rescuer can drive the denial train right into starvation & filth for the very animals they claim to want to help. The denial that comes with the dysfunction is mind boggling to me though. It’s almost like an anorexic seeing a fat body in the mirror. I can’t get my head around that part of it.
Many people are mentally ill to some extent at some point in their lives, it’s a stressful world and we all have our limits. Kudos to you as you seem to have missed the denial train! No shame in accepting your own reality for what it is. There is much mental health care to be had…maybe Elizabeth will read your comments and it will open a door for her. People still need to be responsible for their actions and begging for $ to all of cyberspace isn’t responsible!
Yeah, in this case I’d say “it takes one to know one”. I feel for her, many of her “status” messages and other things she’s posted to her FB page suggest that she’s feeling miserable and helpless.
Elizabeth, as one who has been through severe depression and all that goes with it (physical pain, sleep problems, anxiety, exhaustion, guilt, confusion, suicidal thoughts, self injury and more), I recognize much of what seems to be going on with you. As soon as you feel able, please get yourself to your family doctor and ask to be evaluated for depression. The treatments are out there, and with time and persistence they DO work — cognitive behavior therapy combined with the right psych meds will help you heal and learn to recognize and cope with the symptoms and behaviors that work against you. If cost is a problem, there are programs that can help you; your doctor can get you in touch with the right people.
It’s no fun to feel out of control. I can see from your pictures that you get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment from your own horses, and from helping other horses in need. You live in a nice house, and it looks like you have a nice family to help you through this. There’s no need for anxiety or depression to steal your happiness from you.
There is no shame in mental health issues. The brain is an organ just like any other in your body — skin, lungs, muscles, bones. When the brain isn’t feeling well, it affects your whole body, and it poisons your life. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You CAN get through this, and come out stronger and happier. You have your whole life ahead of you, and you deserve to feel happy and fulfilled.
But you have to take the first step, stop dodging responsibility and lying, and say “OK it’s my fault all this stuff happened, how do I fix it?”
Good point. But where is the line between ‘illness in need of treatment’ and ‘irresponsible person who needs a kick in the ass’? I suspect the two can overlap, as well. We can’t really know in this situation, or the great majority of other situations that hit this blog.
That said, I’m still okay with holding these people up as an example of how you should NOT behave. It’s inappropriate and (more importantly) hurts the animals, regardless of the cause. Maybe this will serve as a reality check for the owner and for the readers. There is a big disconnect between this girl’s idea of good behavior and the rest of the world’s idea of good behavior. She needs to figure out why that disconnect is there, and work to get it fixed. Mental illness doesn’t exempt you from work, it means you have to work at your sanity. (Been there… I’ll take a normal job over struggling with mental illness any day!) Good luck honey. You really do have to earn your own way.
The social problems are a combination of the physical disorder (depression) and a maladaptive way of dealing with it. You get into a feedback loop where you do or say something unusual, people react badly, you blame yourself and worsen the depression, get weirder, lather rinse repeat. If you’re really unlucky, you start believing that people are teaming up to kick you in the ass, and sometimes there’s a grain of truth there which makes it even harder to break out of the maladaption loop.
Medical treatment for mental illness is only part of it — it affects our relationships with people, which is why for long term recovery you really do need to learn and apply more appropriate social behaviors. I’m a long ways from completely figuring it out myself, but I’m in a lot better shape than I was at my worst ebb a couple years ago.
No, I don’t think people should cut me endless slack when I get weird. This is my illness, not theirs, and sick or not, I’m responsible for what I say and do. Kick me in the ass, and I’m liable to kick you right back. Ridicule me or shun me for being peculiar, I’ll do my best to say Eff You and ignore you the next time you need something from me. Show me a little compassion and understanding, and maybe I’ll recognize the problem and get some meaningful help.
You’re absolutely right, a lot of people with mental illnesses do end up acquiring animals.
I’ve been mentally ill since high school, but since the worst of my bouts were during that time they were brushed off as just attention-seeking. Even the bit with auditory hallucinations and spontaneously developing aphasia was dismissed with me just needing to concentrate and be more normal. I’ve had bouts up until now, age 28, and I have seeked help at different times to very poor outcomes. Constant misdiagnosis and a prevailing attitude that any female under the age of 25 is irrational anyway doesn’t help. I lost my job about a month ago due to the latest severe bout; the worst part is that a lot of the time I don’t know I’m sliding until I’m under. When my job was first looking shaky I was basically bullied into seeing another shrink and lo, she actually gave me a diagnosis and worked with me to get some suitable meds. The meds are helping a lot but I’m still not at work and I’ll probably be moving back in with my parents soon due to finances. For those who think I’m from the entitlement generation and I’m just being looked after, fuck you. I’ll be helping keep house- again- because my mother is physically sick- again- and I’ll also be helping them paint and clean prior to moving. So I will be singing for my supper.
When I was going under, I did a very stupid thing and something incredibly out of character for me: even though my cage was already full, even though I’d sworn that I’d never buy a pet store animal again, I went into my local store to buy litter and walked out with a pet rat. Big mistake. Huge. Because I don’t know if she’s been attacked, or dropped, or is just incredibly inbred, but I do know she is screw lose. Buying her went wildly against everything I believe in and every form of practicality. Pet store rats are often just little more than friendly feeders; they can be prone to severe health and behavioural problems. Buying them just promotes more sub-quality animals sold as pets. Even worse, my cage was already full and my does knew that there was something wrong with her and tried to kill her (admittedly, she started it by attacking them first). It took me two weeks to get her into the main cage. Even now there’s fur pulling.
Dropping $200 on having her ovaries yanked out helped (it isn’t always common practice to desex rats unless you keep both genders) but she’s still a nutjob. A cute nutjob, but a nutjob. A screwlose animal for a scewlose lady.
I will say this though: even though I’m having a hell of a time keeping it together from day to day, it’s my vermin that get me out of bed. My vermin that keep me to some semblance of schedule. My house may be trashed and I keep forgetting to eat properly, but their litter and bedding is still replaced daily, their cage cleaned weekly, and they still get their fruit and veg every night. If I end up back with my parents for any length of time my vermin will be the thing that gets me back out again so I can rescue them from their banishment from my father’s shed.
So yeh. Mental illness may be an underlying cause of most rescue trainwreaks, but my animals are getting me through my own personal trainwreak.
(And no, I haven’t bought any new rats since. Have spent hours trying to wrestle antibiotics down the throat of one of them for a persistent chest infection though, and nearly $1000 on vet bills for another. Was only supposed to be $350 but things, um, snowballed.
Cheap and easy pets my arse.)
It is an epidemic, I picked up this skinny horse with bad feet and now we are a rescue so send money. While I admit little Elizabeth is REALLY bad, I am sick to death of everyone claiming to be a rescue. If you do not have non-profit status with the state and you do not have the inspections required by your state ( in WI they have to have a class E license) THEN STOP ASKING FOR MONEY FROM THE PUBLIC!
This also goes for every hoarder claiming to be a rescue and keeping or picking up every stray dog and cat they find and putting it on Craig’s list with a fee to “rehome” the new word for selling a stray.
Here is a “rescue” that just popped up its new fancy website asking for money, when I emailed to ask about their non profit status etc, surprise no answer.
It didn’t take Elizabeth long to get the FB page down.
Thanks Fugs for outing her, I hope you catch some of the others who are taking money away from the rescues who have gone to the trouble of doing it the right way!
OMG she dumped rubbing alcohol on a open cut and the horse was okay with that? I know I have high expectations for mine, but I expect to be smacked by a horse for that… and her other option was peroxide. Holy shit.
Also, someone needs to smack a clue into the stable owner/manager. A crypt running with the mares? I’ve heard of proud cut geldings impregnating mares an intact colt would have no problem (owner probably did it to get testis to drop…which does work.)
By the way…I don’t have any vet bills but I’m sure I will. Any money coming my way? One of my horses sniffled today.
When I read that I was hoping the next sentence was going to be “Then she reached up and kicked the shit out of my face!”….But that never came!!! I dont know of any saints that wouldnt flinch if you poured alcohol on a wound that looked as nasty as that one did. At least peroxide doesnt burn as bad!
Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but does this mean the very thin Paint she has is also pregnant? *sigh* I hope I’m mistaken.
Elizabeth L. Randall ‎1500 obo. i had someone evaluate her this weekend and he said she’s worth more than that easily but im trying for 1500 i got bills to pay and a baby horse on the way. and i wont know till may but it may be a 2 for 1 deal.
I think thats what it means, God forbid she get that one checked by a vet too!
I think I need to go onto facebook and beg for money for my neighbors’ horses. Sad little things.
I do need some advice, though, about my neighbors. There are 8 people (parents and 6 kids) living in the house and none of them have jobs. Wait–that’s wrong. I think the 21 year old has a job at a local grocery store, but the rest of them don’t have jobs. They’re close to losing their house, they keep having yard sales to sell everything they own, they have a million reasons why they don’t have jobs or quit the ones they do get (i.e. one of the managers hurt my feelings…), and I’m not entirely sure how they’re able to afford to eat… but of course they have 6 horses. Last night, they came over and asked to buy a bale of hay, because of course they were completely out and weren’t able to get any. I give them kudos for: 1) asking for help, and 2) offering to pay, but of course I’m not going to ask them for money when I know they’re destitute. So I gave them a couple of bales that their horses desperately need, and I’m thinking of taking over 5-6 more tonight–some older hay that’s still good, but I don’t care of they have it.
Here’s the problem: At what point do I become the ennabler??? Obviously, these people shouldn’t have any horses, and I sure as heck can’t afford to care for my 5 and their 6 horses–and I really don’t want to. I’ve offered to trim their hooves for free, because they’re a disaster, but they haven’t taken me up on that. They claim that they’re selling all but two of the horses (which is at least a start), and that the 4 should be gone by Saturday (I don’t ask questions, but I have a hard time believing that their young, untrained and unhandled horses will be going to a good end… I’ve pondered taking a few of them, but then I wouldn’t be able to pay to care for my horses the way I like to, and I know my limits… wish they did). The really irritating thing is that they only recently (within the last 6 months) picked up the 4 horses they’re now trying to get rid of–got them for “free,” of course–and were going to make a mint breeding them (at least that plan is hopefully now thwarted).
So–I want to help the horses, but I don’t want these people to think I’m going to bail them out of their mess so they can continue to have horses. What to do??? (short of going on facebook and begging for them, of course).
Offer to help sell the horses. That’s what I’d do (and have done).
It’s a fine line. I know I’ve enabled in the past but I decided the ends justified the means…I know I saved some lives by doing it. It still isn’t a good idea but being told the horses don’t eat unless you buy the hay is pretty hard for most horse lovers to deal with.
fyi the page isn’t down it’s still up.
and your are mistaken cause she’s not thin maybe in that one picture but all her other paint pics she’s not thin in.
The paint is clearly underweight in the “for sale” album (and Elizabeth even mentions in the comments that the horse needs to put on some pounds), so it’s definitely not just the photo.
Off Topic!! But I need suggestions. I live in the very northwest part of Georgia and it’s HOT and HUMID! 110 with the heat index. I am doing electorlytes in their feed morning and night. I put a fan in their shed, there is absolutely no breeze here. It’s way too humid this week for a misting system as the water would just sit on them and boil. I haven’t been hosing their back, just their feet and, girth area and up in between their legs. I just want to see if there is any fresh ideas that I could try. One of my horses likes to stand in the sunniest spot and I have no way to block him up in the shade too. My work is being very understanding and letting me check on them throughout the day since I only live 5 minutes away…I just want to make sure I keep them as comfy as possible in this weather. They are northern horses and have never experienced anything like the heat we’ve been having this summer.
We’re down here in North Florida and, yes, it has been very hot and humid! Mine get both loose minerals and loose plain salt in their feed every morning. they are turned the pasture 24/7 all summer long because it is actually cooler than their stalls/paddocks. You can hose their backs and bellies, too, but you may want to scrape the excess water off to prevent skin irritation. It’s hard to groom them when the coats are grimy from sweat. Water is topped off every morning (100 gallon tanks). We have no fans or misting and our;s do fine. I think as long as you have shade, pasture, summer coats, supplemented loose minerals and salt, and a horse that can sweat (no anhydrosis), then you should be fine.
Mine also get time off from riding in this weather.
Have you tried using a 50/50 solution of water and rubbing alcohol? Spnge it on behind their ears, between front and rear legs, and the underside of the neck then scrape off the excess. The alcohol evaporates and cools them down better. (Using pure alcohol will dry out the skin). Another way is to float blocks of ice in the water trough or stock tank. You can also take a block of ice, put it in a large pan, and have a well secured fan blow across it for a bit of cooling breeze. You do need to make sure the fan can’t get knocked into the water though.
Oh boo-fucking-hoo! My fiance and I are moving to Kansas in the next couple of weeks, and we’re about to spend $950 on shipping, $350 on a vet check/Coggins/microchip, $50 in hay and feed, and $100 on shipping accessories (boots, buckets, etc.) for my mare because I refuse to sell her just because we’re moving. We’re about to spend a good chunk of money on top of what it’s going to cost us to move, but you don’t see me begging for other people to pay for MY responsibility. I gathered all that money by working my butt off and selling things that I didn’t need because her happiness and health is more important to me.
Why, WHY, -WHY- do people like this end up with animals?! **head-desk**
I figured our friend ana36 was really Elizabeth, so thanks for clearing that up, FHOTD!
Secondly, yes, she does now (as of a couple hours ago, at least on FB) have a car (2001 Mustang, which I find amusing) and the paint horse for sale, to “pay bills and such.” SO perhaps all this public vilification for Internet begging had an effect?
Well there you go. Selling a car is a MUCH more effective (and ethical) way of paying the bills.
Oh, hey lookit! Good behavior!
Hope it works out for her.
I think I know that mare, but I’m not certain. If her registered name is Broadway Gypsy Rose, then it’s her alright! I knew her as a foal – she was bred by my current trainer…she is a sweet mare (again, if it’s her). Gah – I’m happy to know that Elizabeth has kept her fed and that she seems to be loved, however I’m hoping to God that leg wound heals properly and am disgusted by the breeding. I’m not going to join the bandwagon and bash the heck out of Elizabeth, but I do hope she’s learned a lesson here. I with her the best – I hope she’s able to find a job, work hard and pay for this mistake.
*wish* I type to hastily at times
What is she (breeding wise)? I was trying to figure it out watching the speed videos. She looks almost gaited to me at times.
A Morgan
I was wondering about her breeding as well. She stands “parked out,” so I was thinking Saddlebred and/or Morgan blood? She IS cute, with a pretty head. And I’ll admit that she looks in good weight and well-groomed as well. So that’s certainly a big plus.
Alcohol directly on the wound, though…. OUCH. Definitely NOT good horsekeeping.
She’s a Morgan.
I was afraid of that, and my fears confirmed somewhere way down in her FaceBook posts. Elisabeth says she would have rather the mare had bred to a purebred Morgan. I hate when Morgans show up here.
There’s also a picture of the Pally Stud looking very much like a large 3 yr old grade horse. If someone told me he was a coming 2yr old I wouldn’t believe it.
According to info on her FB page, Gypsy Rose is a Morgan. She looks like a much loved, very sweet mare. Some improved horsemanship skills to go along with that love will do wonders for both mare and owner, I’m sure.
Ana/Elizabeth, It is never ok to use rubbing alcohol on a horse’s wound. It is entirely too harsh!
You need to learn more about horses before you can own one. You should have your mare
aborted {believe me, she won’t mind!} and then you should sell her and not own another
horse until you learn more about them and have a job. I’m not trying to be mean to you.
I’m trying to help you.
I see this a little differently. I think it is perfectly fine for someone to go where ever it is they have connections…Facebook, Craig’s list..outside a 7-11, and ask for money. They are being honest…’I want money, please give me some’. I won’t give you any…you have a right to ask, and I have a right to say ‘no’. Sounds fair to me. Nothing dishonet there.
Now, the scum who keeps sending me a ‘PayPal’ message (fake) telling me I need to update my account, and send them the info , or I will be ‘cut off’ is NOT nice, fair, or honest. Those guys shuold be disappeared.
Hopefully I am not stupid, or naive enough to believe the fake PayPal guys…because they are liars. Those asking for money are not liars. JMHO.
I agree with you, Vicky.
I think that although what Elizabeth is doing appears tactless to some, nobody really knows her situation. Nobody has walked in her shoes, nobody REALLY knows. Withthat said, the mare should never have been in the situation to have been bred. That’s bad. Should it be aborted? YES! Did Elizabeth handle the leg wound properly? Um, no. BUT – she could use this experience and grow from it. I don’t think calling her awful names and degrading her general character (when none of us know her) is the answer here. I agree with so many of the posts on Fugly. I think people who ignore, starve, abuse and kill their horses deserve to be harrassed and bullyed. Does Elizabeth? Heck no!
Don’t believe anyone said she was lying. She has pictures of the horse’s leg to prove the injury. I think the message is clear that it is “pathetic” to go e-begging on the Internet when you have other options such as……abort the oops foal and sell the horse, get a job, get two jobs, etc., etc.!
No, what angers me is that this mare is suffering while this chick walks around with her hand out– implicit in her behavior is that the mare is only going to get real correct vet attention if the money comes in.
Before you say I’m jumping to conclusions– take a good look at that injury. That isn’t a one day old injury. Not even a two day old injury. That is an old, festering, UGLY injury which at this point may never heal correctly.
One of my mares began to have yellow discharge from her eyes last week. It appeared on Tuesday. On Wednesday she was in the trailer, heading to the vet, where he checked her and prescribed ointments. Issue was resolved by Saturday (although of course I continued meds as directed). I did NOT make a Facebook page, and ask for money so I could get around to having a vet out to see her. Granted, I’m a professional, but even a stupid and new owner has GOT to be smart enough to look at that mare’s leg injury and pick up a phone stat. If you aren’t savvy enough to know to call a vet for that bad of an injury, how on earth are you planning on dealing with a pregnant mare and raising a foal?
I find it VERY funny that she goes to the ER for being stressed out without whining or creating a page on FB asking for money, yet her horse who has a serious injury…gets to sit and wait. No one likes paying vet bills, no one likes having a hurt horse. BUT IT IS PART OF HAVING A HORSE.
I consider myself lucky that one of our horses is normally accident free(**knocks on wood**) and that the other one is alright…. most of the time. We are not wealthy by any means, we do not have our parents supporting us, and we do struggle at times. But you bet your buttons that when we got our tax money back, it went straight into an account for nothing other than the horses. If we need it for hay its there, if one of them gets hurt it is there. We vowed not to touch it for us or any other reason than the horses(and dogs).
The two horses that we have now are our first, we were not raised with them, they are something we both wanted for our future children. But even *I* know not to put rubbing alcohol on a huge freaking wound. Are you kidding me. Next time you cut your self put rubbing alcohol in it and see how it feels. And how can she say she didn’t know any better?? You’re at a boarding facility, ever thought of ASKING SOMEONE?!?!?! I have a list of people I go through if anything goes wrong with the horses.
OH, and another thing about her facebook… Notice that she has enough money to have “facebook for mobile”? NICE. That is (through our company) 30 bucks a month per line. Sounds like she needs to get her priorities straight to me.
I really can’t understand this girl. My husband lost his job and it took him 6 months to find another one (one that only paid about half as good as the previous job). I have medical problems that keep me from working. We own 6 horses and during the time my husband was unemployed and then the 1.5 years it took him to find a job that paid really good money again, my horses still had vet care, hay, feed, and anything else they needed. So did my 3 kids, several dogs, cats, and various other pets. Why? Because we had money put aside to take of things like that. Right before he found a better paying job, I sat down with him and made the decision to give it another month before I found homes for my horses. It broke my heart to even think about it, but they deserved to be taken care of and I didn’t want them to suffer. I’m so thankful I didn’t have to go through with it, but I would have for their sake if things hadn’t worked out for us. I never asked anyone for help because it was my responsibility.
.
Not only does she have the second horse for sale she is now wondering how she can get disability because she says she has post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. I think going and getting a J O B will cure many of her mental issues.
I have all of the problems she is claiming to have: PTSD, anxiety, depression, and some other things. I cannot get a job because I rarely can leave the house. I get severe panic attacks that cause me to either hyperventilate or not breathe at different times. I forget where I am and what I was doing. I get lost in my own neighborhood where I have lived for my entire life. I can’t talk to people I don’t know. I don’t call anyone on the phone and rarely can answer it. I have flashbacks to trauma from my past that cause me to react in very strange ways and ways inappropriate to the situation. I would LOVE to be able to get a job, but it isn’t that simple, at least for me. I even had to quit school because of the problems I have, and I LOVE school.
Lat me clarify, I do not think that is an excuse. If you cannot get a job, you cannot have animals that require a lot of money! The responsible thing for Elizabeth to do would be to sell the horse or barring that, at least get the foal aborted.
Well, she had a job. She just lost it. We don’t know why.
Ah, true. It is possible that she had a.. for lack of a better word.. breakdown and is now unable to work, but in that sense she and I are different. I have never had a job for more than two weeks. Mind you I am only 18 so I suppose that is more normal. I am not just sitting doing nothing though – I have been in therapy and had a psychiatrist for years (my mental problems have all been early onset – how nice) and finally things seem to be looking up, so I will (hopefully) be able to get my GED and a job in the near future.
It doesn’t make sense to me, though, that she is wanting to be on disability AND keep the horses. If you’re on disability you have no income. Therefore you have no money for anything other than yourself. Meaning your horses will have no food. Or vet care.
She’s limiting her choices of new jobs now, since any hiring manager with a computer will Google applicants and find their facebook and myspace profiles. They find anything you ever posted, race times, show records, how much you bought you house for….anything.
Reminds me of the douche bag that I picked up a mare from. He wasnt panhandling, he was saving up money so he could feed the mare, meanwhile she was starving in his backyard! Even riding the mare with a BCS of 1. We have had her now for 7wks.
here is her photo album

If you cant afford the care now, then you cant afford horses. I know times can be tough, and are tough for many, but emergencies happen, and so does regular routine care!
While people are at it, how about this: I have an old mare on retirement, and a young one in training, but I’m not completely clicking with the younger one and want to buy a third. Don’t really want to sell the second, so can somebody please offer to pay my board???
Also, I’m getting married and I want to take a nice honeymoon, so can someone pay for that too? Or at least my last semester in college?
Every time Elizabeth mentions the ball dropping, I picture Times Square on New Year’s Eve! The Pally stally probably doesn’t have as many people cheering for his ball drop though.
OK SO…Since Im super lazy today (Im a SAHM and I refuse to pick up one more truck or necked barbie) I got on FB and looked up our friends name and had no luck actually finding her but was rather inspired by several other Elizabeth Randalls!! One of them just came back from a three weeks mission trip in africa, one was working in a soup kitchen for extra credit in her sociology class and she thought she was going to hate it but actually got to know the people she was serving and really has really enjoyed her time there. Then there is a 14 year old girl who, from what I could gather, wanted a new phone and she went out and put up flyers to babysit!!!
These are girls with the same name who are in the same age bracket (or younger) doing things worth while and getting things the right way. Im not saying that she shouldnt have a horse, Im just saying she needs to be busting her butt to have one. I know I did, and Im greatful that I did.
I think Elizabeth needs to get a good balling, and then have a “mechanism” shoved up her, so she can learn what the word “responsibility” means. What a disgusting pathetic ass.
Ana/Elizabeth:
I feel you pain. Really, I do. I am the proud owner of an “oops” foal out of a rescue mare. I had the option of aborting the fetus, but was able to figure out who the sire is, decided that he is actually a REALLY nice stallion, and my mare happens to be a REALLY nice, breeding-quality mare, so I decided to let it live (and subsequently have a really nice colt who I have big plans for). But I had a job. And I could afford it. If money was tight, it would have been aborted that week. Horses eat a lot. GROWING horses eat a lot more.
Fast forward to now. My colt is now a yearling, and the company that I worked for went under. So I lost my job. And yet I STILL didn’t go beg for money on the internet. A few months after that, I put my old gelding to sleep (vet bills that I paid on my own). Then all of my horses’ teeth got floated (more vet bills that I paid on my own). Then they got their shots. And their feet trimmed. How did I pay for all of that? Picking up whatever odd jobs I could find. I’m 26 years old and picked up babysitting gigs. I am okay with that.
I still babysit to help with my horse expenses and am living off of student loans, scholarships and grant money, since I opted to go back to college instead of back to minimum-wage jobs, but I have to pay THOSE off in the future, too. And yet, I STILL haven’t asked a single person to help me pay for my horses. Not one. Because I CHOOSE to own them. They are a luxury item that I have to make some pretty big sacrifices for, but no one is holding a gun to my head to MAKE me own horses. Therefore, I don’t ask other people to pay for them. They are MY responsibilty.
P.S.- I always keep a zero-balance credit card and a few hundred bucks in the bank that is reserved for horse emergencies ONLY. I have never NOT called the vet immediately when something is wrong with my horses. They receive the best of everything. But then, I’m also educated enough to know basic horse first aid, and that there are much better ways to clean a wound than dumping rubbing alcohol on them, you dimwit.
Oh, oh! Listen to my sob story!
I’m going to be going to school soon and still have to come up with money to pay for my bills but I want a horse that I know I can’t afford! So everyone should donate to me so I can spend money on buying myself a new horse then come back and beg for more money because I can’t afford to feed it!
And that’s why I haven’t bought a horse yet because I know damn well that I can’t afford it right now and I’m willing to wait until I can before I get one because, guess what? There will always be horses!
About her leaving to go on vacation, I can see it from both sides. Let me explain: my parents use to plan a trip to go to Disney World every so often and you had to make reservations early and pay it within a time limit (I don’t know what it is; Mom never told me). MAYBE that was the case with her; she spent quite a bit of money earlier making reservations and decided not to waste the money by staying. So I could somewhat understand that being the case and, had she left her horse with someone who was responsible and knew what they were doing around horses, I wouldn’t see a problem. Then again, if it was a trip that didn’t require excessively early reservations and didn’t cost a fortune, then I would say that she she is indeed in the wrong and should have stayed home with her horse.
As for the horse’s current condition…GET HER ABORTED! An unplanned pregnancy is bad enough, an unplanned pregnancy without any funds is even worse! There’s an entry here in FHOTD about how much it will cost you to breed/raise/care/train a newborn foal. And I bet she’s thinking that she could make a profit off the foal, which is why she may not want to abort it, but anyone who knows about breeding horses knows you don’t make a profit off a foal necessarily. If he had some amazing bloodlines with training and what-not, he MIGHT go for a fair bit of money…but you won’t make that by selling him as a weanling/yearling. And god forbid there’s any complications! If you can’t afford vet bills now, what’s going to happen when something dreadful goes wrong and its a life or death situation, not to mention everything that it will take to get mare/foal/whatever to recover from that situation.
And does anyone have any details on how that horse got such a bad injury? I’m thinking that fence in the picture is barbwire.
Oh, and apparently she’s claiming that its too late to abort the foal because her mare is “two months along”.
Do we have a time-line or something? Because this is what I’ve got so far…
July 3rd – Goes to visit horse and finds a nasty injury and learns that mare may have been exposed to a stallion.
July 21st – Mare gets treatment for injury and its confirmed the mare is pregnant (?)
So, if we assume she’s telling the truth, when was the mare exposed to the stallion? A month ago? If that’s the case…why the bloody hell are you visiting your horse once in a blue moon? When I had my horse for those few months, we went every day or at least every other day!
But, if she’s lying that her mare is two months along, then there is, indeed, still time to abort (right?). So why lie about it?
And PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong about anything!
Sure. You can definitely still abort them at 2 months.
Either that or it is an uncapped t-post injury. That was my other thought.

Elizabeth L. Randall i have post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety and depression and panic attacks how did you get on disability.”
OMG. I have PTSD, BPD, Depression and anxiety, AND my husband’s deployed AND I’m disabled due to military service AND I have two little kids AND I work full time. WTF is wrong with me?
So with all that crap is it okay for me to ask for money because my dog has heartworm? Would have been nice to know I could go begging for money around the time my dogs got into a couple porcupines and I had to spend $800 at the emergency vet. Fortunately (*knock on wood*) my two year old gelding hasn’t gotten himself into a lot of trouble where he is now!
See, this is why I own chihuahuas and not horses.
I make 10 an hour, and I can afford to cover just about everything that happens to them. Including the final exit.
That horse should have been sold when she first lost her job.
Dumbass.
Ok, I’m probably gonna get beat on this one. I haven’t seen any guys posting comments; but I’m putting my 2 cents in anyway.
I don’t know how many sob stories I’ve heard over Instant Messaging and Facebook from women I’ve known in the past looking for a financial hand out or bailout. Being a young “pretty” gal can get you a long ways without spending a dime… Free meals, free “vacation” trips, free shopping. Heck I’ve know guy’s dumb enough to buy women cars thinking it was going to get them somewhere. This is just another step, thanks to technology; broadcast our your sorrows and see who swoops in to save the day. Insert princess story here with man on white horse to save the day.
I’d be interested to see how many of her friends are men; but the link doesn’t work anymore.
The good point I see here is: so many other women standing up and saying “hey this isn’t right”! Puts a little more faith in my view of the world today.
Jeez why didn’t the vet just pinch it off when he was in there? Because she more than likely WANTS the foal. It might be palominer!
To the 20-somethings I have offended who know the business end of a manure fork and work to own / own to work – my apologies. I know there are some of you without the entitlement crown. But from what I”ve seen and heard, you are the minority. I sewed tobacco to afford to buy my first horse….didn’t have enough for a saddle so I rode bareback for a long time. Few friends could afford saddles in the 70′s, our parents were blue collar middle class and we were lucky they helped with board. I see friends buying 5 figure horses for their kid’s first horse, skipping the basic horse care knowledge so their little sweethearts can come home with the blues. No horse husbandry know-how at all, just equitation. But when little Susie gets bucked off, it’s always the horse’s fault!
I’m glad to hear there are some of you gritty (young) people out there. Set a precident for others! It’s a great feeling having healthy, happy animals, UTD on medical and farrier needs, and doing it on your own. I firmly believe we cherish most what we’ve worked hardest to achieve.
If it makes you feel any better we’re sick of seeing them too. I’m 20 have one horse that i pay for by waiting tables on the days when i don’t have classes. It’s hard but she’s UTD on shots, farrier, worming ect. It’s actually incredible rewarding to know that i’ve done it all myself! For the two months i didn’t have a job i woked 5 days a week at the barn she was at to pay off her boarding. I’ve been there to see the SOB help me out stories from people my age and it’s SO annoying. I work 30 hours a week, have a happy healthy horse, and i have a 3.8 GPA with only a semester left to finish my associates. It’s not easy but it CAN be done!
I’m only 14, and i do almost all of the care (paying for it) for my little mare. I earn $125 a month to pay for half or her board, then another $20 every 6-8 weeks for her trim,, and if i want anything extra, saddle pads, polos, bridles, showing, bits, anything, I pay for it. Showing, my parents will split me half and half, but everything else, I pay for. My parent’s will pay for shots though. I laugh as one of my friends just showed for 3 weeks at traverse city, and is currently at Hunter finals in KY. She has no idea what responsibility is, and I feel sorry for her, because when her parents stop paying for everything, she’s not going to know what to do.
Good for you! You will probably have horses all your life because you learned early on how much they cost and how important it is to budget your money. And I’ll bet you appreciate your mare a lot more than many kids your age because you know what it takes to keep her.
To the great parents and hard-working horse owners and lovers…Charlie Daniels said it well “I ain’t askin’ nobody for nothing, if I can’t get it on my own…!”
Good Girl! We need more people like you and more people like your parents!
Hubby and I both are financially well off enough for me to have my dreamy dressage horse that I want and him to have a horse and the kids to have a pony. Before my kids (turning three in a few weeks) ever get to have their first lead line lesson they are going to learn how to use a manure fork. Before they ever get their own pony there is going to be a period of “prove it” where they have to accomplish a list of chores daily in addition to schoolwork to show me that they can handle the responsibility of having a pony.
No snotty Dressage Queens, Hunter Queens or holier than thou riders in MY barn. And no panhandling on Facebook when you’re an idiot.
“I firmly believe we cherish most what we’ve worked hardest to achieve.”
Amen!
And no worries! We (or at least I) are/am not offended. It just never ceases to come up when a 20-someting gets featured here that all of us are suddenly deamed spoiled nimwits. It does get frustrating to read it time and time again, so I felt the urge to vent. Nothing personal
Really, no alcohol on a wound?
My gelding has terrible hock sores this year, and I have been putting alcohol on a gauze pad and cleaning them every few days or so. They are not from a lack of bedding, but incessant rolling in his dry lot paddock (he loves to roll!). And while he has a well bedded shelter, I suspect he sleeps out.
My vet used Betadine, then alcohol to clean a face cut, so I assumed it was OK. It obviously stings a little, but he lets me do it without much protest and I am trying to prevent infection. I am also applying ointment daily.
I ordered protective hock boots from Dover and they arrived today, but they look WAY too large, and I am probably going to have to return them and order another brand.
I was told not to use peroxide because it would result in more scarring? Is alcohol really a bad thing to be using?
Thats a good question….I always used peroxide for my horse’s hock sores, because thats what my instructor told me to do…but I would think alcohol would also be a good disinfectant. They both appear to sting. My horse reacts to the peroxide like it does anyway. I’ll have to ask a vet about that….
You might want to check with your vet and ask about using Novalsan instead. Both Betadine (“tamed ” iodine) and alcohol can injure cells by drying them out, they also sting. Chlorhexidane (sp) is what is used for a teat dip on milking cows and goats to prevent mastitis. My vet said I could use the solution to flush out Pigeon Fever abcess’s instead of Betadine. Worked just as well without the sting or any scarring left behind after healing. He also had me use it on a bacterial skin infection on one of my mares, (it doesn’t dry out skin or damage hair).
They sell two types. The Novalsan Solution can be used for flushing wounds and doesn’t need to be rinsed. The Novalsan Scrub has soap in the solution and should be rinsed after use.
Save yourself some money and purchase Chlorhexidine – the generic form of Nolvasan. I use chlorhexidine gluconate to make up topical cleansing solutions for my pack.
Alcohol isn’t intended for use on open wounds, mainly because it hurts like hell, but also because it has a tendency to dry out tissue and prevent healing. Its best for things like pre-injection cleansing, etc…any time you have intact skin and want to get it as close to sterile as possible.
Peroxide (full strength, that is) is also not a good choice for an open and healing wound because it tends to damage the cells responsible for building the foundation of the wound bed, and essentially stops granulation from taking place. (Granulation as in the normal phase of wound healing, not icky proud flesh.)
When a wound is fresh, a diluted peroxide solution is fine, but only to remove the inital dirt and nastiness. After 24-48 hours, it shouldn’t be used due to the reasons above.
I do wound care for people with difficult to treat/long term issues, and the thing I’ve found that is most effective at removing gunk from a healing wound is plain old normal saline applied with a little bit of pressure. There are several versions of the actual product we use, called Wound Wash Saline (creative, no?) at CVS/Walgreens, etc. It looks like a can of hair mousse, but shoots a stream of sterile saline at a pressure that cleans away the yuck without being painful or damaging tissue. (Not to mention being wicked fun to squirt at people, lol!) Or if you can’t find that, eye wash solution like is used for decontaminating chemical splashes works well too. Just squeeze and squirt from the top of the wound down. But double check the ingredients first to make sure there is nothing but sodium chloride, somewhere around 0.9%)
Second choice for cleaning boo-boos is warm water. Easy, cheap, and effective. Hope this helps.
Also, in re the actual topic of the original post, I’d like to tentatively add my name to the list of 20-somethings who don’t suck at life, lol. Thanks for the post, Fugs.
And boo, Elizabeth. Boo.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff
http://www.schreiners.com/FARM_SITE/Farm_wounds.htm
It works wonders! Its more spendy than rubbing alcohol and peroxide… but to me it is more than worth it!
I know, right?? Schreiner’s is amazing. And it works so fast its unbelievable. Definitely worth the money.
first off so what if my screen name is ana36 what i cant try and protect myself. second i did ask the vet to and he said there’s more risk to inject her than there is to let her have it. i never expected having a foal from this horse or any for that matter yes it would have been nice IF i wanted to breed her to breed her to a purebred morgan but i knew i didn’t have the money for it so i never did. as for her name her full name is Gypsy Rose nothing before it so it’s not the horse your thinking it is jennifer. and second off you guys have no clue what i do im not on the computer 24/7 and if you pay attention to those farmville things well there not from me. there from friends that post that shit on my wall. im sorry but i do have a life i go to a outpatient program in the day and look for a job online at night. as for my horse she lives about half an hour from me and since i go to the outpatient program i dont have the cash flow to go over there every day so i try to get out there once a week at the very least. there is only one spot of barbwire on that property all the rest is electric fencing. as for the alcohol and peroxide comments i had no idea. i was doing what i was told as i grew up learning horses, i mean seriously what else could i have used to clean the wound if not those 2?
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
Perhaps you should not own horses right now. And PLEASE get your dogs fixed so they cannot breed again!!
Again, you dolt. No one is calling you out for defending yourself. You came on here and spoke in the third person. Do you know what that means? When you made your first post, you wrote things like ” You don’t know what SHE’S going through. You shouldn’t judge HER’, etc as if you were someone else.
And when Cathy called you out, we all had a good laugh. Your first post pretending to be someone else didn’t work sweetheart, and now your spoutin off about ‘i’m allowed to defend myself, arent I?.
Life-fail. Big time.
Water. Clean running water. Like from a hose. Gently hose for as long as it takes to clean the wound, reduce the swelling and ease the pain.
If you can read, try reading a basic equine (that means “horse”) first aid book. Read the parts about foal care too. Because if you don’t even know basic wound care, you’re way over your head when it comes to having a foal. *shudder*
Why is this scenario always SO predictable???? These uneducated, unemployed yokels never have a clue about punctuation or run-ons. I do not have any extra income at all, but I do work 60 hours a week, make an honest living, make an effort to be educated, and take care of my horse. How do these lowest common denominator people always end up with unwanted pregnancy, wheter it be equine, canine, or human?
You have got to be kidding me. I used to live in a group home and I was able to keep a horse that I had before I went into foster care. I loved this mare and she was taken in by a 4-H leader and was kept for me for free untill I could find a place much closer to the group home I lived at. A stud from across the street tore down the fence (that was bearily there and the stud was unknown to exsist) and got into the pasture my mare was in. The fencing at the place were my mare was kept was not in the best of shape but when your 16, just lost everything you ever had and was given a place for your horse for free beggers can not be choosers. She was in season and I knew this. Yes she was bred. I was told by the woman who was keeping my mare that she was vetted and checked for pregnancy and was supposedly not in foal. (this was a lie) Iwas able to find a farm within bike riding distance from the group home I lived at and was able to move my beloved mare. I worked off her board (pasture board of 150 a month at less than minimum wage) and I did odd jobs at the group home to afford things like feed, Ferrier care and other misc. I also worked at the farm extra hours for some extra cash. I had a whole summer planed for showing my mare 4-H when I found out that she was indeed pregnant. I was crushed. I was pissed for I was lied to and the woman that kept my mare for free her daughter told me that a Vet was never out to check my mare. So, now I was going to be charged for 2 horses at the farm where I was boarding her and was in a very bad predicament. No one gave me any mercy in my predicament. I found a person who had some land with good fencing and a desire to trade the foal for keeping my mare untill Jr was weaned. I still worked at the farm to pay off some boarding owed and the few days my mare stayed in the foaling stall. I also worked to make some extra money for misc stuff for my mare and for Jr. (like vaccinations, ferrier, deworming and etc.) When Jr was weaned I took my mare back to the boarding facility and continued to work off her board. I decided to go to college and knew I could not take my mare with me and I wouldnt have the transportation to get to the farm and ppl I trusted said that it would be near impossible to go to school and board my mare close by. So I sold my beloved mare. It crushed me and all of that hard work, decision making and trying to do what was best for my mare as a teenager I never once asked for money. I never once asked for a hand out. No fundraisers, no lemonade stand, no “boo hoo feel sorry for me and my expsensive hobby” crap.
This girl needs to grow up quickly and make that decision on what is best for her horse at this time. At this early stage the foal can be aborted with out serious complications. If need be she can half lease the mare for ease of cost. Or sell the horse to some one who can afford to care for the mare and her “little” cut. (more like huge wound). Most Vets ( If you are on good standing terms with them) will allow you to make payments. Time to hit the pavement and start filling out those pain in the ass applications and or resume’s. I work at Wal_Mart right now at night to pay my bills because the horse industry is down and I cannot get a job on a horse farm right now. I dont like it one bit but I have to do what I need to do to take care of bussiness. I dont own a horse right now because I simply cannot afford one. I have had ppl offer me horses for free but I know that my ability to care for one at this mommet is nil. Sell the horse, pay the Vet or get your carcass up and beat the pavement for a while and get a job or two or even three if need be. Now if it was a dire need for a human family memeber like need for medication or an expensive operation and etc then by all means do a fundraiser but come on, having a horse is a luxury an expensive hobby, something one can do with out. I know how much it would suck to have to give up your horse, I’ve been there. Even a full lease can eleviate the financial pressure and still have ownership of the horse. Grown up decisions are hard to make……time to grow up. (Equine bussinesses are a different matter, more at stake but not a pass time hobby.)
Wal-Mart is far from my dream job, its third shift ( pays more) and its hard work and its killing me but I am taking care of bussiness. Thank God I do not have kids.
Zanne, wow. I applaud your maturity and work ethic and good sense. I think you just put a lot of (more-entitled, less-hard-working) people to shame. I do not envy your situation, but your attitude is awesome and it will get you through this. Best of luck to you!
I want to add that my spelling is not good and my typing is worse so I cant say much in that regard. At least i use punctuation and I try to use paragraphs and what have you.
The event has been deleted.
Is this the actual person’s FB?
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=667806035&v=wall
If so, they have several horses O.O AND can’t afford vet care? WTF?
Somebody should make a list of all the average expenses of a pregnant mare, the birth and then the foal once born.. Maybe that would scare her off xD
it’s not deleted its there but it’s not open to the public so you wont see it.
and fyi i dont have several horses i have 2 at the time being one of which im in the process of selling. get your facts straight.
You know, it really doesn’t matter how many you have. You’ve got multiple health issues both physical and mental, still haven’t found a job, and are trying to sell 1 of 2 horses so you can end up with 2 again that you bo doubt won’t be able to pay for. I understand you love your horses and you want them in your life but will you really be able to pay for your own vet bills when the baby comes out? Why should anyone else have to pay for you not having the heart to pay the $500 to have the foal aborted? Is it better to whine about how you don’t have the money and beg for people to donate?
Sell off the paint like you’re doing, abort the baby, and stick to just having one horse which is much easier to afford if you refuse to get rid of her. Start selling off stuff. Got a fancy cellphone? Take a downgrade and use the money from that towards vet bills. Got a nice show saddle? Nice bridal? Give them, and showing, up for the year. Can you do anything? Offer to start doing barn work for people for cheap. Start mowing lawns for christs sake. DO *everything* you can if this mare really means that much to you. Everyones got a fair share of problems and most of them deal with it, it’s life. You have to as well.
No, you have THREE. You bred your mare, remember? She is officially two horses right now. She requires additional nutrition (Too big of a word? She needs to eat good food more.), a safer environment (you know, where she won’t kill herself or her baby on sharp objects), and someone who calls the vet when things go wrong, not three weeks after things go wrong.
You don’t even realize that if there is a misrepresentation (If the baby doesn’t come out right), you have literally minutes to fix it before it’s too late and the mare and foal (that’s a baby horse) die.
We are angry, because you are HURTING your horse by ignorance (lack of knowing things). We are upset with you because you are NOT treating her with care.
Do you mean the paint? As in the one in the Facebook Album “For Sale” where underneath the very first pic of her without a blanket and someone asks “Wow! Lol why are you selling her???” your response is Elizabeth L. Randall: “well theres kinda another horse i want.”
THERE IS ANOTHER HORSE YOU KINDA WANT??????!!!!!????
Are you nuts?
And yes, your mare is underweight. There are several pics where you can clearly see her rib outlines and its obvious you haven’t taken that blanket off in months to take a look at her and how shes doing underneath.
Sell her. PERIOD.
Um…maybe if you told the truth we wouldn’t be getting our facts mixed up.
Sometimes the breed you least expect are great dogs with stock – best one I’ve ever had was a Corgi. Seriously – I’ll recommend that breed to *anyone* wanting a dog that’s good with all manner of livestock – they don’t chase, but they’re not afraid.
I just have to say…not defending her or anything.
If it was as easy as applying to these places to get a job, I would have a job by now. I applied to 25 different companies this summer, just looking for season work, including Wal-Mart (where I had worked a few summers before) and Target.
I got 2 interviews, and 0 jobs.
She’s in Illinois. If it’s anything like Indiana, then jobs are scarce. Our area is at 15% unemployment– that’s just the figures on who is drawing unemployment. That’s not even counting people who can no longer draw it, or haven’t sought unemployment benefits. It’s almost impossible to just drop an application and get a job.
So… she needs to give her mare to someone who cares (I’d take her and place her, but not much point, since she’s a state away), and then she needs to move somewhere where there are jobs.
So if I give you the money for the pony, I get to keep it right?
God dogs lady, get off your ass and make your own money.
I deal with horse shit daily for money.
That’s right. I pick some 20 or more stalls (50 stalls, 2 people) and take care of people’s ponies for a buck.
No it’s not pretty or fun, and you’ll probably smell pretty healthy afterward, but It doesn’t take brains, beauty, or for some barns – for you to even speak english – it just requires you to break a sweat.
If you really care about your pony, you could at least do that much.
Well I’ve known people to abort up until 5 months with vet supervision. So I guess it should still be ok. I just can’t believe the vet thinks it is safer not to abort..um sure. The mare could DIE giving birth, um hello, has to be worse than any side effects from lutalyse or pinching the embryo. I’m not even sure what to say about the rest of it. I did board my mare at a friends house one winter and then found out a few months later that the stud got out with the mares, um ok thanks for letting me know. They didn’t think he bred any of the mares..ok. I did have her palpated and was happy when the vet said no foal..told her she probably doesn’t hear that much. If she had been pregnant I’m not sure what I would of done. I guess if it could be aborted I would have. I don’t see the point in having foals born that don’t stand a chance from the beginning.
HAHAHAHAHHAAHA……

HOLD YOUR HORSES…..
One of the girls I go to college with went to HS with her – Thank you lovely FB for telling me that.
I’m going to try and see how much of a nitwit in real life she really is…..
Heh, begging for money on the internet- why haven’t I thought of that to help pay for my mare’s vet bills! My poor girl impaled herself 12 weeks ago and had to have surgery for said wound last weekend, so maybe in another 6 weeks or so I’ll have my poor girl healthy again. Vet bills are looking to be 5k or more…yay! So, what does this entail for me? RESPONSIBILITY! I am with that horse for 6 hours a day caring for her, vet bills are being paid with the emergency money in a savings account. I can’t work until the horse is healed, but once she is I am sacrificing a semester of college to work. You know, it really sucks having to put my entire summer vacation on hold for my horse, hell even putting a semester of school on hold- but I wouldn’t have it any other way. As I tell everyone, “Sorry, the horse comes first.”
You know, with the combination of the current economy and this girl’s problems, it only makes sense to sell the horses ASAP. I think horses are a great boon to mental health. The solution is to part lease, or volunteer at a rescue. There’s no need to be scrambling like this, when you can lease for a few bucks. Or help yourself by helping horses that need you.
In all seriousness, Ana, this mare’s abortion bill and pregnancy check should be paid for by the property owner who put the “gelding” in with her. No need to go panhandling; that’s negligence, and you should ask her nicely but firmly to pay for the expenses resulting from her mistake. The leg injury is your responsibility. And that’s where people are saying, “Root, hog, or die,” which is a fancy way of saying sometimes you take whatever pitiful job you can get because the folks (or animals) who are counting on you need money. You take this job despite all the problems besetting you, because the other option is getting rid of your horses and that would be sad.
If you wanted sympathy, you probably shouldn’t have come here. This is not the Sympathy Blog. This is a blog where everyone is pretty much bona-fide nasty to people who don’t take care of horses properly. That’s what the blog is all about.
And about the alcohol… it’s fine to clean a small, fresh wound with alcohol one time. Larger wounds, peroxide is better. I’m pretty sure my vet uses iodine. Although you’re lucky you didn’t get your brains kicked in! For wounds that are healing, don’t use either alcohol or peroxide because they slow healing. But any place that has horses on it should also have a FIRST AID KIT FOR HORSES, which should include a big old tub of goop for putting on wounds. What’s that stuff called? I’m drawing a blank.
I agree, but when i suggested that before fugly outed her, all her friends were on there calling me a dumbass, saying it is not the property owners fault. I know of several cases, even one on animal court, where the mare was bred by a stallion on the property. The owner of the property was responsible for all of the vet bills associated with the “accidental” breeding. In one case it was a cryptorchid, but they thought because he was crypt he couldnt produce. Regardless of not “knowing” he was a stallion, they knew a nut dropped obviously and still put her in with a stud. They didnt ask for proof of gelding or anything, therefore thier responsibility, but apparently this is a friend of the family so she doesnt want to ask that.
On a side note, I am 27, have a 1 year old daughter and just got my own horse which greatfully was “given” to me. He is a 21 year old great grandson of Secretariat, and the best darn horse ever. He is under weight so I have to add grain, and the people who I got him from dont beleive in vaccinations, so I had to run out and get those, luckily most avaialble at farm and fleet. I also had to buy grooming supplies, halter/leadrope, etc and I did not go out and ask people for money, I saved to buy my horse, and since I didnt have to “buy” him, I used that money for supplies instead. AND I paid a vet to come check him over even though I was told his teeth were just floated this spring, and he just got trimmed. Another case of an owner saying he is thin because he is old, UM NO, he is thin because he isnt eating enough. Problem solved with me, BUT if it ever comes to a time I cannot afford to have him PROPERLY cared for, I will sell or give him to someone who can afford his care. That is just what RESPONSIBLE people do with thier animals.
You are definitely correct!
Here’s another one.. posted in Ocala but the farm is in West Virginia. This woman’s heart is in a good place and she seems to be doing right by this mare… but seems to me if you can’t afford to meet an animal’s needs or have no reliable source of donations BEFORE taking in the rescue, better not to take it in….

The mare will be beautiful, I think, once she is rehabbed — most would not take the time or make the effort.
I see what you mean about a good heart and I’m glad they’re giving the rescued mare a chance. But is it really a good idea to breed Arabians when even you consider your husband a 100% beginner rider and are trying to live a low-impact homesteading life? I mean, horse breeding and low-impact homesteading life just don’t seem to mix these days if you really want to do justice to the horses.
Oh well, at least it sounds like she does a lot of research and reading and does her best to be informed. And their stallion is 4 and being started under saddle. Oh, and he already rears. Hmm.
It is not a good idea to breed Arabians PERIOD unless you have years of experience and the money to promote them in a competitive discipline.
Again, I can hook you up with “family horse” quality horses all day…FREE. Breeding more of them deliberately is BEYOND STUPID. The only thing that is still in any kind of short supply is high end, A circuit type horses. And trust me, you cannot just think your horses are high end – judges need to think it too and you need to have proof of that. Everybody thinks their horses are high end and most of those people get wake-up calls.
As someone else so eloquently said “Oh, boo-fucking-hoo.”
Here’s my sob story: Hi, I’m 29 years old, and have been living away from my lifetime home for the past 4 years. My homesickness was so bad that I couldn’t work for the past 3. I also have depression from an abusive childhood and PTSD from a car crash. I’m moving back home. I have three hamsters, three fish, and a turtle to support, plus my car payment! Please help!
amidoinitrite?
… Oh wait. I never ask for help without offering art in return, or pet grooming of someone is local. And I usually state the art will be done before I want the money. I’m also selling some of my stuff so I can have gas money to find a job when I get back.
Oh, and I will STILL be listing art for Angel Acres on eBay, even though they’ll no longer be local, once my bank account is straightened out. All while job hunting!
No excuses.
I got myself into this mess, I’m getting myself out. If people want to buy stuff to help, awesome, but I’m not going to guilt anyone into it.
Good for you! My horses have pedicures every 6 weeks. (I’ve had two in a lifetime) Isn’t it a great feeling to control your own destiny?
On a side note, I hope you 20-s’s learn to swing a hammer, cut a board, drive a tractor & back a trailer. You’ll save big cash in the lifetime of owning horses. Horses don’t need fancy, just safe and sturdy.
It’s painfully obvious that she wants a kyoot widdle baby horsey. When she gets tired of it, well, I suppose at least one Frenchman will have nice horse steak dinner.
Thank you, ana/Elizabeth, whoever you are, for supporting the horse slaughter industry. I’m sure that, as long as you at least keep some weight on the foal, he’ll look great hanging from a meat hook.
Grrr, not spaying the dog has actually gotten me even angrier than the horse getting knocked up! I live in a town where there are so many unwanted puppies that we are the euthanasia capital of America. Yup, San Antonio. Grrr, off with the balls!
Wow…. just…. wow.
Seriously, I’m 20 now, and I was more mature and responsible than this (and could actually write coherent sentences in a proper paragraph) when I was thirteen.
So, hmmm, according to this, I can ask for money too? Let’s see, what’s my sob story…
Oh yeah, I live in a small town of about 10,000 people where all of, oh, 4 businesses were actually hiring when I finished school for the year. 2 of them were looking for full-time permanent employees (impossible for me when I’m living a half hour away during the school year, and don’t have a driver’s license, because I can’t afford driver’s training, insurance, or a car, on top of school, because I don’t have a job), 1 of them was only hiring for a weekend event, and the other one apparently found someone better than me. I spent a week as soon as I got out of school shoving resumes at anyone and everyone who would take one, and never got a call back. I went back to the places who were hiring a couple times so they new I was interested and committed, but they didn’t hire me. Every time a “Help Wanted” ad came up, I’d apply, but again, no one wanted a summer student, they wanted permanent employees. The only place that’s actually looking for a student right now I can’t work at, because it’s a dog kennel, and I’m terribly, terribly allergic to dogs (I absolutely love dogs, but even with allergy medication, which I don’t want to be taking every single day, my eyes swell up to the point that I can barely see, and I get asthma attacks. I can only deal with dogs if I’m outside with them, or if I’m only inside with them for an hour or two). It’s been 3 months, and guess what? Still no job. Can you guys send me money? ‘Cuz you know, I’m the only person here who can’t get a job, and obviously I’m entitled to all your hard-earned money and need it more than you.
Yeah… no…
You know what I’m doing? I’m being a responsible, mature adult. I’m not begging for money (well, except from the bank), I’m taking every job opportunity I get (yard work and gardening for some elderly neighbours who can’t do it themselves anymore, piano lessons for another neighbour’s kid, painting for my parents who would otherwise hire professionals to do it, typing, organizing and scrapbooking for my grandmother who can’t do it herself), I’ve been scrambling to create a decent website to sell prints of my artwork and photography, I’ve been offering cheap commissions, I got permission from my riding coach to display some of my artwork with a few business cards in her tack room. Heck, I even enter any contest I can where there’s even a remote chance I might win money or free stuff (as long as I don’t have to pay to enter). And on top of that, I’m doing my best to save money. There are only 3 “luxuries” I allow myself to spend money on: A meal on-campus a couple times a week (less than $10), dinner and a movie with friends once every 2 or 3 months (less than $25 for dinner, and always make sure to take leftovers home, and do it on half-price movie night), and riding lessons once a week to keep my sanity (and even then, I try to work for my coach as much as I can to pay them off). And before I started university, I turned down an offer to part-board a horse I absolutely love, even though I knew it would mean he would be moved somewhere else because the owner couldn’t afford full board anymore. I haven’t seen him in 3 years, and still wish I could have afforded to take that offer, but I knew it was either that, or university.
And if I was in her position? I’d be doing everything I could. I’d be willing to cut back on everything to the point that I’m eating ramen noodles every meal every day so I could look after my horse. I’d be getting money any way I could, I’d be looking after the horse as much as I could to cut down on vet bills for something perfectly safe to do myself. And if it really came down to it, I’d start looking for someone to buy or co-own the horse who is willing to look after some, or all, of the vet bills. But I would never, never be begging for money and not offering anything in return.
And for god’s sake, I wouldn’t be having that foal!!!! If she can’t afford the vet bills for one horse, how the hell does she think she’s going to afford two?!?!?!?
I’m not going to comment on Elizabeth’s situation but hopefully can offer some advice on what to do if you find yourself jobless with horses.
1. If you are currently employed- write out a plan on what to do if you become unemployed. How will you feed/board, provide farrier and emergency vet care. Jot down your costs of horse ownership from soup to nuts because once it’s down on paper you have a better comprehension on what you need to provide financial in the lean times.
2. Sell EVERYTHING that you possibly can- including tack. Keep a list going- prioritize that list on what goes first. You can ride without a saddle. Do you need 20 saddle pads? or the extra bridles or the extra bits? Sell on craigslist. Yeah it’ll be hard to part with some of your favorites and they might not sell for what you think they are worth- but isn’t your horse(s) worth more? Also sell misc trinkets and whatnot.
3. Collect recyclables. Seriously! You don’t need to dumpster dive to collect recyclables- ask friends and family, neighbors, if they have misc metals or recyclables that you can take. They get junk removed and you can make a few bucks.
4. Yard work or clean up jobs… ask your barn if you can work off board. Ask your VET if they need some help or if you can work off some vet bills clean or filing.
5. Learn how to show groom/braid/clean tack. Or fix blankets, wash blankets etc…
6. Nix the cell phone or reduce your plan to the bare minimum. Same with cable or internet. We actually survived for generations without either. Somehow we managed to progress in life. Do you need the $40/60/80 unlimited texting plan? Or just get the $10/15/20 no frills plan and tell your friends you’ll give them a quick call once or twice during the week…
The list is endless of things one can do to scrape by in the lean times or the unemployed times.
I’ve read this including all comments. Miss Elizabeth has 3,535 friends including some very influential ones in the horse world. It just goes to show you that people will friend anyone on facebook. Simone Netherlands who recently spent a week in Washington, DC lobbying for HR503/S727 is one of Elizabeth’s
friends. Julie Albright prominent racehorse owner /trainer is one of her friends. That’s only two of her 3,535 ‘friends’. Another interesting oddity on her page… “Save Innocent Horses from Slaughter-Elizabeth has supported Save Innocent Horses from Slaughter” which goes against the very thought of bringing some very fugly horse into this world. And probably the most humorous tidbit was on the ‘boxes’ tab. Elizabeth likes to take quizzes and here are the answers to just a couple. …
‘how will you die?’ her answer was ‘horse riding’
what are you born to do? money maker
Which type of woman are you? Lovely Lady
What kind of horse do you are? Palomino
how much you love your horse? your horse is your life !!! 100%
Rorschach Test result Perfectly Sane
She also uses a copyrighted photo for her profile photo. It’s marked across the photo and if you had purchased that photo, you would have recieved the photo sans huge copyright logo acrossed it. Ripping off photographers is not proper etiquette for ‘lovely ladies’.
Now how did I see this profile that she claims is private? No, I’m most certainly NOT a friend of Elizabeth. But if you are a friend of a friend, you can see it. So which one of her 3,535 friends am I friends with? Here’s a hint Liz… it’s more than one of them and less than 3,000 of them.
And if Liz or anyone else wants to jump on me for posting this, take note, anything I’ve posted is copied and pasted direct from Liz and the photo info is copyright law.
PS Kathy, I’m sorry to have had to reregister as I have new computers and lost all my old password info so if you’re limited on registered user capacity, just tell me how to get rid of one.
No limitations – register all you want!
I also noticed that her profile pic was copyrighted, plus there were about 15 more pictures in her photo section that were also copyrighted. So, I looked up the photographer and sent them a short little email about where I’d seen their stolen pictures.
I think they were all gone by that afternoon.
“you’ve really gotten on every nerve I possess this morning”
Absolutely classic!
this is HILARIOUS in a pathetic, “I’ve lost all faith in humanity” kind of way. She is 15 and was irresponsible enough to leave her mare on dangerous agistment (where clearly there are hazards that she has injured herself on) left the mare with a stallion, found out she was injured /went on a holiday!!! and left the injured mare untreated/ and then complains how much it sucks to be her?
F**K THAT! I am 19 years old. 19!!!! I pay for everything myself. I pay my agistment, farrier, routine vet checks, dental, vaccinations feed. I pay for absolutely everything and I would NEVER try to get someone else pay for my horse. Your horse, your repsonsibility. Maybe if she had paid a bit closer attention to that mare in the first place and actually paid MONEY to get the horse onto a decent paddock without stallions, none of this would have happened!
And who cares if her parents paid for her holiday, she still went on it and left that mare with nobody cleaning or tending the wounds. My parents went to Thailand for a month and offered for me to come, all expenses paid. I said no. Why? Because I do not trust anyone else to care for my horse. That’s called responsibility. I’m 19 and I know that, so suck it up princess, you’ve got 6 years on me, start acting like it!! (if any of you are on her fb event page you might see my posts LOL)
We all have a sob story, so why should she get handouts for being irresponsible and letting her horse get hurt and knocked up? My horse costs about $3,500 a year and that’s if he is totally healthy all year round and doesn’t need any new rugs, extra feed or pasture improvements. Of course there is always that one-off injury, or he tears a rug and needs a new one, or a fence needs fixing… I’m 19 years old and I can manage that. It’s called budgeting. If she is that desperate for money then she can do what I have done in the past and kiss goodbye to her pride and get a menial but steady job. I worked as a cleaner (yes, scrubbing toilets!) for a time because it was the only work I could get, and I was not going to neglect my horse. Now I have a fantastic admin job that pays well for my age, but dammit I bet she could get a job far nicer than mine. She’s 25, has some education (although her grammar would beg to differ!) and is obviously good at manipulating people. I’m sure she can find work somewhere. And if the only work she can get is scrubbing toilets then so be it, that’s what it is to have a horse.
First off Izzypie she wasn’t untreated the vet was out before vacation. He said I was doing a good job at cleaning it. And if you actually read the article we didn’t know the stallion was a stallion until the ball dropped. Then after we found out he went back to his original owners. Irresponsible leaving a horse on property where she can get hurt, um hello any horse can get hurt on any property. So you mean to tell me that if your horse gets hurt at a boarding barn you gonna move her because she got hurt? No your not, accidents happen it’s a way of life.
Um, you admitted you hadn’t seen her in a week and didn’t know how she was. A wound like that needs to be treated DAILY, as others have observed. You don’t just go on vacation and leave the horse in a field.
And it is true that a horse can get hurt anywhere but it certainly vastly increases the odds when something is running around after them breeding them!
You need to go after the BARN OWNER for the costs of your vet care…not beg for it online. The BARN OWNER, or whoever put the stallion out with your mare, is the responsible person.
The vet said she would be fine that there was no need to be out there everyday as it was already scabbed over and healing. He said to just watch her and if she stopped putting weight on it to call him. I had people watching her as I was on vacation 4 people actually. I never got a call from any of them saying she needed the vet and when I got back I went and checked her right away and she was fine.
I have a hard time believing the vet told you she would be fine. I’m looking at the picture you took with your fancy phone, and that isn’t a ‘fine’ injury. That’s an injury that requires stitching, a pressure bandage, and probably debriding as well. The issue is that you did nothing, for too long. Now she basically has to heal up as best she can on her own, with whatever ugly scar she comes up with.
Would I move my horse from a boarding facility that put new horses unchecked out with my mare? Yes. Would I move my horse from a boarding facility if I walked out to see her and an injury of that magnitude was untreated? Yes. Would I make the barn owners pay for their negligence if they didn’t promptly call me and notify me of my mare’s injury? Hell yes.
Ana/Elizabeth, you still aren’t getting it. You have gone Epic Fail on many levels, with a mare that appears to be a really fantastic mare. You are coming onto a blog run by a horsewoman, and read by many more horsemen and horsewomen. We KNOW horses. We KNOW vets. We KNOW that you don’t know what you are talking about. We also know that you will leave your mare knocked up by whatever trashy no-name colt got in with her. In six months or less, in January, you will have a pregnant, scarred, possibly lame mare who you either dump at auction, or give away to someone who won’t love her or appreciate her. THIS is what you have set her up for, and she has done NOTHING to deserve this fate.
I love the whole “someone told me my horse is worth so much more than that” CRAP. CRRAAAPPPP!!
UTTERLY POINTLESS.
Just because Mr. Rogers down the road said your horse is a swell good-looker and is worth every penny of $3000 does not justify keeping the price tag above what the horse’s MARKET VALUE is. What is the value of $3000 or even the likely over-priced $1500? Seriously? HOW IS A HORSE WORTH $3000 WHEN YOU CAN’T SELL IT FOR $1500 ?!? When using a currency whose value fluctuates with the economic factors of living in the real world, you can’t just declare something to be of whatever value you or someone else thinks (edited to note: the stupid will believe stupid, so stupid occurrences are possibly). Drop that ridiculous “my horse is worth XX” crap and list your horse at a price in tune with what the current going price is.
I sold my horse in 2009 at the very competitive price of $6000 based on his mental and physical possessions. If I’d picked him out of time and placed him back in 2006, I could’ve probably found a nice home for him at $8000+. $6000 was a fair price in 2009, just like $8000 would’ve been fair in 2006. MARKET VALUE folks.
I seriously don’t know why people add that crap in their ads. I keep very up-to-date with current equestrian ads and I have found that most people have no idea how to sell something. It is seriously mind-boggling.
And obviously something that irritates the utter living hell outta me
. If someone needs help selling their horse, I’d be happy to guide you through some marketing basics, lol. Geez.
It’s the basic problem that everyone runs into– a possession is worth what you can sell it for, NOT what you paid for it. That’s why Antiques Road Show is so popular. It’s cool to have experts look at your possession, and tell you what it would probably sell for in the marketplace.
If you bought your horse for $3,000, your horse is ONLY worth $3,000 if someone else is willing and able to pay that much for it. You might have been the sole idiot in the four county area willing to pay that price, in which case the actual value of your horse is much lower. You are right, FC– people don’t get that. It’s true of all possessions. My favorite is someone’s living room couch, which they paid $3,000 for brand new only ten years ago, so they are willing to ‘let it go’ for $2,500.
The vet said it didn’t require stitches it was a scrap not a deep cut.
You know, if I didn’t know this woman was older, I would say she’s acting a lot like my two-faced cousin who can’t even remember what the truth is. “The injury is this bad” then later in the comments she says, “Oh, well its just a scrape!” And you also have the ‘vet’ saying “Oh, well she’s two months along and we can’t abort her”. Granted, I don’t know much about breeding horses because I have no use for that information currently and had to ask if this information was true. Now that I know this a lie, what the heck is up with your vet? The injury is nothing serious? Right, because that injury looks dreadful; so you’re either lying, posting an image you never took, or your vet’s not really a vet. Then you whine and complain that no one has their facts straight here when you keep changing information in every other post. Tell the freakin’ truth and we will have our facts straight and can at least attempt to help you. You’re not helping yourself by lying left and right and you’re not helping your mare by pretending its nothing. She’s injured and she’s pregnant and, in the image that’s in this blog, looks a little on the thin side. Put yourself where she’s at; you’re pregnant with a nasty injury on your leg, hungry (if that is the case), and the person taking care of you is completely unreliable. If you think your life is bad, imagine how your horse feels!
If anything makes me more upset than someone whose apathetic towards the treatment of animals is people who have to lie at every turn because they don’t want to get criticized.
I talked to the vet the other day cause he’s gotta come back out and luckily my aunt is paying for it this time. But last time he was out he said she was perfectly healthy, he never said anything about her being thin, and she’s on grass pasture 24/7 and now we are starting to put hay out cause the owner of the property has brought 3 more horses in. She will be getting moved as I dont find it a safe place for a pregnant horse anymore. She will be getting better care and staying with a family member of mine to make sure she gets better care. So I hope this makes all of you happy to know that I am doing the right thing and removing her from the property and having a family member look after her instead of me. But I will still be able to go see her and do whatever I want with her in the mean time. They are just gonna be homing her and making sure she gets feed and such.
Right now your mare should be getting a mare and foal feed. She needs that to help keep her in good condition and to help her grow that baby. Please get her on some HorseGuard as well. If you are forcing her to go through the pregnancy and take the risk, at least feed her better than grass in the field and some occasional hay that it sounds like she may have to fight other horses for.
My mare has had one foal because when I purchased her she was already bred and I was too ignorant to know I could have it aborted. Luckily, she foaled fine and had a wonderful little filly that I found an amazing home for. Unfortunately, a friend of mine had a mare in foal at the same time. The foal was 2 weeks over due and when she went into labor he was turned upside down. That mare labored for HOURS, with the help of a vet, and eventually had to have the dead colt removed. In pieces. It was the most horrifying thing I have ever seen and because of it I will never, ever breed my mare. My friend was lucky she didn’t lose the mare along with the colt.
YOU do the RIGHT thing? I think this sums it up:
“Ana/Elizabeth, you still aren’t getting it. You have gone Epic Fail on many levels, with a mare that appears to be a really fantastic mare. You are coming onto a blog run by a horsewoman, and read by many more horsemen and horsewomen. We KNOW horses. We KNOW vets. THIS is what you have set her up for, and she has done NOTHING to deserve this fate.”
She will NOT be dumped off at Auction I would never take her to Auction and I would never GIVE her away. She wont be lame cause her leg has healed there is only a small portion with a tiny scab on it left to heal. Also everything i have told you that was said by a vet was exactly that said by a vet.
