In case you aren’t having enough nightmares…

I have to post this news story because everybody wants to discuss it.  I do not personally know who the driver was, and I have heard different opinions about who actually saw what.  I am posting it because I think it is a cautionary tale about several things:

1.  Checking your equipment.  Well, duh, but it’s true.  Trailer doors can pop open.  They should always be secured at more than one point with more than one type of latch.  Things that can pop up when you go over a bump should have a pin or ring securing them.  Doors and hitches (also, floors!) can never be checked often enough, too carefully, or by too many sets of eyes.

2.  Nylon halters, honestly, suck for trailering.  Sure, I’ve done it.  Most of us have.  But the truth is, a leather halter would most likely have saved this horse’s life.

3.  I don’t know if this person was high.  I am fairly sure they weren’t drunk or they would have been cited for that.  Unfortunately, drugs are harder to detect.  I find it extremely hard to believe…EXTREMELY hard to believe…that they did not feel this happen.  I have hauled quite a lot in my life and I can feel it when they paw, when someone bites at someone else and scares them, when they kick the side of the trailer.  Most of the people on this blog are going to agree that you can feel when something is going wrong in the trailer, from the truck, no cameras or high tech equipment required.  So if this person was cold sober and of sound mind, all I can say is that she is not a person who ought to EVER haul horses again.  She is clearly not “tuned in” at all to what is going on behind her.  Not everybody should drive horses.  Also, my understanding is there were two other women in the truck. I just do not get how three sober, non-mentally-impaired people can be that oblivious to their surroundings.

That said, I’ll leave you to the news stories and the comments that follow them.  Warning, the video is BAD…do NOT watch the video unless you have a strong stomach.  You don’t need it to know the story.  The first link has the most comments.

Lack of Caring Brings Outrage Over Dragging Death of Horse

I’d say my feelings mirror those of the person who posted this:

“I too live on Grandview. This is a bad bad deal. I heard the screams and saw the carnage on the road. I have trailered horses for many years and how do you not notice any of it. How do you not notice your horse being dragged, your trailer door open and the pull and shift of the trailer. The horse at times weaved into the ditch hello… Any person who knows how to drive should ceck their mirrors and pay attention to their trailer at ALL TIMES!!! I don’t know about you but I check my trailer mirrors even around corners. This was an accidnet but that ended when the horse fell out of the trailer. It is now neglect. My kids have to get off the bus in the blood that wont wash off the road. I feel bad for the horse and everyone in this community. “

Very well said. The accident part DID end when the horse fell out.  I don’t know if you can criminally prosecute this or not – I’m not that familiar with criminal law – but it certainly seems like serious negligence to me, at the very least.  The police are trying to minimize the incident, telling reporters that the horse was killed instantly – but too many witnesses heard the horse screaming. I tend to believe the latter, and that the police are merely try to prevent a lynch mob from forming to get justice for the horse. Well, I’m all for legal justice – so maybe the Snohomish P.D. should try applying some instead of trying to hush this up, as it appears is happening.

After that, I figure we could all use something pleasant to look at, so check out these rescued foals at Shiloh Horse Rescue. They’re not adoptable (yet) but Shiloh can always use donations for their care. Yes, this is why people love babies – they’re adorable! – but if you want a baby, and have the knowledge/facilities for one, please consider ADOPTING one (or, two!)

In case you missed it, the driver of this trailer/truck was on the news last night. She did an interview with Channel 13. She refused to show her face on camera, so all the showed were her ugly feet. As far as feet go, hers were pretty nasty. She was wearing sandles of all things and had gross toenails to boot.

Back to the topic – The woman said the horse that died used to belong to her, but she sold it to a friend. She only borrowed it for the day to go on (one last) trail ride. She said the radio wasn’t on in the truck and she constantly checks her mirrors. She had no idea the horse has fallen out the back until another motorist forced her to stop.

I’m sorry for that poor horse, and for the fact that the driver still cannot come to terms with the truth in this case. How do you drive down a curvy road with the trailer door open and not see it swinging around in the side mirror?

Just my humble opinion, she didn’t show her face because there are redneck knuckle draggers in arlington that would scare the beegeebers out of any sane person. I am sure that I mentioned already that I get a bit worried for my son, as for some reason she chooses to believe his drama queen antics, and thinks this is my horse. Perhaps I may have mentioned to said driver that the people in our area are unstable.

WOW, Lune Du Cheval! Having problems with the name calling again? The sincerity in your posts, attempting to paint the driver as a sympathetic figure, really seems disingenuous in contrast to posts like this. You are totally coming off as a woman with a vendetta. I have read these posts as well as the comments in the linked stories and but for the fact, that no one came forward to take responsibility for their actions in this case, there would not have been a search for answers that led to an error in judgement in the posting names and addresses. I find it interesting that the driver, knowing that innocent people were being pulled into this in an attempt to find her, was fine letting it continue and when she finally does speak, she still does not take responsibility for her negligence. I find it interesting that everyone coming to the defense of the driver, proclaiming accident only cannot extend the same generousity to a woman so greatly affected by the callous, negligent act of a driver killing another innocent living being, that she has put herself out there to try and get some sense of justice, not only for the horse, but the community at large.

    • This horse’s death is now being mourned in Canada, Europe, and across the US. The driver of this truck was negligent, accident or not…….. If you are driving drunk and hit another driver, is that an “accident”? Yes it is, it is also a negligent act punishable by law, and you go to jail for that “accident/negligent act”. If you are driving with an load that is secured, and for some unseen reason something falls out, is that an “accident”? Yes it is, it is also a negligent act that is punishable by law. You will get a minimum fine and possibly charges and suit filed if you damage another person’s property.

This “accident” was a living breathing horse that “accidentally” fell out of a trailer, and “accidentally” suffered for over a half mile, then over the next two and a half miles proceeded to have his innards drug out and bones shaved down by the road, it’s entire stomach cavity being exposed and left side ground off… this so called “accident” is a punishable negligent act.

The ONLY reason it has not been treated as such is because the victim was a HORSE!!!

Just thought I would mention that this story is now being aired on Canadian Stations as well.

I know this has been beat to death, but there is NO fucking way that was an accident. If she didn’t do it on purpose than she is dumber than a sack of shit if she didn’t feel that. The interviews I’ve seen she said the horse was tied properly in the trailer, uh yeah no it wasn’t if it was dragged like that. Sorry toots.

Alliecat this is in response to your post, couldn’t get my ‘puter to load the page 1 comments after I logged in. The problem is that the driver’s “friends” have closed ranks, the Fox News local station has been thoroughly co-dependent on the guilty party and won’t report facts, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s office failed to adequately investigate and in a very short space of time deemed it an “accident” and probably worse yet if you read the forums linked by Fugly above, you will see that some people are taking it pretty far in their attempts to protect the guilty party/parties even including threats of physical harm and smearing one citizen investigator’s personal information including false reports of previous litigation all over the ‘net. Though the citizen investigator is gamely trying to carry on in the face of such incredible cyber-harassment it really IS beginning to look as though the guilty party/parties is/are going to get off scot free. There are a lot of crimes even other than animal abuse the driver/cohorts could be charged with not the least being failure to secure a load. But apparently the driver has “friends in high places” and coupled with that and the fact that Snohomish County, Washington is absolutely notorious (ask any rescue group) about ignoring animal abuse issues, there are simply going to be no consequences for what this person, or people, did to that horse.

Well, I certainly have no “vendetta” in the situation, and am not sure why you would say so. Anyone who wants to stop by and discuss it with me is certainly welcome to do so. As yet, nobody has. I have been flat out called a liar, on points that were certainly not lies. I am trying very hard not to make assumptions, but I see so many people jumping to conclusions with half baked theories with no validation. When you are putting information out there as a fact, it would be nice if you were to provide verification as to how you know it is a fact.

If the driver was me, I would be terrified to go to our town. So I can’t blame her for not wanting to be seen. She has provided her identity to the Snoco SD, and they have her statement on file. I don’t see why it is necessary for her to put her identity out for the general public. That is my personal opinion. If any legitimate agency calls snoco SD, I would think SD would be able to give them the reports that have been filed.

Anyone who lives in the area is welcome to stop by and discuss it. I am not very difficult to find. I have lived there for many years.

Gee, Lune Du Cheval, thanks for the invitation to your, “rednecked, knuckle dragging” infested town where I can come and be in fear for my life. Sounds like good times, but I’ll have to pass. I did not realize that you lacked in reading comprehension, but clearly you do, since I clearly stated why I feel you have a vendetta and you can’t seem to fathom it. Doesn’t really matter though, since it’s only an opinion. Personally, I don’t see why you are posting any “information”. It is clear from your posts that you are standing up for the driver and attempting to deflect attention away from the heart of the matter, which is, the negligent dragging to death of a horse. You want people to concentrate on the final resting place of the animal and feel sorry for the sympathetic person you deem the driver to be. However, Lune Du Cheval, the proof of the negligence lies in a 2.5 blood trail, left by an animal fighting for it’s life and being dragged to a tortureous death. This driver has had ample opportunity to come forth in anonymity and take responsibility for her actions. She chooses not to. She owes that community an apology for the horror her actions put every individual through that witnessed the animal being dragged, that had to literally clean up her mess from their yards and off the street. Thank God, there wasn’t a bicyclist that got hit or a motorcyclist coming in the opposite direction as the carcass swung around. The potential was there and the fact that your law enforcement chooses to look the other way, is reason enough not to visit your town or county for that matter, since clearly, they make up the rules as they go along and you will never know where you stand until something happens. Not to mention the fact that they knowingly allow incompetent drivers to continue to drive the roads. Amazing!

Well, I still don’t understand why you feel it is a vendetta. I have not said once that she was in the right. I have not once said that it was not horrendous. But there is not a need for the general public to know her name. You don’t need a name to write a letter to a congressperson, or legislator of your choice. All you need to mention is the event and that SD has the information, and that government can surely obtain the records.

What I said was that in my opinion, she was sincerely devastated and in shock. That is clearly an opinion. The trailer tie started out at appx 36″ long. With the weight on it, it stretched to about 60″, and the horse’s head and part of his neck was inside, while from the chest down was outside. That is a fact. He was not dangling on a lunge line whipping around. That is a fact. I never at anytime suggested that anybody not be angry. I personally feel sorry for her, her family, and her friend that lost the horse, whether I am still angry that it happened is my business.

I have only been trying to present the correct facts and not delve into areas that I don’t have first hand knowledge of.

You are no voice of reason, Dear. No matter how hard you try to present yourself that way. Since I said nothing about thinking the horse was on a lunge line, I believe your reference must be in response to my saying, Thank God there wasn’t a bicyclist hit or a motorcyclist coming in the opposite direction hit by the carcass as it swung around. It does not take a lunge line length to have the carcass swing into oncoming traffic or reach out to the side, if the head, neck and chest area are out of the trailer. The carcass is not a stiff board with wheels on it to track the trailer. Good God woman, THINK ABOUT IT! It is negligence and incompetency that this happened. Plain, simple, end of story. She needs to be accountable, because normally, there are laws that protect the general public from people who display dangerous actions. I don’t care about the identity of this woman, only that she is held accountable. I don’t care if you are angry or not. What I care about, is that you are attempting to deflect attention away from the heart of this matter. The fact that law enforcement is not doing their job in this case, has left people with a WTF? so if the only way to exact accountability is to have expressions of public outrage replete with speculations in an attempt to make sense out of the insanity of the lack of law enforcement to enforce the laws and the fact that the driver would not come forward and take responsibility for her actions, so be it. I do not believe this woman should have physical harm done to her, but I do believe she deserves legal ramifications and in the face of that not happening, she deserves to know how the general public feels about her for her actions.
After the last couple of posts, it’s clear I am beating my head against a wall, but then I was pretty certain a light bulb moment would not be forthcoming, when I started. It is clear that you either were friends before this incident or have since become friends with this driver. Whatever your reason for remaining willfully ignorant and unmoved by the injustice of this situation, are your own and I really don’t care. There was potential for this case to end much worse then it did. Fortunately, it didn’t end worse, this time. Since she is still free to roam the streets, without so much as a wrist slap for her incompetency, it is only a matter of time before it happens again, since she does not believe she did anything wrong and her belief is bolstered by supporters like you. Good job.

btw, I just noted you said, head and neck were in the trailer, the fact the chest was out of the trailer, would still allow for the body to swing, just not as wide, but enough, given the length of a horses main body, to take out a bicyclist or motorcyclist.

Bear Bunny, Per the definition, : an often prolonged series of retaliatory, vengeful, or hostile acts or exchange of such acts

I have no idea what hostile ACTS you think I have committed. Your statements drip with sarcasm, so I can only imagine that your voice of reason got lost somewhere between your brain and the keyboard.

Your hostile act, Dear, is in your continued attack in the verbiage you use on the woman trying to get justice for this horse. As for the dripping sarcasm, it tends to come out when I have to explain things to the willfully ignorant.

and I attacked her HOW??? Dani and I have spoken, or emailed several times. Anytime she wants clarification she asks me, and I tell her, so really, I view your vituperative insults as superfluous fluff, water off a duck’s back… I am sorry that you have been so frustrated with me. I don’t think Dani feels attacked by me, but she knows how to get in touch with me when she needs to. I have not blocked her efforts to assist Pesado’s investigation. However, I have committed no acts that could be considered vengeful.

Oh, Honey, I am not frustrated with you. I get what you are and I see exactly what you are about. All your questions can be answered in your own words, from the first page and no doubt on Topix. Look them up. If you have suddenly cozied up to Danielle after all your posts, bashing her credibility, to that I say, good for Danielle for being able to turn the other cheek, but I would caution her against turning her back on the likes of you. As a side note, I would also suggest you go back and reread the post where I mention the word, “vendetta” and get your context straight. I know comprehension is difficult for you, but take it slowly and I’m sure you will get there.

Bunny bunny bunny. It makes me so incredibly happy to see you happy sweetie…. I simply disagree with your usage of the word vendetta. I did not attack her, I presented the facts as an eyewitness to the situation after the trailer stopped. I did not espouse to anything other than that. There were several outrageous lies, an much wild speculation.

Usually I find however that miscreants are not open to integrating facts into their daily lives. Thanks for the ever interesting discourse though.

Ohhhh, so saying, “Rumors abound, and some smarmy actress-wanna-be jumped on the opportunity to get on the screen, crocodile tears and all.” is fact, not undermining in anyway, nor attacking credibility?. Hmmmmm, I guess we differ in that opinion was well. Interesting discourse, for sure, though it would have been more mentally stimulating if you paid better attention to what you wrote and understood what was being responded to. You take care Janice. Work on that comprehension, glad to see you availed yourself to a dictionary, so until the next time you proclaim the high road only to turn hypocrite, be seein’ ya.
