UPDATE:Â Â Newest article here:
Three horses seized, PCAC trying to get rest surrendered
I really have to applaud Bruce Smith for his coverage of this case. He is getting the facts out there. I also want to note for those of you who want to blame PCAC that, as far as I can see, they have done everything just right. You know why nothing has been done faster? Look in the mirror if you are a local who has been out there and who has failed to file a formal report. Guys, we have a legal system and due process in this country. No one is going to go seize horses without evidence. You know who has to provide that evidence and get the ball rolling?  Witnesses! PCAC can’t just march onto anybody’s property without a REASON to, any more than a cop can pull you over without a reason. A rumor is not enough. If you want to save horses’ lives, you have to file that formal report. If you don’t, please don’t run all over the internet blaming animal control for somehow failing to do their job. They can’t do it if you don’t do your part as the eyewitness. End of rant.Â
By the way, to the dude who alleges he has his “nationally ranked stallion” at that place, I see you are too afraid to sign your name but you have lost your crackers if you don’t understand how bad you’re making yourself and your horse look by boarding at a place where horses are starving to death.  Who does that? Come on. Stick a crowbar in your checkbook and put your horse at a decent barn if he is that nice. If you can afford to show, you can afford a decent barn!Â

I mentioned Darlene Wilson, a Fugly blog repeat offender, just a few days ago. Darlene first hit the Fugly blog in October 2008 with this report and pictures.
Apparently it FINALLY hit the news!
Follow up Dispatch article today
Wow listen to Darlene lie lie LIE!
OMG seriously? Darlene, you did not JUST see the mess. The MESS has been going on for at LEAST eight years and I have pictures of your TRAIN WRECK from two years ago! You phony-ass, lying, horse-starving bitch. Read the comments to the article, everybody, EVERYONE knows this is NOT a new situation!
Horsebytes Blog got it right — with all of the history!
Anybody with Datasource want to run off a list of the horses she still owns (at least according to the registry)? I seem to recall there are some very nice horses suffering in her little hell-hole.
I really want to see a prosecution here. This is a long term neglect case and she is guilty as sin and never took action to give them away when she could have, instead putting high price tags on them AND swerving any inquiries from people who sounded too knowledgeable on the phone as she did not want to give them access to her property.
However, this is a good example of the value of persistence:
You guys write to me all the time to speak of your frustration with how slowly the wheels of justice turn and how horses die while you’re complaining and no action is taken. That is true. Horses died in this case – recently. The details will all come out. However, thanks to the continued stream of complaints and the internet community, action is being taken and who knows how many lives will be saved. Twenty? Thirty? Forty? Some of those horses are going to rehab just fine and go to new homes with people who love them and feed them cookies and get their feet done every 6-8 weeks and buy them cute plaid horse blankets so they never feel the misery of rain rot ever again.
If you say nothing – NOTHING is helped or saved.
Believe me, I know all the reasons for doing nothing. I get all the threats — from legal threats to death threats. I do worry about my own horses being retaliated against. If I had children, I’m sure I’d worry about them, too. I know all the reasons why people don’t speak up and don’t report abuse and neglect, but I also know how often horses’ lives are saved by those who do. I can’t make any of you take on the risks of reporting. I can only tell you that there is no feeling that quite compares to knowing you helped keep a horse from starving to death.
We live in a high tech age. It is easy to take cell phone pictures while you pretend to be texting or checking your calendar. We have zoom lenses that allow us to take pictures from the street, without trespassing (NEVER trespass!).
Please, when you see it — report it. It may take 15 of you to do it before action is taken — please don’t fail to be that building block the authorities need to make a case.

She still has 108 horses registered in her name. She’s bred 124! I wonder how many are still alive? Sons and daughters of leading stallions others would love to have in their barns (Bey Shah, El Hilal (goodness!), Magic Dream CAHR, etc.).
Is there any way to screen cap or copy and paste the list so we can start to work on identifying which are alive, dead, or sold but not transferred?
I don’t expect you to retype but maybe you can screen cap?

Any word on what’s going on with these horses? According to that list, she has the maternal grandsire and maternal half-brother to one of my Arabians. I would like to know they are safe and if I can manage it, help them out a little.
Maybe some one can do this with Judy Catons horses as well. I know of at least one that she killed and buried but heard that there is many more. Also this case has been given to the prosecutor’s office. http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20100410/NEWS01/704109887&news01ad=1#Snohomish.horse.rancher.may.be.charged
I wonder if any of their breeders are on Fugly’s Horse Reunions website.

TP PIQUANTE AHR*407708 was sold to her two years ago.
Good catch! So that one is safe. This is the kind of thing I’d like to do – let’s try to cross some off the list and see who is safe and who may be still at risk.
Sorry, Sold to Darlene. Not safe. That post is from a previous owner who bred her to a welsh pony.
MADAMA BUTTERFLY AHR*549481 23-January-1997 Mare Bay
I can tell you with all certainty that Madam is well and good. she’s been with us since 2005.
AWESOME!
I have tried and tried to contact someone regarding horses of Darlene Wilson’s. I sold Darlene a total of three horses over the course of decades. One fo those mares is now deceased, and she lived to a pretty ripe old age. Darlene had references at the time…even a Vet! I am sick over this and have tried to take back /buy the horses I sold to her and/or others as well. I sold her a wonderful mare TP Piquante as recently as 2008, and she was transported by a professional horse hauler. When this ‘hit the fan’ I co ntacted Darlene and she assured me that she had already given the mares acquired from me to someone else. The prices she wanted for her horses were (in my estimation) astronomical at the time, and udner the circumstances. (bearing in mind that I had sold her mares for $750.00)
the mares she bought from me over they ears are:
AK Wazira grey pb
Jaly Black Slyper black pb
TP Piquante grey pb (who was in foal when she left here, but who Darlene claims came up open the folowing May ..??)
If ANYone knows ANYthing about these mares, please advise me.
Thanks you.
Jennifer
Jennifer, I’ll e-mail you.
A few more googles in case anyone can get in touch with previous owners, and can I nominate this lady for worst taste in names ever? EBONNEEK for a black Arabian. I just… I don’t know. It’s like she searched Wikipedia for her names or something, then misspelled them all.
An old post about trying to sell Carousel Hilal from this lady. He’s also listed with Al Khamsa arabians.
There’s a post on your older post about My Cygnature, with a phone # of someone who owned him and would like him back. micah1 is the author.
Saud El Quahtahn is from a MO breeder and used to stand there, and there are a few posts about him on http://www.arabianbreeders.net I can’t get into.
This gal has a mare that was bred to DP Black Dominic quite a lot, and I’m not sure whether the horses name is Hastra La Vistra or Vistra, but here’s his dam. (NM, I just read on their about me page that they bought these mares from Darlene.) Anyway, this horse has been “busy” from the number of daughters he has out there. There’s a post about someone breeding to him on AWhiteHorse.com, but I can’t get to that either.
Black Pearl Arabians have TAHARA SAHIB listed on their website, but that might just be b/c they have daughters from him. They might take him if he needs to be moved.
SUMMERS CONTADA has a daughter with 56 USDF points, and GC Satin Doll has a 7 time Nationals winning son.
Finishing the list:
There’s a Sylk Stockings son who’s a National Champion cutting horse, but Darlene’s mare’s number has an H in front (which means half arab, right?) so it might be a different mare.
Mi Alegra used to be owned by this farm.
Goggle wasn’t helpful on any other names. Hope this helps!
Half-Arabian registry numbers are prefixed with an A; a half-Arabian with just an A, and more than half with a number indicating how many crosses to Arabian + A. Well, that’s confusing.
IOW:
Half-arabian number = A######
3/4 Arabian number = 2A#####
7/8 Arabian number = 3A#####
and so on.
The Datasource says she currently owns 108 horses and has bred 124 – of course that’s just how many are registered. The bloodlines I looked at showed mostly Egyptian/Polish crosses with nothing spectacular until the 4th or 5th generation.
What a damn shame. I would LOVE to have some of those horses in my barn.
Update on the 73 Morgans seized:
http://www.yourspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=give_spotlight
The last part of that article really got to me. Just give you more to think about. Very sad.
i cannot even describe how this pains me. i have seen some of those horses showing, in better days. the last paragraph made me cry. we all hope it won’t be “our” breed, but there are none immune. i guess i should have some comfort in knowing that many morgan folk will step up to help, that’s more than a lot of poor horses have going for them.
I hope everybody reads that article, especially her defenders who will say she is being “unfairly” harassed.
Again, unfair my you-know-what. Sorry. I have YET to see an “unfair” neglect prosecution. I’m almost 43 and I’ve NEVER seen one turn out to be unjust. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen but it appears to be as rare as the Loch Ness Monster. By the time you get your horses seized, YOU ARE GUILTY AS SIN AND A DOZEN PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT!
“I have YET to see an “unfair†neglect prosecution.”
I have, I’m sorry to say — an event that turned MANY people into skeptics about rescues and animal protection. Apparently motivated by greed — both by some who wanted the owner’s property and by a “rescue” group that thought they could sell the valuable animals for Big Bucks — Actual photos show the condition of the horses on the day they were “rescued” (very good to excellent) and when they were returned — 100 to 300 lbs underweight. Mares aborting. Feet never touched in the months they were gone. A veterinarian so useless he testified that Arabian yearlings were STUNTED ADULT horses.
I have seen some other rescues that appeared more motivated by the desire for promotion than for a genuine desire to help.
Now, I agree that defenders of this Morgan owner are clearly either unable to see the photos or owe her money. But just as there are “rescue farms” not deserving of the name, there are ineed unfounded charges of neglect.
Any horse that we’ve brought in that has been thin or even one mare who we were advised to put down for her condition were thoroughly documented so we had proof we got them that way if a problem ever came up. Never had to use it yet, but then again, we obviously weren’t the ones that put them in this condition.
Is there anything extra we can do as locals?
I know this is one thats been going on for years, but is there any way to push it forward a bit faster now that it has gotten some attention?
My understanding is that Ripley’s Horse Aid is going to be providing foster care, so you can contact them if you can foster, or make a donation:
http://www.freewebs.com/rhaf/
This just kills me. I love Arabians and would love to have any one of those horses in the barn I ride at. Yet, she just treats them garbage. Like I said, just kills me . . .and breaks my heart.
I hope those horses are put into good foster homes and get a chance to actually enjoy their lives.
How is it that all these people come up with the same lame-ass excuses? Sure, the economy is crap, but did the magic horse fairy dump all those horses on your property one night? Who needs 100+ horses anyway? Does she even have a job? She sounds like the sort that would sit on her ass all day, begging for donations while her horses starve.
I’ve never heard of her having a job. I HAVE heard that the situation out there has been well-known to be bad for many years – at least 8. The economy was not this bad 8 years ago. It is not like she got downsized a year ago like everybody else. Those horses have been thin and ill-cared-for for a very long time and she has refused to lower prices to disperse them, and keeps making more. She claims she was giving them away two weeks ago – really? Where is this posted? Who did she try to give them to? Nonsense. There are horses I will send someone to pick up today if she is indeed GIVING them away.
An reader from outside of America, and unfortunately going a bit off topic because I wonder if you could help me.
I’ve jumped into horses, having been encouraged to dive by one of my online friends. But I’m still a bit lousy in the conformation and how well-bred horses look like, while I got the color genetics down to an art. Any blog or a website of sort that can showcase the conformation of horses, or even make a showcase of “Good VS Bad” of either breeds or color? I understand that the Fugly Horse of the Day is very popular, though the name is a bit of a misnomer as I had expected to see what I’m looking for at this site.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? In sort, I’m looking for a site that takes images of real horses, showcases any conformation points, no matter if it is of the good spectrum or the bad, or even shows difference between well bred horses vs bad bred horses of the same breed.
If you go back to the first year of columns, you’d see a lot more of the conformation entries. I kind of ran through all those topics the first year and then had to expand!
I have learned a lot from one particular book that not only speaks of conformation but the best jobs for a particular horse (making for a happier horse) and training suggestions to help make a weakness in conformation turn into better health for the horse. I love the book because the author is helping us with the horse that is in front of us instead of the quest for “perfection”. Also, i.e. we would not want to ask certain conformations in hocks and pasterns to become our jumper. I don’t think I am allowed to mention specifics here on Fugly but maybe I could suggest a search for conformation and performance by an author that is the opposite of “hating”. LOL. This book is recognized by many as an excellent source of info.
Go ahead and cite the author and title. Don’t see why that would be a problem unless the author is one of those “do as I say and not as I do” folks when it comes to horsecare…
The book is titled “Conformation and Performance” by Dr Loving and costs around $24. It is excellent source because each page shows example pictures of good and bad and also training suggestions and suitable jobs for the horse that is in front of you. Her introduction says it all, IMO. A good horse will give his/her all but may suffer in the future if we do not understand conformation weaknesses and precondition, when necessary to lessen damage. Good care combined with good understanding helps us to have a happy and healthy horse well into old age…….(their’s and our’s).
I just read where they put an endurance horse down at 38 years old after thousands and thousands of miles (record setting milage) IMO, that owner is a good example of horsemanship. Last ride was 2 years ago. The horse was unable to get up in a snowy field so they lovingly euthanized there. The story that partnership tells us sounds like a beautiful one…
Rosetta, I’ve found Dr. Deb Bennett to be helpful:
http://www.equinestudies.org/
There are some great articles about functional conformation on her site.
She’s been doing a good series in EQUUS magazine too.
Here’s some good information, and if you scroll down to the Related Articles, there’s even more:
http://www.equisearch.com/horses%5Fcare/health/anatomy/conformationfaults110299a/
Practical Horseman magazine runs a Conformation Clinic column every month that’s helpful. I’m sure some of those are online too, on equisearch.com
Good luck! I was fortunate to participate in a few years of judging through my 4H club when I was a teenager, and it’s served me well ever since.
Oh fugs, the endless reading material on craigs list…..The second one is a local neval base auctioning some of the riding horses they have off……I just love it!!!
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/grd/1670779919.html
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/grd/1670758464.html
How are they going to verify that you arent a dealer or meat buyer when their policy is cash and carry? I never understood why oceana had so many draft/crosses in their program anyways. Just seems like they could find a better way to thin the herd that highest paying cash gets them.
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/grd/1670144087.html
And bless her heart she has just plain lost her mind on the asking price!!!
http://www.buysellcommunity.com/sale/AJFSOQAV/
Ran across another special that Im sure the chick you talked about today had a lot of happening in her fields too…the 4yo son “stud” standing in the field with his mom. Has a really nice filly on the ground, gee I wonder if its out of his mom???!!! At least they both look well fed, which is more than I can say for todays arab hoarder/breeder chick.
What is that photoshopped out in that picture behind the mare? Makes you wonder…
Maybe the resulting filly from mother/son has been photoshopped out? Scary.
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
Yeah Im guessing the filly too, Not sure why they Photo shopped her out? Maybe so people wouldnt be confused which horse they where trying to sell. I would also like to state that it looks like mommy is in foal again
gotta love it!
I’ve got my money on it being the filly who was the result of the colt breeding his mother. I’m guessing they photoshopped her out so that they don’t get hundreds of angry replies about how irresponsible they are. Also, when they try to sell the filly I’m sure they’ll make some crap up about why they don’t know her lineage (“she was a rescue”). Baby pictures of her with her inbred family would blow their cover.
Sires and dams of some of these horses would be a big help, so that I can contact trainers and owners who may be interested in fostering or adopting them. I am really not tech savvy enough to try to find that info. Reading Fuglyblog is about the limit of my computer knowledge. I will, in the mean time, put the word out about this with my Arab trainer colleagues.
I’ve rerun the report to show dam and sire.

Thank you for that info. I will pass it along. Unfortunately I don’t see anything remarkable upon first glance. Like Fugly says, it is much easier to find homes for the horses that you breed if there is something spectacular up close in the pedigree.
OMG. I just realized that she changed her farm name to Carousel. If you Google Carousel Farm and Arabian you will likely find the wrong Carousel. Carousel Farm in New Jersey takes very good care of their horses. It is NOT the same farm, or affiliated in any way.
No, it’s not. Also, Darlene spells it Carrousel, FYI.
It was Mashallah Stud with a web site and everything when I first blogged about her in October 2008.
I didn’t even look that closely. I just envisioned friends of mine getting a ration of sh*t from well-meaning people who found the wrong contact info.
I’m stretching my memory here, but I think that Darlene’s Carrousel Farm had a barn fire 12 years or so ago. Does anybody else in the area remember that??
Remember this blog from last August?
http://fuglyblog.com/?p=989
She pled guilty to two counts of animal cruelty. Don’t ask me why only two. She got two years of jail (suspended), $1,000 civil penalty, $450 court costs, $7644.16 restitution to Hooved Animal Rescue, all animals forfeited to Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County effective immediately, and no more ownership or possession of horses, goats, sheep, or ponies for her lifetime.
Interestingly it was this allegedly “unfair prosecution” which led to the formation of the completely LUDICROUS “Stockman’s Coalition” in the area. http://www.stockmens-coalition.org/Home.html
Folks, the last thing we need is a group to PROTECT the bad seeds in our industry. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to protect the HORSES!
I have YET to see an “unfair prosecution” involving animal cruelty. Still waiting to see one. Haven’t seen it yet!
Once in a while what appears to be a starving animal is an animal naturally refusing food because of normal aging.
Does this scream lazy and cheap? God, I swear there’s an excuse for everyone who wants to sit on their ass and do nothing. Just blame it on the horse since they can’t talk. Get up off your lazy butt, pry open that wallet, float some teeth, worm regularly (good wormer), feed some quality hay (the right amount) daily.
My 25yo OTTB doesn’t look a day over 16 and works 5 days a week. He eats just fine. His weight if fine.
People like these just makes me want to slap them upside the head to get their lazy butts moving. Grrrr.
I agree! My 29 year old Arab Mare looks AWESOME and still loves to go on trail rides. But again she goes through a bag and a half of senior feed a week, has had her teeth floated and checked yearly, not to metioned wormed, vaccinated, ect….,.
I do not want to hear the excuse that they are in that condition becuase they are OLD!!
I went rounds with my local AC about 2 Arab mares that were in 11 and 12 years old. The people had 4 horses, 2 morgans and the 2 arabs. The Morgans were in their late teens looked wonderful and the two Arabs, looks like a rack
of bones! When AC went out there the people lied and said the Arab were the older ones…long story short, I had to explaine nicely of course to AC that they Arabs were NOT the ones ( I knew these horses, so new how old each of them were) that old and even if they were that is NO excuse why they were in that condition.
I just really wish that AC around here had some sort of horse knowlege….very very frustrating.
They finally after weeks and weeks of many phone calls, by a lot of peoplel not just me, AC convinced the owner that they had to feed the horses seperately because the morgans were pushing the arabs away from the food. DUHHHHHHHHHHh!!!!!!
Heck, my friend kept her ooold pony in good health and weight (he did have a sway back, but what do you expect of a pony that was at LEAST in his mid forties and had worked his entire life) when the grand total of teeth remaining in his mouth was three. For years. He did fine on thoroughly soaked hay and senior. And grapes. And raisins. (Grapes make a great treat if you have a toothless old guy that can’t chew carrots any more). He died of old age about a month ago…still in healthy weight, still sound.
It *can* be a bit harder to keep good weight on an old horse, as they don’t absorb nutrition as well as they did when they were younger, but if you feed stuff formulated for old guys, keep their teeth as best you can (if they have any) and take steps to make food easy to chew and digest, they’ll be fine. She has a LOT of old horses and not a one of them is thin.
Only once have I seen a horse refuse to eat for no apparent reason. He was given to us by family members of the owner after she passed and they knew nothing about the horse and didn’t want to be bothered with him. He wouldn’t touch the feed we gave him, only picked at the hay and grass was not an option since it was in the dead of Ohio winter. What else could we do besides assume he just didn’t want to eat because of age and no appetite? Well, we pried open our damn wallets, called the vet for a thorough work-over and (with the vet leading the way) began trying different feeds, hays and supplements to find out what the horse WOULD eat. Well I’ll be damned if we didn’t have that horse eating in a week. He is an odd bird though. Won’t eat more than 1.5 lbs of grain per feeding, he will leave extra grain in the bucket. Also won’t touch his feed if you top-dress with supplements or medicine and will only eat the grain you get at Sam’s Club in the red bag (which sucks because they stopped carrying it in my area, luckily we found something similar and planned ahead to get him switched over). Give him anything besides timothy/alfalfa mix and it gets used for bedding. He also hates apples but will mug you for a rice crispy treat. Wierd horse. If I had known they just don’t eat because of normal aging I could have saved alot of time and money (kidding of course).
We had one of these oddball non-eaters — a mare we owned from the time she was a weanling. She was a big rangy ASB/Arabian cross, and in her mid-20s she turned into Morris the Cat. Unlike the horse mentioned above, she changed her mind *constantly* about what sort of food she considered edible. Of course, she had dental care, blood work, and everything else — at all times during her looooong life. We finally provided a smorgasbord — FOUR kinds of feed — at every meal. She would generally eat from a different tub at every meal. She was never really FAT — she wasn’t shaped that way — but she carried decent healthy weight well into her 30s. (And was the dam, granddam, and great-granddam of multiple national winners.)
This fear of being attacked physically or verbally is one of the reasons that the Santa Rosa County Animal Services takes calls from the SRC Horse Assistance Council as the source of reports of horse abuse. Anyone can call or contact us via our web site or e-mail and we can take the report and turn it in as SRCHAC and no one must give their own names. The reporter must, however have a good address or we can’t do anything.
The closest I have heard of an unfair seizure was the the Chicago Carriage Horses. And that was the city of Chicago.
Off topic perhaps and NOT a training “tip” but if you have an unbroke horse fighting being led, turn around and let him/her fight and back where you want to go! This is an emergency use only-when you GOTTA get that unbroke horse somewhere.
There was one time a lady called the cops on a place I worked because the sheep (big and wooly) didn’t have coats, were out in the rain and their shed had 2 sides open….
But it seems to me anybody could look at a horse and see when it needs feed!!
I got the cops called on me for abandoning my horses at a restaraunt once. There is a multi-use trail I have access to from my barn that runs through town and one of the restaraunts has horse ties behind it and even a small trailer parking area. A friend and I rode down for lunch, tied my horses at the tie rails (my horses have been making this trip for years and are also long-time camping horses who have very used to being on picket lines-not the type that act up when tied) and had a nice, long, relaxed lunch. Came out to find the police there responding to a call about abandoned horses, and the jackass that called had actually untied my big gelding and was jerking him around by the bit trying to lead him. He actually gave me a lecture about tying my horses, even though he was obviously one of the city-transplant non-horsey yuppies that have been plagueing my area lately. Luckily one of the cops was a horseman too, and sent the guy packing. Unfortunately there was a barn 4 miles down the trail notorious for not feeding their horses that could have actually used the call, but I’m sure he never noticed them.
Stuff like that does happen – silly calls like that sleeping horses are dead – but my point was that you do not see PROSECUTIONS for silly reasons. Silly calls and “revenge” calls – oh sure. All the time.
The Chicago carriage horses are the only thing I can think of that even comes close. I’d say silly prosecutions are pretty much non-existant considering how hard it is to get an actual abuser prosecuted. I’m sure it happens, but they are few and far between. We actually had a dead pony sleeping incident too. 30-something year old arthritic Hackney pony that LOVES to sunbathe and WILL NOT get up until she is good and ready. Found some woman from the subdivision next door in the pasture screaming at her, dragging on the halter with all her might and in total hysterics. Before I got across the pasture the fire department was rolling down the driveway. I walked up to little May-May, clicked at her and told her to get her ass up and waved a carrot under her nose. She stood up, nipped the woman on the wrist, snatched the carrot out of my hand and trotted off. The firefighters laughed at the bogus call and the lady was dumbfounded, she thought for sure the pony was dying. It was so much nicer when the subdivisions next to us were corn and soybean farms.
My QH gelding is NOTORIOUS for scaring the stuffing out of people with his ‘dead horse impression.’
I’ve gotten to the point where I warn not only the barn managers, but also staff and even the neighbors if we move to a different barn.
He will lay there and completely ignore you if he’s sleeping(and he’s quite the napper), he might crack an eyelid when you get within 4 or 5 feet, but thats about it. He also does the running dog thing in his sleep, so I’ve had people think he’s having a seizure. Spastic gelding.
The running dog thing- that would be hilarious! I have never seen a horse do that. My mom showed me an internet video of a dog waking up while in the middle of a running dream, he ran into a wall and nearly knocked himself out. Poor dog, but he was ok after he woke up and it was sooo funny. Wish I could find it.
As an AC officer I thank you for your comments. It is tough to investigate complaints when the only thing you have to go on is anonymous complaints from a friend of a friend who has a friend who has seen it. The more I have to go on , the better it is for me to get in and help these animals. Having witness that will testify in court helps a great deal too, it presents a stronger case. It can also help me get a warrent to inspect if property access was denied by the owner. Unless impoundment is exigent the horses will be left on the property with a notice to comply/correct. The animal owner has rights and it’s important not to overlook them. Failure to observe their rights can get your whole case being thrown out. As Fugs mentioned before if it looks like a large impound may become necessary it is good to know we will have a place to house the animals. Volunteers with housing and transportation are necessary, Most agencys do not have the space to house more than 5 horses. If you do volunteer to house the animals to keep in mind that they are evidence, they can not be transferred or moved to another location till the case ends. Sometimes the horse owner may be allowed some animals back, so you will be asked to give back the animals. We can not control the outcome of all cases but the one thing is sure, without a complaint nothing gets done to help these animals.
OT but Oh for fuck’s sake!

If you can’t do anything else- breed it breed it breed it then throw it away! At least they can spell…
Fugly thanks for posting this, and thanks to everyone who is helping to try to place these horses. I hope asshat Patricia Clark doesn’t get her hands on any- her dozen (or more) personal arabs get no training/attention (except when she’s breeding them). They are NOT rescues, even though they share all the donated feed and money and she likes to toss a personal arab into her “rescue” group to “adopt” it out. Examples- BellaMia and Mirage were both arabs advertised on her Cavalia Website (she still has that business, her site seems to be down) and now they are miraculously rescues belonging to Serenity Equine Rescue (SERR). Has she gelded anything besides her Arab stud who got the 2 rescues pregnant? Not that anyone has heard of- she still has Dante the one-balled fugly-friesian.
My 29 year old retired from the track at age 3 and retired from dressage/hunter/jumper at 21 and now my trail horse thoroughbred is the poster child for our Horse Assistance Council to show everyone that a 29 year old need not be a rack of bones. We tell everyone when they comment on how great he looks that he is 29, usually the comment is that all the older horses they have seen have been skinny. I just say that is unacceptable. He is doing a great job as a poster boy – He had his photo made with Captain Jack Sparrow yesterday. If I can get a copy to load, I will put it on this site.
At the barn where I board my fat little hussy of an Arabian is a mare who is almost blind and well into her 30s. Her owner is elderly and mostly bedridden, visiting once every few months just to pet and give cookies.
The old mare is beautiful: always fed, vetted, blanketed as necessary, and could pass for half her age except for some creakiness in her movements. Why? Her owner loves her, and willingly pays for her care; she chose this otherwise very modest barn because the owner keeps a close eye on all the horses and alerts us owners well in advance of any problems he sees coming. He is happy to medicate and clean feet as necessary. He watches for any bullying, and switches horses around as necessary to assure that they play nice. He adjusts feed amounts and mixes all the time, making sure everyone gets plenty and looks great. The best farrier in the county – one who hasn’t taken on a new client in years – comes regularly because the barn owner makes sure he is paid faithfully. The old mare is content, healthy, and has friends. Her owner pays the bills promptly, happily and in full. As simple as that.
It’s amazing how good the old-timers can look if you *gasp* take care of them. Like old Trigger here:

He is a 100% sound little air fern of a Shetland gelding, at 38 years old! Our BO has owned him for a whopping 32 years, talk about a lifer! He has started 3 generations of her family in the saddle, and will still teach the little ones what not to do when messing around with him on the ground.

what else can be done?
See ive both called the authorities on a horse, and gotten them called on me…
First when I got called was RIGHT after I had gelded my pinto colt. He was a grey and white paint and had WHITE legs. Well the day after I took him out to hose off his legs (they were bright red) and was holding a whip (because I had only had for two weeks and we were still working on manners). A person drove by three-four times slowing down every time. I didnt think anything of it until the sheriff showed up the next day asking to see my horse. I said of course and led him out. He asked me why his legs were bloody and I said “well he was gelded two days ago” and told him to look at his swollen genitalia area. He did and said for the report he needed to see a vets reciept (which I had kept ahold of in the barn) brought it out and showed the date and everything. He laughed and said “I figured that’s what it was, but we got a call saying that there was a girl beating a horse with a whip and he was bloody” I told him that I did have a whip with me because he was still working on respect. He nodded and left. I thought it was funny. But I was happy that someone was watching in case of abuse.
The time I called AC was I had my horse in my dad’s pasture and next to me was a pretty palomino paint thats feet were curling up, he was limping and had a HOLE in his back that fly’s were coming in and out of. I was worried and could never catch the owner there to ask her what was going on so I called the sheriff. He came out the next day, checked it out and told her that he wanted a vet check of that hole and that the feet needed to be done within the next week or she was getting a citation. She was pissed. BUT it got taken care of and while I was there he never lapsed on his feet or care.
But I think that if you see abuse and don’t do anything you are JUST as guilty as the person that is doing it. It takes two type of people to allow abuse. The ones who do it, and the ones who sit there and allow it to happen!
I forgot to add that the horse was BOARDED on the property and the property owner had NO PROBLEM with the sheriff going back there to check it out… they had tried evicting the girl more then once and were about ready to sell the horse to the highest bidder to get it out of there if she didnt start caring for it. They thanked me up one side and down the other. The girl claimed that there was “nothing wrong with the horse” and that the owners of the property were biased. It took a call from a knowledgeable horse person to finally get her act together.
Oh man. I wondered if she still had Konfettis Miraj. I leased and stood her sire, KS Konfetti for a while. I don’t know how I can help– I live in BC– but if I can, let me know.
I used to live with the back of my property along a hiway. Several times had the police stop to ask about the “dead horses” in the field. Usually when there was a new sleeping foal. Funny..nobody ever complained about the big draft horse with no hair standing in the same field. I was always surprised that nobody accused me of not taking care of Harry.
I walked them out several times to only see the horses miraculously come back to life and run to the fence.
OT but for kicks and giggles I went on DreamHorse and found this gem with “Pony with gates of a big horse!”
http://www.dreamhorse.com/show_horse.php?form_horse_id=1493559&share_this=Y
“Archie is a pony with great personality! His ground manors are excellent, he is a people pleaser, loves to be handled. He is broke to both English and western, comfortable with either. Archie has incredibly big gaits, his trot in particular, please see video.Great dressage project! He has the hypoallergenic coat of a Curly”
Price: 950
They claim he’s broke, but the video is of him on the lunge, going in one direction. Yes, he has a nice reach at the trot but his headset and flagging tail disqualifies him from doing well in hunter and western pleasure classes.
I wonder if he was tested for a hypoallergenic coat or he just has a curly texture?
Oh, and a little dog of some sort runs out in the middle of the video.
Forgot to include this one as well…

What is it with people and obvious photo shopping (and not proof reading)?
I am selling this mare due to the fact I cant afford her any longer. I really think she needs a better rider then myself. She is the best horse I have ever trained and owned. She does everything I ask and trys her heart out.Once you get use to the feeling of this mare you could be winning many blues and cash. She loads bathes and great when it comes to shaving her hooves. 100% respect on the ground. She needs an expr rider In the barrel world because she loves to run but knows her job she needs a strong hand. Could be placing with the top horses. In the English world She jumps courses up to 2’3ft but schools anywhere to crossrails to 3ft with no issues. he needs at lease an inter when it comes to riding english.Shes a diffrent horse when it comes to putting an english saddle and a western saddle on shes very clam in the english ring and can adjust speeds.Nice mare for a really nice deal her price was $3500 but reduced for a fast sell. May take payments as long as shes stays at my house intell payed off Have a great day! PIC LINK http://tmkphotography.zenfolio.com/p790979935/h2ae058ae#h2ae058ae VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMjXMTsKR6E WILL SALE WITH ALL ENGLISH AND WESTERN TACK
“Shaving her hooves”?!
Nothing more unsightly that those embarassing hoof mustaches on mares. You know, kinda like those dark hairs us women get on our upper lip? C’mon ladies, you know just about all of us have a little ‘stache growing… I wax about once a week, or just shave it if I’m feeling lazy and have a new razor out.
Well hes a cute little snot, but if hes broke to ride at 6 years old then I would really like to see some one riding him instead of “Dunder the liberty pony”. Shame he isnt local Might would haggle him down, put some fine tuning and miles on him then get him an UPGRADE!!! Complete with a new show name like Aint I Arty Smarty or something cute like that
LOL….I was wondering when the SERR “situation” was going to creep back on fugly. I am frustrated that rescue horses are getting pregnant there by mistake (though fences or due to a gate left open….huh?). Do donaters plan on supporting those babies too? If one cannot keep their stallions from covering the mares on the property, rescue or otherwise, dont have stallions! And when a mare that gets accidentally pregnant there is PAST safe breeding age, thats getting into serious ignorance territory.
I believe anything with Pico in the name will lead back to the horses of the Hearst Ranch in Cambria, California. They may be interested in seeing the bloodline not go down the tubes (as it were). I don’t know if that mare was sold to her or on a long term lease or if they ever got her back. (I need to renew my Datasource subscription, but a new water heater came first). Thank G** there aren’t any Gokart’s or Bandos in this mess
I was unsure about mentioning titles/authors as I am a long time reader but first time commenter.
The book is Conformation and Performance by Dr Loving. I also appreciate Deb Bennett’s books as they are very informative. However, I think the average horse owner might benefit from Dr Loving’s book because of the format which is each page shows an example of either good or bad conformation with training suggestions and suitable jobs for that particular horse. Easy to read and use. I also appreciate her introduction because it deals with each horse as an individual instead of just judgements of what is good and bad. As we all know, we can look at a horse and think he/she may be just a plug and then the spirit of that horse shows us something different. I also like it because we may have a horse with a heart and mind to do a job but it will lead to unsoundness and pain in the future for that horse without proper preconditioning and consideration for conformation weaknesses. Sometimes lameness can be prevented by education of ourselves. A good horse will give his/her all to us but we need to ask for what is reasonable for the horse that is in front of us and take steps to precondition. We can do that better if we understand conformation weaknesses. Dr Loving’s book costs about $24 which is cheap information, IMO.
Well I for one am extreemly happy Darlene’s “mess” is finally being brought to the public eye! Especially after all these years and who knows how many lives lost. Here is a link to the stallion that is standing at “Mashallah stud”, http://ravinwood.com/stallions.htm This person has stood up for Darlene on numersous occaisions.
OT:
A while back (years ago?) there was a story about a downed, incurable horse that law enforcement was trying to get euthanized though the owner “refused to give up”. Does anyone have the link to that? I’ve searched through the blog and can’t find it.
I remember that too…the horse had been down for days. What WAS that woman’s name?
More on Wilson:

Regarding Darlene Wilson, I live in the same neighborhood and every year watch those poor horses starving. For the past couple years me and my neighbor have taken pictures and gotten statements and filed complaints. This has been going on for at least 10 years, most people in this area remember her from 20 years ago. ( ive lived here for 4 yrs.)Finally something is being done. One of my neighbors lives next door to her pasture and actually witnessed her tie a dead foal to its mother & make her drag it to the barn! there is a rumor that she has friends in animal control. Not sure if that’s the case, but every year they come out and give her another chance. She starts feeding for a while then back to starving. I have to drive by her field to the main road, its disgusting. One of our riding friends has a mare from there & another bought a stallion. You should hear their descriptions of the horror inside the barns. Never seen such clean pastures, absolutely no poop! Know why,the horses eat it! I’ve seen them.
This makes my blood boil. I would do absolutely anything to help these horses, and I would die to have any of the KS Konfetti horses. I knew him, rode him, handled him, etc and I love that horse and the offspring he produces. Konfetti’s Miraj is an incredible mare, too. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
I was searching for some information and stumbled acrsos your page and was wondering why you are looking for the horses that Darlene Wilson once owned?
