They got convicted a year ago.   Craig Heydon, 71, was sentenced to 10 months in jail and fined $5,800 while his son Curtis was sentenced to 11 months in jail and fined $6,400. Both men were also ordered to forfeit ownership of the horses to the humane society and pay all restitution. But they went whining to their lawyers to appeal. Poor us! It’s not faaaaaair.
Â
Â
Well, the appellate court just said it sure as hell was fair. LMAO. Now you two morons are not only still guilty, but you blew a LOT of money on legal fees.  Heh, heh, heh.   You know, it’s one thing when ignorant idiots do things like this, but you boys have been to college and own companies and stuff. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/craig-heydon/8/484/290   So I guess you thought you were above the law, but guess what? You’re not. People always tell me, oh, you can’t do anything to the rich. They just hire the right lawyers and get off. This is a good example of money not being enough – the Heydons didn’t get off, and they definitely tried!  Â
Â
Â
“Neither of you has taken any responsibility for your actions,†[Judge] Bailey said. “It’s unbelievable that you can blame the horses, law enforcement and the Bitter Root Humane Association for what’s happened.â€
Â
I agree, Your Honor! And I’m so super thrilled that you threw the book at these arrogant twits! The horses of America and all of the good horse owners thank you!
Â
Â
When I transferred this blog from Blogger, it apparently ate September of 2008, so I’m just reprinting the original blog entry here for those of you who missed the story:
Curtis and Craig Haydon, come here…
I want to show you how it feels to get kicked in the nuts by a woman in pointy-toed heels!Â
And before they use this as a defense: IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE! You want to go “live off the land,” go do it and go starve to death or fall in a hole and die like every other asshat suburbanite who should have realized his survival skills stretched no further than “roughing it” at the Motel Six. BUT LEAVE THE ANIMALS OUT OF IT!
OK, Someone out there knows these sad excuses for human beings. It’s your job. I want them publicly humiliated in every way known to man. Go to their church? Great, tell everybody what they did. Print off the web page! Live in their neighborhood? Awesome! Make sure all the neighbors know the whole story!
Craig Heyden lives in Roswell, Georgia. Curtis Heyden lives in Woodstock, Georgia.
The Rocky Mountain Rider really did a great job covering this case and not letting anyone forget about it. You have to report things to animal control or the sheriff, but media coverage does not hurt either. Never give up. The more convictions, the more impact!
Â
Â
On a happy note – for those of you looking for a show prospect, check out Angel Acres’ Tango! I love this guy. He just has a nice, kind, “I’m going to be a great amateur horse” way about him.
I don’t care if you are a person who has lived under a rock all their life, when you see any animal that is covered with bleeding sores and who is skinny, you KNOW it’s not right. To read the article where he tells about not know anything about horses until the trip and why he shouldn’t be blamed makes my blood boil. I don’t know anything about llamas that are used on pack/hunting trips. But if the llama I bought to carry my gear, laid down, could no longer move, was bleeding and all it’s bones were showing, I wouldn’t beat it with a stick to keep going….I’d figure it was sick, tired, sore, maybe even dying, but I’d sure know SOMETHING serious was wrong with it. To leave it stranded along the trail to what….Recover? Fatten back up? Get healthy again? A rest might cure it of everything? Jesus might come and take it up to Heaven?….anyone with 1/2 a brain would know that wasn’t right, unless they left it briefly to go it it help. I hope that they get a jail cell crawling with nasty little critters that bite and make them miserable while they are there.
Unbelievable! If you are going to use an animal as they have it is YOUR responsibility to educate yourself on it’s proper care. I have zero patience with them now crying “it’s not faaaiiirrrr, I didn’t kknnoowww!” Idiots who, by their own admission, bought underweight horses in poor condition should have known that they were in no physical condition to undertake the trip. I’m curious about the part where they said that they bought several horse shoes and some nails….what the hell? Who was going to shoe the horses? Ignorant asshats. I’m really glad that the judge threw the proverbial book at them. We have yet to see if they will actually serve their time in jail though. What with legal appeals and such. Poor horses didn’t deserve what happened to them.
Can’t say enough good things about the gals who found the horses and then committed to getting out of there.
I’m pretty sure a lot of peole would have spoken to that idiot Heydon then shrugged and walked away, telling themselves he couldn’t possibly be thinking of leaving the mare in that condition. Way to go Q and Dawn!
…And way to go Judge!..Not sure I’ve read about many judges with the cohones to say the equivalent of “grow up dickheads!”
*does the happy dance* Huzzah! I thought the fact that it’s sunny outside (in the PNW, in February) had made my day, but this is even better. Now to write thank-you notes to the Judge… I’m so impressed that he ordered them to pay rehab costs, that doesn’t happen nearly often enough.
Well, they have been in there for two years and the mare has not had a foal yet, so I think that we can probably assume he is not entire………..
They do not look starving, but they don’t look brilliant either, and I have to say that the ad does nothing for my faith in the US education system!!!
I sure wouldn’t go jumping to any conclusions about his entirety without knowing more. There are many reasons a mare won’t conceive that have nothing to do with a male. I have seen geldings who mount too…sure would be nice if the owner knew, huh? Could help a potential buyer who could spend more than he is asking for the horses on a thorough vet exam.
I am a teacher and in our school everday and I do mean EVERYDAY students in grades K-8 do a daily edit. They are presented with sentences w/o capitalization, spelling errors and no punctuation or incorrect punctuation and the students job is to correct all mistakes. Our eighth grade teacher uses a lot of CL ads with her class so the kids realize that correct spelling and punctuation DO matter in the real world. The students really get a laugh from some of these ads and when asked if they would buy or hire the services of the person advertising they usually say “no” due to errors.
Good for you! In this economy, I imagine resumes with typos are being thrown right into the circular file. There is just too much competition and it’s an easy way to eliminate someone.
This has got to be one of the worst adds I’ve seen on CL…Those poor, poor horses.
He talks about barb wire, fence posts rotting off, doesn’t know if the “male” is a gelding or a stud..WTH!
I really hope someone helps these horses out. Wish I lived closer, I’m sure I could find something in my back yard he’d take for trade! lol
Wow, those two seem to have found the perfect blend of cluelessness, stupidity and arrogance. Their lawyer sounded like total fucktard too, saying the horses were supermodel thin in opening arguements. They were packing around people and gear, not prancing down a runway in haute couture! Good job on the judge and prosecuter’s parts though!
I’d like to take those dickwads out in the wilderness and make them pack my fat ass around for a few months, then pour grain alcohol in their sores while starving them and denying them water.
I’d say it depends on what part of Kentucky you are in. She is obviously from the part where men are men and sheep are scared, if you know what I mean!
Hopefully this will set some precedent in these animal abuse cases, especially when BNT’s are doing terrible things to animals. I don’t excuse non-BNT’s but I think they should be held to an even higher standard than average owners, because they sell their horse advice for profit. Actually, I think any horse related professional should be held to a higher standard…
Okay, I don’t know a newbie ten year old child that could damage these horses this badly. Do this guys not have the IQ that most cucumbers sprout with?
And further, he says he packed in 200 pounds of supplement…I can’t picture the four horses here going through that much in 90 days. I wonder what they were planning to do with the shoes, pitch them? Because their sheer idiocy in caring for these horses in no way leads one to believe they would be capable of correctly appliying shoes to a plank of wood, let alone a live hoof. People go to school for 12 weeks to learn to shoe a horse and these whackjobs can’t even feed the animals. Any kid in a petting zoo could have done better. I’m glad the judge wasn’t letting them pull the wool on him.
That’s what I was wondering—they took a bunch of extra shoes and nails with them, but no rasp, hoof knife, or easyboots? Not to mention, neither is a trained farrier, and I’d be willing to bet neither has even seen a horse being trimmed or shod–what did they think they were going to accomplish making those horses carry 50lbs of extra metal instead of a few easyboots?
The rescuer mentioned 2 of the horses had abcesses–I hate to even imagine, but what if the clueless morons just nailed on new shoes at random every time a horse went down?
I suspect they thought they could do it themselves.
Yeah, I really do just want to keep these two locked in a box and keep the world safe from them. God only knows what they’ll do next. They’re judgmentarded.
Got the girl’s name and ran a search, couldn’t find anything about her online. The poster stated in the email she has been convicted of neglect, small animals and horses. I could email you the name if you want to check it out but I wouldn’t want to post it in case it isn’t true. cowgirlup12203@aol.com
Well, I’m so happy for some great news on a crappy day. It’s so nice when things work the way it’s supposed to work, meaning the legal system.
I echo the thought about nasty little critters in their cells, the six legged kind and the two legged kind….
These guys had a level of deliberate ignorance that exceeded someone who is too dumb to put on their own pants! Here are links to the daily play by play:
Note the 25th in particular: “Finally, Heydon tied the horse to a log and wrote a note saying he’d be back in 24 hours. He left the saddle on guessing it would need the warmth when nightfall came.” The guy left the saddle the horse he abandoned so the horse would stay warm? OMFG! That is the lamest thing I have ever heard!
We could use military radio jargon and call this a “Whisky Tango Foxtrot” moment…!
Hooray for that judge! And he’s making them pay restitution–awesome–hit them in the only spot that gets their attention, the almighty wallet. That doesn’t seem like alot of time to get on the surface, but men frequently get less time for sexually assaulting a human, so I applaud that judge!
My question is, did the horses recover?
Now to mapquest and see how close the people I know in Georgia are to these asshats. It’s not slander if it’s true…heh heh.
I think these people should all be “shunned.” I know that I will not do business with anyone who abuses.. people, or animals..Money is short, right now..
As I recall, these two sub-humans went on their pack trip after the younger man’s wife had died of cancer. Given what we now know about the Heydons, she may have been glad to go…
ugh…I actually got my horse from a kill buyer. Long story but I was at an auction…bad idea yet again. I had never been to one and decided to go for educational reasons. Well I fell in love with my Charlie and no one had any info on him well I wanted him. They walked him around the ring and said he didnt have a coggins so they sold him to this dealer for 50 bucks! I went and spoke with him and asked him what he did with the horses and all he said was I just deal animals! It was so hard not to punch this ass monkey right in his face. So long story short I found the guys number after i got home and called him. he wound up selling him to me for 250 bucks. I feel terrible for supporting this dealer but I really didnt want to see my Charlie go to Canada or Mexico where ever he was headed. It was the hardest thing I had to do to deal with this guy when he brought Charlie. I just kept wondering how he can live with himself and how his wife can live with him. I was wondering what really goes on in their heads to make it all ok. I just dont understand how someone can have no feelings for another living being. Ya I offered to come get my horse and he didnt want me on his farm. I dont think I could have handled it at all. I will never again go to another auction again. Talking about the story brings tears to my eyes. It just breaks my heart, but Charlie is nice and healthy now and living the good life. He is adjusting very well and just being a horse.
That ad has been flagged but I’ll bet it is the same as the one labeled “Horse Buyers/Sellers” which has an angry rant against FOBs. But stopthesoringTWHgirl, the horse trailer is just equipment. It can be repaired or neglected… who cares? Unlike the horses…
I just found the price of $1050 pretty amusing, considering you can get a decent trailer that doesn’t look like a rolling death trap for that much now. That and it looked like something you would see those horses getting unloaded from at the local horse auction…at least in my area anyway.
Wow just Wow…..I dont understand how or why people do the things they do. they post things when they cant even spell….I check Craigslist every day in my area and I really shouldnt. Ya some of those ads are just wow.
The tattoo one made me laugh though because when I first read it, I saw “Need a horse or 2 for the wife. “… I thought he was wanting to trade his WIFE for a couple of horses!!! Hey, I would have beleived it.
Ignorance is everywhere, even right here in the horse capital of the world.
stopthesoringTWHgirl.. I like you!! I wonder if we know some of the same people…
Meant to add… that Arabian mare looks sweet and cute, in spite of her just being pulled out of the trailer to have her picture taken for the add (it looks like). Hope she can find a good home.
Very possible if you are in the Cincy/Northern KY area. We are up as a Satellite Barn on Hillbilly Farms webpage (B&B Stables) if you want to check it out and see if you recognize any of the usual suspects.
Oh thank GOD.
I remember writing a response letter to the prosecutor about this case on behalf of my fellow Backcountry Horsemen (Idaho Panhandle).
i am SO GLAD something has come of this!!!!
Great to hear that these two “men” have gotten the book “thrown at them” by the judge.
On a related topic– animal cruelty– Fugs have you all heard about the two 14 year olds who allegedly shot and killed two cows, and six horses in Leakesville, Mississippi a couple of weeks ago? They also wounded four horses that, according to the TV station report, had to be PTS because of their injuries. The cows were apparently killed first, then they came back to kill the horses at a few days later.
Well, anyway, there were two stories posted on the local TV station’s website– one original report, one follow-up interview with owner. In one report, the local sheriff was quoted as saying that they had two suspects who live less than a mile from the farm where these animals were killed, but it looked like it was a case of boys from the community who just did something stupid.
Well, it was announced that two 14 year olds had been arrested, but apparently the story was yanked from the station’s page. Wonder why??? No further info has been posted. Mississippi Equine message board has a few posts where people supposed that the boys in question must “belong” to some important or powerful family there.
These cows and horses were shot MULTIPLE times with bullets and arrows and left to die!! Come on Fuggly, this is really bad — every bid as bad as the guy in Louisiana who almost killed one horse. Help give this story and the local law enforcement people there the scutiny they deserve. Just do a search for “Leakesville horses killed by teenagers” and you’ll get the TV station’s website. Leakesville is in Greene County, Mississippi on the state line with Alabama. The TV station that reported about the killings is in Mobile, I believe. I have their site bookmarked, but don’t know how to make “links” when posting to your blog.
Can’t we tie pack saddles to those asshats backs and make them hike up and down the mountains with no food and water until they have sores so deep that their bones are exposed, and they’ve worn their shoes down to nothing and are barefoot? I think that the punishment should fit the crime.
ACLU? Heck, I AM a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and I can guarantee you that me and my commie pinko buddies will just turn a blind eye to whatever you want to inflict on these guys…they had their due process from the government! LOL!
I know, I know…really, you do have these moments where you miss the old west, where someone would simply have hunted them down and dished out justice. (Well, particularly with Monday morning’s entry!)
It seriously just boggles my mind that people think they can buy horses, know nothing about them and go pack them into the wilderness. It’s like that asshat attorney in Canada who helpfully left them some Gatorade to drink. WTF.
I’m a first time poster, long time reader, who registered just so I could share the following gem with people who I just know would appreciate it. I have to admit, it crossed my mind that someone here posted it as a joke but I’m afraid the horses involved are probably not that lucky!
I stumbled across it after someone posted it on another site:
Thats ok, I really think that add deserves a second post! Just hoping that someone with a big heart will take both horses before they get hurt in there.
I hope I did this right. Here is the stuff that shows in the little window at the top when you are reading the story. There is another story– the follow-up interview with the owner. I know you can’t find out the identities of juveniles, but you’d think you could at least find out IF they were charged, and with what. Suposedly, they were arrested. There was a story about that, becasue it comes up in a search, but it has disappeared from the stations website.
Funny how we can’t find out about stuff like this and who the perps are until AFTER the stuff like Columbine happens, huh? Then everyone runs around wringing their hands and moaning about why no one knew and the public wasn’t warned…and then when terrible things like that happen, still no death penalty, we have to pay for them unless they off themselves. We just don’t have enough jails or juvie centers to keep playing footsie with this sort. I think outing them publicly is the least they could do…and I sure hope they have to pay dearly for what they did besides that.
A life without parole sentence is actually cheaper. It costs much more to execute somebody than it does to jail them for life. This is because of things like the higher costs of the trial, security on “death row” and the endless *free* appeals they get. “Free” means we taxpayers fund them. Depending on which state you look at, EACH execution costs from 2 to 40 million. Here’s a better breakdown:
Juvies usually are charged with their initials; most court records are public, with certain details, such as the identity of minors, sealed. It is possible though, that there are not yet formal charges filed, in which case the investigative file will be locked up by the cops until something IS filed.
In some states, juvie names can be released if they are charged as an adult for a felony. Varies from state to state, usually have to be over 16, but in some circumstances can be 14 or even younger. (In my state, murder with a firearm will kick in the adult court statute at age 12! =:-O )
Unfortunately, I know nothing specific about Mississippi.
OT but an update on the Tania Herring Oregon horse seizure from the Albany, Oregon Democrat Herald newspaper on 2/27/10 – seizure originally featured in a past Fugly blog:
[quote from Albany Democrat Herald]
Mill City horses
The story: Thirty horses found to be severely neglected were rescued Jan. 21 from a ranch in Mill City. Linn County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at 1252 S.E. Fourth Ave. They found 116 horses, 60 to 70 of which were neglected or malnourished. Tania Herring, 30, leases the property known as Walker Ranch and runs the horse facility. She was cited at the scene for 30 counts of second-degree animal neglect and was scheduled to appear in court Feb. 24. She did not spend time in jail.
The latest: Herring was arraigned Wednesday on one count of first-degree animal neglect and six counts of second-degree animal neglect. Judge Glen Baisinger conditionally released her until her next court date. A pre-trial hearing is planned for Monday, March 15 at 1:15 p.m.
[END OF QUOTE]
Question for any/everyone: if there were 60-70 horses in bad condition – out of 116 horses on a shy 12 acres – and thirty were seized and she was cited on the scene for those 30, and all 30 were seized by the authorities, WHY is this woman charged with only ONE count of first degree and only SIX counts of second-degree animal neglect?
Anyone know who the vet is who is probably telling the DA that the horses that merited seizure just a couple of weeks ago aren’t bad enough to warrant more/stiffer criminal charges???
This woman still has dozens of horses on this small acreage and as well has a mother who has created a “truth about Tania Herring†website supporting Herring. Seems reasonably like what a mom might do for her daughter if said mom didn’t know diddly squat about horses in particular or animals in general. But – HEY MOM – YOU WOULD BE A BETTER MOM TO YOUR DAUGHTER by not emotionally enabling such an irresponsible brat to continue her evil ways!!!

So, wait, did those horses LIVE? Including Able?
They did. Here’s a pic of him just a few months later:

More stupid comments from the asshats in this article:

Holy cats. It will never cease to amaze me what an animal can live through.
I’m glad the poor things made it. I hope they never have to suffer again.

And oh dear God, I need to stop looking at craigslist:

Wow…just, wow.

How bout trading riding lessons for spelling and writing lessons? I’d be worried when the trainer can’t spell “saddle”.
She can’t even spell the town she lives in.
Or the name of her home town. Is “Indpendence” correct?
I’d say it depends on what part of Kentucky you are in. She is obviously from the part where men are men and sheep are scared, if you know what I mean!

Well, you usually dig a hole…like using a loading dock LOL.
What is APPR?
APPR = American Paint Pony Registry.

My question is, did the horses recover?
Now to mapquest and see how close the people I know in Georgia are to these asshats. It’s not slander if it’s true…heh heh.
All the horses survived but I don’t know if they have ongoing issues from their ordeal.
It really does defy any normal person’s ability to understand. How can you not see the condition deteriorating like that?
I think these people should all be “shunned.” I know that I will not do business with anyone who abuses.. people, or animals..Money is short, right now..
I believe that, 100%. One of the most powerful tools any of us has is our wallet.
As I recall, these two sub-humans went on their pack trip after the younger man’s wife had died of cancer. Given what we now know about the Heydons, she may have been glad to go…
good cheep mare: http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1621012958.html
maybe the kill buyer will take her: http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/
or you could breed her to this awsome stallion: http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1621246324.html
and what kind of conformation jackpot would you hit if you bred him to this mare: http://louisville.craigslist.org/grd/1619718246.html
along with this unregistered arabian broodmare: http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1621008534.html
and you could trade your fuglies for some tattoos: http://louisville.craigslist.org/grd/1620372951.html
and for just over $1000 you could haul them around in this bitchin’ trailer: http://louisville.craigslist.org/grd/1618790966.html
can’t say it enough-I LOVE CRAIGSLIST!
Sorry- here is the kill buyer: http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1621271586.html
ugh…I actually got my horse from a kill buyer.
Yay for you and Charlie!
I don’t understand how women can be with these guys, either. If all the men on earth were kill buyers, trust me, I’d switch teams!
LOL, if that mare is 16 hh, I could be Andre the Giant’s taller sister!
As for that trailer- sadly enough, in my area that would be considered to be a “nice” trailer. O.o
http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1621012958.html
Would she consider exchanging her mare for some commas and full stops (periods). She sounds like she is running short on
punctuation.
It’s amazing isn’t it….
And finally, I really CAN spell. It’s the typing with not yet enough coffee and on a slug of antihistamine that’s killing me.. LOL!!
Very possible if you are in the Cincy/Northern KY area. We are up as a Satellite Barn on Hillbilly Farms webpage (B&B Stables) if you want to check it out and see if you recognize any of the usual suspects.
I hope someone does something about that “cheep” mare…
What is up with that stud? Odd picture…at least the one in that same home town as our last spelling bee winner knew how to spell this time!
Oh thank GOD.
I remember writing a response letter to the prosecutor about this case on behalf of my fellow Backcountry Horsemen (Idaho Panhandle).
i am SO GLAD something has come of this!!!!
PUT THE CRAIGSLIST DOWN AND BACK AWAY WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!!!
LOL, the trailer is a big gas-saver because the bearings seize up after 100 yds.
(meant to reply to stopthesoringTWHgirl…)
I did not hear that story but is is ALWAYS hard to get info about youth offenders because the media won’t publish their names.
Just post the links, they’ll make themselves clickable.
Can’t we tie pack saddles to those asshats backs and make them hike up and down the mountains with no food and water until they have sores so deep that their bones are exposed, and they’ve worn their shoes down to nothing and are barefoot? I think that the punishment should fit the crime.
I’d vote for that. Half of us, mete out that punishment, and half of us have to go distract the ACLU.
ACLU? Heck, I AM a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and I can guarantee you that me and my commie pinko buddies will just turn a blind eye to whatever you want to inflict on these guys…they had their due process from the government! LOL!
Don’t forget to pour grain alcohol on their sores to “disinfect” them!
It seriously just boggles my mind that people think they can buy horses, know nothing about them and go pack them into the wilderness. It’s like that asshat attorney in Canada who helpfully left them some Gatorade to drink. WTF.
Here’s a great story. I hope they do this. Then we can check on a potential buyer’s/adopter’s status before passing on our horses.

I’m a first time poster, long time reader, who registered just so I could share the following gem with people who I just know would appreciate it. I have to admit, it crossed my mind that someone here posted it as a joke but I’m afraid the horses involved are probably not that lucky!
I stumbled across it after someone posted it on another site:
http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1619028086.html
Ooooops, nevermind. Apparently I didn’t refresh my page to see that someone else had already posted that CL ad. Back to lurking I go!

Educational aside:
A life without parole sentence is actually cheaper. It costs much more to execute somebody than it does to jail them for life. This is because of things like the higher costs of the trial, security on “death row” and the endless *free* appeals they get. “Free” means we taxpayers fund them. Depending on which state you look at, EACH execution costs from 2 to 40 million. Here’s a better breakdown:
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/COcosttestimony.pdf
Think what the states could do with that money.
Ruthie
