I’m declaring this Free Information Day!

SIDE NOTE FOR THE LOCALS HERE IN KING COUNTY: For horses’ sake, PLEASE vote for Susan Hutchison today! Dow Constantine will CLOSE Animal Control and then we’ll be begging the Sheriff for help with skinny horses. We all know how well THAT works. Unless you want things to get a lot worse for our animals, vote for Susan.

UPDATE – I just did a summary of the horses we still need info for on page 5 of the comments.

No time to write anything complicated today, but it just occurred to me that it’s a new month which means myself and every other AQHA member here has $10 of free searches, and I have access to the Jockey Club’s tattoo traces (that’s unlimited) so if you are trying to ID a Thoroughbred, or find out who the current registered owner is of a Quarter Horse, post your question here!

When I run out of AQHA credit, I’ll post and then someone else can jump in.
I know we have folks here with Datasource for Arabian horse questions, and I’m sure we have people with APHA access and other breeds, so don’t be shy. Post it if you want to know the answer!

Here is some ApHC (Appaloosa) info requested:

    “appychik says:
I’m wondering about two ApHC pedigrees…
First is Go Lady Go, a 1954 ApHC mare by Chief Apache out of Gold Digger Meyer. I’ve got her sire’s (Chief Apache) information all figured out but still haven’t gotten anywhere with her dam’s side. Any help would be appreciated.”

The only thing I got off the ApHC site on Gold Digger Meyer is:
    Reg #26750
Dun with spots over loin & hips
I have had good luck just calling the ApHC and asking them for info like sire, dam, foals, etc. so you might have luck that way. They’ve never asked me for my member # to do that.

“The other is hopefully visible here (see: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/sk+gringolet) not sure if that link will work, but it’s for my Andy/Appy, SK Gringolet. I’ve talked to his breeder but haven’t gotten anywhere. Wondering if anyone can fill in those holes… Princess Amber S (ApHC) – missing dam’s (J Bars Red Flame) sire/dam information; Lamar S R (ApHC) – missing dam’s (Bay Bonnie Braids) sire/dam information; Don Clevah (AQHA) – missing dam’s (Scare Along) sire/dam information.”

    J Bars Red Flame:
J Bars Red Flame is by Papa Red Boy who is by Double Patch and out of Toasty Bit (TB).
J Bars Red Flame is out of Chacalotta who is by Peacock’s Eagle and out of Sally E.
Double Patch is by Double Reigh (TB) and out of Kathy.
Toasty Bit (TB) is by Papa Red Bird and out of Out to Dine.
Peacock’s Eagle is by Red Eagle’s Peacock and out of Eagle Color.
Sally E. (ApHC ID) is by Snooper E. (AQHA) and out of Shorty E. (AQHA).

    Bay Bonnie Braids:
Bay Bonnie Braids (AQHA) is by War Chief by Joe Hancock.
Bay Bonnie Braids is out of Hepler’s Baby Doll by Chicaro Bill by Chicaro (TB)

    “knightwatch”
    Features Gold
    Reg#N 464061 foaled 5/9/87 Alabama solid palomino
Sired by Feature (ApHC) who is by Feature (AQHA) and out of No Razzle Dazzle.

    “Joe Bar Star
(Pedigree Please, I own this horse and do not have his paperwork, I really want to know more about his line. I’d also like to be aware of his HYPP status.)”

    Joe Bar Star
    Reg# 498942
    Foaled 4/1/92 in Nevada
Dark bay or brown, white with spots over back and hips
Joe Bar Star is sired by Joe Bar Too who is by Joe Bar and out of Walbar Redwing Hart
Dam is Pratt Pepper Girl who is by Box M’s Red Pepper and out of Pratt’s Star M.
Joe Bar is by Mr. J.B. who is by Joker B.
Joe Bar’s dam is Poco Bar Doe (AQHA) by Wiggy Bar.
Box M’s Red Pepper is by Flint Creek Redd Cloud and out of Crystal’s Sno-Drop.
Pratt’s Star M is by Dun Roven Chelsea’s Image and out of Pratt’s Sully Star.

“The Wonder Horse,” please email me at morganappaloosa@aol.com for photos and info on Joe Bar Star’s grandsire, Box M’s Red Pepper, as I grew up with him and have photos and info. I own one of Box M’s Red Pepper’s daughters and a grand daughter. Box M’s Red Pepper horses are exceptional family horses who can perform, too. My mom sold him to Alice Pratt for a short time before buying him back and owning him for the rest of his life. Alice Pratt bred Pratt Pepper Girl. It is hard to find a Box M’s Red Pepper so my jaw hit the floor when I brought up Joe Bar Star’s pedigree!

To Sells Bells RE: HYPP Status of GACHEMA GEFRANE APHA #420,898

Unfortunately APHA does not track HYPP status. However, I do not see anything in his pedigree to indicate he has any bloodlines that trace to Impressive.

    @ lacibird

I got excited but nope that wouldn’t be him. Your’s is George’s Cowboy and mine is GeorgIES Cowboy :)

Additional details on him if it helps: he was and likely still is around Ontario, Canada and is a chestnut leopard. Has a Halter ROM, was a Canadian Worlds qualifier… he was a stallion for a number of years and has quite a few (I think) offspring around but has since been gelded and retrained, doing english stuff now! He’d be… probably 15 or so now?

So again, any info on ApHC Georgies Cowboy specifically ownership would be much appreciated.

Would anyone be able to look up the breeder of Kelly Oak – 1986 palomino AQHA gelding. He was in our family from about 8-23 and was the most perfect horse anyone could ask for. I’m sure some of it had to do with his early training … we’d love to find them and see if they are still breeding/training.

  11. Ridingspots,

WOW. Well, I didn’t expect to meet someone who actually was affiliated with the relatives of my fella! I created a pedigree for him on allbreedpedigree.com and it filled out pretty nicely!

I also sent you a LONG e-mail with lots of info on Joe Bar Star to see if anything matched up!

Did he have any offspring? Does ApHC disclose that?

@turn-n-burn82com, imocr, Mrs P: THANKS ! I really appreciate your help.
My Gachema Gefrane daughter is a beautiful varnish red roan mare, her mother was an unregistered Appaloosa. Since I read so much about HYPP, I try to get as much information about my horses pedigree as I can, but I think, I just have to ask my vet for a HYPP test to be on the safe side. *deepsigh* (Sorry for any grammatical or other faults – my englisch is not that good when it comes to writing.)

    sweetlillena,
THANK YOU for your time. Just confirmed what I thought. :( I wonder if her papers didn’t go with her. The chances of a dealer finding a home for a horse like her, pretty slim. I wasn’t given any information to who the dealer was/is, I do have a hunch.
Thanks again, it is nice to have some sort of closure.

@mrs p: again, thank you for information. As far as I know, neither Gachema Gefrane nor the dam of my mare have shown any signs of HYPP – I just want to be on the safe side, you`ll never know… Vaccinations on my two horses are due, so the vet has to come out anyway (here in Germany a horse owner isn`t allowed to do this by himself) – I`ll ask her for the conditions of HYPP testing.

You can contact the AHA directly and if you give them the name of the horse, they will look it up and give you the current owner information. I have done this a couple times in the past. They were always very helpful!

    Nickeys & Hopsey –
I’ve been away from the computer all day…..Nickeys – thanks for the tips. I did actually speak to the JC on the phone twice while they were working on my ID and I did try using a black light, though the black light wasn’t very bright so it didn’t work that well. Classy is my first horse and I’m just curious about her history, but in the end, it doesn’t change anything – she has a forever home with me! I’m so glad you rescued your boy and were able to find out about him – that’s so neat! Hopsey – thanks for trying to play around with it! I’ve probably ran over 100 tattoos trying to find one that was local to match – those last two numbers are so faded. I think I’ll send in the S25979 with her photo and see if it’s a match – nothing to lose! If anyone else has an idea of what those last two numbers are – feel free to post! Thanks :)

Saddlebred question… asbrider, odinnsmeyjar, or mand_asbfan, can you help?

Out of sheer sentiment, I’d like to know about Prim Style, 1968 stallion. I know his pedigree, but I’d like to know his progeny and where they are, about his show record, his owners. And if he is by some miracle still alive, I’d like to know where he is.

And, if anyone should be with the Arapahoe Hunt (Denver area), I’d like to know if the big buckskin, Brigadoon, is still there. If he isn’t, where’d he go? We raised him from a weanling.

Thanks, big time. I’ve been missing Lou (Prim Style) big time for the past 36 years… I was his groom that year. And I fret about Doon.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a horse called Kibbler’s Black Hawke.
I own a paint that is the paternal grandson of this horse. I’ve found numerous people advertising that their horses are offspring of Kibbler’s Black Hawke, but I haven’t found anything on him like show records or accomplishments.

Could anyone help me with this?

Finally got around to registering tho I’ve been reading for months — great blog! I’ve been reading all the requests on this post to see if anyone was looking for info on any horses I know, but haven’t seen any.
I don’t think AHA automatically lists a horse as dead at 25, at least not now. I’m still logging recreational hours on my gelding and he’s 26; they haven’t tried to convince me he’s died yet.
Speaking of Arabs, can anyone look up 2? AK Sachi-Khan or Vanitys Debut. Sachi was born in ’80 and Debut in ’83. Curious if they’re still around. I sold them as youngsters and know both did well for a bit but have lost touch. Thanks.

I’m looking for a breeding stock APHA mare. The only information I have is her dams name which is Pistolslittlechic, and her foaling year which was 2003. She is a black solid and her registered name has Stardust in it, that’s all I know. I just want to know if she is out there, where she might be now, and doing OK. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

1/2 arab Northern Sundance born 4-14-70, presumed deceased (meaning no one turned in a death date after 30 yrs); no breeder or owners listed; sire Sig; dam Kandy, a grade mare. Lack of info on the older 1/2 arabs is common because AHA doesn’t have the old IAHA info in the computer/DataSource.

LHR MS Skyward born 8-30-80, not listed as deceased, last recorded owner Kimberly H Littrell on 10-10-98, Loganville GA.

Paradoks was bred by Khrenooe Horse Stud; sold to A I Iarov 10-4-96; sold to Cassandra L Ingles 1-24-2000.

Bey Luvly: There is no horse listed under this spelling. I did a partial search on Bey Luv & the only horse that came up was Bey Luvali born 5-4-98. There were no horses under the spelling of Bay Luvly. I also tried the spelling Luvely.

If anyone has arab pedigree lookups, feel free to email me privately at dmchapek at hotmail dot com. I don’t have time to read through all the comments to find the arab questions.

I had to put spaces in between the words but the description seems to match your gelding. While researching his dam, I actually came across your horse’s pedigree already online:

    http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/index.php?query_type=horse&h=SHEZA+USA+MAID&g=5&cellpadding=0&small_font=1&l=

Sired by Maid’s Dream who died in 2006 (colic if I remember correctly). Maid’s Dream was a Reserve World Champion and sired many World Champions. He was the going thing for Appaloosa halter sires until he died. He was owned by Dal Porto Ranch and is still up on their site, which includes an extended pedigree.

    http://www.dalportoranch.com/maids_dream.htm

Your gelding’s dam is Sheza Rockin Affair by Rock on Zip.

You have a VERY well bred horse! I can’t believe the gal didn’t give you his papers!

    JW Sunglows Flash
    ApHC# 363755
    Foaled 4/14/82
Blue roan, white with spots over entire body (ApHC speak for black leopard)

His sire, Sunglows Sundance, is online at http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/sunglows+sundance

Sunglows Sundance looks to be a linebred Money Creek horse (father-daughter mating) crossed on a good foundation horse going to Toby I and Buttons B.

His dam’s name is Thunderbird Girl but the rest of her pedigree is “unknown” on the ApHC site. That does not mean it really is unknown as I’ve noticed with many older pedigrees, they are unfinished on the site. I have looked up horses that my family has owned that we have papers for and know the extended pedigrees on and the ApHC has all or part listed as unknown on the site.

The ApHC now gives members the ability to look up more detailed info like points and owners but the list of options includes a $ amount and you must have paid ahead to get that info, which I haven’t. The only thing I get for “free” with my membership is pedigrees and basic info like name, #, foal date and color.

    I hope this helps :)

This is a long shot but does anyone know of any offspring from my old Appaloosa mare, Docs Frosti Miss. I imagine most would be located in the northwest but who really knows?! I just put her down last week at the age of 26. I only owned her for a few years but fell in love with her immediately. She was the sweetest old lady!

Docs Frosti Miss was a solid chestnut and sired by the AQHA, Docs Jack Frost (by Doc Bar), which made her a 1/2 sister to the barrel horse sire, Sun Frost. I don’t think many Appaloosas were bred to Docs Jack Frost. I know that my “Frosti” had a leopard full brother a year younger who was exported to ? as a stallion.

Frosti’s dam was an Appaloosa named Pondie Rosa. Pondie Rosa was a 1970 daughter of Candys Pondie. Pondie Rosa was a 2x Canadian National Champion and went on to make quite a name for herself in reining and cutting in the northwest.

I would love to find a daughter or granddaughter of Frosti that I could purchase. Any info about any of her offspring would be great, even if not for sale! I know she was bred to a couple Prince Plaudit sons/grandsons if that helps. Also info about who trained her would be nice. She was a good kids horse and acted like she was really well broke at one time. I heard that she was quite the cow horse in her day.

Like I said, this is a long shot but I would love it if this turned up something for me! I miss my old lady!

    Anyone know a Penni Andrews?

This blog inspired me to try to track down my horse’s registration papers (we bought him from someone who said she had his papers and she didn’t – I knew when we left the premises with a promise they’d be mailed that we would never see them from her). I contacted PtHA and they said he is registered (they had a picture, the names and sires matched, DOB and state of birth). She gave me the name of the owner BEFORE the person we bought him from. This person was Penni Andrews who may be from Rathdrum Idaho or perhaps Spirit Lake ID, Blanchard ID, or Spokane WA – or somewhere else in the vicinity. Anyone know? The horse is question is a TWH paint cross. I’ve never had “papers” issues before – my other two horses are Arabians that I’ve had forever….

Who would have ever thought the horse I bought out of the back of a dairy farm, crusted in manure, ridden down the road in a hackamore and a pony saddle would become a medallion producer, a National and World top 3 producer a multiple ROM producer and the list goes on. She has grandbabies!!! and they are gorgeous! and Talented!

I’m really interested in full siblings but any half siblings on either side would be wonderful also.
The reason for the request is because my mare is 28 years old and I love her build so i’m wondering if any others of her bloodlines are similar so I can keep an eye out for them.

    Thanks!

I can’t help you on finding siblings, but will be watching for a reply. I bought Mr. Bob Bonanza as a weanling from Bill Moomey in 1967. He was bred to a number of mares in Michigan before going to Oklahoma in the mid ’70′s. I doubt that any of his Michigan offspring are still alive. “Robert” had a wonderful deposition and was an all around good horse.

wenindoubt, I’m so thrilled that you and Patty are ‘reunited’! I know what it’s like to not know where your horse ended up, so happy reunions are something special. I had no idea that Patty had people looking for her lol. She is a great horse.

    Thanks, ASBrider!

Did we ever meet? This was when the horses were at Sunwood Farms, with a trainer. Prim Style won the Fall Classic at Eugene, that year. After I quit, the Blacklaws and that trainer parted company; I never found out why. He was a decent trainer, but occasionally drank a bit too much.

Did you ever see the print of Lou by Richard McClean?

    Thanks again,

Thank you, Fugs, for helping so many people learn the history of their horses or reconnect with ones they lost track of. This is fun! I only have 1 ApHC search left for this month after this flurry of looking up horses!

I am amazed at how many people don’t transfer the papers when they buy a horse. My question is: What can we, as sellers, do about it?

I have sold a handful of registered Appaloosas over the years and a couple are still in my name. They have been resold or the owners moved and I don’t have the current owner’s contact info. I know that especially geldings who aren’t shown on the ApHC circuit really don’t have a much use for papers but when genetic questions come up, it would be nice if all horses came with papers. I was talking with the registration department just last week because a mare I sold last year was bred via shipped semen and the proper paperwork wasn’t filed by the mare owner. According to the ApHC, that’s me! I will assume that she didn’t have a foal this year or they would have transferred her and registered the foal. But who really knows? It’s not that the mare was a junker, either. The lady paid $2500 (which isn’t bad for a solid colored barely 2yr old Appaloosa in this market), paid to ship her across the United States, and apparently bred her to a world champion reining stallion. (Side note here: She told me she was buying her as a reining prospect and I wouldn’t have sold my filly to her if I’d known she would be be BRED as a 2yr old! If she wasn’t so far away, I’d be tempted to go take the mare and make the lady tear up the transfer!) I asked the lady with the registration department if they deal with this issue often and she said it’s a big problem. So, before I wander too far off my topic, this is not just a problem of backyard, poorly bred horses. An Appaloosa I researched for a blog reader, butlersmom, turned out to be a son of Maid’s Dream! A son of a leading sire that didn’t have his papers with him! In fact, all of the horses I looked up for blog readers turned out to be decently to well bred Appaloosas!

So, what are our options? With the ApHC, I believe the buyer has to be a member. A one-year membership is $55 and a transfer is $15. $70 to have your new Appaloosa in your name (unless you’re already a member, in which case it’d cost you just $15) and all you have to do is send in the original papers and a signed transfer (from the last person on the papers). Should the seller offer to purchase the membership for a non-member and send in the papers, membership application, and transfer themselves? That would work to get the horse out of your name but what are the cons to that?

It would work much easier if everyone would just transfer their horses into their names. A horse with current papers is easier to sell (because you own him and the new owner doesn’t have to worry about doing a bunch of footwork to become the “owner”) and generally worth more with papers.

I know one reason many people didn’t hand over the registration papers years ago was because of horse dealers or other people who would put the wrong papers on a horse. I don’t think that’s so much of a problem anymore because of DNA testing in the ApHC.

The answer to my question of how to get people to transfer papers may lie in asking the buyers why they don’t transfer papers or send the papers with the horse when they sell it. The cost of transferring? Laziness? Hiding genetic defects like HYPP? Hiding breed (ie. selling a noncharacteristic Appaloosa as a grade Quarter Horse)? Not actually owning the horse (ie. didn’t finish making the payments or are only leasing)? Or what? The ApHC has no time limit on transferring. So, for example, the lady who bought my filly and bred her without transferring the papers can transfer her at her leisure (ApHC goes by the date on the transfer, not when it is sent in). Theoretically, if she didn’t breed her via shipped semen and have that paperwork to do, she wouldn’t need to transfer her until she wanted to register the foal. Should the breed association put a 30 day limit on transfers and then charge more?

Anyone have ideas on this matter? We can all see how big of a problem it is by this blog!

Celestial Moon Rocket is registered with the AQHA. I would like to find more about her breeding. We know she has some TB lines in her. If I could find out if she’s had any babies that’d be pretty cool. She was either started very young, or worked hard her entire life because at 13 she’s having issues with arthritis.
