You know how I normally say that it’s best to politely try to offer advice to people? That we can make our point the best if we keep it calm, cool and profanity-free?
Well, I’m just not in that kind of mood tonight. It’s all I can do not to call this moron and give him a piece of my mind (which would benefit him greatly, as he clearly is a cerebrally-challenged member of our society) My friend is sitting next to me and she just said “if I could beat that person over the head with a 2 x 4, I would.” Amen, sister. I will help. There is no place in Hell bad enough for this asshat. I don’t know why we don’t have laws on the books that forbid riding a horse under 24 months of age. We should.Â
I’m just in no mood for this. James and Skyler Bowden, you guys are the scum of the earth. I see you also have dirt bikes – could you just stick to those and leave the poor, helpless filly alone???
It’s in Texas if you want to upgrade it, though the thought of giving him the whopping $250 he wants instead of a cruelty citation makes me nauseous.Â

Before thinking price is too much or something like that, remember the last time you had a shoulder dislocated trying to handle one of those $100 fillies, My 12 yr old can load this filly, and ride her up the highway. 1st find another young horse that can do what this filly can, then consider the time it takes to train one, $250 is dirt cheap for a filly this smart.”

While he doesn’t say that everyone must always wear a helmet, it’s mandatory for those under 18 participating in his programs (although who’s going to enforce it?), and he’s recommending everyone else to at least consider wearing one.
Oh My GOD!!! Somebody upgrade that filly before that mentally deficient hillbilly ruins her. There is so much wrong in that ad I am absolutely staggered.

OK Been following this blog throughout all it’s ups and downs over nearly 3 years now. I just have to say how f**ked up this is. The seller being on his ‘high horse’ – so to speak about how he will not take less than $500.00 for this filly. He obviously knows KB prices as he referred to them in his ad. Unlike others who may read this I just wish for a kind home for this, somewhat fugly, albeit, likely stunted lil gal, and I would suspect that the fella selling her likely has so many problems, or will have, due to ignorance, that a 2X4 upside the head will be the least of what he has to deal with. I am at a loss here. So much ignorance, and you can bet there are people who are affected by this poor man. Aargh….
I love the lawnmower, gas can (full?) and assorted other crap this filly is grazing (in what appears to be a nylon halter) next to. No wonder she doesn’t spook at anything, she lives in a junkyard. If that filly was half as smart as he claims, she would upgrade herself. Poor baby.
(Also, picture 2 looks like someone is shaving their weight to hit 90 pounds, but it could be just because the filly is so tiny in comparison.)

The deal fell through on my filly , and I had already started on this colt, he is bay with white socks on 3 feet, and a blaze down his face, he is coming on 8months. He will load with out much trouble, and is easy to catch, doesnt know much , but has lots of potential . Shit like this is why I never hear anything good about Texas.
Well other than riding and walking on a highway, my youngest colt could do the same thing by the time he was weaned. Now as a 2 year old, I can’t keep him OUT of the trailer. If he sees the trailer he is trying to get on it. Once he even tried to load via the side door that was open. I remember when I was helping my friend teach her colt to trailer, we had to tie him in the trailer to keep him out of the way. We backed the trailer up to the gate because her horse was herd bound and we couldn’t get him to the trailer.
Having a filly that does all that is not something special. Obviously he has put a lot of time in her to get those results but that’s all it takes. Time and patience (and teaching the right thing in a clear language that the horse can understand.) However, having a filly that isn’t flipping shit having a rider on its back while riding down the highway at 7 months old IS special. Jesus let the horse have time to mature. She’s a saint for not pitching a fit especially if she has large trucks and cars flying by her at 65+ mph.
My question is why don’t they just put up the extra fencing? They are probably losing money on her selling her at that price and they probably aren’t even going to check references, or living arrangements for the filly.
I am in no means saying I want these people to have horses. Obviously they FAIL at ownership/training and horse care. Sad, I seriously hope someone upgrades her.

Anyone else think there is no way that kid (person?) riding her in the picture is under 90 pounds? I weight 115-120, and there is NO WAY that kid is that much smaller than me, unless Charlotte is a mini!

Why do I feel the need for a hillbilly spay & neuter? (I’m talking about the humans, not necessarily the equines, though no doubt the colt needs to lose a couple pieces of his anatomy.)
Good for them that they handled that filly to death. Riding, not so good. My first-born equine (the first one I was responsible for, from conception to the grave) knew how to load when he was a 4-month old, picked up his feet, bathed, clipped with no twitch, stood square and still, etc. It’s not hard, their minds are eager little sponges. munchkin, I had a couple of youngsters who enjoyed trailer time, hook the trailer up to the truck and leave it in the pasture with grain in it, in they went, hoping for a ride. But riding a baby? No, can’t justify that in any way, shape,or form. I wish I could upgrade both horses, though that would then leave an empty space in their pasture to be filled by two new unsuspecting equines.

My friend Collin weighs about 430lbs. He loves horses and used to ride, but can’t anymore at his weight. If you want I’ll join you and we can go tie some rope around their faces and let Collin ride those asshats up and down the fucking highway.

Not proud to point this out since I live in Arkansas, but the phone number is an Arkansas number and it’s listed on the Little Rock, Arkansas Craigslist. So, Texas can’t get the blame for this one.
Just have to try to defend my state. This guy looks to be in Arkansas, not Texas. The ad is listed under Little Rock, the little town (Atkins) he refers to is in Arkansas, and his phone # is Arkansas area code.

Y’know, except for the RIDING part (which I am not willing to ask of a long yearling — she’s about 17 months now), I have one that does all that stuff… leads at walk/trot/canter on a draped lead, auto-halts when I halt, picks up all four feet, “leads” by the tail, loads in horse trailers, traffic safe, dog/bike/kid/chicken/cow friendly. Has been sacked out extensively, has no body issues at all, has manners I would class as “good” but not “finished” or “adult horse” yet. I probably *could* walk under her but I’ve never tried. Loads on and off trailer with drape in the lead rope, stands well for the farrier, takes wormer like a champ. She also longes left and right with walk, trot, reverse, and halt (voice commands) and can do rope work a la Parelli. I was planning on teaching her to ground drive in the spring, when she’ll be coming two. This is my first baby project and I was kind of feeling OK about our progress.
Now I feel like a failure… clearly, I should have hopped aboard five months ago! Well, dayum, let me get right on that! (In three springs, when she’s had some time to grow up a bit. She’s an arab from a slow-maturing family — backing at four is plenty fast.)

This little filly is indeed a wonderful little horse to put up with so much. She lives in an environment unfit for horses, she gets handled by people who should not have horses, yet she still does her best. Bless her.
All the young horses I bought were very eager to learn. Teaching them how to load/unload/stand for the vet/tie/pick up their feet, etc.. these were all things that were exceptionally easy for them to learn. All it took was someone who wanted to teach them. Personally? I don’t think that an 8 month old horse is truly “the smartest” for having the knowledge to do things that a 2 month old horse could do.

The ignorance just shows in the way they brag about riding her. Yeah, having a baby that you can handle is a very good thing, but you can overdo it! All 6 of the babies I have raised could do all that, but none ridden until at least 3. She looks like a cute girl, hope someone with a brain gets her.
Unfortunately someone at the barn I board at has ridden a filly under 1 year old. I wasn’t there when it happened, the guy who is leasing my horse told me about it. Needless to say, I was PO’d. These morons have also ridden their 16 month old gelding. I was there while they were riding the 16 month old. At first I saw they had him saddled. I was like “what the fuck, why do they even have a saddle on the little guy?” Then I saw they were lunging him.. again, another WTF moment. THEN, I look over in the arena and the fat cow was riding the poor boy! The lady who was leading him on the ground was like “Look how good he’s doing for his second ride. And he’s only 16 months old!” A couple of days later I told the barn owner that I was shocked to see them riding Wranger (the 16 month old) and she said they’re “aware” that they could be ruining him. That just baffled me. I really wish it was illegal, like you said, to ride a horse under 24 months old.
Well, okay then. I am more than willing to take him up on his challenge. ALL my weanlings and yearlings do everything his filly does and much much more. Plus they are double registered, very well bred, well cared for, and most have a show record already, but they don’t start under saddle until they at least 3-4 years old. And, they aren’t for sale for a couple hundred dollars nor am I willing to trade for chickens.

I’m not surprised that she “rides” down the highway. She’s got a whole lot of weight on her back (that kid is NOT 90 pounds), and probably physically CAN’T do much more than walk along. Poor girl.
I posted before I looked at the photos on his orginial ad. I STILL am willing to take on his challenge of having the smartest filly in the country. I see by his photos that in order to get his filly to kneel, he has to hold her leg up. I have news for him, ALL weanlings will kneel if you hold their front leg up long enough. The hard part is training them to do it themselves when you just ask them – which mine do. They also can do more tricks, but I don’t ask the babies to do too much. Most of their trick training is better suited for when they are a little older. It’s not unusal for a yearling to be able to perform 10 tricks or so, on their own, when cued. I currently have one that is now 4, but when he was a yearling, he could bow, lie down, sit, Spanish Walk, cross his legs, stand on a box, stretch, stand on a box, salute, rumba, dance, and much more. He was giving public trick demos and earned a reserve world championship in halter as a 2 year old. Top that, fella. LOL. But of course, I didn’t start riding him until he was 3 1/2, so maybe you are the better horseman since your horse was broke to ride as a weanling.
24 months? That’s still ridiculously early. 36 months sounds like a good absolute minimum to me.

To clarify, as soon as there is some kind of legal minimum age, half the country would interpret that as “start then” not “start FROM then”. So I think it’d be better to err on the side of caution and make it 3 years. And even that I still think is pretty early, I’ve never started before the 4th spring, which is considered about normal here – and we’ve got healthy, active 20+ horses all over the place.

I’m willing to make a bet that “kid” up there, isn’t 90 pounds. I’d also like to know what inspired him to pull her tail and see what happens… I mean, REALLY? And finally… I’m not sure the fact that she doesn’t “buck and bounce around 1/2 as much” as your 7 y/o gelding when vaccinated means much of anything… at all. Here’s a shocker- I’ve got a BLM filly that’s never offered a “buck or bounce” over a shot & I’m fairly certain there’s at least one or two other 7 month olds who can keep their bouncing under control. Its not uncommon to see people doing dumb shit to try to make their horses look more valuable so they can ask a bigger price and get more money! You will even see people saying a horse is a “Friesian cross or Gypsy cross” because they ass-u-me they can even get more money for them. Which leads me to the current ad…..These people are doing dumb shit so they can….. wait for it …..wait for it…… get $250 for this filly!
Allow me to give some advice to these jerkwads……. working with a weanling is great! Teaching them manners and exposing them to things like having their feet handled and a trailer is great. This alone is worth $250 in my opinion. What is not great is riding this filly and taking her down the highway. What are you trying to prove here? Let me guess, you are trying to prove that you have a “smart” filly. Instead you have successfully shown that it is YOU who is not the smart one of the family! OH they edited their add. They got rid of the riding photo and the line about riding her. Now it says she can walk over logs or something. At first I didn’t understand at all why you were commenting about 2x4s because it didn’t mention riding. Then I read the actul ad! LOL

I don’t personally advocate riding 2 year olds, but riding yearlings or less should be flat out illegal, and there are plenty of people doing it. Few as extreme as this case, but I don’t think it’s a whole lot more right to be breaking them at 16 months for the track or for the 2 year old futurities. There really needs to be a lower LIMIT that is the same across the states, for people who are too dumb to figure it out on their own. I mean, it’s like car seats. We have laws because some parents are too dumb to figure it out on their own and would drive merrily around with the baby rolling all over the seat loose if they could.
DarthArwen: My four year old, who was lightly started at three and was never asked to collect or work on the bit until this spring/summer, went to the chiropractor, who is also a dressage rider, last week. He had gotten cast in his stall and put himself out of alignment. She couldn’t get over his lack of scar tissue and how flexible he was – she said most QH’s his age are already a wreck. How sad is that? I mean, nice for him but … goes to show what kind of shape most are in from this stupid starting-them-early nonsense.

I wonder why all those buyers backed out? Could it be that they don’t want a filly that is already broken down before the age of 2? I’m in Texas (Houston area), and I’d be willing to try to find her a better home. Anyone in the Atkins area able to do a drive-by and see if she is on the property? I have no money, but this just gets to me. Early on in my horse ownership days, I lost a mare (flaxen chestnut) at the age of 4 due to a wire fence injury. I can’t stand the thought that this one is in even worse conditions.

Unless YOU posted the child's phone number as part of your ad, in which case it would be YOUR fault, nobody has said a word about your child. While I admit it was dumb of me to let my son climb on the young filly, The add was a goof, i copy pasted from another add. Charlotte has not EVER been ridden. My son did climb up on her and I took a pic. That was dumb. as far as my yard and my pasture situation, I have 20 acres, but coyotes are a problem, I keep the smaller horses close to the house, that is why I mentioned trading my colt for a grown horse. Coyotes dont mess with grown horses. Seems like most folks on here are very pissed about a young horse carring weight. I agree with you on that, But Why are you not concerned about the HATEMAIL that is being sent to my child? He was just goofing around and climbed up on a horse, there is no need to send viscouse E-mail calling him names. The folks that publish this blog are CYBER BULLIES. It is may be that when you do not understand that what you are doing with your young horses (riding, questionable breeding practices, poor care, etc) is wrong and do not realize that poor spelling and grammar also make you the object of ridicule, that there are some hard feelings. Outright anger apparently. It does not appear that these people are malicious in their care of their horses, just ignorant.
Unfortunately ignorance can kill. It can cripple. It can injure children.
No one thinks that is funny in any way, do they? I doubt that the person that placed the Craigslist ad would either. I doubt the folks posting on this blog do.
The thought that maybe finding out about the proper way to care for a young horse, checking spelling, making sure their children are safe in their equestrian endeavors all require 100% thoroughness of thought and research before acting. Many people, myself included have went off on a new project with less than 100% of the required knowledge. Sometimes there are problems because of it.
Bottom line is this, isn’t it:
That no matter how much we know or think we know, there are always times when we are wrong, our knowledge is outdated, there are other good or better ways. We need to be always open to help, constructive criticism, learning more about what we are doing. And not upset when some one comes down on us. Maybe the outright ridicule does make for some hostility, that is true, but by always having a teachable attitude, we all can continue to grow and get better at what we love. So we can serve them better.

It is against the law to post a picture of a child not your own—if it hasn’t already been posted elsewhere on the Internet.
I learned that in Journalism 101. A advertiser is not allowed to use the image of a child or children without explicit parental permission. That means a signed waiver. I’ve obtained plenty in my time. But certainly the family is within their rights to use that image of the kid on that baby horse to help sell that baby horse. There’s a caveat though …
Posting your own kid’s photo on the Internet, the way our laws are today, makes that child’s image fair game.
Last time I looked, Google was not illegal either, nor was Facebook.

Unfortunately, this man (DO) has never had any formal training from a qualified horse trainer or by just reading books regarding horse ownership. My blog caters to first time horse owners in assisting them to acquire knowledge regarding responsible horse ownership. This kind of ignorance toward horses is what I am trying to stop before it happens.

Okay, so harming the horse is okay but you regret posting the ad?
Every horse owner that has young horses should know that a horse is never to be ridden until they are at least 24 months of age (2 years old). It is highly irresponsible to ride a horse (no matter what your weight) before that age. a lot of horse owners now are even waiting until 3 years of age to ride their horses. There is sooo much more you can teach a horse during that first two years.
Saying that someone has ridden this little filly at 7 months is just advocating that anyone who wants to buy her can also ride her. That is just cruel and irresponsible.
To DO: You should be teaching your children better horse safety! No one should jeapardize their childs safety by putting them on a young untrained horse and you should be teaching them NOT to just jump on your young horses. If any of your young horses happen to spook or just plain rodeo buck your kids off, they could end up lying in a
hospital bed as a vegetable. You’re supposed to be the adult, act like one.

OMG. this is nuts!.poor little filly. young horses should never have weight on them until the growth plates are all fused or alot of damage can be done. i dont ride mine until three after a vet check. i have raised three horses and i would never allow my kids to crawl under them or be crash test dummies for the first ride! things can go wrong real quick! our sweet mellow qh was a bucker for no apperent reason we had a second vet check done them a chiro it was his back was off just a teeny bit. i would never put my kid in that spot. my horses must be pretty smart too at 4mo my qh could load tie and lead down the road.at a year he was wearing a bareback pad and that summer was being ponyed through the fields with my trusty arab. at two years he was wearing full tack and going down the road next to my arab at three he was ridden and has done alot of light trail rides. even our draft at at 8mo ( he was 7mo when we got him)you could point at the trailer and he would hop in. we never even attempted to drive him until he was 4 and that was doing very light work
