And then this one screamed my name…

I’m so glad I went down to the lot myself!  Hana, who has been SO helpful in photographing and helping to identify horses, met me and told me she had another with a tattoo.  I nearly fell over when I saw her.  This is a bad camera phone pic but the mare is just gorgeous in real life!

We ran her tattoo and she is Exclusive Report, by Private Appeal out of a daughter of Silent Screen. She’s produced numerous winners.  She appears extremely sound, healthy, and even had her feet done not long ago.  I’m trying to trace the history – she sold at the winter WTBA last year for only $300.  No one filed a breeding report so we have no idea what she is carrying.  I’m hoping we can find out.  Maybe it’s not a Thoroughbred, who knows.  She was run through without her papers.

It’s payday for most of us – if you can skip a frappucino and send $5 or whatever you can spare to info@secondchanceranch.org, it would be much appreciated. She needs to get out of there.

And I really will write another blog post about something completely unrelated today.  :-)   Thanks for bearing with me and thanks to those who have helped get some of these horses to safety.  In other related news, all the Arabs are very sweet as is 461 and they are all going home with new owners.  I posted pics of Staci and Eeyore safe at KL’s to the Enumclaw Report thread. And the Fugaloosa colt was rescued by one of the office staff at the auction. He is going to have some new experiences now…like HOOF CARE.  She was as appalled as I was by his condition.  Who knows, maybe with some proper care he will turn out a lot better than we think – at any rate, she has a home for him once he’s fattened up and broke out next spring so that’s very good news for him!

My first pony was a (solid bay) PoA/Ap cross whose dam was one of the fugliest fugaloosas who ever fugged (neighbor had picked her up-he breeds driving mules, but tends to get a lot of cheapish horses headed nowhere good just because he likes having them around and hates to see them end up dog food, even if he can’t use them for the mules.) Even fugaloosas deserve a home (and a hoof trim.)

I’m assuming Exclusive Report is way past the point where you could have the foal taken care of in advance instead of letting her carry to term? Hopefully it’s something nice. She looks like a sweet mare and I’m always happy when a horse gets their name back, too.

I never get tired of hearing of efforts made to rescue horses and to hear the success stories of those that do make it to safe, loving homes.

Everytime I read about these auctions and rescues, I get so upset that my situation has changed to where I no longer have the ability to have horses. But, I can guarantee you that when I do, I will be taking in a rescue or auction horse.

Thank you for the updates. I pray this mare is saved.

Yeah, my guess is she’s due early in 2010. She’s fairly big already. So that makes me think she was bred for a racing foal, to a TB, because QH and other breeders usually shoot for March-April-May and better weather for their foals.

I hope we can solve the mystery and get baby’s papers.

OMG!! She IS freaking gorgeous even in a crummy picture. If I could convince hubby we needed another, I would want her in a heartbeat. I can just tell she has a sweet sweet face, totally kissable nose. If anyone in Eastern Washington just needed to “camp” her for a few days to make arrangments, we could accomodate her temporarily to keep her from shipping!

p.s. I hate people. Just thought I would throw that in there. How can we call ourselves human and just throw animals away?! Argh.

Of course now Ron wants $500.

I understand those who do not want to put that much profit in Ron’s pocket. But I still want to see her out of there, and ultimately the villain isn’t Ron, it’s the person who dumped her at the auction without her papers.

I realize I’m not being logical on this one. I just like her too much.

If only they had sent her papers, Oly would have found her another broodmare home. That’s what makes me CRAZY. Oly HAS buyers who want broodmares. But the previous owner sentenced her to death by retaining the papers.

These are the horses that so often fall through the cracks. She’s lovely and as you said, someone let her go but — sent her to a not-very-good place. However, in situations where there is panic or resignation (depression?) on the part of the owner, it’s wrong to point fingers. We do what we can/must and sometimes what is easiest or most expedient.

And I don’t think it’s going to get easier any time soon. Ack.

Stop teasing! Oh, I do not need another horse, I do NOT need another horse! She is drop dead gorgeous though. I hope someone goes and gets her. She is a lovely mare that needs a forever home.

It’s strange to me how more and more of these great horses are ‘falling through the cracks’. Great horses, great lines, nothing visibly wrong with them, champions or producers of champions…and they just suddenly slip through some hands and into a feedlot. And this one is pregnant! Someone obviously cared, and you just have to wonder why they would dump her in a lot rather than try to find help through selling her respectively, or trying to put her through a rescue. I guess a feedlot seems quicker, and more profitable, but have we really sunk this low? The Horse market is the pits lately, but surely someone still wants these horses! Why aren’t all the backyard fuglies dropped off? Oh, wait…because their kyooot golden color would be ruined by all that dirt on the way to slaughter! /Scarcasm.
Seriously, though. More of these great horses seem to be dropped off, and while many average or low-end horses are being dropped off like the Fugaloosa, it seems like the better ones are loosing luck lately. This latest auction seemed to have a LOT of great prospects and proven horses. The only real fugly I saw posted was the Walkawateveritwasploosa.

Even a year ago, much of what was in the kill pen was in there for a reason. A bad reason, to be sure, but you know…unbroke or unsound or crappy condition. Fixable stuff, but you saw how that had happened to the horse.

Now? It’s insane. Broke, fat, well cared for, well bred registered horses are going to kill.

I sent $10 via the paypal link on SCR’s site. I’m on the east coast or I’d be tempted to go get her myself, she is a nice mare. However, I just had two shetland ponies that I had sold two years ago bounce back to me, so I have all I can feed right now! I’m so glad I kept in touch with the person I sold them too – they are fantastic ponies, and she went thru a bad divorce, etc…you know the drill. But now they’re safe back with me and they will never be sold again! The rest of the herd is on CL for $250 each – these are QUALITY, ASPC registered ponies, some are broke to ride, all are sound, healthy, and up-to-date. 3 weanlings, several broodmares, one stallion. If anyone in the New England area wants a NICE shetland pony, email me for contact details!

I just thought of a question… Is there a way to get papers for rescues like this? I have two Standardbreds that have been “thrown away” They are tattooed and I know their registered names, I’ve read their tattoos and researched. If the papers have been thrown away, is there some way to get them back??? I would like to have the papers for my mares, I don’t want to breed them, I would just like to have papers on hand. One that I rescued was in foal, way too advanced to abort, there was only one month left in her gestation… Unfortunately, since the mare was so thin and neglected, the foal did not survive past his 9th day. He was a jet black pure bred Standardbred colt. Very sad… even more sad is when you think that they were sending the mare to slaughter AND she was in foal! Makes me so mad! She’s safe now and will never have to worry about anything again.

Exclusive Report was sold at the 2008 WTBA winter sale for $300 to Chris Chrisman of Monroe. Consigned by El Dorado (as agent) although they would not likely have any idea who the mare was bred to in 2009 after she passed through their hands.

In my dream world, WTBA would forever ban any further buying from anyone known to have sent a horse purchased through their sales to slaughter.

Of course, the person who bought her in 2008 may not have been the current owner, but that appears to be most recent identifiable unless the Jockey Club has more up to date info. That person might be of some help in identifying what became of her post the 2008 Winter Sale if they were not the one who dumped her at Enumclaw.

Will send some funds SCR’s way to help wherever they deem best!

Thanks to ALL for their hard work and for saving so many. Would love to see a photo album of each horse, with their name, tag # and where they are now.

I haven’t found anybody who knows this person or any evidence they’re involved in racing. It does not appear that this mare was dumped by someone actively involved in breeding racehorses in Washington.

But you know it’s just like the claiming races. When your broodmares start getting under $1K in value, you know they’re in trouble. All you’d have to do is put a month of training on them and they would be in a better position to find a home. What’s a month of training and board cost, about half the cost of a month on the track, or less?

C’mon folks. Pry open the wallets. Do the right thing. Heck half of you have grooms at your home farms that ride well enough to give these old girls a refresher.

Could be … Private Report may have been sold because she had been bred, but they thought she hadn’t settled (even the ultrasound can miss one, never mind plain ol’ palpation). Of course, in that case, you may be able to find our who the sire is, but might have to pay a hefty stud fee to get the baby registered. :)

This is even more likely if it appears she hasn’t foaled in the last couple of years. I think most breeders will give a mare that produces winners one barren year — but then they start to get hinky about her “not earning her keep” (don’t get me started). So if they covered her, but it looked like she’d be empty for a second or third year …

The Jockey Club needs to step up and do something for hardship papers — it’s a responsible thing to do for horses that end up in this situation. They have a tattoo to work with, and could compare the physical description to the papers if it came to that. This mare has a history that shouldn’t just be discounted because her physical papers aren’t with her. When does retaining papers EVER have a positive affect on the animal’s welfare?

I know people are against NAIS or whatever that is for chipping animals, but wouldn’t it be nice if horses always had permanent “papers” with them? Some kind of system that didn’t require actual pieces of paper that get lost, retained out of spite, and destroyed in fires or what have you. For a car, if you have the VIN number you can always get a reissued title.

I may not understand all of the ramifications of this situation, but I think in most cases, if a horse can be papered, they should be reissued in some fashion.

Wonder if the Halvorson’s wanted to breed Szizzle, or perhaps try her as a cutting/reining horse?

Someone should send this blog entry to Jane Smiley, so she can see exactly what happens to $1K broodmares in foal — I am referring to the Waterwheel incident. Yes, she squeaked by at the $1K level for her mare last year (or was it two years ago?), but probably in this economy it would have been much the same as this situation with this mare.

“Lovely mare! This may be a dumb question, but I’ve wondered about it before. If she’s been bred to a TB and the foal is born & lives, who pays the stud fee? The new owner, the old owner, anybody?????”

This is one of those “it depends” questions. The straight-up rule is that if the owner of the foal — iow, the new owner of the mare — then the stallion owner is entitled to require the stud fee before s/he signs the registration certificate. In this kind of situation, when no stallion report was filed, there would also be dna testing, etc.

HOWEVER — there *are* still good people in this world. I have known of several cases where the owner of a stallion with a substantial stud fee either signed the certificate at no charge or at a hugely reduced stud fee in a rescue situation. It really would be up to the stallion owner, however.

Of course, in the TB industry, “live foal guarantee” is not a common breeding contract clause, so the stud fee *may* have been paid. Then you’re into hoping the stallion owner will work with you on the testing — and isn’t a jerk. :)

In short, it’s a crapshoot. You may end up with a foal registerable as a Half-TB or as an American WB with an unknown sire, or as “said to be” sired by NameBrandStallion, or you may get the foal’s full birthright. All you can do is try. With a mare that looks like that one, it would be worth it!

This is a little off topic, but still has to do with responsibility. Yesterday I was driving to a friend’s house when I came across this beautiful orange and white kitten laying on the road. Someone hit her with a car, rendering both her back legs unusable and left her there in the middle of the road, unable to move, to get squished by the next approaching car. Do we not have some sort of responsibility to an animal that we inadvertently mow down with our automobiles? For those of you who are wondering, I did pick this little kitty up and she is resting comfortably right now at my veterinarian’s office waiting on a Feline leukemia test. This sort of thing just bakes my potato!

I’ve just seen so much irresponsibility lately with horses, dogs, cats, children…when will it end?

Wherever she goes, that pregnancy should probably be watched closely since the last two didn’t go well.

I updated her progeny best I could on pedigreequery.com from catalog pages and the free info from equineline.com.

Hopefully Katie now has enough to bail both her and Ruling Flame. She was still short almost $100 as of about 2:45pm today to cover the both of them.

  65. I just paypal’d $50. It’s about all I can afford right now. Gryph’s out of town again, btw, on a business trip. Funds are even tighter for him. :/

Good luck, and I really hope she can be saved!

    Hi,

Can someone PM me at ichabods_auctions@sbcglobal.net and tell me how to help? I can donate a small amount, but at this point I’m confused about which horse we are helping! I figure I have spent enough on my spoiled rotten beastie in the last couple of weeks that I can fork over a few dollars to help another horse.

And I know that this is SO VERY OT, and I hope it does not get lost (and that I don’t annoy anyone), but my new order just arrived and I cannot contain myself…

The greatest horse cookies in the world can be found at the following link:

    http://nickerbait.com/

I understand links are automatic now (hopefully)? Anyways, I bought some of these at the Horse Expo in Sac in June, and they are awesome! I have nothing to do with the company, I swear, although I may call and ask if they need/want a sales rep! They have horse truffles and cakes too! They are a little pricey, but I’m thinking they would make great gifts (for my farrier, vet, trainer, etc.)! Plus, I just like the ponies in their logo! I just ordered got another 4 lbs for the aforesaid spoiled rotten beastie!

Anyways, again, please PM me and tell me who I should send the money too, and let me know the posting name of the person I am helping.

    Thanks!

    Cathy, this one is for you :-) ;
I was cleaning out some old issues of ‘Chronicle of the Horse’ and found this cartoon (sorry I can’t scan this, it was good)
    A woman is sitting on her fugly horse. Her instructor/friend (?) on the ground says to the rider;
‘Call him ‘Doughnut’, because you were nuts to spend dough on him.’

I had just seen a picture of him, standing next to Staci, on the SAFE blog, I’m just dying because it’s too soon for me to have one, and I so miss having a horse in my life, even to the point that I hate sunny days because I don’t have one in my life right now.

You guys pulled together so unbelievably well and did much to get great homes for so many. I am so thankful to you and happy for the horses.

It seems that the Halvorson’s are practically my neighbors! Though I don’t know them, their address in the Arab breeder directory is to a VERY nice horse property and I’ve recently seen the occasional QH out grazing. …For what it’s worth…

Where is that thread with the ad from the poor speller saying well meaning people have ruined the horse business?

I want to respond to that. :)

Is it possible that either this comment or the ad was deleted? I remember reading it, but just did extensive searching and couldn’t find anything related, only some expired/deleted CL ads.

So I’ve never donated to a rescue foundation on line that’s not in my country – or ever actually, but something about this story, this mare, made me think I could afford to let go some of the money I made teaching a riding lesson tonight. I mean, I’ve got a rescue t-bred who has no track record, had one foal who never raced, she’s nothing special, but she’s my girl. I guess it’s the little things…
My compliments on their website though. Most impressed with the lay out, the utd pics and the ease of navigation.
I really do wish that Alberta had something similar.
Keep up the fantastic work fuglyblog!

    Goatlady,

Depending on where you live it may be against the law to leave an animal you have hit. That is the case here although in the absence of witnesses I am sure no one gives a crap. I hope the kitten can be saved, but this is often not a good scenario for life quality. We love you for nabbing her.

Here are Exclusive Report and Ruling Flame, finally safe. The mare is gorgeous, fat, and has been well cared for. She is the one in the back. The gelding will need a little more TLC but seems quiet and sound. He is filthy and will hopefully get a bath today.

Good grief, she’s beautimous :-) She looks like a mare at my barn that’s Bold Ruler bred. Very classy mare.

I don’t have the $$ to spare, but I’d like to offer to anyone who has bailed any of these horses, free help with their websites or blogs. I do HTML and can set up a small free website or do Facebook, MySpace, Photobucket, or whatever any of them would like to do to tell their stories or post before & after pictures. Shoot me an email at brighthorsedesign at gmail dot com if interested.

I noticed my pic didn’t show up. Here it is again. The mare loaded up like a dream. The gelding was a little more nervous but not bad. He probably thought we were going to take him without his new girlfriend. He is really attached to her already. Based on his lack of muscle tone I wonder if he was locked up in some small enclosure and didn’t have any other horses with him.

The appies were still there when I picked the TBs up at 4:00. Most were in with the seven that were scheduled to leave this morning. The big draft cross was in a different pen with maybe 3 other horses. I think those are Ron’s and they leave next week.

402 is a he and will either have a new home nearby soon, or (if I don’t have any takers in a week) will be shipped east if not. Got some lovely quotes from a few shippers with personal references, so he has a home one way or another. The incredibly generous aja is fostering him and a couple others while their ultimate destinations get things sorted out.

I thought I saw something on one of the other threads about one of the appies? And are both the TBs safe now?

As for hitting animals, I once SAW the car ahead of me hit a cat (it wasn’t really anyone’s fault–dark night, and the cat bolted across a busy street right under the front tires) and not stop. All I could do was basically move it off the road and sit with it ’til the end, which was very quick, but I still felt awful. I understand if it’s 70mph on the freeway and a bird bounces off your windscreen you’re not going to pull over, but on a two-lane city street with parking?

Offtopically, but I DID hit a bird with my windshield going 70 mph once, and I pulled over and went back for it. (It was dead, and looked like it died instantly, thankfully.)

Looks like the writing was on the wall for that poor mare, although she’s in foal this year … they must have decided it wasn’t worth taking another chance on a dead foal. It doesn’t surprise me at all that she was owned by someone rich and famous — although the irony of Dancing with Wolves doesn’t escape me. I am sure the owner had no idea what was going on with this horse, only that she wasn’t making any money and whoever was managing her advised him to get rid of her.

I hope we can continue to educate the racing world about responsible ownership AFTER the horse is worthless to them. It’s a shame that it gets so political, where organizations like CANTER get thrown off the back stretch, or can’t establish in the first place … the situation often ends up as a tightrope walk between not wanting to alienate the industry and wanting to help. It’s not all cake and ice cream out there. At least progress has been made, since a few years ago when the problem of throw-away horses was really under the rug.

And it’s not just the successful horses that get turned into trash, it’s those appies and others that never even have a chance, as Fugly has been pointing out for a couple of years now.

I am just glad that there’s people out in the world that can intervene in situations like these, so she didn’t end up dead. Thank you all for your efforts!!

How nice! She’s a great ride, they enjoyed her for 11 years, but when she got kicked in the hip, they dump her at the kill-buyer auction. Awesome.

    *sigh*

On a farrier call the other day I found out about a horse that is looking for a home. One of the new boarders at the farm bought a horse from alberta. She got her from a rescue (don’t know the name or I would have been sending the a peice of my mind). They told her that the old mare she got was broke and would be rideable for a beginner like herself. She was told that the mare was an old racehorse then used as a broodmare. Being very green she didn’t know any better. So I went and looked at her and she a bucket full of problems. She has no tatoo so I know that she wasnt raced and she looks like a cross to me. Maybe arab thoroughbred? Her feet have been badly neglected but she is recieving regular trims now. She’s got a bit of a cresty neck considering that shes about 100 pounds underweight and by looking at her feet it looks like she might have foundered in the past. She also has ringbone and a large hard lump on the side of one knee that doesnt seem to bug her and she still has alot of mobility in the knee. Angles on her feet are pretty bad due to neglect but are getting better. She really post legged in the back but all considered her back legs are in great shape. She is in bad need of dental care. Looking at her teeth I’m guessing she is between 20 and 24 years old. She breaths a bit heavy but her lungs sound O.K. Her throat is rock hard so I’m assuming thats causing her breathing problems. So as you can see not a riding horse. This “rescue” took advantage of a green person which really doesn’t help this horse at all. The owner didn’t realise the amount of money she is going to have to put in the horse and more than likely not ever be able to do much riding. She is looking to find a forever home for this sweet little mare. She can’t afford to board another horse so that she can ride. She is a really sweet old mare. I walked up to her, haltered her and started picking at her legs and mouth and she didn’t protest at all. I can’t even guess what kind of training she has had in the past but I do believe she is broke. She could possibably be used as a very light riding horse in the future with some joint supplements and corrective shoes. What this old girl really wants is for someone to love her. She’s located in Thunder Bay Ontario and haven’t had any luck finding a home for her here. For more info please email me at christina_noto_2@hotmail.com. She will only be going to a forever home that I approve.

Kitten update for anyone interested. Kitty tested negative for Feline leukemia. The reason she could not stand is because she has some swelling around her spinal cord that is going down with anti-inflamitory drugs. She still has a low grade fever, but it’s getting better with the anti-biotics. She is starting to stand on her own as the spinl swelling goes down and can get in and out of the litter box on her own. The ladies at the vets office fell in love with her and one of them is going to adopt her! Thank you for all of your well wishes for this cute little kitten.

The former owner of the mare says she is not pregnant. Of course this is the same piece of shit who dumped her at the sale without papers, so consider the source. I would not take that as gospel, personally. I’d say the jury is out until she gets an ultrasound which I know has not happened yet.
