All the info on the http://www.emeraldracing.com site regarding the auction and horses going to slaughter has been removed. The administrator posted a message saying the use of any names is prohibited. Tim McCanna’s name was on there as being the trainer of at least one horse (Box N Won?). Whether or not he knows where his horses go – who knows? He gives horses to a woman who’s name may be Lisa. She takes them to auction to sell them. I’ve seen horses she’s brought there before.

A list of TBs at the auction Pavillion waiting for the truck this morning was also posted. It,too, is gone. I can understand “racing fans” not wanting to out thier owners and trainers, but what is it they have against saving some horses who were once part of their livelyhood?

I haven’t been an advocate of horse racing in years. This has made the decision that much easier – I’ll never be a fan at EMD again.

Tim McCanna knows where his horses go. I have not heard good things about him.

Before we start rumors here, Eldorado is just BOARDING Alaska Bowtie to my knowledge. The breeder who got lied to by the trainer is John Short. I do not know who the trainer was yet. Feel free to research! :-)

I may have a good rescue interested in the stud and if so, I will tell you where to send donations. He would be gelded asap of course.

Whoever said they were shipping out yesterday was lying to mae us buy. They are there til Wed. at last report. The pregnant overo mare HAS PAPERS and needs a home. Her feet are awful :-( She is very lame.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Ron, or (more likely) his associates and track folks (owners/trainers/etc) are monitoring this blog and the other one. When it comes to the horse world, trust nobody.

Fugly at Heart and Suz. I could contribute something to bailout grey arab gelding who was calling. I’m in Minnesota, so impossible to adopt, but I can contribute some money when I get paid Friday, if you can get him. I have a grey arab gelding and know he would be totally traumatized in a similar situation. I can send by paypal on Friday, or check. whatever, justm have to wait for payday, and would like to help.

What are they monitoring the blog for? Are they coming here to look for a horse they dumped to see which kb bought it? Please explain.

Anyone rescue the chestnut “egyptian” Arab mare? Still may have a “Plan B” with friend in western Oregon who could possibly do a short or long-term foster.

  10. fhotd says:

Ron wants $200 for the chestnut Egyptian mare and she does have papers. 6 years old, I THINK they said allegedly green broke but she was run through in hand.

Scream, he meant that was why they were telling people the horses shipped out at 4:30 last night. You know, just rile us up and get us to buy. Whatever.

Anyone for Ruling Flame? I may have a new advertiser and if she pays today I’ll pay half his bail to the right home. He APPEARS kid broke. You never know, it’s the auction, but he’s definitely sweet tempered and not head shy. I grabbed his lip for his tattoo without protest!

Leroy – I have someone else from your town that may be going back to get a horse this week. I’m going to have HER take a shot at asking the price on those dude mares. Ron gives different prices to different people.

I looked at the Thunderbird Livestock website, looks like the 2 year old stallion that had no bids was Chester. Poor guy, never had a chance. What’s with people that think Walkaloosa’s are gonna be such a great hit? They couldn’t even sell him for $500 as a baby. The thing is, even if they COULD have sold him for $500 as a baby, they wouldnt’ have made any money off him, so what’s the reason for breeding such an animal????

i use a genital method of training, i try to get the horse to work with me not against me. the method i use is called join up. I can get your horses for barrels, poles, gaming, i can start your horse in reining, i can get your horses so they are not as spooky on trails. i will even help you with ponies. i charge $25 an hour. my method dose work i have used it on a lot of horses. I can work with you and your horse. i can help you become one with your horse. if you would like pictures or more information please feel free to ask. The first pic is of an AQHA colt that i got in trade for a pony i used the join up method on him, i got him learning leg cues by the age of 2. The second pic is of am APHA mare that cam to me that was used as a brood mare all her life and her owner wanted her as a trail horse, so with in 3 weeks i got her riding out on trails and in the fields. the third picture is of a colt my father bought that was completely wild, now all he needs is to be trained to ride, he is 100% people friendly now. the last pic is of my Arabian that went completely blind, now i have been riding him again and he is still competing in barrels.

I’m going to have fun writing follow-up blog entries galore from this auction, that’s for sure.

I did not look at her papers. I’m sorry. You can try calling the office but the odds are they won’t be helpful. She had a three series number though, which means they DID have papers in hand on her. The four series numbers had missing or no papers.

I just saw her run through the sale – very typy head, definitely sound, and not tall. That’s all I remember, sorry!

You know, it’s horrible all the horses that do go to slaughter, but it is even worse (if possible) to send a BLIND HORSE (432 – $140 KB – 10yr gray roan Appy gelding, Sound/Gentle/Calm, half draft? – IN DANGER, ALLEGEDLY BLIND) To an auction!!! If you can’t afford to have a vet euth him, find someone with good aim and a steady hand! That poor fella, he must be out of his mind with fear! A local rescue here in Alberta (Bear Valley Rescue), has an older appy with cataracts in both eyes and he is lost without his “seeing eye mare”. We have just adopted a horse from this rescue a preg PB Clyde 3 yr old. She was starved and bred as a 3yr old.

Our auctions up here aren’t any better. I simply can’t go to auctions anymore, it’s too upsetting and I can’t afford to board anymore horses (3 is the limit). Papered weanlings were going for $30! And they were nice, good breeding too! Dead broke, teenage horses were the highest bids at $900-$1000 (these are horses that would have pulled $2-3 thou last summer). Hay in Alberta is so high people are dumping their champs for whatever they can get… A friend of mine picked up a wicked reining horse for $430. This horse kicked ass at their last showing a few weeks ago. Wanna know why he went so cheap?? The owners were too lazy to clean him up, tack him up and ride him in! They walked him in, took his halter off and turned around and left… Thankfully, my friend recognized him from shows last year and scooped him up!

SORT OF OT but not really because I think many people in the south/southeast are sending horses to auctions because they can’t afford to feed them “because of the drought and hay is so scarce.” Well heads up folks – I have a friend who travels to Louisiana every fall to volunteer for housing rehab (think hurricane devastation) and in the countryside north of new Orleans hay farmers are getting their FIFTH cutting of bermuda/coastal/blends hay which is going for $25-$35 for a thousand pound round bale. While you can expect to loose some exterior round bale hay to the elements that still would provide a reasonably priced food for some hungry horses that might otherwise end up at auction. It seems to be very difficult to get the word out about hay availability; I think that netposse used to have a part of their site devoted to this or maybe a link and also the Chronicle forums did the same. I don’t post on Chronicle (man oh man those people are SO RUDE and there’s so much fighting going on that I don’t dare!) but if any Fugly readers wants to take on a cross post, go for it. I DO post on SBR so will be crossposting. There isn’t any one particular contact – seems to be most of the state up-delta.

There is Rolling Dog Ranch in MT that has blind horses. http://www.rollingdogranch.org if anyone would like to contact them and see what it would take to help them out. Steve and Alayne are the people. I may be able to offer a quarantine spot for him until transportation is arranged from Seattle to Overo MT. Anyone want to carry this flag?

poor little fugly, first thing that came to mind is “I have a big head, and no butt, and I don’t think this breeding was very well planned out.” (think Meet the Robinsons) I’m a fan of so-ugly-they’re-cute geldings.

I wish I could help but alas, being in college and in between jobs doesn’t exactly scream ‘i need a horse’, even if i wish it did.

On a related note, if you’re near salem oregon, i would looove to work out horses if anyone has a lack of time. :)

Are you going to do an update on all the rescued horses sometime Fugs? I’d really like to know how they all end up (especially Szizzle and the other Arabs – is someone taking the youngster that kept calling?). Wish right now that I was in the US and could take the 8 yr old Arab gelding with the dodgy hind leg :(
Well done to all those who’ve helped out

Sunvalleysally – that is an excuse people in TN/KY are still using, too, and we’re getting our 3rd cutting of hay with all the rain we’ve had – the only challenge has been timing when to cut so it doesn’t get rained on or sit out for a week. With diesel prices down and lots of hay to spare, I know folks selling mixed-grass horse quality hay for $1.50-$2.50 a bale just to get it out of the barn to fit their next load in.

  38. Jay says:

With all due respect, regarding hay prices, I paid $8.5 (Canadian) a bale here for an 80:20 grass alfalfa mix. Timothy hay was the same price. Local grass, off the field, ran between 4-7$ a bale this year. In some places, hay is more expensive than others. I’m on an island and our price is due to 1. shipping and 2. if local farmers KNOW what their competition from off island is charging so they charge accordingly.

I’m thrilled that some of you can find hay for $2.50 a bale but many people cannot. I certainly know that people use cost as an excuse but with the cost rising every year, in some places it’s becoming more and more prohibitive for many folks. I can rationalize it because I can keep three horses in hay for a month for the same price as I was paying two years ago for board for one horse. However, that’s not including grain and supplements and all of the other “hidden” costs associated with horsekeeping at home.

Actually, neither. She’s as almost as much Egyptian as Polish. Echstravagant is definitely “American -bred” with Polish/Russian/New Egyptian/Spanish/CMK/Babson Egyptian, but more Egyptian than anything else, while Cartier is Pure Polish — and royally bred by Nat’l Ch Bask out of Nat’l Ch Elkana.

It wasn’t just foot care and handling that poor Appy missed out on – it was decent feeding too by the looks of the scrawny neck that makes his rather plain head look even plainer!

Thankfully we still have a couple of good licensed horse slaughterhouses in the UK – better they go there than hidden in unsuitable trucks to be shipped via Ireland to Europe. A LOt of unwanted racehorses here go straight to these slaughterhouses – the racehorse rescue organisations just can’t cope with the wastage! It would of course be far better if far fewer were bred! A few decent owners and trainers DO try to rehome the unwanted ones – or put them down at home.

    Three Arab mares are safe.

The chestnut (Seaside Dawn Delight) is here in my round pen until Saturday. She’s cute, and I am thinking she’s closer to 3 than 6. I haven’t seen her papers as they are being mailed to the gal that bailed her. She acts young and very green on the halter. Herd bound like crazy and a little rambunctious in the trailer. And a little banged up. More pictures coming tomorrow when I have daylight. She’s put together OK, but a little weak in the hind/croup area conformation-wise. Floaty mover. More pics tomorrow.

331 & 325 (Szizzle and a bay) are in May Valley.

I just saw the pictures Latigoliz! Thanks…I already called my “stall guy” to arrange to put another stall in the barn for her. She sure doesn’t look like she’ll be ready to do much but eat for the winter. She is getting a major upgrade! Next spring I will update fugs with pics of her…will be SO cool to see her all fat and shiny. Her butt won’t look so bad with some MEAT on it!

I talked to the BLEEPIN lady who brought her and 3 others there to dump. Lot 321, 426, 427. Get this! 426 is a KHEMOSABI grandaughter! She told me and I quote “I didn’t bring her papers because I figured she’d go for slaughter anyway!!”

    OMG

Then she was shocked when I told her that “Zeus” #321 went to the KB. “he’s a good kids horse, my grandkids ride him everywhere, I can’t believe Zeus went for meat…sigh…oh well”

    YUP…OH FRICKIN WELL!!!

Someone needs to save him if possible. I already dipped savings to get Seaside Dawn Delight and have to travel to get her Saturday.

SOMEONE HELP!! Good kids horse and only 6 years old!

the reason Delight only looks like a 3 year old is because of how she was taken care of. How much you wanna bet that she looks like an adult and grows an inch over winter living with me?? Can’t wait to see her…Thanks for taking care of her for me Liz!!

Prices at Kalona, IA this week were just as bad, if not worse. They were practically begging people to bid on weanlings, yearlings, and donkeys. A good number walked out of the ring without any bids. If prices weren’t traumatic enough, a teenage gelding keeled over and died in the sales ring, pinning his elderly rider to the ground. Quite a day. :(

Hooray and good karma to everyone who managed to save one of these horses! Not to show favoritism — but of course, *especially* the Arabians. :^) It often seems that when an Arabian falls into the wrong hands, the horse *really* falls, with potential stops for Mexican rodeo torture along the way.

I hope we hear more about Szizzle — as her name is making me wonder who else besides Hal Gazal is in that pedigree. Big stars in the crowns of LatigoGal and JustanArabGal for Dawn, as well.

Cathy, you bring up a good point. Why are so many rescues paying Ron extra money when the horses could be purchased outright (at the auction) for less?? When buying from Ron, it seems like people don’t have any additional information on the horses compared to the info available the day of auction. There have not been trial rides, training evals, etc yet he reaps the rewards.

Can’t there be donations put towards a future auction? Perhaps a person can specify “$50 towards arab” or if a person is shopping to purchase a horse.

I know it has probably been discussed before, but it continues to be regrettable that a KB profits off of the soft hearts of horse lovers.

I have two in my pasture that are from Hermiston auction last year- an arab gelding and a papered AQHA mare (who is finally coming sound). She was run through as a slaughter horse- he wasn’t (but the only bidder was a KB). Being able to be there and look at the horses myself made me feel more comfortable about buying them.

I already had an email conversation with fugs. I can contribute $50 to bail out another arab, preferably the young grey gelding. Can’t send until payday (Friday 10/9) Sorry it isn’t more, but that’s what I can do. I’m to far away (MN) to take one. Looks like there are others who would help out on another arab or 2. How would you want money sent?

There are always going to be down-on-their-luck horses at the auction that will be sent to slaughter. As sad as it is to say, we cannot save them all. I agree with everyone who posted that it is morally wrong to be putting more money in the pockets of the kill buyers, especially Ron Mariotti. Save your money and go to Enumclaw on November 1st. You will be able to save 2 or 3 horses for the price Ron is charging for one.

Meanwhile, go out to your pasture or barn and look at the happy horses you have there. Look into their eyes. They are the lucky ones. They know, and they are grateful.

I oppose paying OVER meat price for a horse. Paying $125 – $250 is not putting substantial money in Ron’s pocket OVER what he would make on them for meat. Paying $700 for a CBER horse, yeah, that’s a joke. But if they are going to be sold one way or another, and Ron is getting paid one way or another, I’d rather they wind up safe. That’s my position on it.

  61. aja says:

My personal opinion of buying horses bound for slaughter.

I don’t think it does a bit of good to alienate or slam people like Ron or Ollie. They are businessmen. Yes, it is a shame that their business is buying/selling horses regardless of the outcome, but if it wasn’t them, it would be someone else. Ron doesn’t go door to door and say ‘give me your horse so it can go to slaughter’. If there were not people like Ron then what do you want to do with the horses? Have them starve? Turn them loose? Is it Ron’s fault the economy went downhill and people can’t afford to feed their horse or board them? Is it his fault the kid outgrew the horse and the parents have a ‘throwaway’ attidtude? Why not work WITH the businessman instead of pissing him off by calling him Satan on forums? It’s a debate that can go on and on. That is not my point of this post.

I agree with FHOTD and say that by paying 100% or 200% mark up is reasonable to save a horse from going to slaughter. $250 is a month full of lattes. Paying $400 is the price per pound and that is strictly business. A person buying from a businessman like Ron needs to set their own limits. I was willing to pay more for the horse I got, but I also set a limit and if it’s meant to be it’s meant to be, if not, then move on and hope for the best on the next one.

I was one of the IDIOTS that bought a horse from CBER and paid $1300 plus for a horse that was already safe. Instead I paid $130 for one that was bound to Canada. Now I need to find her a home. Going to the auction is out of the question for me. One reason is time, two is I don’t know what I am looking at other than color, three, I don’t know who the players are and I could be bidding against someone who is going to give the horse a good home. My goal is to prevent a horse from going to slaughter. I did that and perhaps I will regret it later when I have to go buy hay instead of getting new snow tires for my car. Oh well, that was the CHOICE I made.

BOLDSLASS I sent you an email.

CATHY. It would be easier if you coordinated the buy yourself. The number of the auction house is 360.825.3151 and you can post your email for people to contact you and donate. I can provide a temporary home. We are not being cold, but are at work and need to make sure we don’t get fired for posting on forums!

This dance is going to happen again next month, and the month after that and after that. No, we can not save them all, but we can save a few and that is what is important.

    Peace be with you.

    Agree with fhotd.
Also, sometimes it takes the sheer horror of the auction report to get people to react and respond, financially and with homes. Seems like homes, foster or permanent is as big a problem as funding. Plus, you don’t know until you get there what you will find. If buying them after tha fact saves a few more, than so be it. That being said, the idea of an “auction fund” isn’t a bad idea, but the management of said fund could potentially cause some problems I would imagine. Maybe it’s just as simple as letting people know a week in advance that you are going if they want to pitch in.

Again, I will contibute up to $50 this week (Friday) if someone can bailout another arab, preferably the young grey gelding. (Aja are you out there?)

Ok, I can certainly make some calls to coordinate a buy. But, my biggest dilemma is location. I have no way of getting a horse here. So at the risk of driving you crazy with additional questions. I have to ask a few more, In addition to a temporary home, can you pick up, or have suggestions for how to get it from auction to your place? Also how long is temporary, and what would you need for board, etc? Understand I am way across the country and wouldn’t be able to physically do anything. That’s why I was offering to help financially only.

So, ALL OF YOU FOLKS THAT SAID YOU WANTED TO HELP ANOTHER ARAB, please respond to me with EXACTLY what you can do.
If money, how much , when and how.
Can you transport to Aja? Or somewhere else if necessary.
Do you have a home for said horse, but just need some help with bailing them out and initial costs for feet, vaccines,
etc that the rest of us can contribute towards.

If you have a LEGITIMATE way to contribute email me at cmitchell@stcloud.gannett.com TODAY.
Otherwise, we will just have to let this one go.

Although I’m happy to go to the auction with anyone as a second set of eyes, I do want to reiterate that every auction horse is a TOTAL crap shoot. If you cannot handle a horse with some issues or if you HAVE to get a horse that is sound, please adopt from a rescue instead – it makes a lot more sense. That way you get something already evaluated and vetted (at least the good rescues – SAFE, Pony Up, SCR, for those of you local to me).

None of us have a good enough eye to see everything. Look at my last year, Colin/Petersburg Knight turned out awesome, the next one I pulled, Lucy, not so much. There are long term tranquilizers that don’t show the obvious effects of Ace. You just don’t know. This absolutely IS gambling and like going to the casino, not a good idea if you can’t afford it.

Cathy is so right about auction horses being a gamble. I bought a stunning semi leopard, red dun appy, sound, good bone and quiet. Turns out he was drugged and dangerous. This horse dumped everyone that rode him and put two of us in the hospital. I was nothing but kind to him and he intentionally hurt me. Ten years later I still live with the back/hip pain from that horse. I regret not putting him down after he injured myself and my trainer. I found him a pasture home and fully disclosed his bucking issues so no one else was hurt.

I will say that I continue to believe that 90% of horse misbehavior if not more is pain related. And plenty is bad training related. The VAST majority of horses ARE fixable. But not all.

99% are fixable, in my opinion. Sometimes it takes a few trainers. SAFE’s Whiskey was pronounced unrideable and is now a much loved personal trail horse, for example.

But all horse purchases are a gamble, to a certain degree. We could have a blog about drugged horses purchased from big name farms and I bet we’d hear some wild stories.

I just called on #334, the young grey gelding. They will take $200 for him and they take VIsa. One of my dillemmas all along has been I can’t donate until FRiday when I get paid.

I have at least one other person willing to pay as much as $100 and I could also contribute $50 to $100 to bail him out. AJA has agreed to temporarily house him (at cost) while we find him a new home. But we would need to come up with some money for his costs as well.

Does anyone else want to help. First bail him out and let us pay you back via paypal, otherwise we have to wait until Friday, when I have enough money in my debit VISA account. (Yes this is insane) PLus we need donations for care.

Both I and the other donor are not geographically able to take him in ourselves.

    The View From Your Recession

    A reader writes:

My father is a Thoroughbred breeder in Virginia. For pure breeding operations such as his, the cash flow works as follows: mare is bred early in the year, foal is born early the next year. Stud fee is due once foal stands and nurses, in most cases. The following September, the yearling is sold at auction. This year, between 50% and 75% of yearlings sold for less than the stud fee paid. As a result, breeders do not have the cash on hand to pay the stud fees for mares that are now in foal. Mares are being put down so that the foal cannot stand and nurse, and the stud fee is then not due. Just to clarify, my dad has not and will not be putting down any mares, but anecdotally, it is happening.

I haven’t had the guts to actually attend any auctions near me, but I just can’t imagine nice horses going for $100 or less in Massachusetts. The prices people post online here for untrained fuglies seem very, very optimistic.

I’ll keep checking in here to see if you get a report back on the two mares…happy to chip in to help get them over to Katie’s, but I’m afraid I can’t do a lot more than that. Damn recession…
