I can’t figure out if he was trying to geld himself or run away from home!
Aug 27 2009
“Meet Star. He is a double registered tri-color Paint stallion. His job is to look beautiful and to make babies that are as beautiful as he is… there was a pretty bay mare involved on the wrong side of the fence in his opinion.”
(By now, not-so-gentle readers, I know your collective heads are exploding with a few major facts: (a)Star is fugly and underweight (b) if he produces babies just like him, we’re all scared (c)what kind of moron puts a stud right next to the mares, and (d) did her kids make that fence as their 2nd grade art project? But of course, we are not done here. Now we have to see them try to get him out of this mess.)Â
Anyone of average intelligence would look at this and realize the entire section of fence should be removed by one or more adults while another adult concentrates on keeping the horse calm (and possibly tranq’s him to ensure that happens). What does Mary Sunshine here do? She gets her young daughter out to help, of course!
I am not quite sure what they thought was going to happen here. My only thought is, I sure hope Mr. Kittycat isn’t already on his ninth life!
Then of course there’s the kid, who as far as we know, only has one life and is in imminent danger of seeing that one end shortly.
Well, small child couldn’t pull Spotty McFuglypants back over the fence, so Genius Mom hits upon a fresh idea. “Then we decided he wasn’t going anywhere. He knew he needed us. So we figured we would try to caox him with that pretty bay mare that turned his head in the first place. So we had her stroll by, hoping he would follow.”Â
*headdesk*Â *headdesk*Â *headdesk*
We’re not done.

“Well he didn’t go for that, but it did work when we put her inside his pen…But of course he got his foot caught and we had to lift it out, he is so good about never kicking but you still have to use caution. Horses can bite or kick when scared, panicked or threatened. Thankfully this one is very calm.”
Yes, because he’s thin and wormy-looking and doesn’t have the energy to behave like a normal stallion with a mare under his nose, which is the only reason you’re not in intensive care right now.
Well, in case this blog entry didn’t say enough about the kind of operation Mary Sunshine is running out there in Tennessee, I googled her phone number from her whois and found her farm site. Read it and weep. Some of these horses should be seized by animal control. Where in the Bible does it say “starve thy horses and the kingdom of Heaven shall be yours?”  You freakin’ hypocrite. Stop popping out horses AND kids and take proper care of what you’ve already got!Â
(Side note: That filly is just horrid and should never have been brought into the world. For anybody wanting to know what calf knees are, look at those front legs. There ya go.)Â
(Oh, and she apparently has FIVE stallions.  All hungry. Color me not surprised…)Â
P.S. Hey, Mary Sunshine? You know that ticker on your Pennyraine site about how many babies will be killed by abortion? Now I’m not saying it’s wrong to be pro-life but don’t you think it’s a little hypocritical not to be more concerned about the life you already brought into this world? Your KID should not be handling a horny stallion who’s caught in a fence and I don’t care WHAT your excuses are.Â
So – obvious trainwreck. Interesting side question for you guys – did anybody grow up in a family like this but evolve into a responsible horseperson?  If so, what made you change?  Was there an individual who influenced you, or was it an experience with horses that altered your thinking? Was it merely getting out into the real world and educating yourself?  How do we stop this cycle from continuing? The woman’s got eight kids…that’s a lot of future potential horses in need of rescue…

Ok, so beyond the fact that these people are stupid enough to let this sort of thing happen in the first place, who’s the idiot who decided to photograph the event and then PUT IT ON LINE?!?! *headdesk*. I do not know how to break the cycle. Finding people to respect and listening to your voice in your head that says maybe there’s a better way to do things when you see something stupid?
unfortunately, i see this type of ignorance all the time in my neighbors. lack of care, lack of basic horse-husbandry, and, worse of all, lack of knowledge of their own ignorance. over the last eight years i have consistently said something to them when the opportunities have presented themselves. does it do any good? i always thought i was wasting my time, until i realized that their horses are not left to half-starve in the winters anymore, and that they are cleaning the place up a lot more. they still do incredibly stupid, dangerous stuff with their animals, but i do see some improvement. so, i guess it does help to continue to say things in a constructive manner (trying very hard not to judge them) and not to look the other way. as frustrating as it is, it does seem to help the poor, unfortunate animals in their care.
Well you have to love the articistic design of sticks that make up their fence. It really is very pretty. Almost as good as using snowfencing … oh damn.. it’s too early for that to come out yet.
it is also sad to see what a sweet face that stallion has. why does it seem that cretins like that always have the kind-eyed horses who put up with the mis-handling? i had a 1400 lb, 17.3 hand, tb who was retired at my farm a while back (biggest horse who has ever boarded with me). would like to see them get something like him out of that situation…… there would be death and destruction for miles! he hee.
Testing for avatar…
Yippee! it works.
Not only do I learn about horses here – have learned a bunch about the web too!
As for today’s post – it must be crazy week on the horse front. The local CraigsList is full of ridiculousness. Is it the phase of the moon or?????
Wow. I see a LOOOOOOOOOT of people who do wrong things play the “But I’m a CHRISTIAN” card.
This is one of the more extreme examples, but it’s pretty self-explanatory.
I know a woman whose father was actually busted for starving horses when she was a teen. She’s grown up to be a very nice horseperson, though. Makes me happy to see that. In fact her horses are a little chubby.
Her dad was an utter TOOL.
Not only are these “Christian” rednecks starving their horses, they’re not worming them, either. I shudder to think what their feet probably look like.
Why do people put up horrible photos like this and then act all PROUD!!??!?!?! Is it like being Anorexic?
Shit, I visited the site… and wept. That lady has more websites than I would know what to do with.. selling various things. I think she spends more time updating websites and blogs than looking at the horses in her backyard. Nevermind feeding them.
Okay, I’ll bite.
I grew up near highways with bad/no fencing and countless dogs getting hit and killed by cars. Now as an adult with my own property, all of my animals are behind secure fencing and do not get to experience car chasing. I’d rather not scoop them off the road and tell my kids.
However, it takes a real serious idiot to document their own stupidity. And hey, we’ve all done stupid things (although who would put a stud next to a mare?!?!?) but then to just KEEP GOING??!!??!! Hopefully her teenage children will be embarrassed by her website someday.
Oh…. my…. god. I feel sorry for everyone involved here, except the owner. I feel sorry for the kid for having such idiot parents, and I feel terrible for that poor horse.
That poor palomino filly breaks my heart. I want to take her home. I’m not sure what I would DO with a horse with that unbelievable conformation (except feed her), but maybe she could make herself useful somehow. As a lawn mower?
I haven’t known of good horsefolk coming from idjits, but I’ve seen the opposite: Jerkwads descended from good horsefolk!
Usually the good horsefolk were the parents who took care of the horse, paid and managed the tack, the horse, the feed, the vet, the farrier, and so on, while the kid got on and rode. The kid apparently never learned the facts of horse care and expenses, and expected that such things Happened Magically and would continue to do so when mom and dad retired and/or passed away.
The kids “know all about horses”, of course, and their current equines are expected to thrive on air, never require veterinary care, and file their own hooves. Oh, yes, and be push-button perfect at all times under saddle, or suffer the consequences.
Which provides an object lesson in making your children part of the *work* of owning horses — and if they don’t want to do the work, keeping the horses for YOURSELF!
I checked out her website and found this post…http://pennyraine.com/blog/2009/07/dare-to-try/
Yikes!
Regarding the final point, I definitely now realize how unbelievably ignorant my folks and I were when they bought my first horse when I was 11 yrs old (which did result in broken bones for me). I definitely now try to guide the very young first time owners and their parents at our stables. Most are very willing to listen if you are gentle with your guidance but some are like talking to a brick wall and you just have to hope for the best and steer clear of them.
As a person who is a Christian, it makes me very upset when people like this go around spouting off about their beliefs (or plastering them all over the internet), and yet act like such dimwits. It kind of makes us all look bad.
A real Christian should know that the Bible tells us over and over again we are to be “good stewards” of the blessings we’ve been given. Hmm…perhaps Mary Sunshine doesn’t realize that means God wants to take care of things like our planet, natural resources, the animals, etc. etc. Oh yeah, and our kids, too.
To roughly paraphrase a verse, if you can’t be trusted with a “little thing,” how can you be trusted at all?
My Dad was in the USAF so lotsa moving as a youngster, but by my middle teens we were back home in KY. I remember a Saddlebred gelding in a paddock at our neighbors that was no more than a 1.5 BSL, or whatever you call it. Didn’t dare say a word to my folks in criticism, though it was right in front of their nose also, cos they would have lectured me on minding my own business and hush ” what will the neighbors think”. I used to pull trash bags of grass for hours to feed to this poor old man. I think you are either born with an empathy and concern for animals, or not. And no amount of education can make you truly care. Some may conform to get the most performance, appearance, etc out of the horse. But they never truly feel for the animal. I was not born to a horsaii family, and still at 49 years of age get criticism about the amount of money they take. Finally, at this age I have stopped caring what others think. Glad these folks are not my neighbors, but believe me, I’ve seen much worse. Animal Control would not even stop at this house, which is the real shame, because this time of year they should be fat. Winter is coming and they can only go downhill. They have to be half dead before anyone will do anything.
I am utterly speechless other than this comment on the filly:
Uh…. :\ Where did her cannons go?
The link “meet star” has a copyright warning. :\
I was told to come on this site to try to find my two horses. They were last seen in Portland Tennessee. One is a white Percheron Mare and the other a red lineback dun Quarter cross gelding. I have pictures of them. Please help me if you can!
They must have deleted the website??
Urbancowgirl – what happened to them? Stolen, sold, what? Where were they seen last and when? Do you have pics online?
HAHA! Have you seen she has gone back and edited her old post and threatening prosecution?
Urbancowgirl777~~~I live in Cookeville, Tennessee, do you have any pictures anywhere online, or you can email them to me, who knows, they could be in my area. Oh, regarding the topic, unfortunately, I see this alot around here(middle Tennessee). I get so mad at some of these idiot rednecks that could care less about their horses, it makes me sick.
Why do they ALL think republishing someone else’s photos on the web is a criminal offense?
Oh yeah, lack of education. I knew there was a reason…
Could someone explain to me exactly how to get an avatar, duh…….
I would actually love to see this guy’s breeding… he looks almost exactly like one of the horses at the barn I muck at… He was a PMU foal (he’s coming on 5 now), and he had some expensive surgery because he couldn’t walk properly. Needless to say, it’s cheaper to geld one than feed ten more.
And something just doesn’t look right with that filly’s back legs… would someone care to enlighten me?
For those of you who can’t understand why someone would put a stallion next to a mare. Sometimes you have no choice. And sometimes the stalion has some sense and stays where he belongs. Mine is housed next to mares 24/7. He is contained with hot wire that is rarely turned on. I can walk him down the isle with just a length of twine looped around his neck. It’s all in the training and what’s between the ears.
39 years ago, when my mother bought me my first horse (lucky me), she insisted that I feed the horse so much hay, everyday, twice a day AND give it so much rolled oats, once a day, everyday. If she thought that my horse was getting too thin (nothing like we’ve seen here), then she had me increase his feed.
I could not ride the horse unless it was clean, either! I’m not talking, knock off the chunks and saddle up. I’m talking, she had to check it before I could saddle him and if she patted the horse on the hiney and it went “poof” with dirt, she said, “Nope. Brush him some more.”
She did not have me wear a helmet. (The last several years, I do not ride without a helmet.) I rode that horse everywhere, almost every day. She purchased the hay, called the farrier and purchased whatever the horse needed. *I* took care of the horse. She insisted that *I* take care of the horse. Good for her! I learned.
Fast forward to 5 years ago. We got 6 horses. Because I started with some kind of intelligent, caring, empathetic person (my mom), I had a clue what was needed to tend to a horse; not enough, but a clue. I’ve learned much, much more out of a need to know situation. I’m constantly, learning.
But how smart or blind does one need to be, to know or to see, that an animal is starving? You can’t fix stupid and you can’t fix lazy. Idjuts.
I did, I was introduced to horses via my grandfather at a very young age of 5. I was put on the back of a 15 hand horse and told to stay on, nothing about helmets, what to do or when to do it. Run in sheds were muncked once a year the vet only came in extreme emergencies and I dont think I ever saw a farrier. Grandpa would breed to any old stallion and let the mare have the baby without any prenatal care (luckily he never lost a one). He was a farmer all his life and depended on the horses to work the fields I have pitcures of him with his first horse in the late 1920′s. I must say that all of the animals were fed and watered before anyone had breakfast or dinner. I never saw any animals on his farm in poor or questionable condition. His means of training were along the lines of submission. That s also how my farther was raised and when I got my first horse at age 13 that is how I was taught.
Bless her heart Buttercup was a wonderful pony, that made the trip from my grandfathers farm in NC to our house VA in the back of a truck. We moved into a subdivision that was set up for horse farms, my neighbor across the road was a godsent. She showed me how the horses should be cared for got me into showing and pony club and 4-H. My parents went to all of the shows, clinics and seminars with me. By the time I was 18, I was going to shows on the A circuit and was responsible horse owner and my parents were right there learning with me. Buttercup passed away 2 years ago at my parents house where she lived out her life with us. They also have my other 2 previous show horses and they will stay with us till they pass. Stalls are muncked every day, farrier every 6 weeks, and the vet knows my phone number by heart. I have bred one horse with a friend of mine (mental note to self, I will never breed again, it is much easier to buy a yearling). We sold the Trak. colt for 6K, but I am over the whole breeding thing, it is not for me. I am married now and have two horses at my house one for my son and one for me. I will bring my son up so he will not have to go through the learning curve that I did.
I am sorry for the mistakes that I made. They were truley made because of lack of correct knowledge. It just took a good person to point me in the direction. I have no hard feelings for my grandfather, by the time I was educated he no longer had any ponies. He was the man that started my love of horses.
I feel that I had a special person that helped me out and gave me the benefit of the doubt. She was able to get me going in the right direction and my I learned the rest on my own through education and great experiences.
very, very scary. and the one who would have gotten the Darwin Award is the KID, not Mary Sunshine.
Lookout Fugs, she’s gearing up to sue! See below, copied from another BB. The person who posted this “has permission” (snort) and appears to be the person who warned Mary Sunshine that you did this blog entry about her… (BTW, the link to her website doesn’t seem work now)
“Thank you for your concern . They posted it anyway, I am also a publisher and do have an attorney that is very well versed in copyright law, I am going to kindly ask them to remove it and then I will pursue legal action starting with Cathy Atkinson in Seattle, feel free to spread the word. Many of the horses we have we aquired in cooperation with local law enforcement to prevent folks who couldn’t care for them from going to jail. They all have food constantly in front of them from the day they get here. So I am the bad guy huh for feeding a horse that couldn’t get feed any other way. I am the bad guy for saving a life. I am the bad guy for showing what a sweet horse this boy is. I am a bad guy for putting him in a temporary pen instead of letting someone shoot him. And I am certainly a bad guy for teaching my children to care.
No wonder horse folks have such a bad reputation.
you have my permission to share the above.

If I read that right, it looks like this thing was a faux rescue. She got the horse but the people who neglected it didn’t get prosecuted. Oh. That’s greaaaat.
Check out this ad! *shakes head =(

This is not a problem of only the uneducated equine owner. Many many years ago this very thing occurred at Rolling Rock (yep! home of the steeple chase in PA). Folks had brought a mare in to be bred and the ‘jumping’ stallion was kept just on the other side of the fence. Needless to say, at some point he dropped and took a flying leap over the fence …except the ‘dropped’ part, it didn’t quite make it. Well, it got broke and the owners were going to put the stud down. An oldtyme vet was called in and he told them that he couldn’t save him as a stud but could as a gelding. And sure enough, he did.
OMG what a sad joke these people are :0
I went to their website (double OMG with whipped cream, sparklers and a gold star!!!!!) what a totally over the top collection of religious claptrap. My apologies to the sane Christians out there of which these folk clearly do not belong – talk about flogging the proverbial dead horse – which they have no doubt had experience with judging by their appalling equine handling skills(?).
I couldn’t find any horsey references on the site however other than a link to a pony something so obviously they’ve pulled the offending site but seriously, where has common sense and humanity gone?
I’m speechless and just pray (which coming from a non religious person is something) that the equines in their care find salvation before they actually need it!!
She pulled the sight because someone from the very forum who sent the blog into fhotd felt sorry for her.
This, I will NEVER understand. The sympathy card, the “they arent hurting anyone,” “It’s mean to make fun of them,”
Dont be an idiot and you wont be made fun of. Jesus christ it is not that difficult.
I will respond at more length in the morning, but her argument that this stallion is a rescue is belied by her own words that his “job” is to make babies. Sure sounds like a personal horse to me! We GELD rescued stallions. Also, almost ALL of her horses are thin – the filly is not an isolated case. Finally, it’s nice that her children care about animals – too bad she does not care enough not to put them in harm’s way. There is no set of circumstances in which a child should be enlisted to help you detangle a stallion from a fence – especially with the mare he is trying to get to brought into the mix! It’s a horny stallion, not a stuffed toy!
But apparently Penny plans to call the police about me.
Go for it,
Star looks like he’s thinking “FML” in the first photo…
Totally OT.
Love this blog and have nominated it for an ‘Honest Scrap’ award. I have the feeling you will have received this before from many other bloggers! The award can be ‘picked up’ at HorseTrainingSuccess
Loved this comment from http://pennyraine.com/blog/2009/08/mom-tip-105/
“mom tip #105
It is 10:49, do you know where your children are? Do you know who they are with? Do you know what they are doing?
How can we be good parents without knowing? If they are still living in your home you need to know
.
Surprisingly even moms of toddlers don’t know what their children are doing half of the time. Or where they are at.
Very. Scary. Thought.”
To me, the scary thought is that this stallion is reproducing! Seriously, how about “It is 10:49, do you know where your horses are?”
Aside from the questions of fixing the problem, then putting photos on the internet about it, how long did it take from putting the stallion next to the mares to finding him half over the fence? Did they think he was just saying “Hi!”, or didn’t he trumpet his intentions long before he jumped? How often do they check on their horses, and did no one have the sense to notice he was getting worked up, or did this just happen without warning?
At least they wont be able to advertise him as a terrific jumper (hunter-jumper prospect, anyone).
Check this out. It’s from Victoria, Australia.
http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/the-wiz-living-the-life-of-riley/2009/08/27/1251001988183.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1
The interesting part? She runs her stallion in with his mother. When asked about any risks she says” ”I can’t answer that. He doesn’t serve his mother. You would know if he did. He’s got more manners than most people I’ve met,” said an indignant Fraser to The Age’s inquiry regarding any possible incest.”
Also no mention of how she gets veterinary or farrier, etc services out to French Island. From Wikipedia – “French Island is relatively isolated and undeveloped. There are no mains water, mains electricity, or medical services on the island. There is one small general store and post office located on Tankerton Road about 3 km from Tankerton Jetty. Many of the locals actively promote environmental tourism. There is a range of accommodation from camping, Bed and Breakfast, Guesthouse, to McLeod Eco Farm (former prison farm).”
Proof that there are nutters the world over.
I agree with all of your points, so I’m going to make a comment about her “TRI-COLORED” stallion. She obviously knows what a bay is. Why is it that these people can’t figure out that he is nothing more than a bay with spots????? It drives me absolutely nuts to hear that “tri-colored” BS!!!
I cringe at the conformation of the horse in the last picture. I reckon she’s condemned to being an uncomfortable ride with health issues due to that body. Such a shame!

I strongly disagree with the statement. You ALWAYS have a choice. If you can’t properly house a stallion then YOU DON’T NEED ONE!
Yeah- If you want tri-color, get a beagle.
Maybe there’s on good thing to come out of this – by the way the horse is stranded on the fence in the first photo, he may well have gelded himself!
I’m just wondering where in middle TN she is. Studly would make a cute, cute little gelding with some attention. If she IS near Cookeville, you can bet the #1 buyer of her foals are shoppers at the Cookeville sale paying $50-$75 per. Yeah, that’s SO worth breeding more of every year.
I’ve often wondered at people who, in the midst of a scary/dangerous situation think…oooh, I need to grab the camera to record this self-created assinine display to share with the rest of the world so they will sympathize with me.
Wow. That’s insane. Too bad the website seems to be down.
I hope she’s not trying to hide the condition of her horses!
Off topic, this article (the first story) reminds me of your recent post about humans abusing animals as a way to inflict emotional distress on other humans. Such a sad, terrible thing, but I’m so glad this guy was caught!

I live in Cookeville, Tennessee
Well, howdy neighbor. I work in Cookeville, live about 45 minutes away on the KY/TN state line. I agree, it’s horrible around here in regards to horse husbandry, and there’s no such thing as animal control when it comes to neglect or abuse. There’s a few good folks around but we’re the ones out there hacking it alone and trying to stay away from the crazy.
Regarding the stolen horses for Urbancowgirl: There’s a large (for the area), horse sale in Cookeville TN every Tuesday evening. I have gone there in the past to look for stolen horses or when I suspected a horse I knew of might end up there. Unfortunately, since it’s a weekly sale, horses get turned over quick and off to kill within a short time, if they were stolen for a quick dollar. The good news is that if you’re reasonably sane and friendly, most of the regulars and workers at the sale will work with you, not against you.

yes, it IS all in the training – of the HANDLER/OWNER. I dont care how calm/quiet/wellbehaved/angellic your stallion is, he is a STALLION. anyone who handles a stallion w/ “just a length of twine looped around his neck” is a freaking idiot just begging to be killed. Accidents happen. Mares come in heat. Stallions get excited. Period. You are very lucky you have not yet been hurt. Its only a matter of time.
Also, no one says you cant turn out a stallion next to mares – just use a REAL FENCE.
Here’s my take:
I think that owning a well behaved stallion can easily make you careless.
You’ve all heard the whole tale of the VLC, who exemplifies “born broke” and really never gave me a hard time about anything. The vast majority of the time he ignores mares. Once in a while he thinks one is really sexy and tries to talk to them but for the most part, he learned early that there were going to be mares in his barn and mares in his arena and mares in paddocks he was going to have to walk past.
But…you always have to be aware and reading your horse. As Caztan accurately noted, this horse probably was not standing quietly one minute and hung up on the fence the next. When your stallion starts rumbling at a mare, THAT’S when you take action – if he’s in hand, you growl at him and back him up and refocus him. If you’re on him, you put him on the aids and give him something to do to distract him. If he’s in a field with a shitty fence and you see that happening, that’s the point at which you ought to realize the situation is about to deteriorate. You do not wait until control is lost and there is a wreck. It’s the same thing with the horse from the Reichert Celebration…I doubt he was loping quietly with his head down and on top of that filly the next second without giving the rider any warning. When you are on them, you know when you are losing their attention. And if you don’t, you need more coffee!
Are there fences solid enough to keep a stallion off a mare in heat? Sure. Is it better to keep them a pasture apart to minimize the risk of your stallion hurting himself? Absolutely. They are eternal teenage boys – they are run by their hormones and have very little sense of self-preservation, so anything you can do to protect them is a good thing.
By the way everybody – you can use all HTML tags in these comments. INCLUDING POSTING PICS WOO HOO!
So feel free.
I grew up working my summers in a pay to ride stable where nothing much was done correctly. I grew up, left there, eventually bought my own place, and promptly started breeding poor fuglies, as that was all I knew. It took one day for me to visit a breeder that bred quality AQHA horses for me to realize that “Hmmmm, my stud doesnt look like his, hmmmmm.” I asked him , lol, why his horse had so much more muscle than mine and why he was so much larger. He was very polite, but didnt hold back. He told me I had no business breeding my horses. That none of them were breeding quality, and I should geld my stud. At first I was offended, but I went home and took a long look at my boy, and realized I had been wearing mommy goggles. I gelding him a month later, kept my babies that were already growing in my mares, and stopped breeding. That was about 8 years ago, and I will never breed again. I am so thankful that he was able to get through to me. I had never been up close to a quality horse before then. I had only seen the trail horses and mine was better than those , so I thought I had something good. I now preach to anyone that will listen, to try to get them not to breed. I also had to relearn the correct way to care for horses and feed them, but that didnt take me near as long becuase I always felt sorry for the skinny trail horses.
Glad things are sorting out and I could figure things out (DEFINITELY not a given). However, I have nothing intelligent to say about this lunacy other than JUST STOP (please spare your daughter and your cat)!
Wow, amazing. That whole excuse about the stallion being a rescue? Yeah, okay. So WTF are you doing breeding him instead of gelding him? Ugh.
I have to mention that after cking out this womens site, it is obvious that both those girls in the pictures with the horse are her daughters, and she is most likely the one with the camera. That ,somehow to my mind, makes the incident much worse. What mother would stand back and take pictures of her children in this potentially very dangerous situation?
I have to agree that she’s super scary – I noticed the ads for ‘modest clothing’ on her site, which makes me guess she’s one of those super-duper evil fundies that give religious people the world over a bad name.
Why not starve her horses? They’re not going to get into heaven, so fuck ‘em, right?
Years ago, when I was at a place that had a stallion (16.2 hunter) the BO took all sorts of precautions to make sure there were no accidental breedings – 8′ fences with hot tape, reinforced stall doors, etc.. This guy was really well behaved, but still why take the chance?
Studly has a nice face – he could make a cute gelding for some trail rider out there… he sure as hell shouldn’t be making babies though!
My stupid (yet overeducated) brother decided long ago that for his 405th get-rich-quick scheme, he’d breed thoroughbreds. He started by buying a stallion with bad knees and made progressively worse decisions, like turning them all out on a 100 acre farm together so as to toughen them and let the weak ones die off. His feeding operation is to wade through knee deep mud to dump a bag of cheap sweet feed into several old bathtubs he has scarfed from the junkyard. His “barn” literally fell down around the horses last year. There are carcasses all around. He’s been unable to sell any of them for years and years; last month a next door neighbor offered to take one decent looking mare off his hands and asked how much he wanted for it (untrained, unbroke, never has seen a vet or a farrier of any kind, never been haltered, never been groomed) and he said — ready? — $2500.
Talk about your headdesk.
He continues to offer “free” ones to me, and I continue to turn him down. He has no idea why I don’t want them.
He has inspired me to be a diligent and careful horse owner, and I am an active member of a horse rescue organization, trying to undo some of the wrong he has done.
His wife, who now hates all equines with a passion since SHE has had to support his addiction all these years, has recently discovered the New Holland Auction. If only she can get them on a stock trailer. By herself. In the night.
Here is something I think you might have something to say about!
http://www.rvhr.com/twosocks.shtml …dont know how else to send it to you!
oh wow, I just noticed the cat in pic #2. Who is about to be trampled if that girl succeeds in yanking the horse back over the fence.
What I don’t understand is, how do these kinds of people not get killed regularly? I mean, I’ve seen plenty of accidents occur in nice, upper level training facilities where people are doing everything RIGHT. I just don’t get how these people make it through a week around horses in these kinds of situations and conditions without ending up in the emergency room.
Oh. Em. Gee!
I thought that filly was comped together out of 6 different horses! That head! That neck! That spine! Those legs!
Ow. And WHY would you post these pix on your website if you’re trying to sell the babies of that gonky horse? Apparently she doesn’t believe in genetics, and thinks his stupidity and bullheadedness won’t be passed on? Along with his odd body shape and horrible coat quality!
Not all homeschooling is bad, the public schools have their own brand of nutjobs. Poor stud, would make a nice gelding. Glad to see fhotd back!

I read that! What a disgrace! And they call themselves a rescue, put the poor fella out of his misery! He will never have a decent quality of life anymore… just pain. Can you imagine watching your horse “step out” of his hoof! I would have euthanized him long before it got that bad!
As for the current post, all I can say is Did those horses get any of your so called “Tennessee Manna???”. You obviously have a computer, READ UP ON HORSE CARE!!! Animals need food and basic care. So stop praying and start paying! ~ Yes I do pray, this is not a slight to anyone but this zealot. She can type the words of Jesus and God, but doesn’t read them obviously.
I thought the filly was a rescue when I scrolled down. OH MY…..
I knew some home schooled girls that were great. Their parents were well grounded, educated folks that had a stretch of “trailer” living. Like myself. My life style changed due to economy, but my mare’s didn’t. The other family knew nothing about horses when I first met them but they gave first rate care and concern, as FIRST TIME horse owners they asked questions and learned.
Being spiritual should not be confused with religion. It took me a few years to figure the difference.
scamperfast, don’t you think you should take some pictures and call the authorities on your brother?
“His feeding operation is to wade through knee deep mud to dump a bag of cheap sweet feed into several old bathtubs he has scarfed from the junkyard. His “barn†literally fell down around the horses last year. There are carcasses all around.”
Take your sister goggles off. What does this look like to you?
Oh my gosh. This is horrible. I’ve seen stronger Breyer (c) fences. I have seen this style fencing as decoration. But i have a question. I am moving boarding barn due to many problems at my current one and is this fencing strong? i doubt my little mare will do anything, but just wondering-
http://www.declanlandy.com/images/Stablemesh/IMG_0312.JPG but it has like a rope on it I think it is electric it’s on top.
He was definately trying to geld himself.
Hello Fugly! I’m somthing of a long-time reader/lurker, and I enjoy your blog greatly. It’s as educational as it is snarky, and of course, the stupid horse owners you showcase so often make me *HEADDESK/FACEPALM* on a frequent basis.
Now, onto this post: let it be known I cannot stand Quiverfullers. By themselves, they’re bad enough, but when they engage in backyard breeding practices like this? It makes it so much worse. I will admit in spite of myself, that first picture is funny, even though I feel so sorry for that poor horse.
I’ll admit, that little stud’s got a really cute face…but beautiful? That stocky, awkward body and that godawful coat? Err…yeah. Sure. He’s likely full of worms and underfed, if the coat’s any indication. I’m no expert when it comes to conformation, but I’m pretty sure a paint’s not supposed to look like that. He’d make a nice little trail pony for someone…but allowing him to breed? GOOD LORD NO. For God’s sake, geld him! And castrate your other stallions while you’re at it, lady! I didn’t get a chance to see her other stallions (I’m sure they’re “stellar” breeding stock, if Star is anything to go by. *snorts*)
Of course, where I live in the Midwest, we get these backcountry whackjobs that breed like rabbits, all in the name of GAWD. Gotta love the Bible Belt. QFers take that Bible verse “Go forth and multiply” far, far too literally, even extending it to the animals in their care. “Oh, I can’t geld my stallions, that’s against God’s will! It would be interfering with His perfect design!” Yeah. That’s how these people think. I’m also willing to bet she doesn’t spay or neuter her cats and dogs. Like others have said, she adheres to the philosophy “If it has a uterus, it must be bred!”
And pertaining to your other post: It’s sickening that she has the gall to beg for handouts after she’s essentially dug her own grave by breeding like a rabbit, and allowing her animals to do so. Apparently, she’s never heard the old adage: “If you can’t feed them, DON’T BREED THEM!” That applies to both animals AND children.
Indeed, these nutballs give real, SANE Christians a bad name. Not to mention responsible horse breeders.
My parents purchased a stunning morgan mare, she was a ‘Bluechip’ investment. But that’s where the quality stopped. We had a pole barn that was never finished, no trailer, and could not afford things like regular vet or shoer. We had 2 fillies that were fill sisters to Mantic Peter Frost – and they were smallish but very pretty little firecrackers. They were never taught to clip, haul, tie, or just be Halter broke with ‘ground manners’… the 2 yr old kick my moms’ knee out when she tried to give her, her first bath… at one point we had 5 horses on less than an acre (in Oregon) + chickens, dogs, cats.
I broke rank with my mother at 15 and spent the summer @ the Thunderbird Eq Cntr in Canada and rode everything that I could. I also picked up groom and ride time with kevin pole, the solderbergs, and a guy name cyril. When I returned home Mom and I split the sheets – I’d picked up RADICAL ideas on training, and quality of care standards. I sued for my emancipation (was granted it).. and then catch rode my way through college. NOW 20yrs later – i own 1 horse (she’s my love) I board her – and take the best of care of Just her. I live in a Cute condo, and have a strict belief in better geldings – and dont breed it unless you can feed it…. For the rest of it’s Life. My mare has her ROM in reining, WCH, and points in WP. I will breed her at some point – and I’ll cross her to a stallion that compliments her, and her records. (when I’m ready… not just cuz she’s got a uterus)
The site doesn’t work for me…I guess the owner took it down.
Anyway. My eyeballs popped out of my head when I saw this. Everything this person did was just pure stupid. As for the filly, if you cropped the head out of the pic I would have thought it was an emaciated cow. That has to be the fugliest creature I have ever seen.
They also can’t renew their domain registration on time. (The reason I haven’t been here all week? I kept stopping the old site from loading due to being on effing dialup (Hopefully to be fixed within a few weeks) before it transferred me to the new one. Any chance of a post there to redirect people manually, Fugs?
Quiverful? That’s irresponsible breeding too…of HUMANS. And I rather suspect they will learn their lesson when all of their ‘Lord’s children’ turn into teenagers, rebel and become Wiccans or something *smile*
Condos…
Take advantage of this weak market while you can. I have been able to locate several condominiums at 40% to 75% below listing price, one in San Fran and another in Miami. The deals are good! The source I used to locate them is good….
