Horse trader, the difference is that ravage has a sexual connotation – like being violent in a sexual manner. Savage is just being primitively violent.

I believe you’re thinking of “ravish”, not “ravage.” :) Ravage actually is violent destruction. Savage is the more accurate word for the situation of course.

    Sorry, can’t help it. :)

My 1st breyer horse was the qh Leo. I found him on ebay recently. He was $80. I got him for $5 at a garage sale when I was 7.
I renamed him Penny. Spinning on a Copper Penny for his show name. Oh. And I changed him to a mare. Still is, never will change ;)

Ahh the debate of our present language in todays society…
Whilest I agree with most that say its going to hell the way the youth of today speak..
There are simply more importent things in life then condemning someone over a slight grammatical error..

Now I will say their are folks who blatantly have no regard for the english language an speak in such a way that it boggles nearly everyone. Condemn them , but don’t waste time harassing a person over to the simple misuse of to/too/there/their..

Funny thing i’ve noted , a few that have responded to me are HorseShitty members that are bonefied BYB , a good grasp of the english language doesnt make you a good horseowner , an the few i’ve noted don’t even deserve Bryne Shrimp…

Trickroper, “slight” grammatical errors? *eye roll* You’re just making an ass out of yourself with your ridiculous comments trying to defend poor grammar/spelling and sound like you’re too cool for school. Give us a break and lay off.

Im not defending poor grammar , I cannot stand poor grammar.
But misusing to / too / their / an there is not all that big of a deal..
I can understand the point of this Blog , but cutting a person down for the misuse of a few words is pointless.

zephyrsmom & charlescitycat – Thanks for asking, she’s holding her own. She is skinny enough that I if I lived in an area with a diligent ASPCA, I’d be awaiting a visit. Luckily, I’d have two vets to attest to the fact that I AM taking care of her. She’s rather dull & disconnected, but she’s not unhappy, is walking fairly well and still has a very good appetite. She’s not getting worse, but she’s not getting much better. She’s certainly not to the point of needing to be put down, but it’s all too easy to see that point may not be very far away.

Regarding grammatical / spelling errors. I can easily forgive an occasional mistake by someone who generally types well, and probably just let the fingers out-type the brain. (Really, who out there hasn’t typed their own last name when you’re not thinking and a word starts with the same first few letters?) I find it really difficult to take seriously anything presented by someone who routinely makes mistakes with words such as their, there, they’re, your, you’re, too, to. It is the same to me as if I were listening to a speech given by someone who is slovenly – I would have a hard time being impressed, regardless of the content. If English is your first language, you have a responsibility to actually use it properly in a conversation – even if the conversation is written. If it’s not your first language, then obviously I would be a lot more forgiving – especially as it’s one of the more difficult languages, due to some wacky rules and spellings.

(I think the biggest problem I have in typing is going back and changing a word and then forgetting to make sure I haven’t thrown all my tenses off.)

and, as I was previewing this, I saw TRD’s post – I’m not going to cut anyone down too much on grammatical errors, unless you are my child – in which case I am a rabid defender of proper grammar & spelling!

4Horses: Glad to hear your mare is at least holding her own, keeping my fingers crossed for her recovery.

Also, agree with your views on proper spelling and grammar.

It is important to try to be correct but there are people who, no matter how intelligent and/or educated, just are not good spellers. There is a difference between someone who is just plain ignorant/stupid and someone who just isn’t a good speller.

Horse Trader From Hell: Sorry, didn’t see your first post with your blog address on it. Came in when you kept apologizing for not being a good speller and asking for everyone to leave it alone and not flame you for it. Seemed like you had something important you wanted to say but you just kept apologizing about your spelling. Pet peeve of mine. Personally, I can forgive a few spelling errors, typos or mild grammatical mistakes in this type of forum. There have been far worse than you.

After I realized my faux pas, I did go and read your blog. Definitely too rabid, but point well taken.

trickroperdeluxe: from HTFH’s blog, in certain instances, swear words provide a much greater impact than regular ones do. So, yes you can swear with finesse.

I can forgive some grammatical/spelling errors too (I make them occasionally when I get in a hurry or upset), but I’m less likely to forgive them when they are constant, numerous and such simple ones to avoid, not to mention when the offender(s) gets insulting about defending the use of such poor grammar/spelling.

One little rant. I think that text messaging is a horrible thing for proper spelling. How many young people who are in situations where the parents aren’t good spellers are learning to spell phonetically and not correctly. Do high school teachers still mark off for spelling and sentence structure for classes other than English or language? I can not look at the local teens in my area and think that they do.

I KNOW that there are wonderful teachers out there, but even in our elementary school many of the teachers routinely use the word “ain’t” (which I H-A-T-E!) and also use double negatives. Sure, it’s the area (kind of red-necky) but PLEASE, you are teaching children! It’s pretty bad when I want to take a red marker to most of the notes that are sent home and send them back to the school corrected.

There was a news bite a few years ago for a local college, and the college-graduate woman featured said (I have to spell phonetically here to get the point across) something along the lines of “learn the correct pro-noun-sation of words.” ~~~ HUGE SIGH ~~~

It’s like the majority of society is striving to achieve mediocrity or a lower level, TRYING to dumb themselves down and proud of it. I don’t think anyone ought to be allowed on TV or to become a role model if they can not speak properly. Children watch and learn. It’s shameful.

For your views to be taken seriously you need others to respect you.

You ‘command’ respect. You do not ‘request’ it.

For others to respect you you need to come across as sane and intelligent. If you make the occasional spelling/grammatical error no one cares. But if you constantly do people assume you can’t be bothered or don’t know the difference.

If someone points out your errors and kindly tries to correct you but you won’t learn I assume you can’t or can’t be bothered.

Either way you will come across as unintelligent.

Must share one of my proudest moments: On Christmas day my nephew told my 6yo daughter Georgia that they “buyed” something for Christmas. Kindly Georgia replied “It’s ‘bought’ Kowen.” That’s my girl!

Sure you can be too pedantic about spelling and grammar – and I think some people take themselves too seriously. But you’ll never defend the “Who cares if you can’t spell?” attitude with me. It’s just laziness.

If I manage to make a friend , GREAT , if not then im fine =)

Im not defending myself , im defending a point. YES grammar is importent , YES proper use of the English language is importent. But is there a point in cutting down a person who sometimes doesnt use the proper spelling?

I tutored English Literature for several years, and unfortunately, the experience stayed with me…I have actually sent back a love letter corrected in red pen!

Egregious misuse of the English language by native English speakers drives me into a frothing rage. I am deeply ashamed of how damned pedantic I can be at times, but the itch for the red pen seems to be hardwired at this point. ;)

ROTFLMAO!! Love it! I’m so glad to see I’m not alone in my fanaticism. What I really love *insert sarcasm* is when you read about how someone thinks spelling, grammar, etc. IS important, but isn’t able to express even that with proper English.

Was really talking aboout HTFH actually. He (she?) was the one asking us too listen and go to the other site to read and learn etc. Agree it’s a little different if you are just making a comment.

HTFH excellent work. By taking it on the chin and seeing other ponits of view you have gone up in my estimation. LOL. You now deserve some respect.

The phrase “suffice it to say,” always mangled. One teacher (!) I had, while lecturing, would start sentences with “Sufficient to say…” Drove me crazy! But I was too timid to correct her.

Advise vs. advice… just about no one under 30 can use these words correctly.

…and I think it’s “brine” shrimp, not “Bryne.”

“One of my pet peeves is the phrase, “I could care less.”

I think this one is a result of hearing this spoken rather than written. You need to think this one through, what the phrase means, before you can school yourself to say it correctly.

Current “speak” on the internet has more to do with street cred’ than proper English use. Sad, but understandable.

Too cool for school? I agree, it’s pervasive. That attitude is going to seriously catch up with them. Very bright kids are going to hang themselves with this one as they grow older. Bad idea, guys! Way to shoot yourselves in the foot!

I’m a Casey. I get Kacy, Stacy, Tracy and Cassie. *sigh*
