I’m taking requests today…

With all of the horses in trouble with winter coming and skyrocketing hay prices, I thought now would be a good time to start a thread with horse requests. Are you looking for a horse? Is someone you know looking for a horse? If so, please post exactly what you are looking for and your location and give an e-mail contact address. If you know how to do a HTML mailto link, that will work – otherwise I’m sure everybody knows how to copy and paste.

I also think this will be highly educational regarding the horse market. I bet we are going to see some real patterns here for what you want to buy and can’t find to buy!

So here’s what I need for a friend:

In SoCal or nearby:

Draft cross or big built horse that can carry weight – big bones, solid feet, short coupled.
NO MOTOR. No motor AT ALL. Likes to plod along on trails. Very happy doing that. Extra credit for a nice jog.
Would not take off running if a truck drove by with a cheetah wrapped in a tarp and fighting to get out, capische?
Does not have to be highly educated. Just good basic trail broke with no motor and no soundness/health issues.

The home is the one we all want to sell to…fabulous care, 100% safe, light trail riding only, a decent piece of land for SoCal (you know what that means, but at least the horse won’t live in a 10 x 15 pipe corral all the time), excellent nutrition, excellent farrier. Just can’t find the right horse. If you have it, e-mail me.

OK, what does everybody else need to find? Maybe we can do some matchmaking here!

I’m looking for a very stout or draft cross between 14 and 15.2 hands that wont spook at anything or at least will spook in place.

That is my horse! I love her! She is a Hog Creek Mustang, has a bit of draft in her and, while not beautiful, is smooth as glass. Best trail horse ever! Good luck in your search.

I am offering the following horse for sale – regretfully must sell due to family medical crisis.

11 year, 16.2 hand, chestnut, registered OLDENBURG gelding by Alternativ.

Sensible, easy and uncomplicated mount with three correct gaits… well, his canter is outstanding.

Shown last fall and this summer by an absolute beginner rider at Intro level, and by a slightly more experienced rider at Training (and in her first First level tests), always in the top ribbons. Can easily go first, but needs to rebuild topline and carrying power to put in a good test. (His workload since I purchased him has been light and inconsistent).

Schooling Novice Eventing, was shown in the low Hunters by previous owner. Hacks out, trail rides alone or in company.

UTD on deworming, farrier, dental, coggins and vaccinations. Very happy and comfortable barefoot. On 24/7 turnout now, but stables quietly at shows and clinics.

His biggest vice is that he likes to put things into his mouth when bored… lead lines and reins are favorites. Was quite rude on the ground when I purchased him over 2 years ago, but has learned to be a gentleman. May test boundaries on the ground with new person.

Leads, ties, loads, clips, bathes, etc like the pro that he is.

Ideal mount for a beginner who would like to learn the ropes of Dressage or work over fences, but also has the talent and training to move up the levels. Nothing hot about this fellow, he is reliable and willing, and an easy ride.

Photos can be found on my website http://www.fuelsterfarm.com (along with several other horses for sale, belonging to my clients).

    Asking $9500

Sale is strongly motivated by financial strain put on our family due to major health issues that require us to travel out of state frequently, and at great expense. :(

    FUGLY HORSE WANTED

We’d like to give your sweet but imperfect horse a good new home. Looking for an older dead-broke, quiet, not-zoomy horse for a 60something yr old experienced-but-rusty rider.

Minor soundness issues may be fine, since he may only be ridden a few hours a month for pleasure (easy!).

Older horses are just fine. Mare or gelding is fine. Any color or breed as long as the temperament is CALM and sensible, & no spooks, bucks, bolts, or vices. Ideally stockier horses are better (example: stocky qh, draft, well-built draft X). Not too picky about height but around 15-16hh would be nice.

Weight-gain project, medical layup, or rehab projects are OK.

Immediately upon arrival, he’d get a vet check-up exam, teeth floated, any vaccinations he’s missing, farrier visit, and microchipped.

    Area: northeastern Maryland(MD/DE/PA/south NJ)

I represent a 501c3 adoption/rescue program. This would be a horse for a Board member’s retiree-age mother. She’s been waiting for just the right quiet trail horse, but the well-broke, quiet horses are extremely few and far between in this area. I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask here.

If the horse is donated, you would receive a tax-deductible donation reciept.

Benefit from going through our program: We can promise a forever home for the horse: if he ever can’t stay with his new adoptive home, he must come back to us. Adoption contract & microchip registration. We always take our own horses back without hesitation.

Contact mayleen@gmail.com please. References or farm tour happily provided upon request.

Here is the thing about price. Yes you can find a diamond in the rough, but if you want quality with training you are going to have to pay for it. Most of the horses that come out of my stable that have a show record START at $10,000 and go up from there. Green broke (and by green broke I mean w/t/c and started lightly over fences) are around $5,000
Weanling Hanoverians and Hano crosses START at $4,000
Yes, we do get a few horses that we sell for on the cheaper side but that is usually a freak thing, ie the mare that outsized for ponies for H/Js who would have been a $10,000 pony but is now $3,000 neg just to get her off the feed bill.

A trainer or breeder of quality horses can not afford to sell for the prices that people seem to think they can pick up a horse for on alot of boards.

There is no way that (atleast myself) can afford to let (for example) a coming 5yr TB cross gelding that will mature around 17.1h that has shown Training level dressage schooling 1st level, schooled up to Training level Eventing, and shown some Hunter OFs ,AND can be ridden by children for less then $15,000. (the only reason he did not event this year is do to growth spurts and not wanting to hurt his knees).

Horses that have the ACTUAL potential to win in multiple sports are not going to be found for cheap.

Along with the always wanted pony that will is sound, safe, has a show record, and can cart your beginner child around jumps that people think they will find for CHEAP.

I had a woman that pulled up in a new Lexus to look at some ponies want to only spend $1,500 on a pony for her kids to learn to jump on. I flat out told her that no pony that I have that is dead kid broke is that price and asked her how much her kids safety was worth.

She bought a pony from another trainer for $1,000 and after her kids got hurt trying to learn to jump on him they came and bought a little welsh cross mare that I had for $5,000 and are now having a blast learning how to jump on a pony that will not rush the fences and will never refuse.

Moral of the story: A good horse costs alot, but the money you pay for that horse should also be looked at as an investment in you or your child’s safety

Fugly, if you’re building a database could you include this horse? She needs a new home and a job.
Registered HA mare, 3/4 Arabian, 1/4 ASB. 4 years old, 15+ and growing. Lightly started under saddle, has mostly just been a horse for the past few months. Good w/t/c, lots of go but very responsive and a great whoa. No knee, would be a very nice western/hunt prospect. Wouldn’t be appropriate for a rank beginner, but advanced beginner/intermediate would do well.
Outstanding ground manners, ties, clips, loads. UTD on vaccinations, worming.
Very passive with other horses, bottom of the herd.
I have a short video and photos. If interested, I can be contacted at my gmail account: brideshead2536.

I have a once in a life time pony, 13.2, Dark liver chestnut, permanant card, 1999. She has packed my daughter from Elementary through Novice, schools Training. She is a clever girl! Quite the bold jumper, she schools ditches, water, corners, skinnies, chevrons, full coffins, up and down banks etc all with her 9 year old rider. She has a motor, but is very safe and responsive. She is quite the confidence builder over fences! No vices, trailers, ties, stands for farrier, enjoys being owned by a 9 year old girl and all that goes with it! VERY sadly outgrown, I will be picky about her next home. She would also do well in the jumpers. She is refered to by my Olympic level trainer as “the Wonder Pony”. She is a rare find and is priced accordingly. Videos and pics available. takanhorse at comcast dot net

Is anyone in or near New Mexico?!

    Some horses for sale:

Very fancy TB gelding, unraced, coming 7, 16.2 h, big boned, elegant topline, looks/moves like a WB. Excellent mover, extended trot to die for, very comfortable ride. W/T/C quietly under saddle. I am a Hunter/Jumper person and this guy really wants to be a Dressage horse! $8,000

Flashy chestnut QH/APHA type (no papers) gelding, 4 high white stockings, bald face, 15.1h, 11yo. As kid/husband safe as they come and extremely cute and sweet! Currently used as a beginner lesson horse. Bombproof on trails, in arena, or over small jumps – would be ideal horse for timid/elderly rider. Goes English or Western $3,500

7yo OTTB, sensible and sane but needs experienced rider to further his training. Would be an excellent low-level eventer or jumper – great project for experienced teen, adult, or pro. Sweet, loving personality, very easy keeper, 100% sound. Owner’s health forces sale. $2,000 or best offer.

Email gfarmsf at yahoo dot com for more info…

And FWIW, I am not looking to buy any horses right now, but never pass up big, older, well broke, cheap horses that just need a little TLC (ie groceries, dental and deworming) for resale or use in a lesson program.

Oh, forgot to mention, the OTTB mentioned above is 16h.

    And one more horse:
Older TB gelding (20+). True 17h, can comfortably carry large rider. Quiet, sound, and broke to death. W/T/C, jumps crossrails. Allergic to shavings, happy living outside with a shelter. Will only consider sale to a forever home and with a signed contract that he will be returned to me if you don’t want him any more. Did I mention he is BIG, quiet, and BROKE? Sounds like he fits the bill for what a lot of you are looking for. A bargain at $2,500 firm.

I’ve got an 11 year old Haflinger gelding for sale, trained to ride english, western and drive a cart. He was shown under cart before I got him, and had been taken to playdays by the lady I got him from. He jumps 3’6” and I was told he was ready to move up in height. He is 14 hands, very well trained, not too spooky, his main beef is the motion sensor sprinkler we have. He was sold to me as beginner safe, and he was used as a lesson horse for kids. He does trails too. He is great for the farrier, trims, ties, loads, bathes. He also stands dead still while being tacked up and mounted. Not cinchy at all, he stood still while I had about 15 saddles slapped on his back to find one that fit him and that I liked in my price range. He neck reins in a curb bit, does well at shows. My reason for selling is, I have adopted a rescue horse that I have spent months socializing, brushing, teaching to pick up feet, lead and tie. He is just now back up to weight and is making progress, but he and my gelding have conflicting personalities, and I do not feel my gelding matches me well. I will never sell my rescue baby, just turned 2, I signed a contract, but not only that I made a promise to the sick little guy that I’d always take care of him.
I feel that Wadsworth HFB, my Haflinger would make a great 11-12 year olds english mount, especially if they want to jump, or have a cute as a button pony that’ll make all the other little kids jealous. E-mail at kataginobaka@gmail.com for pictures and questions.

I am looking for a young (yearling or younger) Clyde, preferably with a lot of sabino or roan. Please add me to the list, and given a choice, I’d like to offer a home to an horse of this type that might otherwise go to auction. I know a lot of the heavy roans or not “perfectly marked” Clydesdales are “throwaways” so add me to the list of folks willing to take one.

Drat, it might help if I add where I’m located, though I might be willing to travel quite a bit for my horse. I live in the St. Paul/Minneapolis, Minnesota area.
