There are simply no words…

Before I address our topic of today, a $58,000 sterile Gypsy Vanner stallion, I want to point out that I have purchased a small horse farm on 5 acres with a house for $67,000 and, while it was not exactly Southfork, it was a hell of a lot better use of that kind of money that this critter would be to anyone. Seriously, if you are dumb enough to fall for this and have this kind of cash to spend, come sit next to me. OK, I’m kidding, but at least I’d spend it rescuing sweet old Thoroughbred mares and that would at least be useful.

Text of the ad: “Arkan was purchased from Black Forest Shires and Gypsy Horses. Arkan is Sterile and son of Lion King. He has never settled a mare and no proof exists of his fertility. The price is negotiable and includes loss of income from 4 gypsy mares that he was unable to breed. “

Um, sir? First of all, this sounds like a you have a lawsuit with Black Forest Shires and Gypsy Horses. Why would you think you should pass that expense on to a potential buyer? Loss of use, are you on crack?

Second, did you not get the memo about how people in the horse business typically lose money? Especially when they pay too much money for a stallion without bothering to fertility test him. Not that I think the Earth needs to be populated with shaggy legged colored cobs, but if I were going to pay some ri-fucking-diculous amount of money for one, I would damn well make sure he wasn’t sterile first. Did you find out if he had foals on the ground or you just merrily signed a ginormous check because he was REALLY hairy and that’s just nifty?

But hey, forget trying to go after the seller (other than talking smack about them on Equinehits: memo to you, No One Cares), let’s just try to get someone buy the world’s most overpriced gelding.

(Has anyone here read this Cali Canberra novel “Trading Paper?” I just started it and it’s a thinly disguised account of the sale of NH Love Potion in the 1980s Arabian world. Was that really the story, some dumb rich guy who got bamboozled into signing a contract for $2.4 million for a mare? I’m sure we have some Arabian insiders here, fill me in. Although really that should be another post because I heard how that mare ended up and it pisses me off big-time. I met that mare, by the way. She licked my hand when I was 15. Your trivia for the day.)

not whining, just warning. I would rather have a perosn with morals give me a heads up to someone/something so I can go into the situation guarded. It’s a shame people like lifelike001 have to refer to being nasty, that’s nothing but an unhappy person. May God bless you and be with you lifelike001. bubba,
Why on earth would you want to import that grey stallion?? There is absolutely nothing to like about him. He’d be worth zilch in the UK and I don’t know anyone in their right mind that would want to breed from him.
He is also grey – surely if you are wanting to breed pattern you would try and avoid the greying gene. It causes pattern to fade and eventually your patterned foals turn into grey/white adults.
Seriously, he needs left in Ireland, gelded and allowed to do some ploughing. Whoever has talked you into buying him must have kissed the Blarney Stone.
If you want a grey heavy sort look on British sites for Highland Ponies. You will find many stallions that are grey and sturdy and oozing quality, then you can see that your boy is grey and sturdy and devoid of quality.

    In fact – try this

this is a stallion. Same as yours, grey and sturdy but on a different planet when it comes to quality. This boy can do a job, move, carry a rider and has the conformation to remain sound for a long, long time. Surely you can see the difference.

If Arkan’s new owner wants to prove false advertising, he may also consider going through legal channels to have the foals BFS is claiming were sired by Arkan to be bloodtped and DNAd. If the foals do not bloodtype/DNA to Arkan as sire, it would provide definitivel that the ad is deceptive. UC-Davis can do this efficiently.

There are many factors involved in fertility, but the above can be used if all other avenues have been checked out.

And while we are talking about enourmous amounts of money for young stallions . . . Arabian stallion QR Marc just sold for $4 million ($4,000,000 !) overseas. He is 2 years old and had breedings sold as a WEANLING. This year, he bred 80 mares – as a 2-yr-old. He won a yearling colt/gelding in-hand class of 14 entries at a regional show, and was reserve champ. at US Nationals in the yearling colt/gelding sweepstakes, a class of 30 entries. The owner sold him overseas and has nearly 100 breedings they committed to for next year’s season. He is a gorgeous colt, but I can’t imagine that kind of money changing hands for a horse – granted he has proven his fertility (:

The GH stallion, Rom Baro, owned by the CO farm, was not always sterile. He became sterile after a kidney infection that led to a very high temperature. He is now gelded. I know it was kept hush-hush. This explains why he has offspring on the ground, but for the last year that they stood him, he was unable to settle a mare. No, we didn’t breed to him; he wasn’t my cup of tea. Also, this particular breeder has, allegedly, sold numerous sterile stallions, as well as unhealthy horses in general, and numerous lawsuits have taken place, with most ending in a monetary settlement in favor of the plaintiff. (There are currently two other alleged sterile stallions that were sold in the last few months) Even a relative of theirs who works in their barn has warned potential buyers that they are being had! So the CO breeder does have a shady reputation to most involved with the Gypsy breed directly. It’s the newbies that get taken.

As far as the comment by someone that this is a breed predisposed to certain health issues…we own many. We have never had an issue that was mentioned, with any, in over 7 years of owning these two breeds! In fact they are rather hardy, very healthy and often too easy of a keeper. Most of these horses are overweight! The ones that should be foundering and having health issues, haven’t yet!

It’s not a breed for everyone, but we enjoy owning, breeding and showing them. There is no “serious” money to be made; it’s a hobby business.

    here’s an idea…
let’s tell everyone he’s sterile and keep him a stallion so he’s an asshole but not able to be bred. THEN let’s ans an idiotic amount of money for him.

Geld his ass and train him!
