OK, I know one of you has this information

How do I get in touch with a horse dealer named Oly Olson out of Washington state?

We were at the auction yesterday (yeah, we know better than to go to sales but that doesn’t stop us) ostensible to buy tack (yeah, sure) and this guy got a 16.2 chestnut TB mare named Futlooseandfancyfree who is waywayway too nice to can. I mean, this mare passes the FHOTD “mare that is actually breeding quality” test. Multiple race winner, tall, big boned, great feet, super deep through chest, quiet, kind and allegedly trail rides and everything. A little short crouped/tail set on high but overall a super nice mare. He got her for $200 and of course wanted $350 for her 10 minutes later. We had a whopping $190 on us (due to our avowed intention to buy only tack).

However, since yesterday, I found someone who knows this mare’s former owner and thinks they will help save her. Now I just need to get them in touch with this guy. I know half the horse world reads this blog, even if only 1% of it admits to it ;-) so surely one of you has a contact # for this guy?

I have the schedule from Hell this week and am busy with my training horse after work (who canters now, and is trotting ground poles, hooray!) so I apologize for the lack of a real entry. I’ll try to get one up tomorrow night, but in the meantime…find that dealer, we have GOT to save this nice mare!

PLEASE< PLEASE spread this information to everyone and anyone that you can, whatever country you are in.
The more “foreigners” that contact them (Princess Alia of Jordan has already done so) the more worried they will get, and, hopefully they will do something.
On the thread is a link to U-Tube showing a day in their life- they are lying down to die.
This is happening , people, they have been left among garbage by a man who can afford to feed them, God alone knows what is going on in his mind.
He has money, he accepts subsidies form the government for his land and the horses have no water and NO food.
Two are down and cannot get up.
    This is an Emergency.
Sorry Fugs, I just needed to get this out a bit further.
The Sheriff is part of the “old boy” network and is telling everyone all is fine.
BULLSHIT (OK that’s a first I have sworn on the Internet!!!!)
They are backing this monster in order to cover their own backs so they are not blamed for dropping the ball.
PLEASE if you can afford to, phone the offices and tell them you know the truth.
There is money and homes available to help these animals- they are only waiting for permission to take them.
I watched the slaughter video with only sadness.
I watched the video of these Minis are I cried.
The money is there, the homes are lined up, the trailers are ready to roll.
The bastard will not let them go.

Start with the sale barn . . . they should have “buyer Information” on Oly.

Then it’s phone calls, leg work and good fortune!

I think if she is as nice as you say – he won’t be putting her on a truck anytime soon. If he can put 30 days under saddle on her he can sell her for far more than ‘canner’ prices.

Hope you can get the TB mare…she’s well-bred, too (from the same female family as the great SW and sire, Sailor).

The JC shows the name as Futloosanfancyfree, no “d” in it. It would have been over the character limit otherwise. She’s also on pedigree query. So-so pedigree. By the Canadian 0Bold Ruckus son Katahaula County out of an Imp Society mare. She herself did have some wins at Turf Paradise. Best of luck!

Also, unless you know the name was spelled Olson it could also be Olsen, proper first name possibly Olaf or Ole, or maybe even Oliver?

I just had to mention this:

This is a public forum. I found the same info on Oly as a few of you did. I emailed it to the person looking for him. I did not put it on this board because it is a public board. If the listing is not for the person she is looking for but another person with the same name then it would be an invasion of privacy to post it here. There are a few readers of this blog that might take it into their own hands to pester this guy. If the info is wrong then they would be pestering the wrong person.

Please be considerate of other people.

    jenn,

How is that pedigree from a staying/sport perspective rather than a sprinting perspective? A good mare is defined rather differently in the event world, for example, and if she is as good as FHOTD says, she’d likely be quite valuable there as a broodmare.

(And yes, I am sure a lot of people just won’t breed right now, but the eventing world is adjusting to the new short format events and finding that they need to change their breeding formulas. Well-conformed TB mares with plenty of bone are valuable to cross with WB stallions.)

  22. Jenn says:

    Ann,

I couldn’t adequately answer your question, seeing as I only am highly familiar with racing TBs and based my response on that. However, I hoped to be of some help by putting the correct name of the horse out there. I have though taken it a step further and pulled her race record, and she only ran as a 3 year old (2004) with 7 starts, 3 wins and a second, for a total of $21,435. One start on the turf to no avail.

    Her Dosage Profile: 5 2 6 0 1 Dosage Index: 2.50 Center of Distribution: +0.71

So bred to be a sprinter (heavier on the left) with a decent middle distance (the 6), not an abundance of stamina but that 6 is sitting dead center so she should have some staying ability.

However, as you say, a nicely put together horse is a nicely put together horse so racing breeding should be moot for a sporthorse.

Oh, and she must have been somewhere for the last 3 years, but it wasn’t racing and I didn’t find (TB) progeny.

Still hope the mare is found. Best wishes!

Well, both numbers were busy when I called and the faxes were too. Probably they left them off the hook. You tell us these horses are dying, and I believe you. Obviously the longer they are in that situation, the closer all will be to death. The ‘law’ isn’t listening. I contacted PETA’s emergency line, I wouldn’t normally do such a thing since I don’t agree with a lot of their stances, but they do have power.

Sorry, but if I were there, maybe I wouldn’t load up the trailers, but you’d sure as hell see me tossing some hay over the fence and filling up those water troughs instead of taking pictures of how empty they are.

Back to Oly Olson… or however his name is spelled, if that’s his real first name.

He may not be a Washingtonian. I heard he’s a dealer and from out of state. That would make Oregon, Idaho, or BC a possibility. Maybe even Montana.

Maybe people from Idaho and Oregon can start checking local auction houses in their area and see if they know him.

If he’s going to come from out of state to hit the Enumclaw auction, chances are he’s hitting other ones locally, and they’ve heard of him.

This is a bit off topic but I was wondering how the newbies who got the mare were doing with her?

That was me, Kay. So far so good. I am waiting for the other (horse)shoe to drop with this little mare. She’s just an all-around perfect horse for beginners.
My friends are still taking it slowly, heeded my advice on getting a properly fitting saddle, and a nice saddle pad to help with her slight sway back (it’s really not that swayed but accentuated by high-ish withers!)
The Mom used the gift certificate I gave her, and I let the daughter-in-law use my horse, and they took a riding lesson together.
They then purchased a gift certificate for a lesson (with the same instructor) at a fund-raising auction my riding club had, and now the son is going to use that lesson.
They are working on ground things mostly, learning how to pick up feet (that’s one thing she has tried, to pull a back foot away, but nothing serious).
Son is reading Chris Irwin’s “Horses Don’t Lie” and also purchased Mark Rashid’s “Considering the Horse” – both loosely NH but without all the foolish gear and fluff – basic common sense stuff. No gimmicks and stupid pet tricks….
They call and check in with me about just about everything, feed, grooming, supplies, etc.

One unforeseen problem that has come up, and something I cannot do anything about, is inter-family bickering. Nagging each other about care and handling. One horse, three people – this is not a good thing…. I try to stay out of that part as best as I can! But I do explain to the “youngsters” (son and daughter-in-law are in probably in their late 20′s, mom is mid 40′s, my age) that we older people are a bit more cautious and a little less flexible than people half our age…. Mom is more hesitant and less confident than the “kids.” I don’t blame her. With age comes wisdom – and the knowledge that we fall a little harder and take a little longer to dust off our Wranglers….

They want me to take the little mare out on the trail and she what happens. I will agree to that. If we ever find something that is this horse’s “boogie man” I’d rather I was on her, rather than one of them. So I might take her this weekend on a short trail ride and see what, if anything, bothers her. Then they will start hacking around their pasture….

Photos of the “Before” and During then After are NECESSARY for rescuing. There isn’t a problem with a preson giving water/feed to starving horse, but photos of those empty buckets are required, and a photo of you, or someone else with you, FILLING said contains is the best way to cover your ass, show the authorities it was you taking care of them, and get those horses out. Be sure that after those photos were taken, water was given to those ponies. I’m all for getting them out in the dark of night and shipping across state lines. Anyone wanna haul some to Ohio? :)

    Kirri regarding the minis:
I’ve seen your pleas here and on WI Horses so you ARE reaching people!

I called the sheriff’s dept, rang – no answer. My approach was going to be “Hello. Yes, I’m calling to get on a list for adopting a starved mini or two from Kansas…yes can you take down my name and number…..oh this isn’t that number, well maybe you can tell me what you’re doing about saving these animals?” Unfortunately, I didn’t get to play with them.

So then I called the judge’s number and a nice (but impatient) woman talked to me. She referred me to the sheriffs number, I said they aren’t answering the line. She said she doesn’t know how many lines they have over there maybe the lines are busy – I said no, rang no answer. I asked if she could tell me the status of the animals. She said no the sheriff is handling the “investigation”. I said but if the sheriff isn’t doing anything or answering the phone is there anyone else that can answer the public’s questions about the animals welfare? She reluctantly gave me the atty generals office number and said they are the only ones that are over the sheriffs office.

If you want to make some noise for the minis in Kansas please call the atty general’s office and ask for a status and action plan. These animals can not outlive an investigation. At the very least, cease the sick and downed ones! Get a court action to have a vet on premises for evaulation.

Let’s do it right. Ya still gotta have a health cert & coggins drawn before going out of state. They do have a 24 hour test, but I think the norm is 72.

Some states a coggins is good for only 6 months while a couple other states used to honor them for up to 2 years. (Yeah like they will never contract ANYTHING over that length of time.)

If he didn’t feed them, chances are that none of them got vaccinations either. I would want at least an isolation area for them if they were coming into our place.

No telling what they are carrying, and I am not just talking babies.

“The Paint Horse Journal is planning an article series on solid Paint-bred issues for 2008, and we want to know what you think about the value and perception of solid Paints.”

Now is the time to make your voice heard (again lol).

    Editor,

Check through every other post here. Yes, we put names up. Yes, the people get “pestered.” If they didn’t pull this crap, we wouldn’t have any reason to let them know what other horse people are thinking. Where the information is posted or found originally is also a public forum. Let him be pestered, if it means finding the mare. What was FHOTD supposed to do – email each of us to keep his name private? By us posting his number here, we are sre FHOTD sees the info. What about all the other names, numbers, and emails posted regarding the Kansas minis and other horses? The merry band of fuglies you are among here have had an impact by writing and calling many of the folks who are posted. Most of the time, the Fugly band is quite nice about informing people about changes they may want to make, for the health and safety of their horse or themselves.
I once contacted a person whose information was posted on this forum in the same manner. Not a person who had much respect for horses. I am now alerted by him whenever he has info on horses needing “rescue” from the meat buyers at several local sales. One person I contacted is now in regular contact with me for help and advice in caring for her mare and new foal. I drove to her place (3 hour drive) to do what I could to help.
I understand your concern, but posting the phone number of folks is the least concern the people being discussed here should have.

morab76, the issue is that the contact info for multiple Oly Olsons was posted. They can’t *all* be the one dear Fuggsy is looking for, and it’s not all that cool to post contact info for innocent folks who happen to have the same name, opening them up to harrassment (not everyone on here is an angel or particularly sane ;) ) from folks who may have missed something.

  44. Tash says:

I believe that Oly ships directly from the sale. He has in the past turned down people when he figured they were rescuer types, so it is important to make it obvious that you want the horse for non-rescue purposes. The auctioneer also sells to slaughter, but you can buy the horses from him for $100 more then whatever he paid after the sale. One key thing is to site on one of the sides of the auction… try to get the side opposite of Oly. He makes hand signals and nods to the auctioneer so usually you can tell how much he is going to buy the horse for. If the bidding drops down to his amount Ron just sells him to Oly without any more bidding.

The law does not care WHO is feeding the animals, only that they are getting fed. SO the more people feed them the more it will delay the investigation because they’ll go out and see food and water and say, Hey we can’t do anything!

SOOOOO… go after dark (or near dark) and ONLY put out enough food and water for one night! Then go back the next night. And only put out enough to keep them going until they can be seized. Otherwise they will start to improve (esp. minis) and they won’t take them!!!

That is EXACTLY what happened. We were going to bid and then POOF the mare was sold. !*$$!&!$&

I e-mailed the auction and have the # and the person who knows the previous owner will call the auction tomorrow for contact info. The previous owner WILL buy the mare back if we can get our hands on her. Morab76, he said he had 2 mares and a gelding where? Do you know? I am hoping she has not left the state.

The other mare, if it’s the one I think, is just darling too. 15.3 brown, great neck, very sweet. Also went for $200.

The gelding, again if it’s the one I think, is an ex-h.j. big gray gelding that clearly was sore everywhere. :( Although the saddle sitting RIGHT on his withers didn’t help him any.

    Re the starving Minis.
There are homes available for just about all of them.
Fox News (4) has covered the story everyone who is even vaguely connected has been contacted- they keep sending us back to the local Sheriff who has some of these horses registered in his name!!!
So, well, of course he is going to be impartial.
The owner will not give them up- he was shown on the news with horses so skinny I would be ashamed to own them, fondling their manes and saying he just loved them more than life.
That’s true enough but it is THEIR lives he loves them more than.
I have dealt with cruelty and starvation before I have never seen it in this scale- he has 125 horses registered in his name and he stopped registering in 2000- he did NOT stop breeding in 2000!!!!!!
Just dumping hay in there would most likely kill more than a few- they now need specialised care- they are THAT bad.
He appears to be feeding them some grain- I believe someone is getting water to them but it is not the owner- apparently because he is a few years older than me, he is a “senior citizen” and should be cut some slack.
He is living in subsidised housing (wish I was!!).
He is taking government subsidies of around $100,000.00 a year for the land he owns.
He is starving the horses to death out of….what??
    Stupidity??
Lack of any human feeling whatsoever???
    Despair??
Time and ti9me again people have offered to take all the horses but he will not let them go.
He is, of course, now scared of prosecution if their condition is seen.
There are trailers ready to roll, people who will care for them, Vets who will get them papers, BUT the Sheriff will do nothing and the owner will not sign them over.
OK what can YOU suggest that has not already been done??
At the moment the people involved are baulking at downright horse theft, although I do think cutting all the fences and just turning them loose would be a good option- bit like Belsen- once people actually SEE the conditions they might do something about it but whilst it is all happening a few miles down the road and out of sight they can ignore it.
    Any and all suggestions welcome.

Hope you get the mare Fugs.

Kirri, I have been working on this since day one, and none of my research showed that any horses were registered in the Sheriff’s name (I searched, double searched, had other people search in other registries). Could you please link me to where you found this information? I know several people who will want to hear about this if it can be verified.

Protest march in front of the property? Notify media, get anyone who can to show up…but make sure you aren’t violating any laws by doing so. May even need a permit, and have a talk with highway department about parking too.

Take stills off the video, print out and put on placards/signs and just keep making a quiet statement about the situation…?

I have just tried to find the post and it is gone or changed so it would appear I am mistaken, for which I apologize.
We have considered the protest march thing but I am not sure it will work- the people around those parts HAVE to know what is going on, surely??
If only by word of mouth.
I know how quickly this sort of news spreads.
Again, apologies for misleading- it would appear now that the Sheriff does NOT have horses registered in his name.

Thank you for the clarification, Kirri. There is so much information and speculation flying about I was hoping perhaps you’d found some info I had not found. That would have gone a long way towards getting someone in power to step in if the sheriff had that serious a conflict of interest in this case.

I’m not sure how well a protest would do unless we could get massive media coverage, anyway. This town has a population of under 300 from what I recall. I would imagine most of them have already heard what is going on and are either already involved or just don’t care (I know in my under 500 population small town that is how it would be). A protest at the county seat might have some effect, since that is where the Sheriffs Office is located, but again this is a rural area. The population is not large. The media would have to be present for it to really make much difference.

Re: mini’s: I have saved more abused horses than I can count. There’s only one way to do it: going after the jerk owner won’t work and only get you into trouble. The law’s only reaction is no reaction, so that won’t work. USE THE MEDIA. Find a local and national broadcaster and journalist who will report this story on the news hour. Nothing works better than getting the jerks ostracized in their own communities. I also agree with BluBug: throw water and food, not cameras right now. Their survival depends on swift, useful action. I would join in but it’s a long drive from Vancouver. Keep moving forward. I’ll call and do what I can from here.

PLEASE do not think things are being taken care of because people are doing their best.
This is far, far from being resolved.
Two of the horses are down, but the Sheriff is denying it- he is denying everything.
These horses are in a desperate state and no-one has actually got help to them yet.
Just keep up the pressure until we know for sure it is OK- and even then, if you can afford a few dollars or could donate an item for auction go to

and go onto the auction and help out.
Every tiny bit will count, believe me.
Spread this as far as you can- any other Forums you are on, please post links.
    Thank you.

I have no idea, sure wish I could help but I am way too far away to offer much than moral support :(

Poor little ones…I wonder how many carcasses are there?

Sorry, chemo took me away for a bit. One mare is out of state now. I will get in touch with him about the one mare you have someone lined up to take. Let us know if you have any luck.

Animal Planet is listed under Discovery Channel.

Anyone who gets close to those minis, take photos and video – post it everywhere! Send video tape to news stations. If an article needs to be written, or editorial, I can do it. I will look that up tonight when I get home.

Re: Kansas minis: I just got a call back from someone in the atty general office in Kansas. I told the lady that there are 75-125 minis in Bourbon County that are being starved and the sheriff is slow to move. She did not know about this issue, she took the farm name and said she will look into it and call me back.

I got this response from the Kansas Horse Council:

Thanks for contacting us regarding the mini’s in Uniontown. Following is the current information I have from speaking personally with the officials involved.

This is an update regarding Vern Trembly’s miniature horses in Uniontown, KS. Today I spoke with George Teagarten of the Kansas Animal Health Dept. He has no authority in cruelty cases and so his state vet for that area cannot go see these horses. It would make sense for them to be the agency to handle this but right now the law prohibits them from being involved in cruelty cases. He said that Dr. Ulonda Gray from Ft. Scott looked at the horses last week and said some of the horses need immediate attention. I’ve just gotten off the phone with her and she said when she went out there there were some concerns that needed to be addressed but she didn’t see any horses that were down and couldn’t get up, no gaping wounds, etc. They are on 80 acres with just 2 small areas of grass and she says they have plenty of water. She gave him a plan for deworming and told him how much hay each horse needed to be getting. After that, it is up to Sheriff Coleman to make sure Mr. Trembly follows through with her directions.

Sheriff Coleman took my call and agrees personally that some of the horses need to be removed. He and his deputy went out this a.m. to check on them again and said none of the horses are down (which some of the e-mails said). He told me more than once that it would be resolved on Friday but wouldn’t say how or why. He did say another vet was coming this week for a 2nd opinion and Dr. Gray said they were coming from K-State on Tuesday but didn’t know if they had or not. Maybe that’s what’s happening Friday

I’ll keep you posted as I learn more actual facts.

K-State have not been contacted about this- someone has asked them.
There is video of the down horses- what do they think they are doing- sunbathing??
Dr Gray is a PETVET she doe snot do large animals she has a cat and dog clinic (not to denigrate them, my dog and cat vet will not do horses as one stepped on her foot in Vet School!!)
It is feared they are going to try to move all the horses- some will not survive this, like as not.
You can go onto Lil Beginnings and judge the condition of the horses for yourselves, this bastard is standing there among his “babies”- what is he, stupid or blind??
They are so thin you can see every rib- the look in their eyes is unbelievable- these horses have just given up, they have nothing to eat, nothing to drink, no shade, nothing to lie on- how they are not dead I do not know.
What are we doing to these creatures that they can only stand there and hope that today is the day that they get something to eat?????

The pathetic explanation that it’s a deworming issue is ridiculous. Those poor things didn’t get that way overnight. It’s a neglect issue and they need to be seized immediately. They are living in a shithole full of dangerous junk and broke down equipment. What the Hell is wrong with people? It’s plain as the noses on their damn faces. I don’t care what kind of vet looked at them, a vet has to know they are starving and in a bad environment. I’m not a vet and I can see it. I don’t get it and it really pisses me off.

Update on the Kansas Mini horses: As of now the DA has accepted charges being filed against Mr. trembly and 10 of the horses have been surrendered to SWER and will be fostered by CMHR. I would like to personally thank everyone who has made calls, sent emails, or even just spared a moment to say a prayer.

10 down, 90 +/- to go. This has taken weeks of work and effort but progress is being made. Let’s just hope the momentum holds up and all of these horses find good homes and get the care they need.

Congratulations! I’m happy it’s working out for those little guys. I hope that the new homes are screened very well for “horse knowledge” – I’d hate to think that these minis end up going to people who think they are just like big dogs. Any ideas who (if anyone) will be screening prospective homes?

Hm….. kind of brings to mind another topic here on FHOTD.

The horses will be fostered by homes working with CMHR (Chance’s Miniature Horse Rescue). They will still be under the control of CMHR, as they provide hoof and medical care for the fosters they place in homes and they do keep in contact with the vets used by any foster homes.

CMHR requires foster homes to fill out an application and they DO check references. The animals will not be placed up for adoption until they are healthy and CMHR does check out prospective homes carefully (at least judging from everything I have seen in the last 3 years or so that I have been following them).

I do not work for CMHR but I have followed their work very closely over the last few years. Colts and stallions are always gelded before placement, mares are placed with a no breeding clause, etc. I firmly believe this little horses will be placed with caution and care and will be MUCH better off than they are currently.

So horrible I’m speechless… fugly as hell, and, you guessed it, still a stallion… but look! you can buy the whole family for the super low price of $2500! (the stud, one of his colts, and the colt’s dam) Not to mention, these people are candidates for parent of the year! They’ve got a photo up featuring what looks like a couple month old baby sitting on the stallion while he grazes.

PLEASE do not drop the pressure on the Mini Horses in Kansas, the situation is far, FAR from being resolved.
The good ol’ boy that owns them is starting to get some sympathy- not from me!!!- and he may be allowed to keep the majority of the horses or, worse still, be given donations (that will not last) to help him feed them.
He HAS money he is just not willing to spend it on the horses as he has never had to up until now.
The horses have NO shelter and winter is coming on- they are all in together- he is still breeding them there is a mare about to foal and one with a foal at her side (that one was surrendered. ) He says that he has been breeding 50 years- RUBBISH the Miniature horse is not 50 years old as a breed!!
He is living in a world of his own and horses have not place in it.
    Keep up the pressure, PLEASE!!!

for me too: Oly Olson Elko, Nv and Berdell Olsen out of Utah. Not brothers but friends & associates. I hauled for both of them for several years & consider both to be good friends and the most honest horse traders I’ve ever dealt with & I’ve dealt with most of them in the western US. I don’t read this post often but I think I saw where the host said it’s not the buyers who are at fault they are just the garbage man. I’m especially tired of these people who drop a horse off at the auction then claim they had no idea it would end up on the kill truck. I can’t believe anyone is that naive so its easier to say one thing then do the other. Since the texas plants closed & the Ill. plant is on again off again we have seen a dramatic decrease (at least 50%) in horse values across the board here in the dakotas, the exception being the good solid broke performance horses with some skills. It will be interesting to see how it sorts itself out. None of these horse traders were killing good horse, before the plants closed the bad ones were going to slaughter and any that showed promise were getting skimmed off for clean-up and more riding and another chance. There was more money in that than the $10 commision from the kill plant. Finally I’m tired of hearing about this brutal ride to slaughter. We used sheep trailers which when you pull the decks and sort the horses according to size provided enough head room & we rarely expierenced any skinned heads. Texas A & M studies proved there were more injurys & stress on the straight deck trailers than on a properly loaded pot. The whole push to straight trailers was another backdoor aproach to make the frieght too expensive by reducing the payload by as much as 1/3 in hopes it would make slaughter unprofitable. The transport of horses to slaughter is THE MOST REGULATED of any animal transportation, you have to fill out a report, identify each horse with a tag, list any pre existing condition, & note time of departure. I can assure you when the inspector looks at them when they are unloaded if everthing is not up to par you will be answering alot of questions, & swearing out statements. If you are determined to be at fault the fines are $5,000 per animal per offense. I had 6 trucks on the road & we were delivering 4-6 loads per week to the texas plants for several years. In that time we were never fined for any offenses but evetually tired of jumping through all the “hoops” and exited the business in 2005. That was probably more than my 2 cents worth but is based on fact not emotion. I doubt we will ever get the plants reopened in the US but in the meantime I have not heard a realistic alternative so I guess we should be happy with less than 1/2 price for our unwanted horses. Everyone was in an uproar because the Belgians were making so much money now the canadians & the mexicans can make even more because we devaluated this commodity.
