Now we know where they get some of those loony prices from

Check it out – Myhorsevalue.com !

It’s like the Kelley Blue Book of horses!

Except for the fact that you can put your horse in as being 15.8 hands high, and that a horse who is safe for an experienced rider is more valuable than a horse who is safe for an intermediate rider, and a horse who is trained for english riding is always more valuable than a horse who is only trained for western…

But hey, I am positively thrilled to find out that the horse I paid $1000 for is really worth $5,426. Not to mention the $400 horse who is now worth $1075 because she got major brownie points for being a sabeeeeeno. ;-)

Holy shit. My 5 year old greenbroke QH mare who the horse trader probably picked up at auction for $500 is worth over ten grand. I’m in the money.

Umm… wow. I love that a horse’s base color could be “paint” or “pinto”. Good to know that my all-around prospect (who is leaning towards english) is worth $7,000.00 in my area. I would probably price him at about half that, but then again, he’s a paint – those spots are worth everything.

And my mare… she’s apparently worth $12,000… even though I am pretty sure that breeding stocks rarely sell for that much, especially since the highest we ever showed was at the regional level. Oh, that’s right… she’s got a “unique” color. Being a dilute makes her extra special.

    I was shocked when I entered a friend’s very accomplished well-bred well-conformed would-make-a-great-addition-to-anybodys-stable horse and only got 4k.

Shiiiit, now what am I gonna do? Tell her she needs to get a refund?

That site is KOOKED, and you’re RIGHT, that must be EXACTLY where some of these idiots get their pricing.

    Indeed.

The people who made that site must be living in a dream world. Can you imagine how many people are going to call flea-bitten grey or bleached-out colors “unique”?
It told me that my mare was worth about $1,000. Which is about what I had her priced at for the YEAR I spent trying to sell her… and eventually gave her away for free.

They have a ridiculously small amount of breeds on there too. They were missing dozens of breeds, some that are even quite poplular (I didn’t see TWH on there!)

    LMAO!!!!!!
My fricken’ 21+ year old 14.1hh UNREGISTERED Appendix QH pony is supposedly worth $13,547!!!!
I sold him for $1,000, guess I got gyped on that one, huh?

Haha my SOLID PAINT BRED was worth $12K? Yeah right, in what world? Geez! MAYBE $5K, if I am lucky! Don’t get me wrong, he is an awesome horse. But he is S-O-L-I-D!

My gorgeous, loud colored colt with good breeding and willing attitude? $2K. Hmm…. I sure hope that is not right… Seeing as how I figured he is worth more than the SPB.

My halter mare? $7K. Wouldn’t that be nice? I doubt she is worth that much. If she is then her old owners are most likely kicking themselves right now [which is VERY doubtful].

Whoo-Hoo, fantasy land here we come!

That is the stupidest thing that I have ever seen. What a dumbass. Someone should post under “How to make your horse worth more” and say – start by not breeding the fugly thing in the first place.

Dear Geld-the-fugly, sorry to disappoint you. Again, I am trying to catch up with old blogs and have become mired in three days of fun stuff. But, no, no one in legitimate Morgandom wants you to cross a nice registered Morgan with your butterfly-winged fairy Freisian. Woe betide anyone who tries that little scheme. The drumbeat in the Morgan world is, “If you LIKE a kind of horse, BUY that kind of horse (ie Freisian, Paso, saddlebred, sport, etc.)” A Morgan should be unique in any herd, easily spotted (oh dear, not THAT kind of spotted!) by his upheaded conformation which looks as if the neck sits on top of the shoulder with a smooth unbroken curve from poll to withers, by a relatively long underline from elbow to stifle with a shorter back, but sloping shoulder and long hip, high-set tail carried gaily, longer forearm with shorter cannon, etc. Find the Standard at American Morgan Horse Association.

Do all Morgans conform to the standard? No. Do the best ones? Yes. Is there a lunatic fringe of breeders who think anything that’s in the show ring must be a mutant behind-the-barn-half-saddlebred? Yes. Are they right? No!!!!

It is accepted that the highest amount of direct blood back to the original Figure/Justin Morgan Horse is around 10%. One stallion founded the breed and everything from the beginning was an outcross. When Joseph Battelle researched the first registry volumes most horses were allowed in on TYPE alone. Many big breeders had numerous stallions running with herds of mares. Honest mistakes occured, but the gene pool of type was pretty consistent. With bloodtying and then DNA the gene pool was sealed in perpetuity, and if there’s a scoundrel saddlebred back in today’s Morgan pedigree is sure doesn’t bother me. But it bothers some folk, and then a couple of high profile breeders tried messing with the rules (Maxine Snow, Bruce Ekstrom, loooong stories) but they were eventually dealt with by the reigstry and the courts. In the Ekstrom case over 50 papered horses were purged from the registry with attendant lawsuits, and it was ugly for everybody. No system is perfect, but the AMHA has one of the most stringent and resposible registries in the horse world. If you buy a registered Morgan today you can be sure it is of proper bloodlines.

Ja and Kay, I’m still stymied by photobucket. Sorry.

Yeah, well, my 26 year old mare who has a touch of arthritis and is a LEAD MARE personailty (read headstrong, stubborn, whatever you want)is worth $1602!! And though she is priceless to me, there is no way I could sell her for that if I tried! (not that I would)

She was an abuse case that I rehabilitated. I used her for years in 4-H and have used her recently for Medieval reeinactment. She does not have the best conformation, but it has never affected her soundness. She is bold, intelligent, has amazing endurance, a smooth gait, and is amazingly fast. She would probably be considered a “fugly” by most people, but I did breed her so I could have another one like her. I love her so much, and she is old, so now I have a filly just like her. She is a TWH (not registered) and I breed for purpose, not looks. She is the toughest, smartest old bird on the place. Her filly was practically born trained, I have never started a horse that went so easily!

I have one even better but dogs. I client brought in her fugly Yorkie that weighed less then 2 pounds at 7 months old.. can we say liver shunt?? Anyway this fugly dog that was matted and has an overbite like I have never seen … was bought for the bargain basement price of $7500.00!!! I am marketing my dogs waay to little. I only sell my AKC champion sire/dam with all their health testing (parents that is) puppies for $1200-$1500. I need to give her a deal on one of my puppies for only $5000.

On my Morgan soapbox again, dear readers: Okey dokey, I skimmed Dramhorse and oh my dearie me of my, what an assortment! Hard to find a decont conformation shot of any of the Morgans listed. But here’s a random selection with a few remarks to get you started:

    1083412 (okay, middling Morgan)
    1029672 (saddle-type)
1078655 (OLD type, a mite plump!)
1069977 (NEW type, most modern bloodlines)
1061524 (not a bad palomino if you like color)
    1081107 (exudes feminine type)
1055957 (best of the bunch, cute baby, hope his front legs are better than pictured)
    1079548 (typy, long backed)

I didn’t go through all the listings, but these seem to cover the gamut. Again, if you can find a good UVM Morgan you’re generally ahead of the game.

  15. BehindTheBarn says:

It’s simple, really. Price them like one of the (shall remain) anonymous horse sellers of the internet prices them:

1.) Original purchase price of unbroke, hairy cayuse of special coloring and usually unknown or undisclosed parentage: $1500

2.) Clean up said cayuse, take photos of first day free jumping in braids and a snaffle bridle, offer for sale at $12k as a green jumping/dressage/hunter prospect, now magically eligible for AWS registration (but, of course it’s AWS), with threats of “increasing price as training increases”

3.) Increase price throughout the year according to current hay market, because feeding $1500 horses isn’t cheap

4.) Sell cleaned-up cayuse 3 years after purchase (or however long it takes to rein in the next neophyte buyer) at an undisclosed deep discount, but proudly post on the website the horse sold for the highest price advertised

5.) Let the new owner register with the AWS at their own expense

Lather, rinse, repeat. Folks, this is how to make money buying and selling horses.

(Some people don’t need no stinkin’ horse seller’s blue book.)

My BROKE 12year old, 16.3 H, TB Prelim level event horse, who sold for 22K…. horsey blue book said he was worth $3,500?!?!?

My Appy children’s hunter who sold for 17K his price, 2,500?!?

Ok, makes no sense, But I guess if they had good color, and were back yard bred, and good for “experienced riders only” they would be worth a fortune…

I may be outing myself as a freak here, but I’ve seen a couple examples of this cross that I really liked. I sure as hell wouldn’t breed one myself, but if I was looking for a lower level dressage prospect to just kick around on and have fun, I’d go look at one to buy.

Dear dfdesigns, don’t you dare!! What are your Morgan mare’s bloodlines, pray tell? In the interest of shared sarcasm, why don’t you go back to that Suffolk Punch a few blogs back and get yourself a Suff-gan?

Dear Amber, I appreciate what you say that a Morgan-Freisian can make a useful dressage-type horse, but I think most Morgan and Freisian breeders are most interested in preserving and promoting their purebreds. Both breeds are small compared to the larger Q and other stock registries and we gotta keep growing, not shrinking. There are some nice big sport Morgan stallion (WF Zimbabwe comes to mind) where you can get dressage movement and still be registered.

Guess I’m a purist at heart, and if I even decide to go smaller than my full Morgans I’m going to look at excellent Welsh ponies.

Well despite the fact that my wonderfully lined Holsteiner had to be listed as “other” because his breed wasn’t even on the list (but ‘Andalusia Cross’ and ‘Blued Eyed Horse Assoc – Champagne’ made it on the list) it says he is worth $7,500. That’s probably because despite being a semi-retired upper-level dressage horse, he is ancient at 17 years old and he is only a bay. And no one has heard of these “hole-steen-ers-” unless they’re a cow so he loses points there too.

I expect that had he had spots he would be worth triple that. Damn these crazy warmbloods and their worthless bay colorings! I’m getting the hair-dye now! He WILL be a sabino, dammit! And he will like it!

Farmer’s Wife– When I first moved to AZ, someone gave me an OLLLLLD black Morgan Gelding> I absolutely adored him and he was probably one of the best horses I have ever had the joy of being around.

His papers had been lost a long time ago, but he was the most regal horse I had ever seen. Occasionally, I run across Morgans that look like him, and I absolutely LOVE them.

Here are some Links to some ads for ones I like. Would you mind taking a moment and explaining to me what their “breeding type” is? I had a friend that owned two western pleasure type Morgans that just looked to me like grad QHs. I wasnt fond of them at all. Nor am I fond of the ones that look like a mix of Saddlebred and Arabian. I like ‘em Big and Bold!!! hehhehehe!

I LOVE the Morgan breed and would love to learn what I actually like about the ones I am fond of (if that makes any sense! lol) Feel free to e-mail me at BrushFireFarms@msn.com if you would like.

    HAHAHAHA

I made up a couple imaginary horses just to see what I’d come up with. I created a “Blue Eyed Horse Assoc-Champagne” (didn’t realize they were combining those registries now or that they were even related in the least… LMAO!) stallion who is also a Pinto, with mediocre conformation, movement, and soundness (which they call “acceptable”), no show experience, two years old and green broke, unregistered, but has a great personality and excellent health! Oh yeah, and he’s 16.8hh and 2100lbs. Guess how much he’s worth?

$19,455. Hell yes. I need to become a BYB, it really is where all the money is! Hm, and even though I said that he has no pedigree, it’s still listed as “strong”. Probably because he’s a blue eyed champagne!

I changed some things around a bit, enough to make the horse sound completely worthless, and he’s still worth $1,320.

I also sent them a subtly sarcastic comment, they’ll either recognize it as a joke or prove themselves so ignorant that they can’t even tell when they’re being made fun of.

  44. Hypno-Toad says:

I am almost ashamed to admit this, but he was a breeding stallion at one point in his life.

Now I haven’t done any tracking-down with the registry so I don’t know if he is responsible for any babies, but I am hoping that someone looked at him overall and said, “we can do better” and that is why he is a “gildin’”. Not that he is terrible by any standards as he has movement/personality/work ethic/ et cetera, but he could be better and isn’t that what breeding is all about?

I will also admit to some of his frozen semen still being in existence and I will also admit to planning on using it. That said, it will be only once, for my own use, the off-spring will be cut or spayed, and the broodmare will have an awesome shoulder and a really nice hind end. The perfect mare for this hasn’t come about yet as I am not impressed by simply anything with a vagina, but I am willing to wait.

Hopefully his bay will have blue eyes and spots?

… One can only hope. For the baby’s sake.

My 3 y/o gelding is worth $17,400 because he’s a sound, well-mannered “sport horse” (Belgian Draft x tb) and is a dressage and hunters prospect (I’ll be showing him regionally at rated shows). What a great investment – I only paid $950 for him as a weanling. Maybe I should call the PMU rescue and let them know that they can get more than $1600 for their saddle-broke 4 year olds?

But then, my loud tovero yearling filly with a who’s who of APHA pedigree behind her, and who is built not only to halter but looks like she’s gonna be a pretty damn good western horse is only worth $4500. WTF? Still, considering I got her for free because she was born 1/2 blind, that’s still pretty good I guess. ;P

ROFLMAO- My 28 year old gelding who does nothing but stand in the field and eat, and occasionally gives pony rides to the nephews and neighbors is worth sixteen THOUSAND dollars! Because he has good conformation, rides both English and Western, and was, at one time, a ‘regional performer’ in one of the many English disciplines listed. This, depsite the fact that if he were actually for sale, he’d probably only bring around $1,000. He’s sound, healthy, and fit (for a 28 year old, mind) and REGISTERED!!! Good to know run-of-the-mill bay Quarter Horse retirees are worth so much! I should have sold my mare before we put her down- she was a liver chestnut, I’m sure she was worth a mint.

Wow this is ridiculous! My Selle Francais gelding who has won at the A shows in the upper level jumpers AND hunters is only worth $18k?! Somebody would be getting a REALLY REALLY good deal if they got him for that….

Sweeeet–my middle-aged, unrideable, uber-fugly Arab/QH/Morgan/Cow/Mutt that was rescued from the kill pen for $200 will supposedly fetch $1,000, and my 10-year-old, short, fat, stubborn trail-horse Arab with a mediocre pedigree can supposedly get me $5,000! NOW I know how I can send my kids to college!

I have to say..some of these backyard breeders/solictors of back yard breeders must have thought they hit the lotto with their hores, judging by how many times the price reflects the sites estimated value

Ya,. what a load of crap. My 21 year old all around, plain (but oh so lovable) Appallosa mare is worth more than twice as much as my regional champion 2 year old 1/2 arab halter mare who is a regional prospect in hunter and dressage and bred to the 9′s but not broke yet. Wierd?!?!?!

Hahaha! Rated my horse at $17,000 – I love my horse as much as the next person loves theirs, but I’d say about 7000 would be a fair amount for him. He does have CHAMPION BLOODLINES- Impressive!!! (My horse and his sire [thank god] are N/N)
