Hmmm…maybe we DO really need to have a FHOTD get-together

I get a lot of e-mails that go “look me up if you’re ever in X and let’s have a beer!” This started to make me think that it would actually be a LOT of fun to have a FHOTD get together…maybe early next year?

I’m thinking Vegas…something where we’d have some guest speakers during the day on topics of interest to responsible breeders like conformation, genetics, avoiding genetic defects, weanling and broodmare nutrition…and of course at night we’d just party like rock stars. :-)

Thoughts? I am thinking maybe January when it’s not the show season and most mares aren’t too close to foaling yet, so you can get away without too much worry.

Cost would be enough to cover expenses, whatever that worked out to be, and we can take a vote on which rescue to shoot any overage to.

We would love to be there! Near any of the lobster buffets? BONUS!

How about monthly local chapter meetings? These would be easier on everyone and if they couldn’t make it to the annual grand poohba convention, they could still hit one or two of those?

Fugly- my friend is interested in setting up a similar discusson on dogs. She may be contacting you- I cc’d the reply to her also. The book is taking shape much quicker than we thought… We may run short on pages!

I’d love to be there, as long as it’s during winter break [omgosh so many stalls to clean at college that I don't have time during school!] and preferably a weekend. Tickets will be cheap in Jan, which is AWESOME -poor college student-. If the college leases my GELDING for spring semester I will TOTALLY be there!

The idea of having guest speakers is wonderful, and maybe we can donate anything we make to a good rescue op or something.

You’ve been around such a short time, and look at this wonderful following! Kudo’s to you, Fugly!

There is a western states veterinary conference in Vegas every year, if the times matched it would be easier to get real quality speakers.
Dr Deb Bennett (I think spelled correctly) comes to mind as a top notch confo person.
Also a discussion summarizing the most recent research regarding the strength and heritability of traits commonly selected for by breeders would be of value.

Would there be a special event logo available on Fugly Horse Swag?

You could probably get it sponsored by some of the big name companies, to help cover costs. I would imagine any of the larger feed manufacturers would be glad to sponsor, provide speakers, and maybe give away samples, coupons, etc.

If you could line it up with the vet convention it would be a big help, but rooms may be scarce, or more expensive because of everything going on. (We have run into this when traveling with horses.)

All you have to do is upload the logo to their site and we can go on there and buy whatever we want…from t-shirts to baby bibs and blankets. The site is http://www.mygarb.com. FHoTD would make any profits….maybe to a good rescue?? Then when we all meet up in Vegas we can be dressed for the occasion! :)

Sorry, everyone, this is totally not on topic, but I have a question for lifelike001.

What don’t you like about living in Australia? I’m curious because I love Australia (as a tourist) and have kinda sorta thought about applying to become a permanent resident.

Back on topic, I would definitely be interested in attending a meeting in Las Vegas if we could put together a good program. I would love to attend sessions on evaluating breeding stock, running a *real* rescue operation, and different breed standards. Could we include mules?

Also, at a professional conference I attend each year, there is always a session on developing educational materials and conducting educational outreach activities. That would be a great subject: How to take the “don’t breed fugly horses” message to 4-H clubs and such.

I can see it now. Every vet office in the country has, right next to the “Spay and Neuter Your Pet” poster, a “Geld Your Colt” poster, created courtesy of the supporters of the Fugly Horse of the Day blog.

And as far as people needing donations to attend (myself included)… well, lets just all run right out to our local auctions, collect a bunch of fuglies, breed the shit out of them and sell the foals for the money we need! LMAO (That entire statement is dripping with sarcasm of course!)

Jenny, Looks good to me too. I would ask the seller to send more pics. He’s a little far off in the distance so it’s hard to see clearly. He looks like he might have taken a long spot to the fence. I would rather a horse take the long spot if they are not set up just right. It shows that they have heart. I would also like to see some dressage scores if you would be using him as an eventer. Especially in the lower levels, dressage can make or break you.

Are you looking at a different photo? The horse is in the air over the jump, not way in front of it.

It’s possibly a trick of perspective, XC jumps are often set so that the different options/level/heights are right next to each other. The arab is jumping a smaller obstacle on the far side of the big one, which is the one that first attracts your eye.

I have not been to a horse sale here in AZ for MANY years (since the one in Tucson shut down). I actually enjoy (for lack of a more appropriate word) going to horse sales just to see what is going through. Its actually the best way I know to keep a truthful idea of what the market is like.

Not to mention, some of the best kids’ horses I have ever had have come from the sales. Forgive me, but I am a lover of big ole jug headed, fugly, plod around at a walk horses! They are great for beginners!

Gotta say I agree– as an avid Appaloosa owner, I KNOW the current logo’s point is NOT to pick on Apps, and I don’t find it personally offensive…. but I can’t wear it…. it could too easily be interpreted as a slam on Apps by observers who aren’t familiar with the FHOTD blog, and that would be counterproductive to my commitment to promote Apps and educate people on what an awesome choice in horses they can be!

With regard to the heritability of traits- the equine genome has been mapped and many specific genes have been deciphered. This being the case there are research groups organizing the genome- placing known genes on the correct chromosome.
As a hypothetical (and very basic)example: Say you breed your mare to a roan stud and the baby is roan. If the stud’s dam was roan you know that he passed the chromosome associated with the roan gene which he inherited from his dam to the foal. Now pretend that same chromosome is also home to muscling expression and the dam was a champion halter horse- you now know that she not only passed on her color but also her superior muscling.
However this does not take into account dominant/recessive, phenotypic expression which is based on multiple genes (such as muscling)or many other factors. The study of the genome is, simply put, a novel way of figuring out (at this point in time) who got what from where. Thus even if something isn’t expressed in the phenotype, due to environment or recessiveness, you still know ‘it’ is there and can then have a better understanding of the breeding capabilities of individual horses.

    Very exciting!!!!

As a semi-native Nevadan, I’d definitely come. However, the Las Vegas venue could be expensive if held in the cooler months and too hot if held in the summer.

Reno is a nice cooler less expensive alternative.

If you wish, I can check out the costs at a hotel/casino and the livestock events center.

We don’t have too many breeders here to tour though.

    Let me know.

The word in your post that struck me was “loyalty.” You hit the nail on the head because it states exactly how I feel. The old gelding in question doesn’t owe me anything, on the contrary we owe him. He raised two of my daughters and gave me my first taste of serious competition in the show ring. Even my un-horsey hubby agrees that the oldies deserve a retirement and dignified death at our own hands. Thanks for validating us.
