Stupid people making horse babies

An alert reader sent me this picture. This mare is a six year old completely blind draft cross mare whose hind fetlocks touch the ground when she walks (DSLD, anyone?). She is currently in foal for the third time. She lives as you see her, staked out in a field. Her owner thinks conformation means “how pretty they are.”

*sound of my head violently slamming against my desk*

Please pass me a 2 x 4 and a plane ticket, someone needs a beating and I certainly don’t mean the horse!

OMG. Well, she’s totally defenseless against any predators, being blind AND staked out in what looks like wild open country. What a sad scenario. And to be in foal with the hind suspensories like that. How cruel.

…this means she has been bred since she was 3. It’s hard to tell what part of the country she is in but I hope she has shelter. How does it work when her foal is on the ground – doesn’t it get tangeled up and her not being able to see what’s wrong? I bet she’s stepped on her babies by accident too……AGH ! Horrible life for this girl.

When the foal is born, is it staked out too? Or is it just running loose? I am trying to keep my brain from falling apart on this one.

When I saw her, in what appears to be a large open field, I had the predator thought also …She is BLIND and STAKED out for GOD SAKES! What the hell they going to do when she foals? HFB! If that foal wanders away from her, She is going to be a neurotic mess, looks like there is a possibility of a cougar getting an easy meal

  19. gemtwyst says:

    That is totally fucking unreal.

The mare is blind, not retarded–there is no need to stake her to the ground. Several different people I’ve spoken with have had blind horses before and the horses are fine out in the pasture if they have a pasture buddy. Hell, even if they don’t have a pasture mate, blind horses usually get acclimated to their surroundings fairly quickly. I can’t believe it–this is the equivalent of chaining your dog to the tree for its entire life.

I hope the person who owns this mare is arrested. Please keep us updated, FHOTD.

P.S. Some people had the fine suggestion of beating the owner with a 2×4 with a nail in it… hell, I’m tempted to just find a nail gun and shoot the bastard’s eyes out.

Is it possible she’s just staked out to graze and is put up at night or something? Could it be? Please tell me it’s so. Perhaps fantasies of torture and murder will leave my head. And even if by some small chance that is the case, it still doesn’t excuse the breeding. Nope, sorry the asswipes still have to die or at least suffer horribly.

get a rope…and not for the horse…well, maybe to lead her to safety…for the owner, find the nearest tree!

My sister’s first horse went blind from chronic uveitis. When we moved to Florida, he was in a pasture with our broodmare (his seeing-eye horse). she would wander up the hill and leave him behind (some buddy, huh?) I got the idea to tie a sleigh bell in her tail. He was happy after that, since he could always tell where she was at. He also figured out that when he went from grass to sand, that the fence was within a few feet. We also put up a wind chime at the water trough so he could find it easily. He did very well in this environment. We eventually were able to put him in a small outdoor arena to graze each evening by himself. He passed away at the age of 30 about two years ago. He was one Paso that could do it all! He was shown in various classes, and I even rode him once in pole bending and barrel racing at one of our Paso shows when he was 23yrs old!

If you take a close look at the picture, you can see that it’s not just one rope she’s tied with. Looks like a lead shank with a chain attached to her halter and then possibly? a nylon longe line? I’m sure most of you know what it is like when those flat nylon longe line’s go slipping thru your hands!

If I didn’t have so many of my own and my hubby wouldn’t kick me out for bringing another one home- I would say she can some live with us, as long as she wants/needs. I would gladly join in with the beating, Fugly Horse. I will bring my own pliers to rip his fingernails and toenails out with.

Horrified! Poor thing! These people are predators! Why, oh why, do so many evil, evil people prey on such sweet innocent creatures! If not horses, why not dogs, if not dogs, how about a child, if not a child, I know what about a defenseless elderly person! Take your pick you freaking asswipe!

OK – I don’t feel better! I don’t know how any of us can feel better until we figure out a way to rid the planet of people as evil as the person responsible for this heinous behavior! FHOD – I wish you all of the luck in helping this precious mare – needless to say – if you need any help – you can count on me!

I have been involved with the rescue of numerous dogs…trying with all of my might to educate people about the over population of man best friend. From protesting pet shops that buy from puppy mills, to backyard breeders who don’t know their ass from their elbow, to the owners who think that a dog needs to experience the ‘joy’ of birth to be truly fulfilled…oh and you gotta love the parents who thinks they need to bring yet more puppies into the world so that their kids can experience the ‘miracle’ of birth! I would just love those same parents to take their kids to the local shelter on the ‘kill’ days so that they can also experience all of those beautiful loyal animals euthanized!

I digress…I am fairly new owner of three lovely horse companions…silly me I made sure I had the financial ability to provide my horses with proper shelter, vet care, etc…I had to wait 25 years! But, my horses will not go without! I wish I could say that it surprises me that this kind of insanity goes on in the horse world…sadly I am not…I was hopeful…given that horses are so large…I naively thought that maybe the intellect of the owners would match the size of the animal…*sign*

Keep up the fight! As one of the folks in Bassett Hound rescue says ‘Saving one Bassett may not change the world, but it means the world to that Bassett’ (I love that saying…although I am not a Bassett owner)

    God Bless!

Kids need to learn about the miracle of sterilization and that pregnancy is avoidable. Not such a bad lesson for them to learn in general!

I have a ‘wonderful’ neighbor that often ties a stud out in his yard to a tree on a very long rope, tied around his neck, with just a bucket of water. Well, he normally starts the day with a bucket of water, if he happens to knock it over in the middle of the day, too bad. Tree = shelter, grass = food, bucket = water (in theory), the local authorities know about it and haven’t/won’t do a damn thing. Nor will they do a thing when he breaks his rope and comes knocking at my pasture door, which has happened more times than I care to remember :-(

I don’t know of a state where it’s legal to leave a horse with no shelter. This old girl doesn’t even have a tree.

I’m not going to complain abou the blindness, because what caused it wasn’t mentioned.

One of my fillies is out of an Icelandic stallion who’s completely blind from drinking contaminated water. He ran in a herd of 40+ other horses; broodmares, young geldings, and foals. He had about five broodmares who took turns leading him around.

Oh, I forgot to mention, her last foal (sired by a Clydes cross) was loaded into the back of a pickup at 6 WEEKS OLD and taken away to another barn to be sold.

I’m in with the 2×4, although a lead filled baseball bat might be more satisfying. Hey — can we blind and stake the owner out without shelter or water and make them pregnant???

THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!

This poor mare just saddens and sickens me to no end. I want to cry. You can just see in her sightless eyes that she is hoping for death and not understanding what she has done wrong. God! This is horrible. I really hope the authorities do something about it (though thats highly unlikely), or that someone can offer her current owners a price they are willing to accept for her, then take her and love her and give her tons of carrots for a couple of days, and then hold her head in their lap and cry and tell her she is loved as she crosses over the Rainbow Bridge. Its just heart wrenching.

Im in Southern, AZ and there are some horses down the road from me (well, actually a horse and a mule) that are both dark bays. They have NO shelter whatsoever (I take that back, there is ONE Saguaro cactus). I drive by them day after day and wish someone would do something for them, standing there in the sweltering 120 degree weather. It angers me. I have called the HS, and they will NOT do ANYTHING. Horses are classified as livestock, and do not fall under the same rules as companion animals such as dogs, cats, ferrets, etc. :( If I had the money, I would offer to buy and build a shade for those horses.

I have to say that everytime I see this picture, my heart aches. It is, by FAR, the worst example of neglect FHD has ever posted. That poor mare just looks like she is reaching out to you begging for help.

The really horrifying thing is that you know she HEARD the photographer come up to snap the pic. She reached out her head begging for affection (or water maybe?) and I would be willing to bet that once that camera made that click sound, the photographer walked away without a second thought.

THAT is what breaks my heart and makes me wish that this mare would either just give up and drop dead, be shot in the head by some upstanding citizen, or be seized from her owners. (ANY of these scenarios would be better than what is happening to her at this very moment.)

She is in an area where large animal rescue resources are hard to come by but I have made it clear that I am pretty sure I can pull substantial donations for her care if they are able to seize her, and hopefully that will be an incentive.

    About the blind mare!!!!!!!!

It is so sad how people judge you by a picture!!!!!!!! For one thing this poor blind mare was at a boarding stable before she came out here and this is how she was returned to us and they are the ones who you should be saying horriable things about not the owner..The owner wasn’t even home when her mare was not being fed..She trusted the one who she was boarding off..So don’t you guys think that you should have the facts right before you tear this person to pieces??????? The mare is not in foal….This mare is not tied on, and she runs free with another horse and all she does all day is eat and drink…At the time of this picture she was just coming home from the boarding stables and she was only tied on for a short time until we could get her too our stables..There are no predetors out her to hurt any horse alone a blind one..She is taken care of very very well by me and her owner…so please, the next time someone posts a pic of someones horse on here I hope they get their facts right before they beat them down…

    about the blind mare

Well I guess for all of you who made those drastic comments on the blind mare should be happy. The mare is now put down. You people are so quick to judge a picture. This horse was happy and well kept by the owner for years. She was a normal horse, very kind, very loving and affectionate, she had only one problem; her being blind. As to my knowledge of this horse, she was born blind and had become accustomed to it. The horse was simply tied on for a short period of time, she was not suffering from dehydration or deprived of anything for that matter. You should get the facts straight before you tear into somebody like that. Now, the horse is put down. I am torn by this whole matter. :(

I hope all of you guys are happy, the blind mare is put down? I am heart broken over all of this. Even though I didn’t own the mare, it killed me for the owner to put her down..Can someone who made a comment in here answer me one thing ?If a person is blind he or she is better off dead? I don’t get it with all of you? You drove the owner to putting down a healthy horse and I hope you can all live with yourselfs..For myself my heart breaks for her everyday because she could still be down running on the fields and around other horses and she was happy and now she is GONE………

That was not at all what was being said. If she needed to be put down I’m glad it was done, rather than the alternatives out there.
If you don’t want your horse keeping skills called into question, when she was really only tied being brought in from the field, then don’t take pictures of your tucked up dehydrated looking blind mare staked in a field with no water or shelter and post in on the internet. Simple as that.
